Disk Nearly Full...Why? And How Do I Correct?
Hello all,
I tried burning a 25 minute iDVD last night and received a burning prep error. I found out yes, my memory is extremely low. I've been following different threads to try and fix but to be honest, some of the solutions are too high-tech for me and I just don't know what the heck some people are talking about.
I've done some basics like emptying the trash and running Disk Utilty. As far as I can tell I think I managed to make more space in Applications/System Memory. BUT! When I check space on the Macintosh HD it reads Capacity: 232.57GB and Available 1.77GB. From what I can tell from posts I should keep at least 10GB free. Now when I check Activity Monitor/Disk Usage it's almost a complete blue ball giving me the same figures.
Now I've gotta tell ya---I am so Mac green it isn't funny. I just started using things like iMovie and iDVD last month and I've had my computer a year now. I do have a few movies but not many (rough estimate: 5 movies total averaging 25 minutes each). It's still unclear to me how do I exactly find where the source is coming from that takes up so much room in Disk Usage?
I've read posts suggesting things like cleaning up System Logs and Temporary Files but as I mentioned before--the explanations were too advanced for me to understand how to do that.
Is there a way to determine exactly WHAT (if any one thing or things) is taking up so much room so I can target fixing it? I have read posts about upgrading memory and such but really, I cannot stress enough that I hardly use my computer and I can't imagine what is taking up so much room?
As I understand it there are different freeware and things out there I can download to try and fix---but first, I don't think I have the room to download any even if I wanted too (without adding more memory) and second---Isn't there a way to determine the source of so much disk usage in the first place as a starting point?

OK thanks for letting me know about the printers, every little bit helps.
I checked my file where I keep my movies and I had 6 things listed so these are what they were for size:
734.1 MB on disk
368.8 MB on disk
Zero KB on disk
2 MB on disk
1.08 GB on disk and finally
120 KB on disk....BUT
In Finder in the bar to the left under SEARCH FOR I happened to click on All Movies and there is a ton of stuff in there. The bottom reads 724 items to be exact. I wonder if this is where I'm going wrong??! Some things I recognize like a Camping Trip title. Others have names that I don't recognize that start out "clip-2010-01-12 11;42;56" or "Cache.mov". Does anyone know why this is happening? Because of camera compatibility issues I have been trying to import/export things, convert in Streamclip, editing etc. Just to get those 6 movies I listed above earlier ready so I can begin to burn. Let's just say I start and stop my cameras a lot before I import. Even though I don't recognize half of the names, any I double click on so far are parts of my movies. Hmmmm.
Now, because I don't have a backup yet I'm afraid to touch them. If I deleted what was here, would my Mac still keep the actual movies in tact that I have in other places (like my own created Movie file) or iMovie Events, etc.?
Is there a way to add up, (get Info) on all 724 files TOTAL without having to go crazy on a calculator?
And no, I have not downloaded the OmniDisk Sweeper YET. I left the computer after I posted in a forum hours ago and I came back now to check on this. I'm all for it if it can help me. But first, simply because I have no clue what I'm doing yet I just want to make sure I'm clear with things in my own head before I venture out more. (I'm still reeling from Streamclip ha-ha).

We'll assume for now, that all the songs and albums in your iTunes Library are correctly labelled (dangerous assumption, by the way!), and that a Compilation album is one with songs by different artists. Unfortunately, the music industry (bless their little cotton socks!) often mark an album by one artist, that has a collection of their songs from old albums, as a compilation! iTunes doesn't think it is!
The missing artists will be those who only appear on Compilation albums. For example, if you have one song by Fleetwood Mac in your Library, and it's on a multi-artist Compilation album, then Fleetwood Mac will not be listed in the Artists menu. But, if you then import a Fleetwood Mac album (or even a Fleetwood Mac single) into your Library, then not only will Fleetwood Mac appear under Artists, but the song by them in the Compilation album will also be listed.
One way to sort this out is to remove the Compilations option from the Main Menu and the Music Menu on your iPod. To do this, go to Settings/Main Menu/Compilations and press the Select (centre) button to turn off the tick. Then repeat this in the Settings/Music Menu/Compilations.
You should now find the missing artists listed in the Artists menu.
By the way, I now routinely check all albums I import from CD into my iTunes Library. Before I start the import procedure, I make sure that Compilation CD is turned on (highlight the album in the import window and right-click/Compilation CD) if it really is a multi-artist CD - and off if it's a single artist CD. Once imported, I manually change the album info to; (highlight album and select ) File/Get Info/Info/Album Artist has "Various Artists" in the box. Make sure it's the Album Artist box, not the Artist box. -
I'm referring, of course, to the search bar located next to the URL window; prior to upgrading to the newest FF, I had the capability of choosing from several standard engines and never experienced any problems but following the upgrade, there are no engines available to choose from and I have only been able to find versions of Google search other than the standard one in the available Add-ons I am shown when I go to 'add new search engine' (as there are no engines displayed) via the 'manage search engines' drop down option.
Furthermore, I have downloaded a search engine Add-on numerous times (most often, if not always, Informative Google Search) and it functions just fine, but upon FF restart, its back to having no default engines to choose from.
I have searched Google forever looking for an answer to why this is happening and had no luck with my specific problem, so I've come to where I figured the most savvy FF users dwell - hope you guys got some insight cause it's really pissing me off at this point, hahahaha.See:

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to print by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar may appear under the cursor. Click the printer icon.
Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and check the box marked
Allow Plug-ins
Then click
Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

Do as in Step 4 with this line:

Then I'd check the system drive, if it has problems.

Restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R), and keep holding them until the Apple icon appears, indicating that your Mac is starting up.
You will see a panel, where you can use Disk Utility to check your System Drive. -
I was using raw & my hard disk nearly full. When I downloaded pix, I got message that said hard disk nearly full. My pix downloaded into 2 folders. When I merged them about 50 disappeared. Where can I find them? Using MacBookPro, IPhoto 9.5.1
Where were you downloading the to, iPhoto, a folder on the Desktop, where? Are they still on the camera's memory card? If you deleted them from the card and haven't used the card since they can be recovered with recovery software like MediaRECOVER. You can download the demo version to verify they can be recovered before purchasing it. Other similar apps can be found at MacUpdate.com by searching for "photo recovery" or similar terms.

I want to send my itunes library from my old macbook (start up disk nearly full) to my new iMac. Then delete my itunes library from my old macbook. Is Homesharing my best choice for this?
What I don't want to happen is once I delete my itunes library from my old Macbook that the iMac itunes library to delete itself because I am using Homesharing. Does homesharing sync and make that happen?Here is some help.

After confirming that all your stuff is on the drive, delete the photos you have copied. You will need to empty the iPhototrash to free up the space. -

OK, I think you are trying to connect the printer wirelessly to your wireless router, right?
I think that is the way to go, so let's do that:
1. Restart the router by pulling its power cord momentarily. Let it restart.
2. On the front of the printer go to Setup > Wireless (or Netowrk, not sure) > Wireless Setup Wizard. Run the Wizard to connect your printer to your router.
3. After that, go to Control Panel > Devices & Printers and delete all instances of the printer.
4. Finally re-add the printer with these instructions:
1. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to your network. Verify that you can access the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address before continuing. Get its IP from a Network Test printed from the front panel of the printer.
2. Click >> Start >> Control panel >> Devices & Printers.
3. Click the Add a printer
4. Select Local printer
5. Select Create a new port and select Standard TCP/IP Port and click Next button.
6. Under Device type, select TCP/IP Device. Under Hostname or IP address, enter the printer's IP address. Click Next.
7. Select Hewlett-Packard from the list of manufacturers and select and select your printer model. Click Next.
If your printer model was not listed, then select Have Disk, browse the HP CD that came with your printer and select the first file that starts with hp and ends with inf. Click Open then OK. Select your printer model. Click Next.
8. If you are asked, use the currently installed driver.
9. It will ask for the Printer name -- enter a new name or use the existing one. This will be the name of the printer that you select from other applications.
10. You may be asked to share the printer. Choose NO.
11. The Print Test Page box appears. Go ahead and print it.
12. Click Finish.

Now I wanted to listen to it on my iPhone so I proceeded to transfer the purchase and looked for the book in the purchased section of the store in the iTunes on my iPhone but it did not show up.
Does anyone know why and how I can transfer the audio book purchased on my iPhone so I can listen while away from the desk?

Factory reset - the what, why, and how for Gingerbread
I wanted to share this information regarding a Factory Reset and how it is used for Gingerbread - both the what, why, and how - in case anyone is interested in the details. If you embark on this process, this thread is worth a close read. thanks to d.harris for writing this up for the SOAK group. good luck everyone and remember, YMMV.
First, what does a "factory reset" do? The short answer is: it will return your phone to the condition it was in when you first purchased it EXCEPT the Android version will match your phone's latest update. For example, I had Android 2.2.1 (Froyo) on my phone before the "soak". My phone was updated to Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread or "GB") during the "soak". I had some trouble with video performance in the Fox News app and missing album cover art in the Google Music app. So I decided to do the factory reset. After the reset was finished, my Droid X still had Android 2.3.3 on it but all of the settings had been restored to their factory defaults. And presumably, all Android operating system (OS) caches had been flushed. All of the data that was stored in my phone's memory was cleared. So my contacts were all gone. And I had to reactivate my phone (*228 1) just like a new phone and reenter my Google account info.
Does a factory reset actually clear the entire contents of the phone's memory and re-install Android from scratch? (That's what I wish it did.) But I'm not sure that it does that because the entire process seems to go too fast for that. However, a factory reset does seem to do a better job of cleaning out the remnants of the previous OS (Froyo 2.2.1) than a standard "update" does. But that's not all.
The factory reset also clears all of the apps that were installed in the phone's memory. And it clears all of the app data that was installed in the phone's memory. So you will have to reinstall all of your apps from the Android Market (or wherever they came from). Normally, you do not have to pay for them again because the Android Market remembers your previous purchases as long as you register your phone with the same Google account.
However, the Android Market does not remember the free apps that you installed---so you should make a list of all your apps before you reset your phone so you won't forget the free ones. The reason I wrote "installed in the phone's memory" above is because a factory reset gives you a choice whether or not to clear your phone's micro SD memory card. If desired, it will leave it alone. So any apps or data will still be present on your card after the reset. However, your phone will not be aware of the apps on the memory card because all "knowledge" of them will have been erased from your phone's internal memory---you'll still have to reinstall ALL of your apps. But the data files will still be there. Regarding the "built-in" apps that come pre-installed with Android, they will also be restored to their original state and version when you do a factory reset. So you'll need to update some of them (like updating Google Maps and updating Adobe Flash from 10.1 to 10.3).
Before you do a factory reset, you should have a fully charged battery becaues you do NOT want to run out of power in the middle of a reset---that could "brick" your phone. I always take an extra precaution: in addition to a fully charged battery, I also connect my phone to AC with the Motorola AC-to-USB charging adapter that came with it. Not only does it insure that I won't run out of power, it also keeps my battery fully charged so I have a 100% charge after the factory reset (you'll have a lot of work to do afterward to reinstall your apps and restore all of your Android and app settings back to your preferences).
Here's a pre reset checklist:
• Export your contacts to your SD card so you can easily restore them later (Contacts/Dialer menu > Import/Export > Export contacts to: SD card).
• Make a list of all of the apps that you installed (Android menu > Manage Apps > Downloaded tab).
• Get a copy of your Google account login info (user name and password).
• Get a copy of your Verizon Backup Assistant PIN (if you use this service).
• Turn off your phone and pull its battery. Wait 30 seconds or more and reinstall the battery and turn the phone back on. This will make sure that there is nothing hinky in your phone's volatile memory as the factory reset begins.
• Fully charge your phone's battery and plug the AC charging adapter into the phone.
Now you're ready to do the deed. Follow these steps:
1. If it's not already on, turn on Google's "back up my data" option with Android menu > Settings > Privacy > Back up my data. This is required for the next step.
2. Turn off the "automatic restore" option with Android menu > Settings > Privacy > Automatic restore. This will prevent your phone from trying to download every paid app that was previously on your phone all at once. It is much better---especially if you have a lot of apps---to install them one at a time. Plus, you may not want some of them to be reinstalled right away if you are trying to determine if one of them is causing trouble under GB 2.3.3.
3 If you do not want to use Google's "back up my data" service to restore your wi-fi passwords and such, then return to Step 1 and turn it off.
4. Begin the factory reset with Android menu > Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset. You'll be asked to confirm that you really want to do a factory reset and you'll be given the opportunity to clear your micro SD memory card as a part of the process. I chose not to clear my memory card because I have a 32 GB card with "tons" of music and other files that I do not want to have to restore (it would take hours).
When should you do a factory reset? Everyone should do it before they give their phone away, sell it, or discard it. You don't want someone else to have access to your personal data! And, a factory reset can be a helpful troubleshooting tool when faced with problems.
By the way, my factory reset did not help the video problem I was having with the Fox News app nor did it enable Google's Music app to find all of the album art on my micro SD card. Both problems persisted after the reset under GB 2.3.3.
Finally, there are other things you can do to flush old data from your phone such as clearing the cache partition of your phone's built-in memory. This requires the use of its "Android system recover" menu. Even though I expect this cache data to be cleared during a factory reset, I did it after my reset just to make sure. Clearing the cache partition is usually what folks try before a factory rest so they can (hopefully) avoid the factory reset. I'll leave it to a Motorola staff person to go into that.OK, got it ... the Power ON Factory reset procedures might have changed with GB ...
To get to a Factory reset using the Power up method:
1. Power Off phone
2. Press & Hold the HOME Button
3. Press and Hold the Power ON button.
You come up to the Triangle with the Exclamation mark & android guy.
Press BOTH the Up and Down Buttons at the same time. This brings up the Blue menu of options.
use the Up/Down arrows to scroll thru the choices. Press the POWER Button to Select the menu item you choose.
You can harmlessly test this and just choose to Reboot without doing anything, just to see how it works in case you ever need to do this in the future.
edit: It was concluded in the test group that they changed this process to align it with the new DX2 as the camera button isn't hard-wired like it is in the DX. So likely they just wanted to make this process the same for both platforms. At least it sounds like a good reason... -
I installed OX S Lion today but now my safari quits every time I open it. Any ideas why and how I can resolve?
Yes done that several times. Went online with with my service provider, O2. Spoke to a "Guru" sent me an E-Mail with the settings so I could put them in manually incase the reset did'nt work.

Recently, when I create a new album (untitled), it immediately fills it immediately fills with picture either from the album above it or, if I have a Faces collection open, with the pictures from that collection. Why and how do I fix it?
When a new album is created it will fill with whatever is in the right hand window, If you're in the Events or Photos mode it will contain all photos in the library. Yes, strange behavior.
