Disk IO monopolized by one app

Hi,
I have a desktop and a notebook, by hardware upgrade issues i'm using only my notebook,
On my desktop, i have four hard driver 7200RPM SATA II so i've only notices this problem when using VMWare and i  was thinking that was a VMWare problem, but, now that i'm using more the notebook i've noticed that this problem also affects my notebook, both are Arch Linux.
The notebook hard disk is slowest (it's one WD Blue that operates only at 5400RPM), so, this problem is more grave. When i open a process that consume much hard disk io, like a uncompress a file the Disk Input/Output is monopolized by that app and the system just "hangs" for some seconds, even minutes, until the operation is done.
On desktop i've only noticed that when the VM inside VMWare was using alot of bandwidth, but, on my notebook a simple system upgrade make my music stop until it's finish uncompressing the files, and the music only returns when that process stop to request so much IO. Just an example, both music, web navigation, anything. It's like the disk can't handle multiple access.
On my laptop i don't have VMWare or any heavy applications using the hard drive, only a simple system upgrade is enought to "freeze" the system for some seconds.
The system processor and RAM are ok, i've tested the disk IO usage with iotop, also, it's kinda perceptible that isn't a proc/mem issue.

@Pse I was copying some movies (~200GB) from a Brand New 2TB 7200RPM 64MB Seagate SATA III Hard Drive to another Brand New 2TB 7200RPM 64MB Seagate SATA III Hard Drive on my desktop and the music stops and starts to buffer several times, not only the music, web browsing and general apps are slow (i think that they are trying to add data to the hard drive and getting the same problem as musics).
I managed to take a screenshot of iotop on one of those buffers:
Click to get bigger
@Pse i'm using ext4 with relatime and root reserved of 1%.
ps. those hard drivers are pratically empthy, has less than 10% of use.
Edit: And the genfstab add a option data=ordered on my fstab, what is it? has some relation with the problem? On my debian i jsut use relatime and rw options.

Wait, I'm a little confused. On my day old iMac running Mavericks, do I install iDVD from my iLife 11 disk, or somehow copy the app from my existing iMac and install it on my new one?

The following may be a bit easier set up the new Mac with the same iDVD capability on your old Mac:
1 - copy your current iDVD application from the old Mac to the Applications folder of the new Mac. The latest version available is 7.1.2.  If you don't have that versoin go to the Apple Downloads site and download the iDVD 7.1.2 updater and run it on your current iDVD application.
2 - copy the iDVD folder that resides in the old Mac's HD/Library/Application Support folder to the same folder on your new Mac.

Have a LaCie external 2big RAID drive; two 1T drives in RAID 0 configuration (striped).  Drive works perfectly as one big 2T external disk but Mac Installer (Lion - App Store download & Snow Leopard DVD) refuse to install OS X Lion or OS X Snow Leopard on RAID drive.
Previous RAID - two 500g's in RAID 0 had SnowLeopard/Lion installed and worked just fine as bootable drive.
    Help!

Keep in mind a RAID 1 only protects you from hardware failure of one of the drives. It does not protect you if the hardware raid/chip set decides to take a vacation. Also, if FCP corrupts a file, it is written as corrupt to both drives.
I'm a big fan of separate but equal. Two drives. One goes to the site, the other remains at the hotel. At night, you back up the site disk to the the hotel disk. If something happens to the computer and the disk at the site the next day, you at least have the material back at the hotel.
eggs. baskets. that sort of thing.
    good luck.

  • Why is my macbook pro running slow.  It runs slow even if only one app is open, especially if it's a browser.  I don't know how to read Etrecheck, but was hoping someone who does can help me out.  Would be super grateful.  :-)

Hi.  This is my first time posting.  My Macbook Pro with Os X Mavericks has been running super slow since before I installed Mavericks so I'm pretty sure it's not the OS that has the problem.  It runs slow even if only one app is open, especially if it's a browser, particulary google chrome.  If mail is open...forget about it, down to a crawl.  I don't know how to read Etrecheck, but was hoping someone who does can help me out.  Would be super grateful.  :-)
P.S. - Also, it sounds like something is loose inside my mac.  How should I proceed?
    Thanks in advance.

Had to buy a new PC as the hard disk of the old one broke and lost all purchases, but still have them on the iPhone. How can I sync them back to the new PC in iTunes without losing them?

    You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

  • Can't selectively install one app from fcs2

Why can't I just reinstall Motion? I've deleted the app & the .pkg files. All the other apps are selected & greyed out when I try to just install Motion. The message I get states that there is an older version of FCS (or whatever) installed...it is actually a newer version. Is it possible to just install one app under these conditions?
    Thanks,
    Mike McPhail

Ahhh! Got it. I must log in as Admin and run Pacifist on the FCS Install disk. I found the Motion app there & it would let me install it as Admin. Just entering the admin password in my user account didn't work.
    Thanks everyone!

  • How to obtain a disk image (dmg) for an app from the App Store

Is there anyway to obtain a disk image (dmg) for an app from the App Store?
I need to obtain an dmg for a small App that is only available from the App store, but I need to put it on a Snow Leopard machine that does not have App Strore installed (and cannot be upgraded further).

Any Mac with Snow Leopard can be updated to 10.6.8, which includes the MAS. Just download the 10.6.8 update combo and install it on that Mac.
    Mac OS X v10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
You also do not need a dmg, just copy the app from one Mac to another. Unless the app has an installer MAS apps are simple drag & drop installation apps. If it has an installer drag & drop the installer and then run it on the Mac where you want the app.
Most MAS apps require a minimum of Mac OS X 10.6, and many require 10.6.6, 10.6.7, or 10.6.8 to run.

  • Problem Re-Installing Sun One App Server 7 on Solaris 8

I will try my best to describe my problem.
I successfully installed Sun One App Server 7 Standard Edition on Solaris 8. It was installed on a mounted secondary hard disk. That hard disk has since gone bad. I bought a new hard disk and have that mounted.
I want to install Sun One App Server 7 again. I am installing through the GUI, but do not the options to install the server even though it is completely gone. I guess the installer seems to think that the product is already installed, even though the previous hard disk with all of the application server files are gone. Is there any way to uninstall or remove the installed status of the application server so I can reinstall?
    Thanks.

Thanks! I tried the prodreg tool and found the Application Server node, and clicked Uninstall. It went through an uninstall process. Even though it came back with an error, the re-install process after worked great. Thanks again.

  • How do i get my ipod touch to download more than one app at a time, can i make it toware i dont have to wait for one app to download before it starts downloading another,

my ipod will only download one app at a time and runs extremely slow. i was wondering if there is some way that i can make it download more than one app at a time and how can i make the app start downloading again after i have left my wi-fi zone and then went back in. im really confused.

Download everything on your computer in iTunes, then sync your iPod to iTunes.
You should be syncing (backing up) to iTunes and your photo app regurally, anyway.

  • Can you download more than one app at a time?

Basically, can I purchase two apps for OS X, both large downloads, and leave it overnight trusting both to be ready when I come back to the machine? Will they download one at a time, or concurrently?
    Thanks

Only one app can be downloaded simultaneously. However, if you select to install both before going to bed, both should be downloaded and installed when you wake up, before when one app finishes installing, the other one will start being installed

I upgraded from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 6.  Everything converted fine.  Yesterday I deleted an app in error.  When I downloaded the software it from iTunes ( did this many times on the old 3GS), my account is no longer recognized by the app's host servers (Playtika), even though it did after the initial conversion.  Can I go back and re-sync just one app from my old phone?

Try deleting what is called the iPod Photo Cache.

  • IPhone installs one app at a time, why?

I have an iPhone 4S and an iPad 2.  Both are running iOS 6.1.3.  For the longest time, the way my iPhone and iPad install or upgrade apps has differed.
For my iPad, the install/update process for multiple installs/updates works like this:
    1. Download first app
    2. Start installing the app and simultaneously start downloading next app.
For my iPhone, the process works like this:
    1. Download app.
    2. Install app.
    3. Once install is finished, download next app.
In other words, my iPad will download an app without waiting for the prior one to finish installing, while my iPhone downloads and installs one app at a time.  Because of this it takes longer to update apps on my iPhone than on my iPad.   This is case over both cellular and Wifi.
I'm assuming the way the iPad is working is the correct method.  Why doesn't my iPhone work the same way?

Whil you can run two apps at the same time, i.e. Music and Safari, you can only see one app at a time.

  • Developer Application Provisioning Issues -- Only one app at a time?

    _The upshot:_
You can have one and only one developer provision and developer application on the iPhone at a time otherwise you get installation errors (i.e. 0xe8000001).
    _To fix:_
Use Xcode Organizer to ensure that you have one and only one application and provision installed to the iPhone that uses your developer certificate.
    _To any Apple people:_
If I am wrong about any of this, please let me know. I have wasted 3-4 days over the past 2 weeks due to these issues, and any explanation would be well received! Having one and only one application and provision installed to the iPhone fixed the 0xe8000001 issues for me.
    _Long winded explanation:_
It turns out that I am working on multiple iPhone applications at the same time.
Each application has a different AppID (as registered on the iPhone Developer Portal).
I have spent quite a bit of time having major issues with Developer Provisioning and application installation from within Xcode and Xcode Organizer, which led me to not be able to debug my application on a live iPhone.
I finally discovered my problem: I can only have one app and one provision on the iPhone that uses the same developer certificate.
When swapping between Xcode projects if I remove all provisions and applications using Organizer and re-add only the provision of the application I am working on, then the install errors at build time go away.
Samples of install errors that manifest themselves using the 0xe8000001 code:
Thu Aug 21 16:56:02 unknown mobileinstallationproxy[770] <Error>: entitlement 'application-identifier' has value not permitted by provisioning profile
    Thu Aug 21 16:56:02 unknown mobileinstallationproxy[770] <Error>: verify_executable: Could not validate signature: e8008016
-- Taken from the Xcode Organizer Console window for my development iPhone --
These errors seem to be occurring because of an install time check against the installed provision files to verify the app, and it seems the provision from an already installed application is being used.
This is probably occurring because the main developer certificate has to be the same between the 2 applications. As the scan through the provisions is occurring, the certificate of the new app matches the certificate from the already installed app, and the provision check fails due to different App IDs.
There is one and only one developer certificate allowed per iPhone Standard program.
I hope that this helps some other people out there with their development provisioning and debug / installation errors.
    --Batgar

This is why you should create a wildcard developer certificate (com.youcompany.*)...follow the directions in the program portal. Then you can then install all your apps on your phone.

  • One App   Two iPhones   Different iTunes Accounts

I currently have an iPhone 5 and I will be upgrading to an iPhone 6. I'm going give the iPhone 5 to my brother. I purchased a TomTom Navigation App and I want the App to be available on both phones but managed through different iTunes accounts. How should I go about doing this, if possible?
If it isn't possible to do this because the App is linked to my iTunes account, can I, instead, manage my iTunes account on multiple computers? Or is it that one computer can handle multiple devices?
I read the following two forums but they are not exactly the same questions as mine.
    One APP to Multiple iPods?
Can you use apps from one computer/iTunes accounts on multiple iPhones?

Suppose I authorize another computer to use my current iPhone 5 and sync apps to that computer. Then I get my iPhone 6 and sync my apps to this new phone. Then I change the apple ID on one of the two computers. Would leave the installed apps on both devices? I don't have the new iPhone yet as I'm waiting to get an unlocked GSM version directly from Apple so I can't try this right away.

  • How do I download one app at a time in itunes or appstore

Hi there fellow apple lovers, just got my first iphone, you see I have a habbit of downloading from the app store simultaneously, is there anyway I can set my iphone 5s to download one app at a time, well in other words queing them so that if a download finishes, it will automatically download the next app

If the program/window is not a text-based one (such as a word processor), you can usually use the up and down arrow keys to scroll up or down one line at a time.
There are often mods to this behavior, but exactly what depends on the program. Test with the up and down arrow keys in conjunction with the usual modifier keys - Shift, Command, Option, etc.
