First I got the message that the HD is damaged; Tried to repair , but no success; tried to restore from my external drive, but nothing happens. So tried to re install and now it says "this disk is locked"
Appreciate any help.

We aren't clairvoyant. You will need to provide more information than you have. Check if your machine meets the requirements:
Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
    OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
         1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later

Just erased my disk, whent to install Maverick and get : "Not available now" message since yesterday. Can someone help me revive my dead IMac!!

If you are selling or giving away the computer then follow these instructions:
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
           A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must
be shut down from inside Windows.
           B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
              1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
              2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
              3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right side.
              4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be sure
                  to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
              1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
              3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
              4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
              5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See What to do with iCloud before selling your computer.
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
         A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
              1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
              2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
              3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              4. Install OS X.
              5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
              6. Shutdown the computer.
         B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
              1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
                  Utilities window appears.
              2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
              3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
              4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
              6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
              7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
              8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.

  • I have a MBP running Mountain Lion. Tried to install Mavericks, but it keeps telling me that my disc is used as time machine backup, and cannot install Mavericks, any help appreciated

I have a 2011 MBP running Mountain Lion. Tried to install Mavericks, but it keeps telling me " cannot install Mavericks because disc is used for Time Machine backup". I tried disabling TM by issuing the command in console " sudo tmutil disable local". Still no luck. Is there a way of erasing all the time machine backups from my system disc?
    Thanks.

Thanks Matt. I tried erasing the "Backups.backupdb" folder. It does not allow me to do that, inspite of "sudo"-ing. I ended up installing Mavericks on another disc, and use disc migration assistant to transfer my data, before swapping out the old disc from the MBP.

  • System really messed up with all folders locked after installing Mavericks

Wow, I love Mac, but this last OS install of Mavericks has sent me for a loop, not only did it erase all of my files except for applications, it turned my computer into a fresh off the shelf Mac and I lost most everything in settings in all applications. I have been working over the past month now to restore a sense of order but things will never be the same. All I did was go to the app store and choose install, this has never happened to me in the past. Okay, I'll quit whining about that and get to my question: Can I easily fix the fact that all of my folders are now locked both on my computer and on my external hard drives. I'm blaming the Mavericks install for all of this as I've never had this problem before installing Mavericks, not in my history with using Macs since the mid 1980's.
When I want to save a file from within an app, say InDesign, or Photoshop, I get an error that the folder is read only. then I have to save my file to the desktop and go to the finder level, find the folder and get info and with my password make the change to make it unlocked.
Foo, this is aggrivating, I know I can't go backward and fix anything that might have been done wrong, but I need to know if there is a way where I can unlock everything like it used to be without having to go through thousands of folders one-by-one doing this unlocing with password proceedure.
    Whew,
    TIA,
    Ken

The screenshot is also showing an external disk, so repair permissions won't touch it unless it's bootable, hence the 20 questions.
I do think you would be wise to boot to recovery & repair the boot disk permissions before we address the other permissions.
I would also use a hidden tool to reset all the user permissions too…
Backup before you begin just in case.
Boot holding cmd+R. Recovery mode should startup (assuming you have a recovery partition).
Select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
    Enter the word…
    resetpassword
    … & hit return.
The GUI app will open, select the main boot HD.
Select your user account in the popup menu.
Then click the Reset button at the bottom right. It will "Reset Home Folder Permissions & ACL's"
    Repeat for the other users.
    Quit ResetPassword from the menu,
    Quit Terminal
Another important question, do you care about the permissions on the externals? We can disable them for the entire volume. Obviously this leaves you open to other users viewing the files or deleting them etc, however anyone with physical access could damage your stuff anyway.

  • Cannot install mavericks!

Hi, I have a 2011 MacBook Pro. I have all the requirements for mavericks to be installed but i currently am using 10.6.8

Why can't this model take Mavericks? My MacBook is a champ and there's no reason to trash it!

  • Losing disk space after installing Mavericks

After installing OS X Mavericks, I had noticed my computer was losing disk space after updating some products. I even shut down my computer to allow it to readjust to the updates, cleared some unnecessary apps, and yet I see my computer losing more space, as if files are being added behind the scenes. I've adjusted my browser Safari to more private settings, even cleared the cache, to avoid this, yet it still occurs. Are there other files I should be clearing?

the trouble is I don't know what is causing the disk space to be taken. I'm idly using Safari with private browsing set, when I come looking at my finder, seeing the space gradually falling. I was at 695.02 GB available this morning, and now at 694.83 GB available. I've made no downloads in between then, so I'm wondering if this is the result of downloading Mavericks directly from the app store, or if there is a setting I need to fix. I've tried verrifying/repairing the disk, permissions too, but I still see the decrease occurring.

  • IMac gifted - cannot install Mavericks from Internet

We received an iMac (Model Nr: A1224) from family. it boots to a "OSX Dienstprogramme" (Time Machine restore, Mavericks new install, Disk Utilities).
We've tried several times to install from the APP Store, but after logging in (with **our** Apple ID) the message is that Mavericks is not available for the moment.
Does the iMac need to be "un-registered" from the previous owner (and their Apple ID) ?
Is Mavericks no longer available for installation ?
    thanks in advance

We had to buy Mavericks (OS 10.9). Therefore it may be listed in the App store under Purchases. To get to that page you will need the ID and password of the original buyer.
Since the computer is now yours, you should unregister from the previous owner and register it in your name and ID. That will give you access to the App store as yourself. Once there you can get Yosemite (OS 10.10.2). It is free.

    Hello,
    I have a MacPro early 2009 with OSX 10.7.5.
I can not install Mountain Lyon or Mavericks.
The process starts correctly, the computer restarts and begins installing. After a few minutes, it tells me it can not complete the installation and log appears.
I have Time Machine running with an internal drive that Tera is not the Macintosh HD drive where I install the new system.
I tried to disable Time Machine, and does not work.
    Any clues?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Cannot install Mavericks, upgraded to Snow Leopard, system identifier 4,1

    Hello all,
I am having issues upgrading to Mavericks.
    I am using a MacBook (purchased in 2008) , system identifier 4,2.
I have successfully upgraded to snow leopard and now running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
When i tried to download Mavericks a message came up saying that Mavericks could not be installed on this computer..although I was advised by apple that i could.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Lida

That is not what the Apple pages say about your Mac and Mavericks.
Personally I would trust that much more then some guy you spoke with.

  • OS X 10.6.8 MB 13" (not sure of year) meets hardware requirements, cannot install Mavericks.

If I have OS X 10.6.8 isn't that Snow Leopard? I'm trying to figure out why I can't update to Mavericks with all required hardware. The only thing I am not sure of is the year of my MB. How do I determine this? And why can't I update? Thank you
Processor: 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo
    Memory: 4GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, click on More Info, and check the model identifier against the following, which are the earliest Macs of each type that can run Mountain Lion and Mavericks:
    iMac7,1
    MacBook5,1
    MacBookPro3,1
    MacBookAir2,1
    Macmini3,1
    MacPro3,1
    Xserve3,1
A computer incapable of running Mountain Lion which has a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU and at least 2GB of RAM can run Lion 10.7, which is available by clicking here. Neither Mavericks nor Lion support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004.

    Thanks

It's going to be impossible to install Mavericks unless you have a working Mavericks-USB-installer or an  "install OS X Mavericks.dmg" that YOU have downloaded from the App Store in the past.
You should use a Snow Leopard install DVD to install 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on your Mac. From there, you can use your  "install OS X Mavericks.dmg" to install Mavericks. If you don't have that, you can download and install Yosemite from the Mac App Store instead.
If you don't have either a Snow Leopard install DVD or a custom made Mavericks-installer-USB, you should call Apple and buy a Snow Leopard install DVD from them. They're still for sale.
The other option is to use another, still functioning, Mac and connect the two using a firewire cable. Then you can use Target Disk Mode to install Mavericks or Yosemite on your Mac http://support.apple.com/nl-nl/ht1661

  • Install Maverick on new Ext disk, says "Disk is Locked"

Hello everyone, new here.  So my late '09 imac 21.5" running Maverick has been running incredibly slow lately (before installing Maverick), like moving the cursor across the screen and it has to load for a few second before it catches up, multiply that by a thousand anytime I use a program such as Safari, and forget about Garageband.  I used to regularly use Garageband with up to 8 tracks with no problem so this has only been recently.  I bought a new external hard drive, the WD My Passport Studio formatted for Mac, with intentions of backing up my HD and installing Maverick on the external, then when I can get a new internal HD to swap out for the dying one.
So I backed it up no problem, moved the install file to the new HD, restarted computer and held the option key.  Was able to get to the install file no problem but when asked where to install it showed my current HD's smart status as failing (as I expected, even with multiple verifys and no issue reported), but my new external HD as being locked.  I can get around a computer alright, but when I come to a problem I'm lost.  So I googled it a bit and found a few threads on how to unlock a WD passport, but the problem is every thread I found was prior to Maverick and every one was saying there were glitches on Maverick not letting the WD utilities work as intended.  I installed both utilities but did not use them.  I opened the security app but did not set up password. The threads were saying to delete the apps, which I did.  I've reformatted the new HD and rebacked it up again and still no luck.  I've gone into Disk Utility to turn off encryption but it's greyed out, held option key and clicked it and nothing happened.  Went back to install, still locked.
I've updated the HD firmware, verified the disk, tried firewire, every usb port, read countless threads, and nothing has worked yet.  I've installed OS X many time before on many different macs as well as installed many different HD's with formatting all without a single problem, this is my first so I guess it was bound to happen eventually.
So I apologize if this is vague, I'm not sure what information I should include or anything else you guys may need to help me.
Thank you in advance for any help you guys can give me.

NTFS format Mac OS X built-in support for writing is not easy.  If you formatted it NTFS, your NTFS addon for support of writing may need updating.   See my tip on formatting:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3003
Note changing the format will usually require an erase.  So if you did an NTFS format, that may be the issue.
Otherwise, you will need to check with the hardware vendor if there is any built-in backup software on the drive, that can be removed, and how.
These frequently get incompatible with updates.   Only use Time Machine, Carbon Copy Cloner, Disk Utility, or Superduper for backup.
Others may work, depending on operating system update.
