Disk not mounting in Target mode.  Other options?

I had a disastrous snow leopard upgrade that has thrashed my hard drive on my MBP. It is strange because my iMac upgraded with no issues and is a more 'complicated' system to upgrade.
I get an invalid node error message when verifying the disk. I cannot boot the OS from the hard drive anymore. Attempting to do an OS install gives me an error message that the contents of the disk cannot be changed.
When I launch the OS from the snow leopard CD, I am able to get to the file system via a Terminal window. There are a few files that I would like to salvage if possible before doing a reinstall of the OS. I tried setting the MBP to Target mode to access from the iMac, but the drive does not mount (only the DVD drive mounts).
Are there any other options? I can also get to these files in single user mode. I would like to physically get them copied somewhere outside of the system if possible (instead of moving them to a different location on the drive and doing an install).
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Andy Manson;
The invalid node error message indicates serious problems with the directory for that disk. This could be the reason that you are unable to boot.
You might try a demo copy of Data Rescue II to see what it salvage in the way of files from the disk.
Since AFAIK DiskWarrior is not ready for Snow Leopard yet that only leaves you a reformat of the drive to repair this problem.

  • LaCie 1TB Big Disk not mounting as a shared device

    Hi!
Today, I purchased a brand new AirPort Extreme 802.11n to replace my now dead NetGear WGR614. The set-up went well, but I have a query.
I also own a LaCie 1TB Big Disk connected to the AEBS via ethernet as a NAS Drive. The disk itself is set-up with Apple File Server and Bonjour Services enabled. With my NetGear WGR614, the hard drive would automatically appear in the Shared Devices column in Finder. The only way I have been able to achieve this same outcome is to log into the drive using Command-K and then adding it to the Login Items in the Accounts Preference Pane. This is so it will automatically appear connected in the Shared Devices column after a restart.
I have spent the morning searching many and varied forums for a solution, but almost all entries deal with USB connected drives.
If anyone has some information they would like to share, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Rodger.

    Solved on the MacTalk.com.au forums.

  • Are you ready : G4 MDD 1.25 DP FW400 will not go into Target Mode.

G4 MDD 1.25 DP FW400 will not go into Target Mode.....for migration assistant.
Shuts down every time I try either using "T" on startup or using the Boot Drive panel. G5 1.8DP I'm trying to migrate to shows up on the G4. Essentially, the FW400 ports are working in both directions as long as the G4 is not in target mode.
    Ran Diskwarrior on hard drive
    Reset PMU
    Reset PRAM and NVRAM
    AHT test passed
Moved hard drive from ATA100 to the ATA66
    No data cables plugged in

Hi! make sure the G4 drive is either jumpered as the master drive and on the end of the ribbon OR if it's jumpered cable select that it is in the master position on the end of the ribbon. FWTDM won't work with the drive in the slave position. Tom

  • Why won't my MacBook pro mount in target mode?

I have a mid 2007 MacBook running snow leoper and a mid 2010 MacBook Pro running Lion. I'm trying to move some large filles between the two and would like to use FireWire in target mode. They will both inter target mode, but neither will mount. The only odd thing is my Pro will not turn off once in target mode, I have to hold down the power button for a bit.... I'm using a 400 to 800 FireWire cable. And I've ran the disk utility on both, verify and permissions, both are fine. Any thoughts out there in the knowledgeable Mac land?!?
    Thanks
    Wes

So it looks like my FireWire port on my 2007 macbook doesn't work :-/ I hooked both macs to my External, and the external wouldn't show up on the 2007 threw fireWire, but it did using USB....
Is this a normal thing? do Firewire ports just give out over time, or could it be a software thing.... should I upgrade the 2007 to Lion? Will Lion even run smooth on the 2007? I'm kinda bummed about the port not working, but I ended up putting the large files on the Ex-HDD then transfering them to the 2007 via USB... wasn't the fastest, but it worked.....

  • Startup disk "Not mounted", needs to be repaired but can't get it to mount

I did a Verify Disk because my HD has been having issues. It told me I needed to backup and reformat, so I went ahead and backed everything up and went to DU in recovery mode.
But when I got there, my Macintosh HD showed up as "Mount Point: Not Mounted", so I did the following:
I clicked on the Macintosh HD from the list and clicked "Mount". It gives me the following:
    Mount failed
The disk "Macintosh HD" could not be mounted.
Try running First Aid on the disk and then try mounting.
So I click "Verify Disk" and it gives me this:
Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD"
This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
So I go to click Repair Disk but it's grey and cannot be selected, I assume because my drive is not mounted.
So how can I'm in a paradox and REALLY need help with getting my startup drive mounted again. Can anyone help?
Let me know if I can provide more info for troubleshooting and thank you in advance!

Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Firewire HD won't mount but Target Mode works

I am trying to backup and troubleshoot a client's PowerBook G3 (Bronze keyboard). Have tried to mount two external firewire drives, La Cie PocketDrive 60 gig, Porsche 110gig. It doesn't recognize either (with either port) but does work in target mode so the ports must be okay. Have made sure all cords are secure etc.
Can't remember the first thing about OS9.
    Help....
    Powerbook G3 (Bronze keyboard)
    OS9

    dazz,
Often resetting the PRAM will correct the missing FireWire ports. I would shut down, disconnect all peripherals, then reset the PRAM...wait for 3 startup chimes. Now connect the drive and see if it appears. If not, shut down the powerbook, remove the main battery and disconnect the power adapter for 5 minutes, then restore all power and start up. Now see if the drives appear. If not, shut down then cold start with the drive connected. If the drives are still missing, leave one connected, then open the Apple System Profiler under the Apple menu and see if the drive is present.
Troubleshooting peripherals is pretty much the same in 9.x and 10.x.

  • Time Capsule Disk not mounting

Since a couple of days, my 2 TB Time Capsule (1st generation, software version 7.6) disk (2 partitions) will not mount. Neither does it show up in the TimeCapsule preferences list. It has a wired ethernet connection with my MacMini and I use AirPort with my MBP and iMac. AirPort (sofware version 5.5.3) still works. I tried resetting, going through the fast-and-slow amber blinking lights, and the light on front is green again. What is the problem and do I get access to my data?

I'm curious: How did you manage to partition the internal disk of your Time Capsule?
The first 2TB Time Capsule was a 2nd generation model.
Neither does it show up in the TimeCapsule preferences list.
Please explain what you mean by "the Time Capsule preferences list".

  • USB3 disk not mounted after iMac sleep

I have a Samsung D3 USB3 external HDD connected to my late 2013 iMac 27". I have 'put hard disk to sleep when possible' unticked in power management preferences. After the iMac has been slept and then woken, sometimes the USB3 disk does not mount. When thsi happens, the device is not even visible in Disk utility and needs to be unplugged/replugged or powered off/on to be recognised again.
I have two of these same disks and both behave the same so it is not the individual unit that has a problem. Seems like either a firmware problem in the disk or some OS X bug.
Anyone any ideas on a solution or knwo of any way to force a USB device rescan from terminal.
    Thanks.

Certain WD drives are known not to respond to Energy Saver settings. See Western Digital “My Book” drives.

  • Time Machine backup disk not mounting after Snow Leopard upgrade

i recently upgraded from latest version of Leopard to Snow Leopard via retail disk 10.6.3 & then updated combo 10.6.5. Now the TM backup disc will not mount.

Exactly what happens? Do you get a message? If so, what?
Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If that doesn't help, the backups may be corrupted. Repair them, per #A5 in Troubleshooting.

  • Menu bar items disappear, and external hard disks not mounting

    Hi,
This problem started yesterday. I start up my Mac, and none of the menu bar items in the top-right of the screen show up. Then I noticed that none of my external hard disks had mounted.
Looking at the Activity Monitor, I saw that sustemuiserver was not running.
Reading around, I discovered that this usually follows a FrontRow hack (which I haven't installed). I tried deleting the ~/Library/preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file and logging out and back in again. Everything seems to work again, for a while. However, the same thing happened this morning.
Has anyone else experienced this, and anyone know a fix to stop it from happening?
    Thanks!
    Tom

I've been having the same problem for a while (I believe since 10.5.3). I have reinstalled OSX, installed OSX 10.5.6 combo hoping that it would fix it, but nothing yet. I have the problem only when I insert an expresscard into the slot and restart. It connects to a PCI expansion chassis. When I restart with the ExpressCard installed, all menu items dissappear and I can't eject volumes (hard drives) from the desktop. If I restart without the ExpressCard in, the menu bars seem to work properly. I tried with an older G4 running 10.4.11, with a CardBus card and the same chassis, and that worked fine... all menu bar items displayed and worked properly and I could eject disks.
I have also tried creating new users, but that didn't work either.

  • External Disk not mounting

I had problems (could no write a file to it) with a Seagate 3 TB ExFAT disk, connected by USB 3 to a Mac mini running Mountain Lion (10.8.5).
Disk Utility Verify told me to Repair and so I did, and it stopped in the middle of the Repair (I let it run overnight, having disabled all power saving ooptions in System Preferences).
After that, the disk does not mount.
    1. Any idea how I can mount the disk?
    2. Any idea what tool I can use to recover the contents of the disk?
    Thanks

Sorry, but I did not capture the output of Disk Utility when I ran it and now the disk looks "dead". Does not mount, does not show up in Disk Utility.
I plug the USB cable in, I can hear the disk whirring sound, but nothing happens afterwards. Only the internal disk shows up. The cable is good because I tried it with another disk.

  • IMac g5 will not mount in target disk mode

I am trying to recover data from an iMac G5 with a failing hard drive. The mac recently stopped booting and does not get past the grey startup screen before just turning off. There have been many other cases like this that I have looked at, but I still have not found a solution. I have started up from the install disk and can see that disk utility still regonizes the disk (althought it is marked as failing) but no options for repairing or verifying are available (greyed out). System Profiler on the non-target mac can see the drive (under firewire tab), but I don't know if I can mount it because Disk Utility can not see it. Is there anything I can do to extract the files? Thanks for any help you can offer.     Sheldon

If the HD has failed on the old computer then you can either recover from your backup, however I'm assuming from your post you were not backing up. If that is the case then you can purchase Data Rescue 3 (Google it) and see if it can recover some data or  you will need to take it to a data recovery service which will be extremely expensive.
As a general rule of thumb ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS have a solid backup plan! Beginning with Leopard 10.5.x there is no excuse to not at least be using Time Machine. If you are not familiar with TM then please watch the Time Machine Tutorial.

I have a 2.2GHz MBP that has recently experienced the dreaded graphic card failure. Before I send it away to be fixed I'd like to copy some files I need on to my old Mac Mini.
