I have the G4 tower with a dvd burner, and I recently
bought a floppy drive read/write. [t-max? external teac]
Files which were prior saved onto floppy get an error msg:
' disk not recognized by this computer ' 'format now? '
these were claris works files, saved via apple IIg onto
apple formatted 1.4 mb disks, which are now un readable.
suggestions ?
oh .. the unit IS working OK to save jpegs, claris 5 files now.. on my current system.....
but floppys previously [1990's] formatted are not readable.
Reader Gerrie E. Cooper has a stash of old floppies that contain fonts from Adobe, Agfa, and other companies. It’s bad enough that the fonts are stored on this prehistoric media, but said media is of the 800KB variety. He wonders what course to take.
I’m afraid that the answer is to find an old Mac (an SE on up to a beige Power Mac G3 will do the trick), insert the floppies into that Mac’s drive, create disk images of the floppies, and then copy the images to the current Mac. Third-party USB floppy drives support 1.4MB HD floppies but not double-density 800KB disks.

I have a FireWire LaCie external disk, that suddenly stopped working.
Did some copying of files and then I discovered some folder were missing.
Then I restarted and got the message "This disk is not recognized by this computer. I did choose Igonre and when I run Disk Utilty I get this message:
Verify and Repair disk “disk1s9”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Catalog file entry not found for extent
Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
What shall I do? I'm panicking, since there are life-important (almost) files on the disk.
I have Data Rescue II - do I dare to run the program, or shall I take the disk to a company??Bought the Data Rescue II, have restored most of the files. I think so, at lest. Many orphans, but at least they do have their names intact, and I have a pretty good idea where to put them. I only hope that the PSD files are intact too, all my video assets are on Beta and can be re-captured if needed.

It's the SECOND failure today - first I replaced an existing folder with an empty one and copied another 40 GB of files to the disk. Not much to rescue there...
And then this happens. Not having a good week so far. -
Movie dvd not recognized on this computer
I am getting this alert message, "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" when I insert a commercial movie DVD. Was working last week, why not now?
I finally searched google with the original error message and discovered other Apple community discussions... sure enough I had the Lexar Securell USB software installed recently...
I removed the Lexar extensions from /System/Library/Extensions, did a restart and all is fine again.
I discontinued use of the software a while back because nobody would allow me to load the software on their machines to allow decryption... guess that should have been a first warning something was amiss.
Does this software qualify as a virus seeing that it would have gotten passed along to other machines and left others not able to use their DVD drives, yikes!!!!!!!!! Bad, Bad Lexar, Bad!
Think this warrents a general net-wide alert!!

ITunes not recognized on this computer?
I have had all of my itunes downloaded from this computer and now it is telling me that I can't download a new song because this computer isn't recognized by itunes? Um, help please!!!!

Hard disk not readable by this computer
I have 2 identical WD2500JS HDD in my Mac Pro. Both worked fine for sometime, but now I'm greeted with an error message every time at boot up and the 2nd drive isn't usable/mountable/readable at all.
The drive appears in the Disk Utility as "Media" and Disk Warrior can also see the drive, but I'm unable to see any partitions, it's size, repair it, etc..
Disk Utility and Disk Warrior claim S.M.A.R.T is not supported on the drive, not sure if that matters (the other disk correctly supports it).
I'm not sure what I can do to recover the data on the disk or if the disk is permanently damaged.
Thanks for your help.Sorry to hear. TechTool Pro 5 does an excellent media scan job. And it should be a warning to make backups more often, and more sets, two or more.
TTPro also has pretty good SMART test suite (Intech Speedtools probably has the best), though SMART "ain't" that smart.
I replace drives every two years or so, use the older drives for backups.
First I'd pull them, put them in FW case for SATA drives, and give that a shot. And you'll need disks to recover to, to replace them (even if you repair or are able to zero out or 7-way write - OS X tools are not that hot for mapping out bad sectors).
Disk Jockey is $500 but does full sector copy (no computer needed). -
The disk ... was not repairable by this computer
I have a 16GB USB Flash drive that I decided to use to make Time Machine Backups. Since this implies having an HFS+ partition and since I wanted to be able to use it as a simple USB key to exchange files from a computer to another, I partitioned the drive.
I therefore have a FAT partition, which allows me to exchange files with PCs and an HFS+ partition for Time Machine.
When I connect the USB Key to a PC, only the FAT partition is seen.
On the Mac, both partitions are seen.
It worked for a couple of weeks, then I suddenly got a dreaded "The disk 'Time-Machine-Backups' was not repairable by this computer...."-message, the USB drive is then mounted in read-only and is indeed not repairable by Disk Utility. I only had this problem with the Time Machine partition.
There still is over 1GB free on the Time Machine partition so that I don't think the issue is related to a lack of spare room on the partition.
I ended up re-formatting the whole USB Flash drive and started over. Again, this worked for about a week and I now have the exact same problem, which leads me to think that it's not related to a random physical damage that could have occurred the first time (not a very plausible theory with a Flash drive anyway).
I've read about similar issues on other forums but even when solutions were provided, they didn't solve mine. I'm looking for a definitive solution / explaination, not just a way to get my data back and reformat the drive once again.
Any ideas anyone?I've formated the partition again and again, it worked for a couple of days, Time Machine worked, everything looked fine. I diconnected the Flash drive properly (ejecting all partitions before unplugging the device), went for a walk with the Flash drive in my purse, plugged the drive in, all partitions were recognized but the Time Machine was write protected, could not be repaired and only seems to be formattable again..

I have recently purchased Toshiba 1TB hard drive and I set it up and I was able to transfer all my files onto it such as my music, photos, documents. I had correctly ejected and used it again and all these files were safely stored and accessible afterwards. However after I rebooted my computer as it had been going slow and I had too much clogging it up once I reconnected the external hard drive I have error message saying 'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer' Three options are Initialize, Ignore or Eject. How do I access all my files? I set it up to work on both mac and windows. I have tried both another mac and windows computer and same issue occurs?? I am worried that all my personal files are gone but am confused as the drive has had absolutely no damage to it as it was in a very short time frame and its never left the same spot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Unable to read usb memory stick + "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"

Today I was tryign to use a brand new memory stick 8GB-Samsung PNY on my Mac Book Pro. (Mac OSX 10.7.5)
1. I do not see this drive in the Finder.
2. Diskutil could detect the drive.
3. I was trying to put ubuntu image file on the drive from the terminal uitility and I have this error message in a dialog box:
"the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
4. Clicking on initialize helps me realise that the drive is detected. But I do not have a clue on how to proceed from here. I am new to Mac and its file system formats.
The same issue happened with my 500GB external Western Digital Hard Drive. I was reading on forums that WD got some issues with Apple is trying to resolve. I expected to not have this road-block with another brand but it happened with my memory stick. Now I was forming an impression that something should be done to external storage devices inorder for me to use them Mac OSX.
Kindly enlighten me and help overcome this issue.

I erased the memory stick and formatted to "Mac OS Extended(Journaled)".
I attempted once again to use the "sudo dd" command from termial trying to copy the Ubuntu image file to the memory stick.
The operation termainates with the same message
"the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
The termainal message says some bytes got transffered in so many seconds. It looks like this operation is being terminated in the middle.
Have any suggestions and work arounds? -
My Macbook Pro 2010 with the latest OS does not open a particular Sandisk Cruzer 4.0GB (which is an old model, about 10 years) thumbdrive with the message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". Will I be able to read it on my macbook?
Is it readable in a Windows computer? If not then you can try Disk Utility to repair the drive-- although that may be dangerous too.
I haven't had this problem so I out of safe ideas. There are ustilies out there. I used the seach term "repair flash drive Mac OS X" to locate some of these.
If the data is essential there are pay-for services to recover data looked the price was in the range $50 - $1000

Hi,I'm new here and I think my problem were discussed few times before.However,I tried to follow the solutions similiar to my condition but it does not work.My problem is whenever I plugged in the HP printer (Laserjet M1132 MFP) usb to my Macbook Air,a screen will pop-out and read as 'the disk inserted is not readable by this computer'.I even bought my Mac to the Mac store but the situation remains the same.Okay with other printer but not with my HP.Sigh.The HP printer worked just fine with other computers (not Mac).I'm really sick of it.Please help me.I once plugged in an external hard drive & started Time Machine with it.The printer problem started after that.However, the hard drive plug-in works just fine.

I reset the System Management Controller on my MBA. To do so requires shutting it down, keeping it plugged in to power (I also unplugged both USB connections), and then from a powered off state I simultaneously pressed Shift + Ctl + Option + Power (I did this once and it did not work so I tried again and did it 3 times just to be safe), then released them at once, then I pressed the power button. Problem solved.

I also tried uninstalling the using the repair Disk Permissions with Disk Utility and moved the HP Printer software accessories to the trash (you can search the web for how to do that but that did not solve the problem either). Neither of these options worked. -
HP Laserjet P1102w by USB "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer"
My HP Laserjet P1102w used to work fine with OS X10.10. Then it started saying "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer" whenever I switched it on, but the printer still worked. This morning it didn't. I uninstalled the printer, but can't re-install it - it isn't listed when I click "+". I have tried a different USB cable, and a different USB port - same message. The HP website does not provide a downloadable driver, as far as I can see. What do I do? (The wireless connection to the printer stopped working ages ago. The printer still works with our two PCs via USB.)

Repairing the disk permissions can be done as following:
1. Open the the Applications folder.
2. Go to the Utilities folder.
3. Double-click on Disk Utility.
4. Select the hard drive containing the boot volume.
5. Go to the First Aid tab and select Repair Disk Permissions.
Note: This process may take several minutes depending on the Mac and amount of permissions that need to be repaired. The Progress Log will indicate when the process has been completed.
Next reboot your Mac and try plugging the USB again.
If the same persist, a such may also happen due to a conflict with the HP Smart Install feature which is Windows Based only and being wrongly read by the Mac, in order to resolve a such a Windows based PC will be required. any laptop should meet the purpose, the printer will be installed automatically by connecting the USB.
Next update and install the latest firmware below:

WD external Hard Drive comes up with "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
So here lies the problem, when connecting my WD external HD to my MBP, I get the message The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. and a further three options of initialize, ignore and eject. I have always hit ignore.
When checking my files, the HD is not available in my finder window.
I've gone into Disk Utilities. It is there to be highlighted. And I go to repair the disk, but each time the Repair button is greyed out.
I've tried to use my data recovery software (rescue pro deluxe) but because the drive isn't showing up in that program, it isn't working.
Are there any other options out there to get the files from that HD (I've just gotten back from 2 months of travel with a bunch of photos on that HD - so would like to get them back). When I plug in my external LaCie drive I get an error message "the disc you inserted was not readable by this computer."
The only options offered are "ignore" or "eject"
Disk Utility sees the disc but does not give a repair option.
What can I do?The good thing about mac-centric resellers such as OWC, is they have people on staff that can answer questions without you buying things first. They also have how-to information, and instructions are included in many of their products. I saw a link to watch a DIY video in one of their pages; an example of a RAID (with its own power supply) is shown on their drives page. Also a few in there, with no power supplies, for less money.

Some ideas on the RAID backup methods appear in google search, some of the pages are ideas and concepts; and the better ones also warn about using RAID for the only backup plan.
Oh, OWC has live chat. Haven't tried it, nor have I bought anything from them. I have what appears to be two products from them, but have not used either. One is in a box as-new, but has only USB2.0 ports & my Macs needed FW400/800. It has been said their RAM is a good way to upgrade, too. But I can't confirm!
A 'RAID-ready' unit for backup may be more versatile for just that, but I have not checked into these details. I use single HDDs in powered enclosures, and usually manually make backup clones to FW drives, of bootable OS X systems. Some of the OWC raid-ready use eSATA ports so that may not be viable for a computer without them.
The unused in-box external drive I have is like the base model in the link above. However mine is USB2.0 (maybe) and won't boot my older Macs due to hardware variance; and my preference would be for FireWire options, these models do offer that. But the one I have does not. Dual 500GB HDDs, and they could be used in tandem as a RAID. That would be a choice set up in software. I'm not sure and not interested enough to read up just now.
My backup method is not automatic, or a moving backup plan, if I don't get a move-on and make full system clones. I do make copies of photos and documents the manual way, to USB external drives; and occasionally backup to DVD or CD media. And USB flash, that helps to move files between computers without need to use file sharing via wi-fi. {Like Why fly? Walking is better exercise unless one is a bird. Squawk!}

Depending on the ports in your Mac, you may be able to use other cables to attach between a backup or externally enclosed hard disk drive with multiple partition and bootable clone in one of them. Not sure about the Thunderbolt, and where that is the main port, adapters are required to access other devices, as allowed.
Anyway, I am going on and on, yet not really saying anything.
My ideas would not be all that interesting to follow as a backup
plan when matching available newer hardware to task, but you
can get some into better ideas if you are not in a rush. Get a
good setup and then look into more an betterer stuff.

When insert my lexar USB flash drive I get the message that the disk was not readable by this computer. It has worked previous to this and I do not want to lose the data by reformatting the drive. How can I reformat this drive and not lose my data?
You can't reformat it and not wipe everything on it.
Have you tried a different USB port?
Only other option, back it up on a different computer. -
I am using a Seagate backup plus portable drive as my time machine backup on my iMac 7 with OSX 10.9.2 Mavericks. At startup I always get popup window stating "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer..? I click ignore and everything seems to be OK. Time machine seems to be backuping up to the seagate. I can open time machine and see the history of backups. Why does this message come up at startup of computer????
If you installed the Seagate software, remove it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
