Disk partitions with same drive letters in Win 2k3

Hi
We are hosted a 2003 standard server in Vmware.Recently we did an extend in the hard disk partition. We are using the storage as San.After extending the partition it got extended successfully. But when we open disk management it was showing as two partitions
with the same letter. In my computer only showing one drive. Please suggest how this happened and what it actually meant. We are using dynamic disk.
Partition Size in My computer : 1.4 TB as one single drive
Disk Management : 1.2 TB  & 200 GB ( Same drive letters with two drives)
We have recently extended the disk to 1.2 TB to 1.4 TB.
Thanks
Roo

Actually, this is normal for dynamic disks.
Dynamic disks, unlike basic, disks may have many (dynamic) partitions.
From the picture you posted it shows that:
Volume D: (1228.79GB) = Partition1 (1024.00GB) + Partition2(204.79GB).
For some reason, system was unable to extend Partition1, so it added Partition2 to the volume. This is perfectly normal.
You may read more about basic and dynamic disks at Technet library.

  • SCCM 2012 OSD with Multiple Drive letters using StandAlone Media

Hey guys I have a client who is required to partition their Windows 8.1 installation in three different partitions:
    C:(OS Partition)
    d:(SQLData Partition)
    E:(Client Data Partition)
    G:(CD-ROM)
I Already know that I should not use multiple drives for OSD but this is the requirement I have been given...
When I deploy my TS through PxE or USB Bootable Media all the drives are labeled correctly... C,D and E but if I Use Standalone USB Media then I end up with C, E and F and G as CDRom. I know that WinPE assigns a drive letter to the usb stick usually d: but
not always so how can I set the USB Standalone media to act the same way as PxE and Usb Boot Media? is there a way to have PE set the USB drive to drives latter in the alphabet? s, t or w?
    Please help

Hey Joyce thanks for the response but I am not talking about the fact that the drives are labeled differently in PE I am stating that once the imaging process is complete the drive letters are not the same when doing a deployment through PxE or USB Bootable
media... When using Full standalone USB media to deploy the exact same TS the drive letter assignment is not consistent so to be as clear as I can I will explain again...
When doing a deployment from PxE, USB BOOT Media or USB BOOT Media attached to a VM, all the drives end up correct at the end of the deployment so C: is the OS drive  D: is the Data Drive and E: is the Maps Drive (Keep in mind that if I do a usb
bootable media deployment and leave the USB in the computer I have the same issue as the standalone media)
But if I run the deployment from a STANDALONE USB Media then everything runs as it should but when I enter windows and look at my drive letter assignment the C: is the OS drive the D: drive is the USB the E: drive is the Data drive and G: is the Maps
    Drive...
Which means to me that when windows is assigning drive letters it is assigning the USB Drive as D and not something less intrusive like y: or o:
So the question is: How can I have the drive letters assigned properly when using full standalone media So that my deployments are consistent when deploying through PxE, Usb Boot Media and USB Standalone media? Did no one ever test this out? and if so is
this what I can expect from SCCM 2012R2 For consistency to not be available across all deployment methods?

  • Auto-detect & mount disk partitions and removable drives

I use ubuntu in addition to my current wip of installing arch linux. Now i have installed lxde desktop. But i am not able to see any of my partitions of my disk and other hdd. Besides removable drives also dont get mounted.
Similarly if a new partition is created the same also gets autodetected in ubuntu. eg my arch linux partition. I need not go to do any fiddling in the system to recognize the same.
So is it possible to achieve the same under archlinux? So want to know how to get  the same done.
what i want is to have the partitions[ext & ntfs] detected when the filemanager is opened and mount/unmount at my will, just as i do now in ubuntu.
So far what i have done is based on the lxde wiki, i installed the polkit-gnome gvfs package but nothing is mounted.
i would like to have specific instructions to how to work out and get the above  done.
    pls guide to the same.

What do you mean when you say that pcmanfm is not displaying *any* partitions? You see no files at all? Or do you mean: it is not showing partitions not listed in /etc/fstab?
I mean it is not showing partitions not listed in /etc/fstab. As of now pcmanfm shows only the arch systems partitions which I created while installation : root, and home. Balance of partitions of other systems of the same drive and second hard drive is not shown.
When you say that in Ubuntu, newly created partitions show up automatically, do you mean that if you change the partitioning on your internal drive, the changes are automatically reflected in /etc/fstab?
Yes the changes are automatically reflected in the filemanager of ubuntu, ie. Nautilius. However Ubuntu fstab as you see in the previous post of mine contains no entry to other partitions other than just ubuntus. In the fstab I posted above you can very well see it just shows 4 partitions of hdd1  [similar to the way the arch fstab shows only its own] where it is installed :boot, root, home, swap. Whereas there is two more partitions there viz windows and a ntfs. You don’t see them in fstab, but when you open the nautilius filemanager you can see the drives. See the image link of my filemanger posted below at the end. In that shared data and windows are two ntfs partition of hdd1 where ubuntu is installed. Arch is installed on 2nd hdd alongwith a Ubuntu.289gb partition is a ubuntu LVM along with arch root and arch home you can see.
If you mean that Ubuntu automatically adds, mounts and unmounts partitions on removable drives when e.g. a USB stick is inserted or when you change the partitioning on one and create a file system, that you can configure to work automatically in arch.
Yes ubuntu automatically adds, mounts and unmounts partitions on internal drives and also removable drives when e.g. a USB stick is inserted  . As you can see in the image i have posted, it shows all my internal drive partitions automatically. No fstab editing nothing. No fiddling with system files so far i have done in ubuntu. For eg i installed arch a month back, the same you can see is automatically seen in the image. All i required was to   update grub  to recognise árch'. Post that when you boot, automatically the new arch partitions are seen. No fstab fiddling anything. Thus tomorrow morning if i create a new partition on my hdd via ubuntu all i require is to reboot post the creation and i will see the new partition asap.
As you can see in the image all my partitions are seen, the one i want i click it and it gets mounted, if i dont want it stays/gets unmounted. And its not just ubuntu i saw the same in some other distros also like suse, centos, fedora.
As far as the lxde wiki is concerned, there it is mentioned to install polkit gnome gvfs for mounting and i did the same but nothing still happens.
So this is what exactly i am asking how to do the same on my arch system. So if i am guided i wil go ahead and work to achieve the same.

  • Excel 2013 bug printing when using two printers with same driver

    Hi,
Was advise by "Community" to post this one here.
    The environment:
    Window 7 Sp1 x64
    Office 2013 Sp1 32 bit
    Windows 2012 Server (current patches).
Two IDENTICAL network connected printers shared from above Windows 2012 server.
As the two printers are the same, they both use the same printer driver.
Printer A is set to Greyscale. This is the default printer.
Printer B is set to Full Colour.
Open Excel and start a blank worksheet.
Choose Print - this shows the default printer (Printer A) - then Printer Properties - this verifies that the Default Printer is set to Greyscale as expected.
Change printer within Excel to Printer B - then printer properties again - this shows us that printing is STILL in Greyscale ignoring the Printer B settings. Printing will indeed produce a greyscale print on Printer B.
The reverse is also true - if we set Printer B (Color) as the Default, then choose Printer A (Greyscale) inside Excel, it will then show (and print) in Full Color - ignoring the printer A setting of greyscale.
This ONLY occurs when connecting to Shared Printers on a Windows host (Server 2012 in this case).
Direct IP printing from Win 7 to the printer works as expected (printer settings honoured).
Non-Windows server based printer sharing works as expected (printer settings honoured).
This ONLY occurs in Excel. Other programs including other Office components do not exhibit this bizarre behaviour.
This ONLY occurs where the same driver is used by both printers.
In effect, Excel is transposing the Default printer's settings onto whatever printer is chosen if it uses the same driver.
Installing Office 2013 Service Pack 1 made no difference.
This appears to be a long running issue (search result show Excel 2007,2010* and Windows 2008R2 server references).
*Confirmed same behaviour with Windows XP and Excel 2010.
This appears to affect multiple brands of printer (Xerox, Konica Minolta). Confirmed with 3 different generation Konica Minolta (Postscript) copiers and Dell multifunction (with PCL drivers).
Does anyone have a solution for this ?
Is there a setting hidden in Excel that should be changed ?
Is there a server setting to "isolate" the two printers from each other ?
    Regards
    Ian

    KR,
Thanks for the reply but note I said "The reverse is also true - if we set Printer B (Color) as the Default, then choose Printer A (Greyscale) inside Excel, it will then show (and print) in Full Color - ignoring the printer A setting of greyscale."
Also, it is the printer properties that are being set. I believe the setting you refer to is per worksheet ?
    Cheers

  • S205 :Sad with Lenovo Driver support for Win 8

Sorry for my bad english, but I need to tell you my frustrating experience.
Due to low cost new windows 8 OS 64bit, I buy a lincense for mine Lenovo S205, conforted with some new Driver updated for 8 on Lenovo site.
I saw something strange in the Driver's page for ex. the wireless driver is called Cybertan\LiteOn and we have a Ralink RT 3090 wifi module.(or in some market Atheros AR9285)... Hummm realy strange.
I cross my fingers, I pray god and I start downloadin ALL the driver and start upgrading my system.
At restart I have my new Win8 64bit system and thank of god the most important driver (Ralink wifi) was autodetected and recognized by Win8  whitout install the strange Cybertan\LiteOn from Lenovo that doubt was working in a ralink device.
But at this point strarts the big issues with the unrecognized devices, that tahnks of god were less than expected but drivers fron Lenovo site were all wrong !!!!! Yes wrong, it seems a joke but was the true,
I think,(to tell the true I'm sure) no one from Lenovo tech checked the drivers in a S205 models, and I can explain why with the above sad experience:
    - SOUND: windows only install generic HD drivers and the sound quality as expected was crappy. So I try the lenovo driver Conexant but it does not properly work, SmatAudio icon in the ControlPannel was not present, no conexant pannel to manage sound, and nothing changed, windows continue with is own generym Microsoft HD drivers. I remeber that Lenovo model U300S and U300E have the same soundcard I dowload their Conexant Win8 driver (with a different number so I hope it was teh latest) and my idea was great, the Conexant U300 driver works on my S205 lenovo and Win8 detect the conexant soundcard and SmartAudio is present and working. There is only a isse concerning SRS Sound that is present on my system but if I try to lounch nothing appens, so I think is not correctly working. But so far so god sound is better than before with generic MS drivers, but to do so I have to choose a different driver from a different Lenovo pc, not an easy step for a normal user.
    - OSD: on screen display (FN+F keys) in 7 they was insert in the Lenovo Energy Mnagement, so to works you need to instal it. I make the same in win 8 with the new Lenovo Energy Management provides by Lenovo site, Lenovo Energy Management is working but OSD no !!!!
Windows 8 detect and show you in autonomy soud level and brightnes when you press FN+Arrow keys ant that are the most important but ALL the FN+F Keys are not showed on screen even if probably they are working (for ex. Fn+F6 correctly enabel1disable touchpad) but not icon showen on screen !! Well I can leave without OSD but once again seems Lenovo don't try EnergyManagement on a Win8 pc.
    - CARD READER: Windows detect and unknow device called USB CRW and I though correctly was the card reader, in fact I try a sd and win8 was not able to read it. So I install the Realtek CardReader downloaded from Lenovo site, It was extracted and installed but I don't know why the driver seems bugged, the pattern contains only some icon but not exe ord driver, in fact the Card reader even if I try the driver more times it was not decetced. I tryed the old Windows 7 driver for my S205 and thank of god it was working and now my cardreader is detected and working. Once angain the win8 driver provided by Lenovo fails and I need the oldest win 7 driver that maks the job.
    - TOUCHPAD: Synaptics touchpad was detected by windows 8 but all the basic features as the scrolling or 2 fingers was not working. So I try the Synaptics drivers provided by Lenovo and it was only for 32bit system even if is clearly showed as 32 and 64bit driver. The driver itself promp me that is not working on a 64bit system and i need to contact the producer :-(
Hahahaha very hilarious so I have to download the driver from Synaptics server that is so slow that I need 2 hours to finaly have my touchpad driver. Once again an epic fail from lenovo site.
CONCLUSION: Lenovo is the new n.1 pc producer in the world but it seems realy not professional when check his drivers and public it on the website. Could be s205 is the cheapest and not business line notebook but ... I am realy sad whit the way Lenovo put new drivers without any preventive control in the homesite driver's page.
It seems it was a lottery, extracting a number and put the corresponding driver on the S205 drivers page :-(
Sir this is not the good behaviour, is the bast way to loose users !!!! Very disappointed, very sad and I hope this post can help S205 users taht want use the new Windows 8 system to catch the correct solutions
I hope too some Lenovo developers can read this, try win8 on a s205 notebook and solve all the problems, because even if I solve with my 20 years pc experience all the issue, still remais some problems as SRS Sound seems not working (if It can work on our system, but if it can't why put in on our s205 driver too) and no OSD for every FN keys working.
There are not present some utility for win 8 as for example the CAPSLOCK keys utility that was present for 7 but not for 8 (I have to try if the older work on 8) or the Lenovo OneKey that seems not ready for 8..
So far so good winodws 8 works great on S205 and is a good choice if you catch the correct drivers as I explain here.
Hoping this help Lenovo not making the same mistakes in the future, and learn from their errors.
Once angain sorry for my language mistake but I'm not English
Hore this post can help in some case
    Bye

    Hi Romagnolo1973!
Thank you for posting all the things you learned, and how you got your S205 working with Windows 8! Hopefully this will help others.
To be fair to Lenovo, they list Windows 8 as not supported on the S205.
    http://download.lenovo.com/express/WIN8-INDEX.html
As you found, it is sometimes possible to work around the problems and get things working to your satisfaction!
    I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

  • Custom disk partition with diskpart problem

I am trying to customize the disk layout in my Windows 8.1 TS. What I did was add a command line TS with diskpart and disable the default Format and Partition Disk task. I know the diskpart (with script) command worked as expect as I tested it in my testing
box first. When I boot up the lite touch media and select the windows 8.1 TS, MDT failed at the inject driver stage (with using the customized diskpart script). But it is working fine if I use the default format and partition disk task. Can someone advice how
    I can troubleshoot this problem?
    Thanks

I found my own solution by modifying the ztidispark.wsf file.

  • AEBS Shared Disk structure with multiple drives?

I recently added a second HD to my AEBS 802.11n. I was sharing the first disk on my network with "User Accounts". This created a /Users/<user-share> structure on the shared disk so that each user had their own private share point. With the new disk, however, the AEBS creates a folder called /Shared on the second disk and ALL accounts use that directory as a share point on the new drive, i.e. all files from UserA are accessible by UserB. I've tried PUTING the /Users/<user-share> structure on the second drive (by connecting it to my mac, creating the directories, and reconnecting it to the AEBS), but the AEBS still uses the /Shared directory.
Any ideas? Any further comments on how the AEBS handles shares with multiple accounts and multiple disks?
Apple's documentation is VERY poor on this topic, it is a bit disappointing.

  • How to merge my disk partition with the free space

Hello! I have a macbook pro mid 2010 with Mavericks, I had 2 partitions and deleted one with the disk utility.
Now I want to expand the one that I have left but I can't, I cannot drag the corner of the partition because it is below of the free space.
I will post a picture so you can understand better.  Also I tried using iPartitions but it won't let me make any changes. Thank you
I don't know if anyone can see the picture so i'm leaving a url:  https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/505x387q90/745/WaiZID.png

You need to create a partition in the free space, clone the content of Macintosh HD 2 to it, restart from the newly-created partition, and delete the one currently listed as Macintosh HD 2.

  • New PC With New Drive Lettering

I got a new PC and moved the D: drive (that my song files were on) to my new PC. The only problem is that the new PC gave that D: drive a new name (F:) and now I can't get iTunes to see the song files in the Library view. I've pointed to the F: file location in the advanced iTunes tab but no help there. Any suggestions?

    hi Len!
hmmmmmm. this reference isn't precisely focussed on your issue, but it might be helpful:

  • How to completely erase ( no recovery partition remaining) a lion partition with disk utilities on lion install disk?

Where in a  lion install disc made from the installer can I find a bootable file with disk utilities?
I downloaded lion a few hours ago and installed.
I have 4 large hardrives (1.5TB) arranged in 8 partitions to allow me to work on a varied group of projects. I have some projects that need to be worked on with software running under Tiger, some with software that runs under leopard, some with snow leopard, and now Lion. I own multiple copies of software and multiple user pack system install discs.
On a regular basis, I back up chunks of work on projects to external discs, and special backup areas on one of my drives. I don't like using time machine because I am running many operating environments on my mac pro and I don't ever want to be tied to one operating environment for important functionality, and I want to maximize the open space on my hard drives.
Several partitions involve large video files. I am working on them in various versions of final cut, premiere and imovie. Because I have to use the same software versions my different clients are running, I don't want to move all the files " up" to a modern version. It would be professional suicide to stop accommodating my various clients. I say this to try to head off being told to make my clients upgrade. There are too many different clients and they are not going to replace all their equipment.
On these volumes with video files, I often fill them up and copy off what I need to backup before I erase and do a clean install.  I also run VM Fusion and windows XP. I absolutely do not want to have a Recovery HD partition left on the drive when I erase or influencing the other partions using different OS versions on that same drive.
Is there a bootable disc on the installer disk I just made? Can I use the disk utilities to do a low level erase on the lion volume that will remove the recovery partition?
Can I go back to booting from Snow Leopard and erasing the Recovery partition with the drive partition that way? Will the Snow Leopard utility take out the Lion HD recovery partition?
I am used to erasing my drives and rebuilding my machine and I believe it is the right way to use my multiple drives in my workflow. Now that I've got this invisible recovery partition, can you help me remove it and create a bootable disc that includes disk utilities?

I assume the unix pdisk command will show you want is going on.
You may not have a big worry.  There have always been a lot of hidden partitions. Disk Utility under 10.4.11 reports this drive has three (my now report four )  partitions, when pdisk reports that there are 15.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
Press return when done typing sudo pdisk -l
    -l include a lower case L
The sudo command will ask for your administration password. No characters will appear when typing your password. Press return when done typing. sudo stands for super user do.  It's just like root. Be careful.

  • Can I partition an external drive without erasing data?

    Can I do this?
Or do I need to have partitioned the drive to begin with in order to not lose my data?
I need it to be a GUID partition map for booting...

I need it to be a GUID partition map for booting
That is a common misunderstanding. An Intel Mac will boot from a disk partitioned with the Apple Partition Map. What you can't do without GUID is use the Apple Installer (which is used for e.g. System Upgrades).

  • Mapping Drive Letters

I have OS X Server 10.4.8 running in a school with all Windows PCs. I'm trying to figure out how to get the PCs to authenticate to the OS X server and upon logging in, map several share points on the server to drive letters on the clients (PCs). I know WGM offers a place to map the home directory, but what about other share points and drive letters.
I'd like this to happen automatically like through a login script or something.

In the OS X Server's /etc directory, you will find a netlogon directory. It is the default location for login scripts if you are running a Windows domain.
The script for which you are looking will look something like this:
    net use Y: \\WINDOWSSERVERNAME\SHARENAME
This command will mount the Windows sharepoint on the Windows server you specify to the Y: drive on the client machine. Just save this command into a text file : /etc/netlogon/login.bat
If you have multiple shares to mount, just use the same format with different drive letters in the batch file. If you learn some Windows scripting, you can do fancier things, like clear out existing drive mappings before mounting the network drives.
There is a spot in Workgroup Manager to set the Windows login script for users at the individual level, if you want to mount different drives for different people.

  • System Crashed after Partitioning an External Drive

I tried to add a second partition to my external drive but now my system freezes whenever the drive attempts to mount.
Originally, my external drive had a single partition used for Time Machine backups. I used the partition tab in Disk Utility to add a new partition. I selected a size for the partition that was less than the space being taken up by time machine backups. After clicking apply, disk utility seemed to work for 10-20 minutes and then my system suddenly crashed. Everything freezes and the following message appears:
"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button".
If I try to restart, the system will crash as soon as the drive begins to mount. The only way I am able to get my system to restart, is to unplug my external drive. I have tried safe mode and I have tried opening disk utility before mounting the external drive but nothing seems to work. It still crashes the system.
I have other backups of this data so I'm not concerned with loosing anything. I just want to get back into disk utility with this drive so I can reformat. Does anyone know how I can bypass without getting the "restart" message so I can erase the disk and start from scratch?
Oh, I forgot to mention, this issue may have resulted from accidentally disconnecting the FW800 while the last backup was taking place. Irregardless, I think the drive is now corrupt and I want to start from scratch.
    HELP!

Thank you VK. Worked like a charm. I used the start-up disk and deleted the problematic partition within Disk Utility. Seemed to work fine after that, but I went ahead and reformatted the drive and started from scratch just to be safe.
    Thanks again for the help.
