Disk Imaging, DMG, Zip, COmpressing

Hi,
I just downloaded a cool free software called FreeDMG which creates disk images. The problem is I'm not quite sure what it's used for! I know it creates .dmg files out of folders, i.e. creates a disk image, but what could I use this for? I know most program developers must use it to create the .dmg versions of their programs, but for a regular user....
Is it a compression tool? Can I use it to reduce the size of some of my file folders for back up purposes? If not, what for?
By the way are there other OS X solutions for compressing large file folders and reduce space occupied by a back up solution?

I'm a pretty comfortable osx user and I'm targetting you with this question as you seem to have a lot of posts and that nifty developer icon. I'm well aware of how 10.4 pulled out from having stuffit in their systems and allowed for creation of native zip archives via Create Archive in the finder itself. I'm glad to have found out in my reading that zip natively now supports all resource forks as a designer using old school fonts.
Here are some of my concerns for my workflow in prepping for archving work and looking towards a compatible future:
-Is there a way to tweak default zip compressions settings to getting smaller archives?
-What about RAR, I'm in the midst of trying to figure out if RAR has any support for resources forks often found in font files. An additional benefit that I see in RAR is the parity factor on windows boxes. (I'm aware of MacParDeluxe and Split and Concat as well) But essentially it would be great to cut down usage of programs to archive to say.. ONE. I'm not a windows user but I've seen some windows users workflows for archiving their work and they can create archivable, "paritied" segments of their projects, and set multiple to go and let their computers do compressing while they sleep.
-which brings me to my next point: I'm a little peeved with my experience at DMG, ZIP, and STUFFIT. Here's why, keeping in mind, I'd love not to have to drop to command line to accomplish these tasks: Compress/decompress multiple folders of projects as separate archives simultaneously, maintain resource forks for legacy files-just in case.
DMG: *.dmg's are great, yet I believe I've found a issue with them... try mounting 3-4dmg's on your desktop from a portable drive each dmg having a couple hundred files in them (images often in my case). Then grab all those mounted dmgs to a local drive. The copy begins with counting... and disappears at times, no warning... and incomplete... I've logged this on macintouch with no response and have tried this with similar results on numerous pristine systems.
Also, in my experience in using a very nice program like DropDMG it does a GREAT job of creating dmgs for a folder at a time... but when attempting to set even two to go, one will error out.
ZIP: Once again, happy to see that I can now preserve resource forks natively in OSX through "Creative Archive..." Bummed when I try on occasion to expand a folder of 24 zip archives at once (Apple+A, Apple+O in a folder) and occasionally they start erroring out... (seems to happen with fonts a lot in my experience). And again/addtionally, any way to tap into compression settings.
STUFFIT: Aladdin...sigh They rose, they fell... OSX x'ed them, they seem to be better... but not quite. IMPRESSIVE compression with the stuffitX archives, but boy, they really start up the turbines on my machine and not to forget lets multitask the mac... I'd love to rightclick one folder after another and set 10 project folders to go overnight stuffing away.. but the instant proceed on the second archive while the first is going... i notice the first one either freezes or the progress bar stops givig me any accurate visual feedback.
So Wade, perhaps I've been going about my archiving all wrong, but I do know some of my concerns are well grounded and as I'd love to set my system to crunch away while I sleep without a concern in the world at night, I really don't think I need to be baby sitting a program while archiving or unarching and I'd love to feel secure in whatever format I choose for archiving/future forecasting. Please do share any thoughts suggestions you have on all this.

Is there anyway to obtain a disk image (dmg) for an app from the App Store?
I need to obtain an dmg for a small App that is only available from the App store, but I need to put it on a Snow Leopard machine that does not have App Strore installed (and cannot be upgraded further).

Any Mac with Snow Leopard can be updated to 10.6.8, which includes the MAS. Just download the 10.6.8 update combo and install it on that Mac.

You also do not need a dmg, just copy the app from one Mac to another. Unless the app has an installer MAS apps are simple drag & drop installation apps. If it has an installer drag & drop the installer and then run it on the Mac where you want the app.
Most MAS apps require a minimum of Mac OS X 10.6, and many require 10.6.6, 10.6.7, or 10.6.8 to run.

Disk Image (.dmg) files no longer mount

Since updating to 10.4.9, I cannot mount disk image files. When I double click on them, I get an error dialog from Finder which reads, 'The Following disk images failed to mount.' Reason: 'Device not configured.' I suspect that some essential software, 'Disk Copy' and/or 'Diskimagemounter' did not, for one reason or another install with the rest of the update. My computer did crash when the update was almost complete, but after a restart, everything seemed to work OK, except for not being able to mount disk images, which in this age of downloadable software basically makes your Mac dead in the water. Any solutions, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

Your Mac crashed before the update installation process was complete and before the prompt to restart?
If so - Houston, we have a problem. ;~)
Did you check your boot volume for any directory problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger install disc immediately before the install and did you quit all running applications before the install?

Test if this resolves the mount disk images problem since you should download the 10.4.9 Combo Update and re-install 10.4.9 since your Mac crashed before the install was 100% complete.

Can an opened disk image (.dmg) be passworded?

I have created a DMG file with encryption and password. That secures it before I open it.

I'm not sure I understand the question, so let's see if this hits the mark... When you open an encrypted .dmg file, you must supply the password. From then on, as long as it appears as a "disk" on the desktop, you can access that disk and all the files on it without a password. When you're done, you drag the "disk" (not the .dmg file!) to the Trash to "eject" it. At this point, it's locked up again, and you'll have to enter the password to open it again.
Does that answer the question? If not, you'll have to be more specific.

That is a disk image file and you can't open that in an application.

Errors when trying to open up a disk image that has been comp. & encrypted.

I have an old 15” PowerBook G4 that I purchased back in 2004 that I wanted to backup the data on in preparation to sell it. The PowerBook has Leopard (Mac OS 10.5) installed on it. I used my Leopard installation DVD to boot the computer up and then launched disk utility (v. 11.0 (252)). I wanted to make a disk image (.dmg) of my entire “Macintosh HD” partition, so after unmounting the partition (otherwise you get a “resource busy” error message), I selected File -> New -> “Disk Image From...(<hard drive partition>)”. The next screen presented me with a name to type in for the saved disk image file and options to compress and encrypt (128 or 256 bit AES) the image. I could not get the image to begin creation when I had both compression and encryption set. I kept getting the error message “Unable to create (error -60007)”. So, I opted to create the disk image with just compression selected. This worked fine and I was able to select the image (let’s call it disk_image1) and perform an Image -> “Scan Image for Restore...” successfully as well as mount the image and open up files (the verification process took a long time before the image mounted, but it was successful).
Next, I moved the Firewire 800 external HD containing “disk_image1” to my new MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard installed) and opened up disk utility (v. 11.5.1 (298.1)). I was able to successfully mount the image and browse and open up files with this updated version of disk utility. I then attempted to convert the disk image I just created to a new disk image (let’s call it disk_image2) via Images -> “Convert...”. I selected “disk_image1” and then named the new image (disk_image2). I then selected compression and 128bit AES encryption, entered in a passphrase and started the process. Everything worked great in creating “disk_image2”, but when I tried to open up the image either in Finder or within disk utility, I got error messages. In disk utility, I got the message “Unable to attach “disk_image2.” (Authentication error).” and within Finder, I got “The following disk image couldn’t be opened” disk_image 2 (Authentication error). Note, I was never asked to provide the password I used to encrypt the image nor did I ever select to save it in my keychain. Just as a precautionary measure, I check my keychain and did not see the password for the encrypted image saved in there.
Is there a bug within disk utility with the way a compressed & encrypted image is created or a problem with the authentication process for an encrypted image?

I have not had this happen to me, but have read similar stories from people on these boards for years. I think saving an entire OS X boot disk to a disk image is asking for trouble. If anything goes wrong, one byte of data is copied incorrectly. it can render the entire image unmountable and all of the data in it inaccessible.
I'd use Disk Utility's Restore button (or a program like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner) to make a complete copy of the hard drive onto its own hard drive, skipping the disk image. If any bit of data gets dropped then only one file is affected, instead of the whole works. Do you have any other stuff on that external drive? If not, just erase it and try again, copying everything directly to the drive instead of to a disk image.

Why archive AVCHD as disk images, versus .MOV or .MP4?

I get an interesting array of responses to this everywhere I ask...but most of all I'm curious about the opinions of folks who specifically use FCPX for editing, so I'd greatly value your feedback.
Like many folks who have been shooting AVCHD for a while, I now have many years worth of footage from a variety of cameras stuffed into my backup/archive workflow. For all those years, I've been keeping perfect disk images (generally non-compressed, read-only .dmg files created in Disk Utility right off cards and cameras) of every single one of those AVCHD shoots. In the early days of the format, when support was far, far more twitchy and frustrating than it is today, I felt it made sense to have a little "healthy" paranoia.
These days, however, I wonder if this isn't a colossal waste of time and storage space?
Here's the thing about this method...nothing ever gets deleted. You end up sucking every little take, every borked shot, every mishap, into your diskspace, cloud storage, tape library, or whatever you use for archival, forever. When I stop to think objectively about this, it seems nuts. I mean, if I did this with photography, my photo library would be 2x to 3x its current size and full of garbage. It would also be hard to navigate, which come to think of it is a major annoyance with all my AVCHD disk images. I keep them well organized, but still, having to mount them to look through videos (and then having to climb down into the "STREAM" subfolder each and every time) feels like a hassle.
I wonder if I should just go back, bust open those old disk images, use something like ClipWrap or Media Converter to repackage all those .MTS clips in something more portable (like Quicktime or MP4 containers) and just keep around the ones I actually want? There's no quality loss in doing so, and the video/audio content would continue to be usable in both FCPX and pretty much any modern multimedia software, right?
My question is what, if any, good argument is there in 2012 for keeping complete disk images of AVCHD?

Sorry about all the frustration.
Why does GB output an iMovie generated video podcast as .mov and Final Cut export to iPod as .m4v?
I don't have the newest GarageBand, so can't really say. But I do know that Final Cut will export a movie in different formats. If you choose the default setting for the iPod, you will get a high quality file, but it will be HUGE! Takes a long time to download, and takes a lot of server space.
This isn't too much of a concern if you have just a few movies and they are short, but if you make many long movies, it's a big problem. We produce a movie every week that's about 40-45 minutes long, so we use the QuickTime .mov as well as the MP4 export from Final Cut Express and encode them as H.264 using settings we've refined to make the file size small. Last week's 38:33 minute talk was 61.1 MB for our large 480x360 .mov video, and 35.5 MB for our 320x240 .mp4 videocast.
The extension on a H.264 file could be .mov (our large video) or .mp4 (our videocast). .m4v can also be H.264 (the default iPod QT setting).
The encoding (like H.264) is the most important part - you want to make something that looks good, sounds good, and streams well.

Application copied from disk image not recognised as correct arch by Finder

occasionally, when I download a disk image ".dmg" that contains an application bundle ".app", I can run the application from the Finder by double-clicking on the icon of the application on the disk image, but when I copy the application to my harddisk, either with the Finder or with "cp -rP", and try to start the copy, the Finder gives me "You can't open the application xyz because it is not supported on this architecture".
However the size of the application bundle, as measured with "du(1)" did not change, and sure enough the copy works just fine when I directly launch the application binary from the shell... The latest example of this behaviour was with the supertuxkart-0.6.1a-full-osx.dmg that I just downloaded.
Anybody seen something similar and/or know what causes this strange behaviour?

I have had a similar problem simply making a copy of a .app file. I spoke with Apple support about it and they said this is the desired behaviour when the application is not a universal application.
You can check by opening the info window for the application and seeing if it says Universal next to Application in the Kind field.
If it says Universal, it should copy without problem, if not, then it won't. Apple support wasn't able to give me a clear reason as to why this is, though.

Macbook Disk Image

I have what I hope will be a simple question. I need to take my MacBook in to the Apple Store to be looked at, and in preparation for doing so, used DiskUtility to make an image of my MacBook's hard drive, which I'm storing on the hard drive of another computer. The total size of the newly created disk image is 62.66 GB while the Finder reports my hard drive is being used to about 74.26 GB. Could this discrepancy be due to formatting, or does it sound like the disk image isn't complete. Hope this makes since, and I'll be happy to clarify if need. Thanks so much!

Disk images are generally compressed, so that's probably why you're seeing the discrepancy.

Burning disk images on Disk Utility...

How do I burn multiple Disk Images onto a single DVD that I can then use on a PC? I have several 3 CD application images, and I want to convert them to DVD, but I can't figure it out, and I have no clue how this can be done! thanks!
(PS) I also have Toast Titanium 7, and even that doesn't seem to have an explanation on how to do this!

I purchased several software titles that were released on CDs (3 cd set!) once I have turned them into disk images (DMG and/or IMG), how do I burn the 3 images into a single session DVD for use on Windows XP? as far as I know, XP can only read single session DVDs and CDs, so I need this to be burned (3 IMG files) onto the single session DVD, but i have no clue how to do it. please help me! thanks!
(PS) can be completed using Disk Utility or toast 7 [since I have a full version of both]

Disk Image Utility

I am trying to create a disk image from a data CD. I am following the instructions provided under Help, but I get an error stating "Internal file system error."
Any ideas what's going on?
Here are the instructions I'm following:
To duplicate a CD or DVD:
Insert the CD or DVD disc in the optical drive, and select it in Disk Utility’s list of disks and volumes.
Choose File > New > “Disk Image from [name of disc].”
Type a name for the disk image.
Choose “compressed” or “read-only” from the Image Format pop-up menu.
Choose “compressed” to create a smaller disk image. Choose “read-only” to create a disk image that’s quicker to create and open.
Click Save.
After Disk Utility creates the disk image, eject the original CD or DVD.
Select the disk image in the list of disks and volumes, and choose Images > Burn.
When the Burn Disc dialog appears, insert a blank CD or DVD, and then click Burn.

Instead of “compressed” or “read-only”, try "CD/DVD Master".

Disk Images won't open after update to 10.4.10

After updating to 10.4.10 disk images (dmg-files) won't open any more. I get the error message "The following disk images failed to mount:.. Reason: Device not configured". This happens every time on every disk image. These same images mounted just fine before the update.
Any ideas?

what if the disk image is on an attached FireWire Drive?
there is no OS on that drive, so I can't repair permissions.
I have two disk images on it: one opens fine, the other I get "no mountable file systems"

Sorry about the length, but I thought someone might need it.
The eMac still mounts disk images with no problem.
I've never run VPC on this machine, so this isn't tied to the VPC disk mounting bug I've seen on the lists.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I solved the error by installing the OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update. This update was in a .dmg file, of course, but I mounted the disk image on my eMac and then copied the update to the iBook. Goes to show the advantage of having 2 machines in case one breaks.

Disk images from NFS on 10.4 "may be damaged" on 10.5

Disk images (.dmg files) created with hdiutil on OS 10.4 mount with warnings on OS 10.5. BUT - only if the source directory was on an NFS file system.
Specifically:
On OS 10.4.11, I can run:
cd /path/to/nfs/directory
echo "hello world" > hello.txt
hdiutil create -srcdir hello.txt hello.dmg
Then on the 10.5 machine, I double click on hello.dmg and it says:
"The disk image you are opening may be damaged and could damage your system.
Are you sure you want to open the disk image?"
If I say OK, it shows me the hello.txt file I expect, but the warning is troubling.
Running verify in Utilities -> Disk Utility results in this output:

p.s. Running the same hdiutil command on 10.5 results in a .dmg that doesn't give me a warning. The type of input file/directory (hello.txt vs a big directory full of files) doesn't matter, but the warning only comes up if the input file/directory was on an NFS filesystem.

I am having a similar problem.
I just updated clients to Leopard.
Xserve is still running Tiger.
Now clients cannot search files on the server.
Apple support said Tiger clients used "cat search" instead of spotlight.
Now that clients are Leopard, clients try to search with spotlight,
but Tiger Server cannot search with spotlight.
He suggested looking for a 3rd party cat search for Leopard clients.
Any suggestions?

Problem with sparse & sparse bundle disk images

Lion (OS 10.7) is driving me carzy.
Setting up sparse and sparse bundle disk images goes fine. But sometimes when attempting to open the image later, particularily after adding content (JPGs) I get the spinning beachball and then I must restart the computer. I have restarted this computer more than all my others put together, going back to OSA 7.
Other times everything seems to work fine
I have a G-5 running OS10.5, and there is no problem. The system is very stable re disk images.
I've tried all kinds of work-arounds with limited success. These include changing the names of the disk images or the files in them. Usually, I'm back to restarting the computer. If I copy an image that doesn't work on the Mac Pro to the G-5, it'll work. Sometimes the number for the size of the image in list view is grayed out and I don't know what that means.
It's interesting that when I first got the Pac Pro with Lion installed, sparse and sparse bundle images wouldn't work at all. After several updates to 10.7.2 or 3, the disk images work, but are not stable.
I would be very grateful if anyone out there has any info or hopefully an answer for this situation.

Sorry about the typos in my first message. I was tired after fighting the sparse image problem with Lion.
Today I have tried read/write disk images (dmg) and so far they seem to work fine. I would prefer sparse or sparse bundle disk images since they only take as much room as their contents, but I'll have to be practical about this.
The frustrating thing is that sometimes the sparse or sparse bundle images seem to work, but just when I relax, I'll open one and see all the blank square icons for each of the jpg files, and then I know I'll have to restart the computer.
I'm still hoping that someone else has had this problem and that maybe there's an answer. Maybe it'll take a future update by Apple to fix this.
