Disk Managment cannot recover Macintosh HD in recovery mode

Hi,
Today I used my iMac in Bootcamp and after I was done I tried to restart in Mountain Lion. But it didn't go as expected.
Instead of the normal loading animation I was shown a loading bar that slowly filled. After the loading bar was full I got the normal loading
animation, but it kept going for hours without anything happening.
I decided to turn my iMac off and check the disk in recovery mode. After checking it with disk mamagment it showed some problems and recommended me to recover/repair the disk. That's the point where it goes wrong ,because it can't recover/repair the disk after trying multiple times.
So is there anyone familiair with this problem and if so do you know how to counter it?

Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD/DVD though.

  • How to recover iphoto library from recovery mode

My macbook pro suddenly went on Utility Disk Mode and can only be accessed through recovery mode. I cannot even view the files. I'm willing to let everything go except for the photos and videos in the iphoto library. I don't know how to access my photos on icloud and when I did, it was just my iphone's photos that are there. is there any way I can view my photos in my locked macintosh hd in other devices or computer?

Thanks for the response BDAqua, I did use Migration Assistant to transfer her data from the SuperDuper backup.  Are you suggesting that I use Migration Assistant to transfer data from the Time Machine backup?  Will that result in duplication?  Sorry, but I've no experience at all with Time Machine backups and don't know whether you can 'pick and choose' what to restore from the Time Machine using Migration Assistant.

  • Cannot Format Hard Drive in Recovery Mode

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to perform a fresh OS X install on my MacBook Pro Mid-2012 13." I booted into internet recovery mode (to install Mountain Lion instead of Mavericks), but when I try and partition my hard drive, Disk Utility gives an error that reads "Partition failed with the error: File system formatter failed." Disk Utility then leaves me with a greyed-out volume labeled disk1s1. My MacBook Pro has the stock 500 GB HDD.
As an experiment, I successfully formatted the disk as NTFS with a Windows 7 boot CD, and also as FAT32 from Disk Utility, so I don't think the disk is failing. Also, verify disk runs without errors before I try and partition the disk. After partitioning, it tells me that I need to reformat.
I think the problem can be narrowed down to partitioning the drive with Disk Utility as JHFS+ (I also tried HFS+ via DiskUtil). Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?
    Thank you in advance.

You can not use the recovery drive itself to reinstall OS X, but you can reinstall OS X without de-encrypting the drive.
WARNING: following these steps will remove all data from your harddrive. This process will in all likelyness not be reversible. Use at your own risk.
    1. Prepare a recovery USB stick [1].
    2. Boot from this stick
    3. Start Disk Utility
    4. Select the hard drive
    5. Select the Partition tab
    6. Change Volume Scheme to 1 Partition
    7. Enter Macintosh HD in the name field
    8. Click Apply
Your hard drive is now empty, you can use the installer on the same USB stick to re-install a clean OS X on your machine.

  • How to recover a datafile in recovery mode

    Hi,
We have a datafile that's 0 bytes in size and is in recovery mode. I see that the datafile is showing as available in dba_data_files but in v$datafile, it's showing the status as recover. This is in Production and the tablespace has been in this mode since last november. We are not able to offline drop the datafile as it is in recovery mode. How can this be corrected without bringing the instance down? Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

I would definitely contact Oracle support for something like this on my production database.
Here are some ideas, but some will require some production downtime to complete.
    1) Export everything that is in the tablespace that contains the datafile. Drop the tablespace including contents, create the tablespace and import everything back in......Not a good solution but it is a solution...of course there are a lot of things to consider like triggers, foreign keys and similar. This should be tested a lot.
    2) Create logical standby with corrected structure and switch to logical standby for production when complete. This will take a lot of work and testing on a test system.
    3) Another possibility would be to move tables within this tablespace to a new tablespace and then drop the old tablespace. (Performance hit but safe and no down time).
    4) If indexes then drop and recreate new indexes (Performance hit but safe and no down time.)
Once you get everything cleared out of the tablespace you should be able to drop it including contents and storage.
Of course I would try any thing I do out on a test environment before doing anything to my production environment.

  • How to unlock Macintosh HD in recovery mode?

    Good Evening,
Have a little dilemma. Went to update my wife's Mac Book Pro to OS X 10.9.5 today and ended up in recovery mode. Looks like something messed up during the update. There are files that have not been backed up on the drive which makes matters worse. I have attempted to reinstall OS X Mavericks in recovery mode but it won't let me do it because the Macintosh HD is locked. How do I unlock this drive without erasing all the contents in it?
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Disk Utility cannot repair Macintosh HD

    Hey everyone,
My computer has been faulty for a while now, been running on Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5.
I originally noticed the issue at hand when i tried to download maverick, but Macintosh HD was not a viable download location as it was already being used by Time Machine, I tried fiddling around with it but to no avail.
Eventually, I decided to verify if there was any problem with my HDD, and when I verified in Disk Utility, it said it needed repairing ("Disk Utility can't repair this disk...disk, and restore your backed up file"). It kept on telling me that the "volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired after 3 attempts"). Now I've just tried restarting my computer and I'm getting the notorious grey screen of death where I get the progress bar and a scroll, at the end of the bar, my MacBook Pro just switches off!
Luckily I have all my stuff backed up on a WD external HD, so my whole computer is backed up. Can anyone please resolve this for me? I have been through the step by step guides already available, but want to avoid erasing and re downloading if possible.
    Thanks,
    Felix.

Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Disk Management - Cannot Extend Volume - Grayed out

    Hello,
i can not select extend volume as it is grayed out.
im wanting to extend my windows 7 partition into the unallocated space to the right of it, but cant.
i also have a small 30mb partition left over im wanting to extend the xp partition into it, this is also grayed out.
    please help.

    Hi there,
If you want to extend volume, you should make sure there is no partition between the original partition and free space (PS: it will not work if the free space is in "Extended partition"). Attached a simple screenshot in my test machine:
    http://cid-9c88b7cb6fa32a48.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/Extend.jpg
If you have dual-boot Windows XP and Windows 7, I suggest you create new partition with left free space and mount this partition as a folder to XP (or Windows 7 ) partition which is quite easy.
What do you think about it?
The OP is right on this one, and the replies are not accurate. I too have Win 7 installed on C: and on its own during setup is used only 100gb of my 1tb drive. So I have 900gb unallocated.
Win 7 will not allow C: to be extended to use the unallocated space. The option is grayed out.

  • Profile Manager cannot set ibooks as single app mode in iOS

Right now I had updated all my iPad to iOS 8.0.2, and the server is updated to the newest version, too.
Sadly, When I want to setup the iPad to single app mode with iBooks, I cannot find it in the list.
Is this means ibooks is no long support on the single app mode? Then why give us the new function about push ibooks?
I have try the assistant function on my iPhone (8.0.2) itself, it can be locked in iBooks.
Any one can tell me what is the problem?
    Many many thanks!

    HI Hines,
I had the same problems after the 3.0.2 update: enrolling of devices not working, unable to push configurations from Profile Manager, etc.
The update was a simple 3.0.1 => 3.0.2 on already updated OSX Mavericks to 10.9.1 and it seemed that all was ok, not like this situation: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24450438
    Services used:
    -Web
-Profile Manager with 20 iPads/iPhones already enrolled and with some in-house app pushed
I followed a solution similar to what suggested from Hines, apart from point #6. I was unable to re-download Server.app from App Store, greyed-out button.
So I was very happy to have another mac to download a fresh copy of Server.app.
    Then:
-Deleted and thrashed the old version
    -Message "all services stopped"
    -Reboot
    -Copied fresh "Server.app" to /Applications
-Started "Server.app" that made some initial auto configuration
    -Services restarted
I just had to restart the postgres service and seems that I didn't lost any data/config (I hope, I'm already checking!)
    =begin RANT
I know that Apple is essentially an hardware manufacter manly for consumer target now but that a simple minor update broke an entire software meant to be solid, like a server must be, is just plain unacceptable.
I know that OSX Server is very cheap and we can't pretend too much....but F**K...i loosed my sleep tonight!

  • Why Oracle Linux 5 cannot recover disk space after delete files ?

    Folks,
Hello. When I create a Virtual Machine for Oracle Linux 5 to install EBS R12, I allocate 300GB to the VM. I download EBS R12 Source Files (45.7GB) and unzip the files (46GB). Total size of stage area directory(EBS_R12) is 91.7GB.
Because some files are corrupted and cannot install, I move the folder EBS_R12 into trash but cannot empty trash. I move EBS_R12 from trash back to the directory. Then at root user, use command "rm -rf " to delete EBS_R12 completely.
I shut down Oracle Linux 5 and restart it, 91.7GB disk space cannot recover.
I download some other files into Oracle Linux files and then delete those files, but disk space cannot be recovered either.
It seems that OEL5 virtual disk only can expand but cannot be reduced. The VM disk space is less than 200GB now and not enough to install EBS R12.
Can any folks tell me how to make 91.7GB disk space and some more disk space come up ?

    Folks,
Hello. Thanks a lot for replying.
Host OS is Windows 7, Guest OS is Oracle Linux 5 on the top of VMPlayer 3. The VM of Oracle Linux 5 is created on the external USB drive and not on the local hard disk.
There is a directory /tmp/VMwareDnd/376c7cae/EBS_R12 in Oracle Linux 5 file system. I copy/Paste the folder of EBS_R12 from Windows 7 into Oracle Linux 5. All of zip files and unzipped files are placed in the folder of EBS_R12.
After EBS_R12 is deleted, the external USB drive(F:) doesn't come up 91.7GB disk space.
    My question is:
Where to run "boot>linux rescue" command ?
Does this command work correctly in the external USB drive ?

  • HT4718 Are there alternate ways to boot in recovery mode?

The original problem: 2007 era Macbook Pro display goes bad.
Solution: We bought a new macbook pro.  It was time for an upgrade.
The opportunity: We decided to connect the old pro to an external display and use it in clamshell mode and set it up for the kids to use.
I attempted to delete my wife's user account, yet the machine still shows 88 gigs used when clearly the two new users I set up (one administrator) are not using so much. I thought if I could reinstall OSX that my problems would be solved.  Not only am I not worried about losing data in a reinstall - I want to.
The current problem: I cannot boot this mac into recovery mode while it is in Clamshell.
I am using a wireless apple keypoard, but can really only boot up using the restart option as the power button is closed up in the clamshelled laptop.  But when I do that it appears to me that the wireless keyboard is not connecting in time for the recovery mode to catch.
I thought the simple solution would be to open up the old beast and use the actual power button.  Good news is that when I do this, it must boot into recover mode.  Bad news is that evidently recovery mode does not allow mirroring of the display.  So I cannot actually see my recovery mode.  My external display is simply a secondary display - greyed out, and all I can do is wave the cursor back and forth.
So:  Are there any alternate ways to boot into recovery mode?

    Have you followed these instructions?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Edit; As far as the data you could either do a clean install, or use
OmniDisksweeper can help you find what's hogging your disk space.
Some of it is likely Local Snaphots from Time Machine

  • ZEN TOUCH 20GB - Stuck in Recovery Mode, during Firmware upgrade. HEL

    Ooooh dear.
Me and my Zen Touch are completely stuck. Decided to upgrade the Zen's Software and Firmware and am now in deep trouble. Here are the steps I took.
First I sensibly backed up the 2000 songs on the player to my computer. Then I updated the MediaSource software and restarted the computer. Then I decided to go for the big change and downloaded the new PlayForSure firmware installation and that's where the problem starts - It never completed the installation, which I had to manually stop. I knew as part of puting this new Firmware onto the player, the Zen would be wiped clean, which it has. However, I now cannot get it out of recovery mode and it will not respond to attempts to download the new (or any) Firmware onto it.
    What I now get is:
-Plug the Zen in, the computer recognises that there is plug and play equipment attached and makes the appropriate noise.
-The Zen will switch itself on as a response (or I can do it manually), with a normal-looking startup. It then briefly flashes a screen saying "Firmware Problem" before going into recovery mode.
-If I choose Clean Up, it takes a few seconds to clean the now empty disk, and returns to the recovery menu
-If I choose Format All, pretty much the same as Clean Up
-If I choose Reload Firmware, it warns me that the firmware will be erased. And asks if it should reload it via USB. You say 'yes' and it briefly flashes up "Start firmware update now" before returning to the recovery mode menu.
And finally, if I select Reboot, that's exactly what it does; the computer recognises that it's turned off, makes the noise, and recognises when it's turned on again.
Trying to download the Firmware from the computer, however, has turned into a nightmare. I've tried downloading the PlayForSure firmware and old Firmware from the files on my computer (running XP, by the way). And I've also tried prompting the Zen starting up the Media Source software, BUT they all claim that the player is NOT connected! Even though it is! The Zen switches on and Windows makes a sound every time I connect or disconnect it!
So what to do? I'm stuck in this vicious circle and no matter what random tricks I try, I can't get out. The player needs Firmware, but the software on the computer claims the player's not connected.
The player is now more than a year old, so I can't return it, and Creative's less-than-generous telephone support is not an option, so I'm left to any imaginati've and kind-hearted subscribers to this list to offer suggestions.
    HELP!
    Mark in the UK

My son?s Zen simply turned on one morning and refused to do anything except enter recovery mode, giving a firmware problem error and Creative Zen v0.0.58After an hours research I solved the problemI hope this helps someone out, but remember anything you do is your responsibility not mine, continue at your own judgment

Install driver, connect Zen, should show up in my computerAnd yes, when you open the Zen from there it WILL say not correctly connectedBecause the firmware is corrupted! But it is connected Go to the firmware file and double click, the firmware software will connect to the ZenAnd overwrite the firmware.
