Disk layout for new database

We want to set up Oracle 10G on our new server on Linux Redhat and I was just wondering if we should have separate hard drives for the logs, data and index, and OS or if it is fine to just put all of it on one hard drive partitioned out and RAIDed.
Please suggest the optimal solution.
Thanks.

Hi,
In ideal world: separate hard drives for the online relogs, archived logs, and TEMP...
Here is a great discussion on RAID:

  • Best practice DISK Layout for E-business suite 11i or R12 in SAN enviornmen

    Hi,
Does any one have any document on best practices on DISK Layout for E-business suite 11i or R12 in SAN enviornment?
    My thoughts are :
    Mount point 1 =Oracle Binary
    Mount point 2 =Data files
    Mount point 2 =Index files
    Mount point 2 =Archived logs
    Please suggest

On our HPUX node, we have each environment (PROD, TEST, DEV) on it's own separate mountpoint. Each mountpoint is a separate LUN (Vdisk) on our SAN (an HP EVA4400). No performance issues at all. Our Windows nodes runs Apache and forms, and that is on the internal disks on the windows machine itself. Hope this helps.

  • Can I create x1 CR layout for all databases

    Hi
Is it possible to have x1 Crystal Report Layout for x17 Databases with different Logos (Logos are based off the databases), a little detail:
We have x17 databases on the same SQL Server, I have created a Crystal Report which can be used for all companies / databases but I am wanting to know if there is a possibility to have this x1 Crystal Report and everytime you print from the relevant database it pulls that specific company Logo? Is there any Crystal Syntax to create this? especially when the field is labelled "Picture2" and is not a SBO Table & Field.
It seems logical than having x17 Crystal Reports.
    Any ideas?
    Regards
    Kurt Walters

    Hi Julie
Thanks for the reply, for your last alternative:
"An alternative is to embed all 17 picture files into your layout, one on top of the other, and conditionally suppress each one based on the database name"
I tried this with an If statement based off Company Name on the OADM table but was having issue with the If Statement (Format Editor > (X+2) Button next to Supress > Format Formula Editor - Suppress).
I will give the Print Preferences a Go but will it be possible with a If statement?

  • Trouble using asm instance for new database

I have an asm instance and am trying to create a new database that will use the asm storage. I'm using dbca to create the new database. This is a test system on windows so I'm using the asmtool -create flatfiles for disks with the asmallow_only_raw_disks parameter set to false.
If I have #SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS) commented out in my sqlnet.ora, then I can't get into asmcmd:
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges (DBD ERROR: OCISessionBegin)
and dbca won't create the new database that uses asm because the dbca gets the same 01031 error when trying to create the control files for that database.
If I have SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS) NOT commented out, the I can get into asmcmd, but I can't startup the databases using sys, even though I am sitting at the server,
AND, dbca won't create the new database that uses asm becuase the dbca can't start the instance
    credential retrieval failure.
I'm in a catch 22. Something is not right with my system but I just can't seem to figure out what it is.
The asm instance does have a password file.

I let the dbca create scripts and am currently walking through the scripts. I think it's my asm database that is actually creating the problem. I did the orapwd and oradim manually and can startup nomount the instance just fine. The create database statement fails on creating the controlfile but it's saying it already exists. I suspected the dbca form wasn't giving me all the errors like it should.
Thanks for your suggestion on the password file.

  • Is it possible to add support for new database type in Data Modeler?

    Hi,
I see that Data Modeler v.4 supports different versions of Oracle, DB2 and MS SQL. Is it possible to add support for a new database family,
PostgreSQL for example? I hoped that RDBMS Site editor can do it, but so far I don't see any possibility to add XML files with metadata for a new RDBMS.
I did it previously for PowerDesigner were it is possible to add and modify definitions for new relational databases.
    Thank you,
    Sergei

I want after creation of a custom database to execute a script that will create a Network Service without having to go through the UI
Its just adding those 5 lines at tsnames.ora on the client dir
How can I do i through a script?
So I can plant it after Create DB script and have both in 1 step.
    P.S.
The most obvious keywords on main SE don't return something for this so it worths adding it
keywords : how to create client network service from script oracleWrong approach.
Better: create database template and execute dbca in silent mode.
Also execute netca in silent mode as Harrison suggest.
PS: Adding the 5 lines to tnsnames.ora does not create a network service, first you have to set the "service_names" init parameter and the listener will create the service when the database starts (simplified explanation).

  • Do we need run catbundle.sql file for new databases.

    dear all,
i have doubt over execution of catbundle.sql or not?
    scenario:
    i have insatlled 10gr2 on rhel5 and applied patchset 4 (10.2.0.5) and applied Oracle® Database Patch 10248542 - 10.2.0.5.2 Patch Set Update
after this i have create fresh database.
    now,
in Oracle® Database Patch 10248542 - 10.2.0.5.2 Patch Set Update document it has specified in belwo section
3.4 Post Installation Instructions for Databases Created or Upgraded after Installation of PSU 10.2.0.5.2 in the Oracle Home
These instructions are for a database that is created or upgraded after the installation of PSU 10.2.0.5.2.
You must execute the steps in Section 3.3.2, "Loading Modified SQL Files into the Database" for any new database only if it was created by any of the following methods:
Using DBCA (Database Configuration Assistant) to select a sample database (General, Data Warehouse, Transaction Processing)
Using a script that was created by DBCA that creates a database from a sample database
Cloning a database that was created by either of the two preceding methods, and if the steps in Section 3.3.2, "Loading Modified SQL Files into the Database" were not executed after PSU 10.2.0.5.2 was applied
Upgraded databases do not require any post-installation steps.
so do we need to run catbundle here or not.
since i have created fresh database after applying 10.2.0.5 PSU2 why does it required.

  • Disk Layout for a RAC deployment on a shoe string

Hi, not sure if this is better placed under RAC or Linux group.
I am planning a demo RAC system using 2 linux servers and due to stingy managers, the smallest budget ever imagined !
I will have the 2 servers networked but am looking at a cheapo disk setup ( excluding virtualisation and SAN/NAS ). I currently have
    Server A and Server B
Each has an Internal disk of 250 Gb – I am going to place the linux OS on here, the 11gR2 Oracle Grid Infrastructure Home and the 11gR2 Enterprise Edition Oracle Home
Q1. Since the local server is where the Oracle Instance runs – would I be correct in assuming this is where the SPFILE for the instance goes as well i.e. Server A and B will both hold an SPFILE in the 11gR2 ORACLE_HOME ?
Q2. What else should be stored on the local server – all the usual logs etc ( eg the instance alert log etc ) ? Is it normal to put a copy of the database control file on each local server ?
My plan was to carve up the 250 Gb disk into a root partition ( for Linux ) and a /u01 partition for the Oracle Grid Infrastructure Home and the Database Oracle Home
I was then going to use the remainder of the 250 Gb Disk in Server A as the shared disk ( for RAC ) between the Servers.  I am going to attempt to NFS mount the remainder of the 250 Gb disk on Server A ( disgusted I have no budget for NAS ! ), so Server B will have access to it.
What I was not sure about is –
Q3. in regards to ASM Disk Groups, I wasn’t sure if ASM can discover disk space for use, once it has been mounted as a standard file system ( or in my case as an NFS mount ) ?
Q4. How does ASM interact with standard file system mounts ( if at all ) ?
Q5. If a physical disk has some standard filesystems mounted on it, can ASM use / discover any remaining part of a disk that has not been configured as a filesystem ?
Q6. I am assuming the FRA is better placed on the Shared Disk ( so both nodes have access to it ) ?
    Any guidance would be appreciated,
    Jim

This won't be a RAC, Jim.
What are you going to use as Interconnect? Do these machines have a 2nd physical NIC? You realise that crossover Ethernet cables are not supported. Is this Gigabit Ethernet? RAC Interconnect over a 10 or even 100 Mb/s  Ethernet, is significantly below par.
Where are the OCR and Voting Disks going to reside?
ASM is in my view, mandatory. It makes no sense not using ASM for RAC. ASM needs raw devices to use. It does not run on cooked file systems. NFS shares the latter.
If NFS is used, over what IP layer is it going to run? The same as the Interconnect? Which would be  an irony as the the RAC db cache is now using the same transport layer as it does for physical I/O - both are over slow Ethernet vying for the same bandwidth.
RAC is only as sound and as robust as the h/w it is build on. Stuff up with the hardware and you WILL have an inferior and unstable RAC. Accompanied with utter frustration as it will not work the way it should.
IMO - the ONLY way one can build a 2 server RAC without a SAN or NAS, is with Firewire. Using a shared Firewire 800 disk that supports 2 separate servers at the same time. And then use this Firewire disk as shared storage. This is not supported by Oracle for production use - but past support notes did say that this is a config that can be considered for a dev type RAC.
If the 2 servers do not support Firewire 800, then 2 x Firewire 800 PCI cards (and cables) are needed, in addition to the Firewire drive.

  • Windows could not start DBConsole for new database instance

    Hi,
I am getting this error "Windows could not start the OracleDBConsoleOracleInstance2 on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the system vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 1".
I installed Oracle 11g on Windows 7 and created my 1st database instance (oracleInstance1) successfully with a listener and service configured. I could access this database using DBconsole URL: https://hostname:1158/em.
I see the services started for:
    OracleDBConsoleOracleInstance1
    OracleOraDb11g_home1TNSListener
    OracleServiceOracleInstance1
Next, I created a second database instance (oracleInstance2) and have configured a new service for this database. I am using the same listener as I intend to use one database instance at any point of time.
However, I got this warning message during configuration:
"Enterprise manager configuration succeeded with the following warning - Error starting Database Control. Please execute the following command(s).
    1. Set the environment variable ORACLE_UNQNAME to Database unique name.
    2. C:\Oracle\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\bin\emctl.bat start dbconsole"
To start the new database console, I stopped the previously running DBConsole, OracleDBConsoleOracle1 and started the new DBConsole OracleDBConsoleOracle2 and get the above error.
When I try to start dbconsole manually using "emctl dbconsole start", it starts OracleDBConsoleOracle1 instead.
    I changed environment variables ORACLE_SID=oracle2 and ORACLE_UNQNAME=oracle2
What am I missing here. Please help!
    Thank you.

From a command prompt, enter the following:

    set ORACLE_UNQNAME=oracle2
    set | sort

emctl start dbconsolecopy the entire session, commands and full responses, and paste back here.

Thank you.Just to take a side road ...
"I am using the same listener as I intend to use one database instance at any point of time. "
Doesn't' matter if you use one instance or 100. The listener was DESIGNED to service multiple instances of multiple versions running from multiple homes. It is nothing but a connection broker. A telephone switchboard, if you will. All you need is a single listener, with the default name of LISTENER, running on the default port of 1521. It will handle all the database instances you care to throw at it. More instances than anyone in their right mind would ever put on a single server. Your server will run out of capacity to host additional instances before the listener runs out of capacity to service them. Especially since your 'server' is really just a toy in the Oracle world.

    Hi,
Please use DisplayName, LegacyDN, or ExchangeGuid in Indentity parameter for testing.
It depends on which mailbox database as opposed to AD (as AD is bypassed to mail Restores possible) the information stored in.

  • Layout for editing database record

    Hi!
I'm trying to make a JPanel display a database record for editing in a nice way, but I'm kinda stuck. Example:
            Id: 10
    First name: Peter
    Last name: Johnson
Age: 20 and so on. The problem is that I don't know what strategy to use for the layout management, so that it looks good. I use JLabel for all labels and the Id number, since it's not editable, and JTextField s for the other data. I want the labels for the fields right aligned and the textfields left aligned "in their container", so that there is a streight line between the :s. (I hope you understand...)
    Any help appreciated!
    /Jan

    Thanks!
The missing link was the FlowLayout.RIGHT constant. I guess I hadn't done my homework.
    Thanks for pointing that out!

  • What's the Best Photoshop CS5 Scratch Disk Setup for New MacPro 12 Core?

    Hello all...
I'm awaiting delivery of a new MacPro 12 Core with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD drive (Bay1) + 2TB (Bay2) + 2TB (Bay3). Normally I would partition about 60GB of one of the 2TB drives to make an exclusive scratch disk for Photoshop to ensure optimum performance.... with the new spec MacPro and especially the new 512GB SSD, do I still need to do this..?
Any suggestions of comments most welcome... as I want to try to get my new machine set up as best I can before I start copying over my existing data and filling hard drives etc. Photoshop CS5 and Quark Express 8 are my two core apps that I use daily.

…Well yes, technically you've got me on that I will admit.  I'll try to rephrase to be a bit more accurate. The best scratch disk is one you don't need to rely on performance wise, by having enough RAM to handle the data performance needy tasks that would otherwise be sent to the scratch disk, when enough RAM can't be accessed by Photoshop…
    …Hows that?
    Still wrong, alas.
The scratch disk is used always.
See this very short (two-message) thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2847996#2847996
    Excerpt:

…Photoshop needs to allocate scratch space for data, in case it needs to
write that data to disk later -- otherwise you would randomly fail with
"out of scratch space" in the MIDDLE of an operation…
Furthermore, Photoshop sets the size of the scratch disk ahead of time—the instant you open an image file or create a new document—basing it on assumptions the application makes taking into account your usual, past workflow practices, your settings and the pixel dimensions of the document.
Bottom line:  the scratch disk always plays a part.
Do a forum search filtering the options with Chris Cox in the "Who" box, "scratch" as key word, and Photoshop Macintosh as the forum.  You'll find some enlightening reading.  Examples:

  • Disk Image for new IBooks

I just purchased 11 new Ibooks for my school and am interested in loading up the first one with all of our software that we use and then creating a disk image of the hard drive to then install the software on the other 10. Is this possible and a good idea?

You could always set up the first "golden" iBook the way you want.
    Grab another iBook.
Boot this other iBook in Firewire target disk mode and connect it to the "golden" iBook.
Use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the "golden" iBook's hard drive to this other iBook.
Repeat the steps above until all of your iBook's are done.

  • Problem when using template for new database (ora10g)

    Hi all,
I've done this a few times now, on different servers weeks apart.
I have an Oracle 10g install on a Windows Server 2003 box, and I have run the database configuration assistant to create a database. We will have several databases with the exact same setup when I move Oracle 10g to a production environment. I created the database exactly as I need it the first time round, then I save it as a template to use for the next ones. However, when I run the template I get the following error:
    ORA-01501: CREATE DATABASE failed
ORA-09314: sltln: error translating logical name
Whats driving me nuts is, if I just go ahead and retype everything back in the same as the last database it works fine, just seems to be the template which is messing me up.
Heres the template I'm trying to use (hope just pasting it like this is ok.. if not, please some mod remove it and I'll attach it)
    Thanks!

  • No gui option in disk utility for new hdd in white unibody mbp

    Hello,
i replaced the harddisk in my white unibody macbook with an
Samsung Spinpoint M9T 1TB HDD out of a seagate backup portable drive.
disk utility can erase it, and partition it, but it does not show the option to create a GUI partition.
restoring from time machine backup does not work
installer for leopard, from the original dvd states that it needs that.
    what can i do?
    hope to hear from you.
    ps:
on my imac and my mbp the bootable disk is mac os extended(journaled)
    so no 'gui-partition' there

Aha! I only looked at 'format' list, didn't notice the 'option' list.
    problem solved.
    thank you !
