Disk Permissions getting damaged too regularly for comfort

Software started behaving unpredictably on my Mac so I run a Repair Permissions. I used to only have to run this about once every 6 months but now I am paranoid so run it once a week and now there are a **** of a lot of permissions need repairing just for a weeks usage. I have noticed a lot of them are to do with Front Row (in Core Services) and iPhoto access.
I rarely use these apps and yet the permissions associated with them seem to get damaged far to easy. Is there a bigger problem here that I am not aware of? Here is an extract of only some of the permissions:

Any suggestions anyonE?

These reports generated by Repair Permissions are harmless. We are all getting these reports that end with lrw-r--r-- . after the recent updates to Front Row, etc. It was reported in another thread that the initial “l” in the lrw-r--r-- . refers to a symbolic link which was created by the update, but not resolved by the programmer(s). Search this forum for Repair Permissions and sort by date and you’ll see you are not the only one concerned with the messages.
The SUID warnings and ACL warnings (although you don’t appear to have any of the latter) are also harmless. Sometimes they appear on my computer after an update, but I haven’t seen them recently. Notice that none of the messages state there is an error, only a Warning for the SUID messages and no warning, error or problems with the “Permissions differ...” messages.
As stated in the link Thomas referred you to, Repair Permissions should be a troubleshooting tool, rather than a maintenance tool.

Trying to burn a project on to DVD (4.7g disc) but I keep getting a message that says "Compiled project is 2835.4 MB too large for currently selected disc media. Does anyone have any ideas on this? Isn't 2835.4 MB around 2.8G. I'm confused! Should'nt this fit. Any help would be appreciated

    Hi
To fit that lenght in a SL DVD you must use Compressor to encode your video and audio before importing in DVDSP. You can take the standard DVD High Quality 120 min preset and use the MPEG2 and AC3 (Dolby 2) settings, then use those files in DVDSP.
If you are currently using DVDSP as encoder, you'll get AIFF uncompressed audio what takes a lot of disc space and bitrate.
    Hope that helps !

  • Repair Disk Permissions getting busy with time

When my PowerBook was newer (8 months ago to 2 months ago), permissions repair rarely returned much in the info display window. Now it gives many lines of permission corrections. Often repeating the same ones. For example it often repairs many items in the Resource folder of the Apples DVD player. [ie. - We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./Applications/DVD Player.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/AboutBox.nib/objects.xib. New permissions are 33204]. Always the same permissions. It will display these same corrections upon immediately rerunning the repair from Disk Utility. When the PB was new, ran OSX 10.4.1. Now up to OSX 10.4.4
Most other repairs are Widgets. Many of which I have not used. Thus I have been deleting them.
Why should the content of the DVD player resource folder get constant permission repair attention?
    Harmz

You can safely ignore all of the "We are using special permissions...." messages. They are not errors.
There have been a lot more than with 10.4.0 but they don't mean there is a problem.
It looks bad, but it's not. There is an Apple KB article that explains it further (it needs to be updated to include the Widget, iDVD and any other lines that say "using special permisisons" but the idea is the same.

  • Adaware scan that is taking a little too long for comfort

I have a hidden file ri0nda.default in my documents and settings, that I think is from an addon I downloaded for firefox. I'm currently running an adaware scan on it, it's at 448000 objects scanned and I have a bad feeling that it might be a virus or something along those lines... Am I being paranoid or is this something I should immediately remove from my computer?

I haven't checked if the regexp classes are checking interrupts flags, but you can always try to call interrupt on the thread which is working.
That's the only thing which I can think of (except for invoking stop on the thread, and that's deprecated)

  • Repair Disk Permissions Boosts Speed

I had a problem similar to another thread on this forum regarding the spinning beach ball. I was seeing this happen mostly when connecting to the Internet on Safari, but did see it sometimes on iTunes, iPhoto, and even Mail. After I ran Disk Utility, and had it repair disk permissions, eventually the speed problems started to go away. No spinning beach ball.
Can anyone explain why repairing disk permissions is the be all, end all solution? Why would disk permissions get corrupted in the first place?

There are many situations where problematic permissions can result in poor system performance, producing the spinning beachball, application or system crashes, freezes, unexpected quitting etc.
If software were a simple, single, executable file, permissions might not be so critical, but in reality, each application is a collection of components, loaded and executed or opened and read at appropriate times as the software itself is running. You can see some of these components if you right-click on an application icon and select 'show package contents' from the contextual menu - you'll then see a number of folders and files which are part of the app itself. There are other files too - library files - which applications have to have access to and which are 'prebound' to the application to help it run efficiently.
Since each of these components are crucial to the application, it is inevitable that if any have the wrong permissions, it can affect the ability of the software to read/open/execute the file. In many cases you might not notice any difference, but in others, the spinning beachball or a software crash would be expected.
Repairing permissions causes MacOs to run through it's system-level files and ensure that ownership and access rights for each is set correctly, thus resolving these issues.
Permissions can get messed by a number of things - not least being that the same file may be shared between applications and permissions thus set correctly for one but not the other, by installation of software or an update etc which overwrites a file or alters permissions for it, by some utilities or applications which do not entirely conform to the appropriate programming guidelines and thus alter files or permissions in ways that MacOS doesn't recognize, or just by simple error!
There's an excellent article on the subject you may find interesting at http://www.macworld.com/2006/08/secrets/repairpermissions/index.php?pf=1

  • Changed HD disk permissions can't boot

I change disk permissions on the guest account for my hard drive. Now i can't boot my computer. anyone can't help me.
    i had solve from forum
    The solution:
Boot into single-user mode (boot while holding down CMD-S)
Follow the on-screen instructions to mount the file system as read-write (a fsck command followed by a mount command)
Type the following: "chmod o+r /" followed by "chmod o+x /"
Type "exit" to leave single user mode and complete the boot sequence.
But this did't work for me

Can you boot in Recovery Mode? Command R before the startup chime. Get on Disk Utility (bottom choice) and do a Repair Disk Permissions.
If it can't boot in Recovery either but the Mac is reasonably recent, try Command Option R to force an Internet-based Recovery Mode start. You'll need Internet connectivity and LOTS of patience.

  • SFP is getting damaged

    Hi All,
I have two catalyst 4500 model switch, connecting a trunk of fiber. At one end, there is '4510 with SFP (WS-X4516) module' and at another end there is '4510 with GBIC (GLC-SX-MM) module'. But the problem is, our SFP module is getting damaged on regular basis each after 5/6 months. Can anyone guide whether it's the compatibility issue or anything else? What change can prevent this damage?

    Hi,
Since your GLC-SX-MM is working at 850nm and your link is working, so i am assuming that 10Gb Optical transmistter on your WS-X4516 is Cisco X2-10GB-SR(as i dinot find any other 10G card working at 850nm).
Though both are short haul card but have different Transmit & receive levels, i think can be the problem.
    Like
    Cisco X2-10GB-SR
    Transmit power is -1.2**(Max) -7.3(Min)
    Receive -1.0(Max) -9.9(Min)
    Whereas GLC-SX-MM
Optical transmit 9.5 dBm (Min) -3 dBm (Max)
Receive -17 dBm (Min) 0 dBm (Max)
Though they power level are within limits like 10G is transmitting at -1.2dBm and Max for GLC-SX-MM receive is 0dBm will have atleast one patch chord which will have loss.
But sometimes Transmit levels can be more than the specified, so check the transmit level of your cards before connecting as you are connecting over 10-12meter dsitance.
Also there is warning with 10G card see the link below
"The launch power shall be the lesser of the class 1 safety limit or the maximum receive power."
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps5455/ps6574/product_data_sheet0900aecd801f92aa.html
Sometime back there was a message where we were trying to get an answer for the above statement. So check your Optical Power level before connecting.

  • Low Battery - Battery too low for Radio use - And Curve will not Charge - HELP!!!

Need help and lost without BB.  My BB displays Low Battery.  If I try and make a call I get Battery too low for Radio use.  I have tried to charge the BB but nothing happens and still cannot make call or charge unit.  Tried charging overnight with car charger and A/C adapter.  Tried removing battery for one minute and reinstalling.
    Any ideas????

Greetings, and welcome to the BlackBerry.com Support Forums.
When you are connected to the charger, do you see the lightning bold charging symbol displayed over or next to the battery indicator on the screen of the device? If so, then let it charge a while. A battery at less than 10% charge can take an hour or more to get just 10% higher, and then the charging will move faster.
If you are not seeing the charging indicator, then you could have a bad USB port.
If you connect it to your PC via the USB cable, does the BlackBerry appear to connect?

  • Yosemite fonts too small for middle aged eyes

I just updated my desktop to Yosemite and am wishing I hadn't - the designers clearly don't have a clue what happens to normal eyesight in middle age. I am NOT vision impaired - just a little bit short-sighted (-1.5) and a little bit long-sighted (+1) and a little bit astigmatic, with up-to-date glasses that correct my sight properly. I am nonetheless finding using this new OS on my new 1920x1080 (non-Apple) monitor, which worked perfectly with Mavericks, absolute torture - all the text in menus, settings screens etc is just much too small for comfort, at least in the chosen font. In some apps I can use Cmd-+ to increase the font size, but there seems to be nothing I can do about the font sizes in Finder, Preferences etc
I have read the threads about the reasons and ways to mitigate the problem, and have increased contrast and reduced transparency in the Accessibility settings, and am considering running the script to change the default font back to Lucida Grande. But my point is that I have perfectly normal eyesight (for someone of 53) and have never had any screen problems before, so I shouldn't need to be using the Accessibility settings. I know it is fashionable among designers to create lots of blank white space, but white space doesn't compensate for illegibility!
I can see from all the threads on this topic that I am not alone. So please Apple, sort this out - usability must come first - and not just for the under 30s!

Even iBooks on MBP Retina !?
I love the iBooks app and use it specifically because of the "Night" appearance option, which turns the page background all black and the font white (similar to inverting the display). Fortunately books' font sizes remain adjustable as big as I want, but - I can no longer see page information (current page number and number of pages left to read) at the bottom of each page.  The page information is barely visible (appears like small dark grey foggy font on a black background). This is very likely also the result of the Yosemite font fiasco.  Not an issue when reading books in "Night" appearance on the iPad, (they didn't break it yet yet in iOS).
"Digital Books without page numbering information"!
    A Huge design fiasco.

  • Still too long for dvd?

After preparing a project in iMovie I exported it to the desktop then dragged to iDVD. It was 123 minutes so after getting a "too big for single layer disc" message I trimmed 3+ min off of it (it's 1:59:51 now) Tried again and it's still telling me it's too big. How short does it have to be? So this time I tried exporting to iDVD. Now it's going through another hour long preparing project routine. (2nd question here) Why does it take so much longer to export to iDVD than exporting it to the desktop?

The finished project time as noted in the project pane is 1:59:53. Is this cutting it too close? I haven't used any Themes, menus or other graphics. I'm dragging the m4v file onto the main iDVD pane from the desktop and also tried exporting directly to iDVD from the Share menu. In both cases I get the message that it's too big for single layer DVD. I really don't want to break this into 2 discs but will if I need to; I just don't know how much shorter it needs to be.

I repair permissions using the Tiger disc upgrade.
Can anyone help me with this??

    > I repair permissions using the Tiger disc upgrade.
One thing to note...  When running Repair Disk Permissions, it is best to run it while started up normally, from your normal startup disk, not from a Mac OS X installation disc.  The only time you should run it while started up from an installation disc is if some problem is preventing you from starting up normally. OTOH, Repair Disk can only be used when starting up from a different disk (such as an installation disc).
So, I would start up normally, run Disk Utility, and use Repair Disk Permissions on your normal startup disk.
NOTE:  Repair Disk Permissions often gives alerts messages that can be ignored.  They are more "informational," not serious errors.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
You should still run it periodically.  When you run it, what needs to be repaired has been repaired; consider the rest of it an FYI.  I've never experience a problem, where a Repair Disk Permissions message actually caused a problem.  But, if you ever get an error while running Repair Disk (or Verify Disk), that is usually a serious problem.
