Disk Imaging problem

We're using a PXI-8185 for an autonomous experiment. We would like
to make a backup image of the disk with Norton Ghost so that if the disk
crashes, we can get a duplicate disk running quickly. I've done this
previously with the old Power Quest Disk Image program. (Which Symantec
bought and discard, eliminating their competition. Ya gotta love Symantec.)
Anyway, I've made a ghost image of a test computer using a spare
disk for the 8185, and that boots fine on the test computer. Hence
Ghost and the disk both seem to work. But when I make an image of the
8185, it won't boot. After the bios screen, it just hangs on a blank
screen. I'm guessing that NI uses some kind of disk imaging technology
to preload the 8185's, so is it possible
that that program is
incompatible with Ghost? (Ghost writes hidden ID codes to the disk, so
there could well be program-specific subtleties.)
So, the big question: has anyone made a backup image of an 8185 and
sucessfully restored and used it? Any suggestions on what might be
going wrong?
Thanks for any help. I know this is a bit distant from LabVIEW, but
this group certainly has a lot of experience with PXI hardware, etc.
Regards,
Dave

There are 10 kinds of people: those who understand binary,
and those who don't.

from what you put that they did to your machine they replaced the hdd and used the recovery media to reimage the drive back to factory. hdd and other hardware failures either happen very early or very late in their lives. so it is not uncommon to have a hdd that fails right out of the gate but it is much more common for them to fail later. as for getting your old hdd back i wouldnt count on it. it has probably already been sent away to be recycled.
you may not have had any problems at all with the hdd but from what you wrote that toshiba said it had multiple bad sectors. if these bad sectors are too big they will just replace it since those parts of the disc cant be used.

  • Disk Image problem... can you help?

Trying to make an image from a 700Mb CD-RW.
The disk contains various folders and files for a total of 265Mb. Does not semm corrupted in any way. I can view the images and viedos on it. This is not a commercial CD.
I go in Disk utility: File/New/New disk image from <name>
The image is created. No errors reported. However, only 1 folder was copied (about 160Mb).
    How can that be?

shapetweening can give really unpredictable result when you're not using really basic shapes.
You can do 3 things here:
    1 - Use shape hints
2 - Tween your shapes on different layers, so it is less complex on one layer
3 - Animate frame by frame, more work but maximum control

  • Disk Image problem with iDVD 08 and DVD player

I have just been reading The Missing Manual for iMovie & iDVD 08. It describes how to create a disk image on your hard disk using iDVD. I have followed the instructions and created a dmg file but I am unable to get DVD player to open it.
According to the book, after opening up the image, when I go to File, Open, in DVD player I should get an option to "open Video_TS folder", but all I get is "open DVD media", which means it is looking for an actual, physical DVD. Clicking on this sends me to the finder. When I find the image it is greyed out.
Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Mount or double click disk image and then
    launch Apple's DVD player app
Remember that this is a virtual disk which doesn't spin in the computer. It's simply on the desktop. So you'll need to launch Apple's DVD Player app manually. Just click the Dock icon (or dbl-click the app in the Applications folder) and you'll see your DVD play.
hope this helps but if not just come on back .....

  • Weird Disk Image Problem

Ok this is really getting on my nerves, I keep trying to burn a DVD all the setting are correct, is set as a single layer 4.2 Gb movie, but when I make a disk image the file is 4.57 GB in size so I can't burn it, further more, if I try to do a direct burn in iMovie it appears to burn the whole DVD but then tells me, the burn had Multiplexing errors, when I play the burnt disk, it plays only the motion menus looking at the disk reveals only a small proportion of the disk has been burnt too.... (btw.. i have over 20 Gb free Disk space)
My question is this - What the flaming cheese is going on ? And if it is simply that the addition of motion menus has made the data to large to burn shouldn't Apple have made iDVD capable of telling me this without going through horrific hours of wasted encoding time first, If this is a recognized bug, please could Apple do something about fixing it...

Yes, adding motion menus reduces the amount of your content the DVD can hold. Unfortunately, iDVD has no means of knowing exactly what the compressed size of all the content will be. That's why most of say 'Best Performance will hold up to a maximum of 60 minutes, while Best Quality will hold up to a maximum of 120 minutes".
It looks like you content was in the 'gray area' of 'might have fit but doesn't'.
It's hard to call it a 'bug'.. if your content approaches 50 minutes and you have motion menus, you should always go to 'Best Quality'.
BTW, no one from Apple monitors this forum, so trying to send Apple a message here is a waste of time.

  • Disk image problem

I'm attempting to create an image of my hard drive, so when i reformat i can restore my computer to the way it was before the format. The problem is, when ever i use the disk utility to create an image, it always comes back with an error message saying resources are busy. What does that mean and how can i go about creating my image???

You are probably trying to create the image on your startup volume by copying files. You cannot create an image of the OS that way. Furthermore, an image file is not bootable so even though you may create one you will have no way of restoring the image.
The proper way to accomplish what you want is to create a clone of your startup volume on a bootable external Firewire drive. You can clone the drive as follows:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.
Before reformatting the internal hard drive be sure to test your clone to be sure it will boot the computer. Open Startup Disk preference in System Preferences. Select the icon for the system on the external drive then click on the Restart button. Once you have started up from the external drive you can format the internal drive using Disk Utility.

  • Sparc station 20 boot problems/disk image problems

I downloaded the install image for solaris 8 off the sunsite and burned this using cdrecord.
I'm now experiencing strangeness when trying to boot with it.
    I get a :
    "short disk read
the file to boot may not be present?"
    Any idea what this mean?
    Cheers,
    fiq

Your message is unclear if you are getting short read errors after installation of CD 1 of 2 . You cannot make the / partition greater than 2 gig because the OBP does not know how to boot one that large. Suggest you try 1.9 gig to be safe. In some cases, a really old OBP, like 2.6.0 will limit you to less than 1 gig for /. Other filesystems can be larger than 2 gig, just not the one you're booting from.

  • Disk Image (.dmg) files no longer mount

Since updating to 10.4.9, I cannot mount disk image files. When I double click on them, I get an error dialog from Finder which reads, 'The Following disk images failed to mount.' Reason: 'Device not configured.' I suspect that some essential software, 'Disk Copy' and/or 'Diskimagemounter' did not, for one reason or another install with the rest of the update. My computer did crash when the update was almost complete, but after a restart, everything seemed to work OK, except for not being able to mount disk images, which in this age of downloadable software basically makes your Mac dead in the water. Any solutions, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

Your Mac crashed before the update installation process was complete and before the prompt to restart?
If so - Houston, we have a problem. ;~)
Did you check your boot volume for any directory problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger install disc immediately before the install and did you quit all running applications before the install?
Regardless and as a first step, check this link for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
Test if this resolves the mount disk images problem since you should download the 10.4.9 Combo Update and re-install 10.4.9 since your Mac crashed before the install was 100% complete.

  • Disk image failed to mount.

    Hi,
While updating the latest Intel update for a Macbook Core duo 1.83, the progress bar got stuck near the end and so I did 'force quit'. Ever since then I am unable to open .dmg files. I get this message " The following disk images failed to mount". " 'application name' broken pipe".
What can I do to fix this problem?

It's hard to say if your disk image problem is related to the force quit install. There are disk image problems with 10.4.9 that you can encounter even if the install was successful. I am running into them and so are some users reporting on MacFixit.com (scroll down to Disk Images Not Mounting).

  • Problems unmounting/ejecting a disk image after upgrade to 10.4.9

Since I upgraded to 10.4.9 I have the following problem:
After viewing a slideshow of pictures located in a disk image I cannot unmount/eject this image. I receive an error message that the image cannot be deactivated/ejected as some file is still in use.
Using the activity monitor I checked which files are in use by the Finder and found out that the last picture shown by slideshow is still referenced.
To me it seems as if the upgrade from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 either changed the behaviour of slideshow (which does not close all files when terminated) or the eject image function (which does not force all open files in the image being closed).
The only bypasses I found so far are
    - using "umount -f" on Unix level (think I have to be an admin for that)
    or
    - logging off and on again / restarting the computer
Has anybody got other ideas how to force the unmount without using native UNIX commands in a terminal window?
Can someone tell me how I can report this bug to apple? On Apple's support pages I could not find any information on that.
Thanks in advance for any helpful hints.

The "Dock" contextual menu item to "Relaunch" the "Finder" is the equivalent of a "Force Quit", which is quite different from a regular "Quit".
Unless it is being unresponsive to a normal "Quit" signal, force quitting any application is not recommended because unsaved changes will be lost. In the case of the "Finder", any sort of file transfers in progress will be interrupted. Data loss may also occur if a file containing "comments" has been moved at some point earlier in the login session.
A normal "Quit", such as what occurs when logging out, quitting through the menu, using AppleScript or the "Quit" option of "Activity Monitor.app" ensures that the app quits in an orderly manner.

  • Problems creating a disk image on an external hard drive

    Hiya,
I've been trying to create a disk image on my dad's external hard drive to hold my back-ups all day with no luck. I've managed small ones, e.g. a few MB, but when trying to create images 20 or 40 GB in size (which is what I need), it isn't working.
When I've tried creating them in Disk Utility with the place to save them to as the external HD, it says "Unable to create... Illegal seek" which doesn't explain much to me! I have been successful in creating a large disk image on my own HD, but when I try to move it to the external HD, it says "Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (Error code -1309)."
    Extra info:
    - I am saving my back-ups in a disk image, as they must be password protected, so that's why I'm not just copying them over.
    - There's plenty of space avaliable on the external HD, so it would seem that isn't the problem.
    - The HD is a Freecom Classic SL, connected via USB cable.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks alot,
    Charity

  • Disk Utility Problems - Can't make image or restore

I am having difficulty in making disk images & restoring using disk utility.
Issue 1 - Making an image of a DVD for the purpose of burning a copy (non commercial)
In DU I select the DVD in the sidebar, click new image DVD/CD master & save to desktop. The progress indicator reached about halfway & I get the following message: Unable to create "image name.cdr" - input/output error.
The source DVD in in the internal optical drive.
What causes this problem & can it be fixed? Why is the image .cdr not .dmg?
Can an image be made directly from a DVD?
As a workaround I used DU's restore function to copy the entire DVD contents to a free (27GB) partition on an internal HDD (not system disk) in the hope that I could make an image fron there. As soon as I clicked on restore both the DVD & target drive unmounted. After the progress bar reached 100% I got the following error message: Restore Failure. An error (5) occurred while copying. Input/output error
However if mounted in DU the partition has been renamed to the DVD name & the contents seem to be the same as the DVD.
    What is error 5?
I then created an image from this partition using DVD/CD-R master format which worked OK but created a 27GB image - too large to burn!
How can I make the image small enough to fit on a DVD-R?
Can an image be made directly from a DVD?
    Is this normal DU behaviour??
Once I get this right I plan to used DU to backup to an external HDD (I'm in the process of recovering from a drive failure and although I have most of my data back through partial backups & recovery like many before me I'm going to have better backups from now on!!)
    Any help would be apprecialted.
    Thanks in advance.
    John

It may be the the disc after all...
I'm still having the same problem, but I also discovered that I cannot get the install disc to get past the "spinning gear" stage when trying to start up with it, so yes, it's most definitely useless! My MacBook is still under warranty so I phoned Apple, and explained the problem and everything I did to ensure it wasn't hardware related. So they're sending me new install discs. I'm not 100% convinced yet that the problem is the install disc, but we'll see...my only doubt remains from the fact that I was able to make a disc image of it on my G4. That said...
I did a hardware test (long version, and everything is reportedly fine), played dvd movies, burned cd's, installed software from discs, etc, and it seems the drive is working fine, however, it could possibly be sensitive to even the slightest smudge or scratch (the install disc has a few very slight marks on it that shouldn't be a problem, and I cleaned it thoroughly). The only other time I had a problem was when I went to rip a song from a cd to iTunes where it hung and and then failed to complete the task. (The cd itself played without issue though.) I checked it for dirt/scratches: it had a couple of barely imperceptible smudges and one shallow scratch. I cleaned it, tried it again and iTunes was able to import from it after that. This remains the only time (so far) I've had a problem with a disc besides my install disc.
I want to be able to repair disk before I install 10.5.3, and back up everything, including the install discs. My Macbook came with 10.5.2 and except for this problem, everything's been working fine.
When I get my new install discs, I'll post how that went. They should arrive within a week or so.
DrHouseTF: I checked out your thread. I've never tried to make copies of game disks via DU, but maybe it's due to copy protection measures on the disc itself?

  • Another OS 10.4.11 update problem - disk images won't mount?

    Hi people,
Have never had to post on these boards as i've never suffered serious problems with my mac, until today.
Whilst installing/updating my powerbook to version 10.4.11 my mac seemed to crash so i rebooted my system. Probably not the best thing to do (i have little patience so was annoyed).
I'm guessing the update installed as my mac says it is now version 10.4.11 but when i go to mount any disk images it will not mount at all, but instead comes up with this message -
"The following disk image failed to mount
    Reason - error 0xe00002c9"
I've verified and repaired the permissions on the startup drive in disk utility, and also verified the volumed and it says everything is ok in those departments. Although the option to repair the disk is not available for selection.
I've downloaded applejack, but obviously can't mount the image file.
Please help as this is a big problem with regards to my work and play!
    Thanks for reading.

Hmm thank you for your time and effort on this problem BDAqua but unfortunately it still doesn't want to work! The 'DMG utility' program comes back with an error when trying to mount any of the disk images i have tried. I have been able to get up the script of what its doing in the 'console' application but that is ridiculously long, and i'd be lying if i said i have a single clue about what any of the script in it means!
So i'm guessing i'm gunna be archiving and re-installing. But this boads another question as i haven't a slightest clue about how to archive my files as i really don't want to lose any of it.
    sorry BDAqua

  • Disk Utility problems/making a good image file problems

    Hi,
I am trying to make a disk image with Disk Utility. But every time when I run the program, it gathers disk info for a long time and then shuts down in unexpected error. What can be the problem here?
The reason that I want to make a disk image of my cd is this, maybe someone knows a solution for this problem well.
I have the original game cd of Alone in the Dark 1. I played this always on my pc in the past and now, with the help of a program called Boxer that allows to run dos games on the mac, it can run on my mac, but, the music cannot be found. According to the makers of Boxer this is because the music on the cd is separated from the rest of the data as audio tracks. I'm not a programmer so I don't understand everything behind this, but they advised me to make image file of the cd, mount it and then run Boxer with this mounted file.
I cannot do this however, because Toast doesn't make a good image file that includes the audio tracks and Disk Utility is shutting down with an error all the time. Maybe someone knows another solution?
    Best wishes,
    André

Maybe, but this cd if from 1992, did they do that already those days? However, I can make with Toast an image from the game, but the soundtracks are not included then. I can listen to the tracks in Itunes, they are visible like a normal audio cd. My only wish... is to play the games. Visiting the past, so to speak. And I can not play it on Windows, because it is not supported anymore after dos left the stage and I tried so many bootdisks on my pc, nothing works. Boxer therefore was a good help. The music though brings live to the game...

  • Problems with the CS6 Master Collection disk image (invalid checksum)

I have problems downloading the trial for CS6 Master Collection for MacOS X.
I've tried downloading using the Download Assistant, both as a privileged and an unprivileged user, and have also tried the direct download as both privileged and unprivileged. Each time I've waited until the download was complete before trying to install, but every time the disk image fails to open, complaining of an "invalid checksum".
I've tried mounting the disk image without validating the checksum, but while I can then run the installer, the installation fails due to lack of privileges – again, this is regardsless of user privileges. I've also tried deleting the preferences and cache-files for Download Assistant, but to no avail.
Can anyone confirm that the english version of the CS6 Master Collecion disk image is working and can be mounted without error on MacOS X 10.7? I have now downloaded and re-downloaded the disk image at least eight times, and while I have a fast Internet-connection, this is getting tedious.

I just downloaded the DMG from Adobe.com using the trial and it mounts fine. I was able to start the installation.
I did not get a checksum error or any other error.
However, I found these instructions in another thread:http://forums.adobe.com/message/4370247#4370247
    <quote>
If the download is completed in the Adobe Download Assistant you can temporarily turn off the feature to verify the checksum.  The following steps will allow you to temporarily disable this feature:
Open the Disk Utility located in Applications/Utilities
Go under the Disk Utility menu and select preferences
Deselect the option to verify checksums
    Try mounting your DMG file
I would recommend turning this feature back on though after the installation is complete.  Also if you notice this happening on additional files it can indicate a problem with your Internet connection.
    </quote>
Could you try these steps and let us know if you were able to proceed.
