Disk Permissions constantly need Repair

Hi,
I've just upgraded to 10.6.5 and noticed that each time I log in, my disk permissions need repair. I've updated everything, but still seem to have permissions problems. Any help would be appreciated. These are the errors.
Many thanks!

Yeah, that advice is all over the place. It certainly won't hurt. But the benefits of doing it are, IMO, greatly exaggerated.
Repairing permissions can be a useful task if you are having a problem that can be traced to incorrect permissions on an application, folder, or file that is installed with the Mac OS X installer. Because those are the only things (and only a subset of those at that) that repairing permissions fixes.
But somewhere along the line, people starting using Repair Permissions as some sort of magic pill that can fix any ailment. Computer slow? Repair permissions. Screen flickering? Repair permissions. E-mail message won't go on the trash? Repair permissions. That advice is handed out (ill-advisedly IMO) on a daily basis on these forums. And, of course, there are those who advocate repairing permissions both before and after any system update. IMO that advice too is based on urban legend. I never do it.
If you do repair permissions, and it finishes with "Permissions repair complete", then it's done and you don't need to worry. The "errors" it returns are not errors at all and nothing needs to be fixed. They're just "messages", not errors. If you don't want to see them, simply uncheck the "show details" box.
If Repair Permissions finishes with "permissions repair failed", or "the "underlying task reported failure on exit", then worry.

Yesterday I ran Disk Utility and came up with hundreds of permissions that needed repair.  I hit the "repair permissions" button and waited until it said they were repaired, but just for fun I hit the "verify permissions" button again, and they all came back!  I did this several more times and every time I would hit "verify permissions" I would get the same list.  What's up?  I've always suspected diagnostic programs, but this is Apple's own!

Ignore them. They aren't errors. You will keep seeing the same ones. As long as you get the message "Permissions repair complete," you're OK.

It runs in single user mode, where it runs more safely than other maintenance/cleaning programs because there is less chance of interference from the OS. After installing (you won't see it in the Applications Folder) hold CMD-S at startup. You will get a black screen with MS-DOS like text. Just follow the prompts: type in "applejack AUTO" and it will run through the following:
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
You can also run tasks selectively and for specific users by typing in "applejack." After running in "AUTO,"  you can go back and run it again as "applejack," steps 3 & 4 only, for your user.
The first reboot will take much longer than usual, as it rebuilds caches. It may take several restarts to see the benefits. Because of the deep cache cleaning in AUTO mode some applications may tell you they are being opened for the first time.

• I constantly need to repair permissions, hundreds need repairing weekly

Hi, this is not a new problem with my MacBook Pro, and I have recently encounter the same problem whilst trying to fix a friends MacBook Pro after she approached me with the same issue. I have had a mac in new form or another since 1994 so without being a certified Mac technician, I know my way around pretty well. I use my mac all day every day and am always on grand to help my friends with theirs so I'm totally baffled by this issue.
Each week I have to repair my permissions, in fact if I use it more that usual then it will be a disk utility fix in 2 or 3 days, the permissions that need to be fixd vary depending on what programmes I have been using, itunes comes up more than most.  After a few months of this I decided that the hard drive must bat fault so, having the old one still in warranty, brought a new one, backed it up and returned the old one to the store hoping to get a refund, they tested it and found no fault with the drive... So I reformatted it and cleaned it and have had no problems with it since it's in a hard case and used as an external.  Again after a few weeks I have the same permissions problem back again on the new drive... So I diced to update the operating system, now running 10.8.5, it's made no difference. I still have fix my permissions every couple of days as it get he dreaded rainbow wheel and my work flow becomes impossible. So my fiend came to me with her MacBook Pro, I much newer model than men and told me of the dreaded spinning wheel . I fixed her permissions and then again in  a few days time the spinning wheel was back. I changed her hard drive too and the problem persisted the same as my own.
Please can someone help me figure this out ... Why am I getting these constant permission issues
I have downloaded disk warrior and put both macs through the software,
Is anyone else having these problems...
Sorry for the long winded explanation. Thanks for taking the time to read it.

Hi. Yes I know of the ones I can safely ignore, but I'm talking about hundreds of permissions that need to be repaired every few days and the reason why I run disk utility is because my programmes won't run properly and every action is greeted by a minutes worth of rainbow wheel. That is when I rerun disk utility to find yet again a hundred or more permissions that have to be repaired and continue to have to be repaired.
Desperate for some help with this.
Thanks

• Mac Pro Slow Shutting down Disk Ut says needs repair

Hi hope someone can help,
My mac pro has been taking a long time to shut down recently and this morning when i booted up all i had was a black screen with my mouse pointer (really weird).
I used Disk Utility to "verify disk" and it said that repairs were necessary. Here's the log:

Disk Utility stopped verifying “Aygies Raid” because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit

I have a clone of my drive on an external drive so i booted from that i tried to repair permissions on mac pros drives but it said repairs weren't needed, Log:

Explanations:
Folder Depth: This number indicates how many folders are nested inside each other. If a disk contains only three
folders and Folder A is inside Folder B and Folder B is inside Folder C, then this disk has a maximum folder depth of
three. Folders nested too deeply can cause software compatibility problems.
Property List: This is a standard file format for storing data and is often used to store preferences. The names of
these files normally end with a .plist file extension. Corrupt property list files can cause system instability.
Resource Data: This is an older file format for storing data and was often used to store preferences. The names of
these files normally end with a .rsrc file extension. Corrupt resource data files can cause system instability.
System Symbolic Link Files: These are files used by the operating system that are similar to aliases. If these files are
damaged it may prevent startup or cause system instability.

Thank you

Two things off the top:
128MB are GUID partitions that are not user volumes.
There is also a 200MB EFI partition as well.
Drive Genius needs to get their program updated.
You need to work from an "emergency" boot drive to repair your boot drive, RAID or no. I hope you are and not from CD or DVDs.
Forget about Permissions. They are very minor. They only have to do with ownership and security and based on what is in
/Library/Receipts
Trying to verify? all you want to do is repair and rebuild.
If you ran DU and DW and did repair and rebuild and WROTE NEW DIRECTORY and the problem remains, erase and restore, or...
+I am useless with RAID and have no idea...+
Don't use it except to test, learn, experiment with. But not for system drive.
Above I asked, "are these a matched pair of drives" ie, same make, (looks like same size), vendor, model? they should be. Less chance of trouble if nothing else.
ON the boot volume, do a Get Info when you click on the drive, look for "Ignore Ownership on this Volume" and make sure it is NOT CHECKED. It can't be to repair permissions and be bootable.
The underlying cause of disk errors may be marginal or bad RAM. Test those FBDIMMs. Run Apple Hardware Test and Memtest (even Microsoft uses Memtest for Vista).
Drives rarely break. Systems do. Directory and btree catalogue and volume information blocks do.

• Why do permissions always need repair?

Whenever I go to disk utility and ask it to verify my computer's permissions, it always identifies a series of files where permissions need repair.  Why is this?

http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/durepairfns.html#Anchor-The-11481
Repair Disk Permissions often produces messages while it is running. These messages are generally of an informational nature and can usually be ignored. Some of these messages may be repeated every time Repair Disk Permissions is run as the receipt for the object in question is forcing the setting of specific permissions, even if no correction is required. Again, these can also be ignored. Only messages indicating the failure of the Repair Disk Permissions process, or the inability to correct permissions on a specific file or folder, should be of concern.

• Why is  my DiskUtility no longer finding any permissions which need repair?

In the past 4-6 weeks Disk Utility, both on my iMac and my MacBook always gives me a clean bill of health when I use it to verify/repair permissions.
In the past, I alwyas have had something which had to be repaired.
Bothers me that Disk Utility finds nothing. I install, uninstall lots of software and would expect permissions need tweaks after installing Security patches and such
IS it possible that a recent OS patch (security or other) has affected Disk Utility?
It just does not seem right that suddenly no permission needs repair.
Any one else finding that they , too, now always have clean bill of health with permissions, using Disk Utility?

I think some of the gurus to whom you refer need an education.
We all recommend repairing the hard drive and permissions before installing new software not because it's a requirement but because it's a precaution against poorly maintained systems. Doing so will help prevent problems for users who simply don't know what they are doing or never maintain their computer properly. Even toasters need to be cleaned once in a while, if you get my meaning.

• Repair permissions still needs repair

I have repaired permissions three times with a restart between each repair. Am I to asume they have been repaired or is there still 45 or so things still wrong?

If your permissions have been repaired, it will say at the bottom,"permissions have been repaired".  There will almost be some permissions that will ned repair, that does not mean there is a problem.  Using the same procedure>Go utilities>disk utilities>select your user disk (usually Mac HD), highlight that, then click verify disk, if there are errors there they will be displayed at the end. If repair disk is not grayed out click that, if it is you will need to use the install disk, and select repair disk.    ATB

In Panther some disk permissions will always appear to be repeatedly repaired, but this s a characteristic of Panther that was rectified in the later Tiger. This may be what you are experiencing, and if so it is nothing to worry about.

•I suggest you read through the article.
•Then, if you do not have an up-to-date backup, it will be a good idea to try to save as much as you can of your data.
•The article suggests using a third party utility. Disk Warrior and Tech Tool Pro are the best utilities for this job. You will need to get one of them and run it, by booting from the CD, or installing it on an external firewire drive or on a second Mac which you can then run in Firewire Target Disk Mode.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
Good luck.

• Unable to 'Verify Disk'...Needs Repair

Good morning.
I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro. About a month ago I installed Snow Leopard 10.6.3.
After the install I noticed things running a little more sluggishly than Leopard 10.5.8. I went to verify the disk and noticed some needed repairs. See this grab:

I have now been through this process three times and am wondering what is going on. Why does my disk keep experiencing these issues?
Any ideas? Do I have corrupted files somewhere, a bug, a virus or just plain bad luck?
Any thoughts welcomed.
Cheers,
BurntMonkey

If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility to repair it.
I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy.
It also has File System repair now and hard drive S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics.
Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand. It has repaired every little and big issue I have ever had with my three Macs.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install will also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
Good Luck! DALE

• HD constantly needs repair

If I were to run VERIFY DISK every day on my MacBook I would get the same results: files differ by one file and folders differ by one folder...requiring a REPAIR DISK. This is getting old...how can I determine which file is the culprit here?
I obviously don't run REPAIR DISK every day, but I've verified it may days in a row and it always needs it. It seems to hold for maybe 8-10 hours before something goes wrong with this one mystery file.

V.K....I know I have to repair from the OS disk...been in the computing business since 1983 Just thought there might be some trick to finding the offensive file, since there is always just one file and one directory. Every other Mac I've had has never given me this specific problem.
I'll try Disk Warrior, but won't hold my breath. If I end up having to reformat, I'll just move off my data, reinstall SL and updates, then all 97 app (yuck) as bringing back a clone just might bring back the problem. Remember, it's a "file" causing the problem...not a sector on the drive.
what is the exact error message? does it say that the number of files is different by one? then reformatting (not just erasing ) the drive and cloning the clone back will fix the problem and won't reintroduce any back. file system error of that sort generally means one of two things
1. an orphaned file that lost its place in the directory. running disk repair should fix that and the orphaned file will be placed in the lost+found folder at the top level of the drive.
2. a leaking inode that's pointing to a nonexistent file or folder. this again ought to be fixed by disk repair. but either way doing a file level cloning can't carry over problems like this to the clone. just don't do a block level cloning and you'll be fine.

• Disk permissions verfication not repairing all files

We Have Mac OS X Server 10.5.6 installed and we just ran Disk Utility to repair the permissions on the boot volume.
It repaired a lot of things on the first run, but not all. Below is the output of the second run:
+Verify permissions for “Leopard Server”+
+ Reading permissions database.+
+ Reading the permissions database can take several minutes.+
+ACL found but not expected on "private/var/db/openldap/openldap-data/DB_CONFIG.example".+

What can I do to fix these errors? Thanks!

Thanks for the reply's!
I did run 'Check permissions' first, after that I ran 'Fix permissions' two times.
The output I posted above was indeed the output of a 'Check' run. But this was just to see what wasn't fixed after the to 'Fix' runs.
To reboot the server with the installation CD sounded very logical (why didn't I think of that). I just tried it, and a lot of things were fixed. After that I ran the check again, this is the output:
*Output of 'Check Permissions' after a 'Fix permissions', (both from the 10.5 Server CD):*
+ACL found but not expected on "private/var/db/openldap/openldap-data/DB_CONFIG.example".+
+ACL found but not expected on "Network".+
+Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired.+

Still a lot of un-fixed things.... What can I do?

• Permissions always need repair

My model identifier is iMac12,2 and my OS version is 10.6.8
When I do a permissions repair, one minute later I can do another repair with the same permissions repaired. In other words, it doesn't seem as though the repair actually works. Is there anything I can do about this? Should I do another clean install of the OS?

No, and it is working. Any remaining messages are due to having the current software installed; repeated runs of repair permissions won't fix anything which the first run didn't and are a waste of time.
