Disk manager not assigning usb enclosure drive a letter

LAPTOP:  Toshiba Satellite 1135-S155 Windows XP Home Edition.
current preinstalled 40 GB HDD message says it is failing & backup.  want to backup to usb enclosure using western digital 80 GB HBB (didn't want to shock the system). computer does detect my toshiba 4 GB flash drive & assigns drive letter E.  DEVICE MANAGER detects the western digital hdd as: usb device generic void disc, PROPERTIES claims Location 0; VOLUME shows Disk 1, unknown, unreadable, partion style as Not Applicable, 0 MB.  Disk Management does not show usb device thus doesn't even assign a Drive letter to it.  not attaching any other usb device while i have usb enclosure hdd hookup.  have gone through troubleshooting, reinstall, basically what i can find to do from "Windows XP Inside Out Manual" unless not looking in right place.
Should i place new western digital 80 GB HDD into computer, use original restore discs that came with system, then place old 40 GB HDD into usb enclsoure and copy that hard drive onto the new 80 GB HDD? Or what?
found a hero once in this forum & hopefully will find you again.  love my old clunker & don't want to give her up yet!

Hey, I'm back.  And with  SUCCESS!!!!
Was able to take new hard drive and connect to a laptop running VISTA.  VISTA recognized the new hard drive that was in the same USB external enclosure that I was using.  VISTA recognized in both Device Manager & the much needed DISK MANAGER.  Was able to initialize immediately w/no problemos!!  YIPEE SKIPPY.
Did I dare to be BAD?  You betcha!  Took the initialized HD back home & hooked up to the TOSHIBA Satellite 1135-S155.  Again, success.  My old DISK MANAGER saw it, I was able to continue to partition & format it!!!  Why WinXP Home Edition couldn't initialize it? - Is one I'll leave for the cosmos.
Anyway - Who says you can teach an old dog new tricks - HA!  Little did they know about ME - oh, ahem, and of course JERRY aka The HERO and also The Wondrous CEE-64.
So excited was I, and how could I NOT be?  That I immediately tried the FREE Acronis True Image Western Digital Edition that was suggested by The Wondrous CEE-64 on the 08-29-2009 7:03 PM session.  As I was hoochie-cooching around in my NEWER SHOES, I suddenly I noticed that after burning 'Volume 5' onto a CD-R - ERROR MESSAGE (Error occurred while writing to file), hmmm - inserted a different CD-R, again same message, hmmm - inserted a different CD-R yet, hmmm - same message & got the hint.    Shall I go on?  OK you asked for it.
After checking Western Digital website & running one of their programs.  The initialized, partitioned, formatted WD Scorprio Blue HD was just being recognized as a USB Generic Mass Storage Device. Hmmm - maybe because the Western Digital Edition couldn't detect the new hd being from WD, could that be  the problem?  Closed and uninstalled the FREE Acronis True Image Western Digital Edition.
Per HERO Jerry's suggestion on 8-27-2009 12:00 PM, I downloaded FREE Acronis True Image 2010 Home Edition.  Loaded fine, reread the users guide (serveral times).  Attached the USB external enclosure (YES, the hard drive was inside) started the program, used CLONE DISK option, TA-DA it worked.
Yep, it has to reboot.  Okey-dokey.  UNTIL it came to me having a problem.  This TOSHIBA requires an F1 button to be pushed after start up AND it doesn't like the USB GENERIC MASS STORAGE DEVICE to be attached during boot up.  It stops & requests either F2 (setup) or F_ (I forget) and doesn't respond until I 'safely remove the USB device', then the F1 button.  SOMEHOW, after swapping out the drives  (THAT went really well, pat on the back) & Started the computer up.  YUP, Toshiba intro screen pops up, then the F2 etc. screen, & waited longer than usual.  Pushed the F2, saw that it is the WD drive with larger capacity, exit, then a dark screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left hand corner came on.  That was it.  Nothing for a minute or two, tried just shutting the laptop off.  Wouldn't.  Ended up swapping the hard drives while the fan was running.  Using the old TOSHIBA 40GB drive again.
Whada say?  One more time for old times sake?  Or should I just hang it up?  What do I do now, pleazzzze and thank-you.
PS - Can't wait, this stuff is getting good!

This particular drive has two partitions on it currently, one of which is a DOSFAT_16_SHidden. I have been trying to play around and get this thing to format for a few days now on Linux, windows and my Mac. Should I just give up on it or what?

    Master Boot Record. Do this:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to MBR then click on the OK button. Set the format type to MSDOS. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

OS X Disk Utility not recognizing Seagate 3TB drive in dock
Been scouring the webs and can't quite figure this one out.
I just purchased a Seagate 3TB drive intending on using it for Backup.
Ended up plugging it into a dock and couldn't get it to show up in Disk Utility..
Interesting enough, I plugged this into an HP laptop and it displays just fine.
    Anyone know the solution?

I hooked my internal as an external up to my Mom's Macbook Pro and it recognized my HD. I'm thinking it is something internal with the hook-up, which is awesome, because maybe I can actually fix it!!!!  Any thoughts?

  • Hard drive gets error -50 when connected internally, but not in USB enclosure.

I have a SATA hard drive that works perfectly when connected through an external USB enclosure but whenever it's plugged into the internal SATA connector on my MacBook Pro I receive the error message "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." any time I attempt to move or copy a file to it.
This doesn't happen with any other hard drive I connect internally, so I don't believe it's an issue with the internal cable.
I have made sure all permissions are set to allow reading and writing to the drive as well as selecting the "Ignore ownership on this volume" option in the Get Info panel.

If I were you, I would just replace the drive. Since other drives work, you're probably right in assuming that it's not a SATA cable issue, but rather an issue with that specific drive.

  • How do i get the ipod to mount in itunes, it is seen by disk manag. not exp

ok i have worked on this piece for the last 7 hours and to no avail. I've tried the 5 r's five times, I've copied the usbinf.inf driver to the windows dir, even though it was already there. I've tried to get the explorer to recognize the device, no dice, (although it does show up in the management directory as a disk drive with an actual "ipod" label. I've changed the disk name to "M:" and that didn't work. Formatting is not an option b/c the disk is not enabled or so computer managment says. I've tried reinstalling itunes and itunes updater several times. I even downloaded the applications again just to make sure they weren't corrupt.
The message i usually get out of the updater is
"unable to mount ipod." ,(after a wait that has made me age several years).
Im at a loss not only b/c of the time ive spent trying to work this out, and all the forums I've read, but the reason all this started is the ipod fried my last motherboard, a Gigabyte technologies 8KNXP ultra REV 1, when i plugged the ipod into the usb ***!!! I've tried everything short of DOS prompt (of which I have limited understanding) to try and get her working, any suggestions?!?!?

Try following the steps in this article, and try to go about restoring your iPod again. See if you can't get it to work...

Also, it never hurts to try to put the iPod into disk mode whenever you're going to restore it.

  • "Failed" Xserve disk running well in USB enclosure

    Hi everyone,
I'm curious if anyone else has tried this and what their results might have been.
I had a pair of "bad" Xserve RAID hard drives (250 GB Hitachi's manufactured in April 2004) laying around from the last year or two. I don't remember the exact error messages that they threw at the time of failure, but I swapped them out and the RAID rebuilt itself on the new disks without issue.
I was cleaning some junk out the other day and happened upon these disks. I decided to pop one out of its chassis and drop it into a Rockfish USB 2.0 enclosure to see what might happen. When I powered it up and connected it to my Intel MacPro (10.4.11), I was asked if I would like to initialize the disk. Did that, and to my surprise, the disk showed up on the Desktop without a problem.
At this point, I decided to "push" the disk to see if I could get it to fail. Did the following:
    1) Ran a complete block scan with Drive Genuis. All ~490 million blocks passed and not a single bad one found.
    2) Formatted the drive to MS-DOS with Disk Utility and did a block scan in XP. Got the same result as #1 above.
    3) Successfully cloned my MacPro system using SuperDuper to the drive twice. Booted into the clones and ran them for most of the day without problem before cloning the USB back to the internal drive (again, without problem).
After doing this, I was curious on the status of the second disk. After swapping it into the USB enclosure, I found that it too seems to be "OK".
In case you are wondering, I also tried reintroducing one of the disks from the above into the RAID and it wouldn't accept the disk. My guesses are 1) the RAID is less forgiving to drive problems then having it in the Desktop setting; 2) the fact that S.M.A.R.T. is not supported via USB 2.0 is letting me get away with doing this since errors are not being reported; 3) the RAID drive chassis is the source of the problem. I would think that #3 in less likely then #2 and #1 since the chassis seems to be just drive and power cables.
Has anyone else tried something similar with "bad" Xserve RAID disks? If so, what were the results? At this point, I'm planning on using these disk as noncritical storage devices since they seem fairly solid. To bad they can't be put into the SATA bays of the MacPro....
    Looking forward to input.
    Cheers,
    Scott

    Here is an update:
The "failed" Xserve drive has been performing well over the last week. As Tony mentioned in a previous post, his attempt to freshly install OS X onto such a disk sometimes failed or during booting. To test this, I installed Leopard client to the disk successfully and was able to boot my desktop with it. However, after installing the 10.5.1 update, I could not longer boot from the disk. It would start the boot process, but would get stuck on the grey screen and not proceed any further (I tried it a few times, all cases ended just as Tony described). In fact, the boot disk seemed to stop spinning at that point and I was forced to shutdown using the power button.
Thinking that I may have finally "killed" the disk, I ran Disk Utility on it. To my surprise, it found no errors. So I erased the disk, cloned my Tiger 10.4.11 system and was able to successfully boot into it without problems.
    SO.....
Booting from a cloned OS X system WORKS, but booting from a fresh OS X install DOESN'T?!?!?
Hard for me to explain why this might be the case. Any opinions from people reading this?
    Thanks.

  • E3000 not seeing usb hard drive

have installed the latest firmware and my e3000 is not seeing my external drive at all. when i plug in a usb stick, it recognizes it fine.
it's a 1tb wd internal drive inside of an enclosure . my pc recognizes it fine when plugged in through the usb enclosure. it is formatted ntfs. the drive is being accessed because I can see the indicator lights on the enclosure flashing, but nothing is showing up in the router configuration page.

it other drives work here then its local to the WD drive.
yes i know i know you mentioned it works in a PC, that still does not mean the enclosure is good. the controller board in the enclosure could not be in agreement with the latest firmware.
can you reflash to the previous firmware to test? this for sure would rule out the drives enclosure/controller board...

  • Can not find USB Hard Drive with Airport Utility Programme

I am quite new to MAC and I am having difficulty making my Iomega External HD seen by the Airport Extreme Base Station (new version). I have the latest Aiport Utility software 5.2.1 but when I go to the hard drive section it does not see it. The drive is connected via USB. Can anyone help me please.

Hi, this could be caused if the hard drive isn't in the right file system. To make it work, it needs to be formatted in a 'MAC OSX EXTENDED' format. You can do this in Disk Utility if you connect the drive directly to the computer and go to applications/utilities/disk utility.
Another question that may be asked this external hard drive, does it have its own power supply? If it does it should be ok, but some small portable thieves power which the router probably wont provide. If this is the case you can sort it by getting a powered USB hub (which don't cost much).
Another issue you might come across was a bug I found if you give the Hard Drive a name and connect it to the router and it appears and the next time you unplug the router power and connect it again it sees it but you cant connect to it on any computer over the network, the hard drive name needs changing every time you unplug the router, its a silly bug but im glad I finally worked it out.
Also, Airport Utility has a new software update, so have a look for it, should be 7.2.1 now!
Let me know how you get on!

  • Disk Management not Working

Disk Management in W7 x64 appears to be non-functional. I've got a dual-boot configuration with Vista Ultimate. The problem appears to stem from the Virtual Disk Service not running. I am unable to manually start the service with a "path cannot be found" error. I'm sorry I don't have more detail then that. I will give more information later today when I get back to the computer and can input the exact error message. Anyone else have problems with Disk Management or other services that won't run?

     Hello,
What Virtual Disk software are you running?  That could be why it Disk Management is not working.  I have Virtual Clone Drive and i can still access my Disk Management screen just fine.

  • Disk erase needed after USB flash drive has been connected?

Hello. I apologize beforehand if this is a stupid question. Unfortunately, it looks like I'm going to have to return my new iMac because of a faulty screen. I have held off transferring files to see if the screen would be problem-free, but at one point I did connect a USB flash drive to my iMac. I copied just one file onto my desktop. My question is: when the flash drive is connected and files show up in the Finder window, does that mean there is now a lasting imprint of those files on my hard disk, even if I haven't actually copied them onto the desktop? I ask this because the flash drive has some sensitive data on it, and I'm debating whether or not to do a 7-pass erase before returning my iMac. Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you mean the Finder window showing the contents of the flash drive, no, there's nothing retained on your Mac from that collection of files once you dismount the flash drive.

  • Mac Version of PS6 Will Not Launch if Scratch Disk is Not Set to Boot Drive

Mac OS 10.8.2. PS6 will not launch unless the boot drive is set as the number one option for the scratch disk. Even if I choose another internal drive and set it as the number one option for PS6 it will not launch. Is there any kind of work around for this? My boot drive is only a 120GB SSD so I don't want to use it as the main scratch disk.

Curt good idea but no go. This is a fresh install of PSCS6. I ran the Apple Disk Utility three times and Disk Warrior on the boot drive. If I leave the Scratch Disk set to the boot drive no issues, only if I change the order of the scratch disk or if I do not have the boot drive selected as a possible option for the scratch disk.
Where is the 'ignor ownership' option found? I did a 'Get Info' and I don't see it in that window.

  • Eject key not operating USB DVD drive

    Hi guys
I have a 2012 Mac Mini running Mountain Lion and I'm using an official Apple bluetooth keyboard. I just bought a Samsung USB DVD drive and it ejects using the icon on the menu bar just fine. However the eject key on my keyboard is 100% unresponsive. Any thoughts? Is there an option I need to select? Before anyone suggests it, yes, I've tryed holding it down for a few seconds
Any help would be amazing. My OCD is kicking in and its driving me mad!!!

  • MacBook does not recognize USB hard drive

    Hello,
I have a MacBook 10.5.8 and I have been using an external hard drive (Mobile Drive Clasic 2.5'' 80-GB USB-2.0) to keep saves of important files. It has been working fine until now but I have recently used the same USB drive on a Windows 7, which would often not allow me to eject it, so I did the unwise and simply plugged it off at any rate a few times. This did not appear to cause any problems - but when today I tried to copy one file from my desktop to the USB drive it seemed to lag, I hit cancel, I restarted the computer and since then the USB drive does not show up at all. I plugged it in my Mac to see if it was a Windows problem, but to my surprise it does not show up there either, not in the Finder (I have the box checked in my Preferences) and not even in Disk Utility.
Is it possible that the USB drive was damaged beyond repair and that I cannot retrieve the data? What could possibly be the problem? :/

If the drive used to work with both computers and now works with neither one of them, the fault is with the drive. If it is not showing up in Disk Utility that would suggest a hardware fault.
There are a number of data recovery services that are usually able to get data back off of even badly damaged hard drives, you might try working with one of them. DriveSavers is well thought of. They are not cheap though. You will want to decide how much that data is worth to you.
    Best of luck.
