My Mac crashed today for the first time in the seven years I have owned it. I was working in Photoshop. It had been getting slower and slower in Photoshop. Now I can't start the computer at all. Using the Installer CD, I can't get through to use the Disk Utility to try to fix it. The computer gets bogged down in disk utility "gathering disk information." You may have had a hard drive failure. Have you been hearing any unusual sounds? Have you been getting messages about a full hard drive?
Will it boot in Safe Mode? See What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)

Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

  • Does Time Machine back up disk information in addition to all files?

    Hi
I want to know if Time Machine back up disk information of my current Apple computer.
These information may include GUID/Apple Partition Map (such as partition names and layout). I check my backups in the Time Capsule, and it seems that only files in the hard drive have been backed up. I kind of know Partition Map doesn't reside in files, but hidden in the hard drive, so I wander if Time Machine does back up them? If so, where are they?
      Thank you in advance!

If it's Windows as a guest in a virtual machine, the backing file will get archived.  That's certainly a backup, but a woefully inefficient one as it'll drag the whole backing file out each time.  Most folks will thus disable that file in Time Machine.
If it's Windows via Boot Camp or Linux in a GPT partition, that'll require using Windows- or Linux-focused tools.
One of the few available OS-agnostic approaches for backing up data is a disk image.   Time Machine is not an OS-agnostic backup tool.
As for Windows or Linux or OS X or most any other operating system, each has its own tools and requirements for performing an operating system backup and for recovering and restoring, and it's very rare for any other operating system around really has any clue what those requirements are for a given OS.

  • How can I get the disk information in Solaris 9

I am new to Solairs9. I use the format utility to list my partitions, but there are many unassigned partitions. I pasted the format response below:
    # format

The part number from 3 to 6 are unassigned. What does this mean? How much space of these unassigned partitions? How can I mount these unassigned partitions to my local directories?
    Thanks.

  • SUM Error Configuration Information Gathering

    Hello all
I'm a bit stuck. I started a SUM to update our Solution Manager from 71 SP4 to SP 11. Downloaded SUM and started it. It got through the Extraction phase OK but at the Configuration  - Information Gathering phase I have encountered a problem.
Error while executing Task with input file ReadProfiles.xml and task READ_DB_DRIVER_LOCATION. Task READ_DB_DRIVER_LOCATION not found in configuration file ReadProfiles.xml.
And indeed, there is no mention of READ_DB_DRIVER_LOCATION in the xml file. SUM release details:
    Software Update Manager Version: 1.0
    Support Package Version: 10
    Patch Level: 8
I have tried to reset update and presented with
    Unable to reset the upgrade
Unable to execute the SDT request list SUM
Revoke is not allowed for the current operation configure.
So it seems I need to fix the problme before I proceed any further. I was planning on downloading a later release or support package of the current release of SUM.
    Any insight would be appreciated.

    Hi
Have you check the here under note (if you are using Oracle) ?

Before you start the EHP Installation please check your Oracle JDBC driver.
The Software Update Manager takes the JDBC driver from the location specified in entry "rdbms.driverLocation" within file "/usr/sap/<SID>/<INSTANCE<nr>/j2ee/cluster/bootstrap/bootstrap.property". The driver specified in that entry is then copied to directory "SUM/java/lib" during the prepare process in the phase "READ_DB_DRIVER_LOCATION".
Later on, during the phases: "DETERMINE_JAVA_PORTS" or "GET_DMT_DB_INF", you may encounter the following errors in case of an outdated JDBC driver specified in the above mentioned bootstrap.property file:

  • Why shows the disk information 150GB Backup data, when the TimeMachine Backup is on another disk?

    Hi,
i'm using Time Machine to make my backups to my NAS (Synology DS211j). This is working.
But when i'm using the disk information (about my mac) there are 150GB Backup data stored on the disk of the mac.
What is this for a backup, when time machine backups the data to an external disk?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on Time Machine on a MacBook, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air with OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, your Mac creates automatically "local snapshots" on the startup disk > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html That's why you have 150 GB of backups on the internal drive

  • Which command can get physical disks information?

    Hi all,
I need to put datafiles, controlfiles and logfiles into different disks to get better performance.
I used "df -k" to get the disks' spaces, and I only got the filesystem information.
I CAN NOT get physical disks information. How can I do that?
    Thanks for your help.

I need to put datafiles, controlfiles and logfiles into different disks to get better performance.<br>If the disks are different but under the same disk controler, the result will be the same.<br>
If you want tune, you need to know what disks are under what disk controler.<br>

  • Unexpected Power Loss Attribute in Disk Information

    Hi,
I was just checking the disk information on my recently purchased 2013 Macbook Air (running Mountain Lion) to make sure that nothing was wrong when I spotted that the "Unexpected Power Loss" attribute keeps spiking. Is this anything to worry about? Normally I would associate this attribute with something like a power cut or improper shutdown on a desktop PC, i.e. something wrong. My worry is that the SSD could be faulty or impropertly seated in the PCI slot and I could end up losing my data at some point.
I purchased the SSD Health app from the App Store hoping to get more information but it seems like it somehow got corrupted before I could even open it and now I can't redownload it.
If anybody else has a similiar model could they confirm whether they get the same thing please?
    Thanks,
    James

    My laptop is ThinkPad X1.
Same situation. Originally was at 97% charge, once go to battery mode (AC unplug) battery immediately goes to 5% and then hibernate.
Replaced 3 batteries from service center but problem still persist.
Support Center keep insisting is battery problem despite 3 replacement batteries from service center! Lenovo is providing faulty batteries to customer for consecutively 3 times!?
Issue has dragged for over 1 year and now Support Center says battery warranty is over and request to purchase new battery. If purchasing new battery can solve the issue, why did I need to replace the battery 3 times!? All batteries cycle counts range between 30 to 40 only. (Mostly on AC and recharge threshold is set to recharge at 33%). Lenovo batteries can only last for 3-6 months!?
Despite case being escalated to "TOP MANAGEMENT", no response from Lenovo at all for over 1 week! Is this even escalating?
Is this so-called "Customer Satisfaction" when satisfaction level is NEGATIVE ONE HUNDRED?

  • Disk Utility gathers info infinitum - help?

I need to repair permissions on my hard drive in order to get my external LaCie 500 G back up and running (I think an improper shutdown screwed it up -- I can't get any of my macs to recognize it). The problem is, that when I try start my disk utility, the gathering information process never stops. Seems to be in a loop and I have to force quit to get out.
Everything else on my computer seems to be fine -- this is my dual 1ghz G4 that I use for editing.
I'd greatly appreciate any ideas or solutions. Thanks.

To repair your permissions without access to the Disk Utility, open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:
do shell script "diskutil repairPermissions /" with administrator privileges
You will be asked to provide your password. To do this on an external drive, use /Volumes/volumename/ as the path; if the disk's name contains spaces or other special characters, place \" at the beginning and end of the path.

  • Disk Information Shown in Disk Utility

    Hi MP Folks
My 2012 Mac Pro got 4 physical disks installed, 1 x SSD + 3 x HDD. All  bays are used. As you know, clicking the blue Info button at the top of the Disk Utility window may bring your the basic facts and extra information about the disks listed in the left pane.
I thought the information given there should be same kind of data in the same format, but on my Mac Pro only the first 15 items are the same, the remaining information varies from disk to disk, as shown below for the disks from Bay 1 to 4.
As you can see above, after S.M.A.R.T Status, the items are different. I got a few questions here.
    1. Why does the APPLE HDD HDS723020ALA640 in Bay 2 have no further information while all others have more reliability data collected?
    2. Why does the WDC WD10EAVS-00D7B0 in Bay 4 have a different Partition Map Scheme: "Apple Partition Map" instead of "GUID Partition Table"? I did use the same way that I did on other disks to partition and initialise this 1TB disk.
    3. In stead of assigning Disk Identifier in the order of drive bay, why does "Bay 2" have "disk3" and "Bay 4" have"disk1"?
    Thank heaps in advance.
    Regards,
    B

Data are recorded on the disk surface with a semi-redundant error-correcting code. Hardware and firmware in the drive are used to accomplish correction, if possible. Small bursts of errors are often correctable, but sometimes it takes many, many re-tries to obtain correctable data. Failure to obtain correctable data after many re-tries produces an I/O Error.
I/O Error tells you the data pattern in a particular block you are trying to read is very difficult to read [most likely], or possibly was written wrong or partially over-written with other data if the power failed while writing [extremely unlikely].  This is most often caused by subtle changes to the magnetic regions that make up the physical data, causing  a few bits to flip.
Getting an actual I/O Error is a desperate situation, much more extreme than the accumulation of minor data errors in the counter. There are data there, but they cannot be read. A drive with I/O Error has Bad Blocks, or may be failing completely. A drive with an accumulation of read errors means some blocks needed to be re-tried before correctable data were read.
The drive notes these problems, and maintains a "suspect list" of block numbers that are candidates for block substitution, and reports how many are on this list in its SMART status (accessible from Internally-mounted drives only). The drive is capable of substituting a spare block nearby, but cannot substitute another block unless and until new data are supplied, because doing so may poke a hole in the middle of a file.
Re-Writing the drive [traditionally with one pass of Zeroes] supplies that new data, and gives the drive an opportunity to check for proper data retention immediately after writing. Any blocks found not able to retain the new data have spares substituted, up to a maximum number of blocks in one pass (typically ten blocks).
Large scale studies performed by google in their servers indicate that drives that develop Bad Blocks in 24/7 use will typically need to be removed for too many Bad Blocks within 6 months.

  • Different information in 1. finder: film capacity 26 GB an 2. in "my mac" hard disk information: film capacity 76 GB?

i have Problems with my Mac. The Hard disk is nearly full, i send most of my film material from i Movie to an externe drive, but nothing changed.
But now are very different information about the film volume: in the finder only 26 DB, in the "my mac" HD information /& GB!!! What is the reason?

Have you updated a lot of events and projects from iMovie 9 to iMovie 10?  If so the discrepancy may be caused by the fact that both versions of iMovie are using hard links to the same original media files.   If this is the case the finder will show the stoarge used by your iMovie Events (Imovie 9) and imovielibrary (imovie 10) separately giving too high a total since most of the content is actually shared.
    Geoff.
