Disk permissions repair not working

I upgraded to leopard the day it came out and was very pleased with it. However, I am noticing that when I attempt to repair disk permissions in Disk Utility I get the following warnings:

I think I'm almost a charter member -- I resisted installing Leopard until the end of October but from then on it has been a long, strange trip, with an almost daily occurrence of some new bafflement. Even Apple seems baffled by some of Leopard's quirks, as evidenced by the increasing number of technical articles about Leopard that end in "This document will be updated as more information becomes available" & the ever increasing list of apps that don't play well with the OS, including many of Apple's.

  • Repair disk permissions does not work

Repair disk permissions does not work. Disk Uitliy fines many incorrect permissions (ACL found, but not expected) and says that it would repair it. However, when checked again, it finds the same permission errors.
I have tried Disk Utility as well as the command line "sudo diskutil repairPermissions /" (which probably does exactly the same as Disk Utility).
    Any hints?
    C.

Are you trying to Repair Permissions because you have file access problems in the System files, or just because you think you need to do it?
If the former, please explain what you are seeing. If the latter, stop wasting your time.
The things it doesn't repair are not repaired because there is nothing broken. The orginal Receipts files have the old settings, and subsequent updates have changed the permissions on those things to what they should be, now. It will report the differences it finds every time you run Repair Permissions because they will always be different and they should be the way they are.

  • DIsk verify/repair not working

My computer seemed a bit slow and slightly erratic so it seemed time for a rerun of disk utility. Disk repair ran so far, then exited leaving an error message: 'The underlying task reported failure on exit'. I tried verify, then repair permissions, both stated "No valid packages". So I then started up with install disk and Disk Utility ran repair successfully - but verify or repair from the CD still gave 'No valid packages' Can anyone tell me what this means and what I should do?
The machine still seems to start and run OK. My 60Mb disk has about 8.5 Mb free. Is this insufficient and has this affected anything.
Thanks for your potential contributions all you experts out there.

The machine still seems to start and run OK. My 60Mb disk has about 8.5 Mb free. Is this insufficient and has this affected anything.
I assume you mean GB, not MB. 8.5GB is kind of getting down there for Tiger and could have contributed to this, especially if the disk has been in use for a long time with large files and files may have become highly fragmented.
If Disk Utility won't repair a volume you have two options.
One is to copy off what files you can (bearing in mind that your directory has errors so it may not 100% know where all the bits and pieces are to all the files). Then erase the drive, reinstall the operating system, copy files back on.
Another is to buy a utility such as Diskwarrior and let it rebuild the directory. This will be a lot faster, but will, of course, cost about $100 for the software. Other software packages (TechToolPro, Drive Genius, etc.) may be able to do the same. DW is a one trick application but is probably the best at what it does.
Many say keep 15% of your drive free at all times for OSX to have room to run. With a 60GB HD that's only 9GB (which is why I don't like that "15%" recommendation since on a 2TB drive that would be 300GB which is ridiculously large). I check my virtual memory use in Activity Monitor and see that for my computer this is usually 6GB. I figure maybe 3x that is good for wiggle room and try to leave 18GB free at all times.

  • Permissions repair not working

    Hello out there,
My G3 ibook uses OSX 10.3.9. When I try to "repair permissions" with either disk utilities or from the installation disk utillity I get the message---Disk Utility stopped repairing permissions because......No valid packages (-9997)
Does anyone know what this means? Is it good, bad or irrelevant? What do I need to do to really "repair permissions?"
    Thanks in advance, Jim

    Hi there:
You could see if booting from the Installer disc and running that version
of Disk Utility could help fix this issue. Also, see if starting up in SafeBoot
could help. I often use the built-in Disk Utility to repair permissions after
booting up in SafeBoot, then restart normally.
If you have renamed a folder or moved it in the system, you can make
things unexpectedly happen. Or if something has been removed.
Some people use 'single-user' mode and keyboard to access those kinds
of features beneath the GUI; so that is a possibility should other access
to this issue go without positive results. I seldom access my Macs in the
single-user mode, so those details are a bit sketchy to me now.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Disk utility functions not working properly

Most functions on my disk utility are not working FOr example the burn button is dimmed and out of function I tried erasin the com.apple.diskutility.plst but nothing happen

Let me just post some general directions and see if you recognize them as the way you did them:
    1. Repair Disk Permissions
While booted from your internal HDD
Go to (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left column and First Aid in main column.
Click Repair Disk Permissions at bottom left.
    2. Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
+A problem with the restore function also accured ( i tried to restore my Macintosh HD to an external if anything wrong happens Un fortunatly the Hd has something wrong and DU cant fix it properly+
First tell me about the HDD to which you are trying to install.
    • Is it a firewire, firewire/USB, or USB HDD?
    • Does the HDD have anything on it currently?
    • Was the HDD formatted Mac OS Extended before you attempted installation?
    • What method did you use in trying to backup the internal HDD to the external? e.g. what software did you use? Were you using Disk Utility or another backup software?
You responses will help me give you specific directions in terms of how to go about accomplishing what you wish to do.
Please post back with information on the points noted above.
    Cheers

  • Disk Utility is not working for me.

I have had a nightmare trying to install a Boot Camp partition on my brand new 27" iMac with 3TB Fusion Drive and running 10.8.4.
When trying to use Boot Camp Assistant, it would start the partition, then not finish.  I quit BCA, tried repairing both the partition and the disk, that didn't help either.  So I went into Disk Utility to create a new partition with no file system on it, assuming I could just use Boot Camp Assistant to format it when the partition was created.  It would start, but not finish.  I tried Repairing the disk and the partition, neither helped.
So I booted with CMD+R, launched Disk Utility, and tried to create a 500GB empty partition.  It started and just never quit, so I CMD+Q, got out of it, went back to Disk Utility, I found that I now have a 1.22TB empty partition and a 1.78TB Mac Partition.  This is probably my own fault, I should have just let it run, but after 20 minutes, it wasn't moving.
I figured that would work okay, so I tried installing with BCA, but found it's looking for an HFS+ partition to resize and wouldn't work with an empty partition, so I figured I'd just format the empty partition as HFS+ and install with BCA.  Unfortunately, I can't get Disk Utility to format the partition.  I select the empty space, it puts a white block on it like normal titled Untitled 2, I select Mac OS Extended (Journaled), hit apply, something flashes very briefly over the "capacity" line, and then nothing happens.  Hit revert and it shows up with the Macintosh HD partition and the empty partition.  No matter what format I choose, nothing happens.  If I try to exit, it tells me that changes have not been saved.
I'm trying to just extend the Mac partition, but the resizing option is not available.  I can't drag it to cover the Free Space partition, I can't type in the Size to resize it by number, I can't do anything.  I've tried to repair the disk and the partition, nothing happens.  I can't reclaim the space no matter what I do.
At this point, all I want to do is recover the entire space of the hard drive for Mac OS.  I'll try again with Boot Camp Assistant after Apple works the kinks out.
    Any help would be appreciated.

The Boot Camp Assistant in 10.8.4 should be able to partition your 3TB+ drive so you can have Windows. If Disk Utility is not working then your disk is corrupt. Backup all your data using Time Machine. Erase the volume and restore from Time Machine backup. You can use the ‘OS X Recovery Disk Assistant’ (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433). Open Recovery Disk Assistant and follow the on screen instructions to create a Recovery HD on the external drive. When the Recovery Disk Assistant completes, the partition will not be visible in the Finder. To access the external Recovery HD, connect the drive, then restart the computer and hold the Option key. Select Recovery HD from the Startup Manager. You would need to re-install Mountain Lion up to 10.8.4.  Then ran Boot Camp Assistant and then install Windows.   Once you have confirmed that Windows is running then open up Migration Assistant (in the utilities folder) and migrate your Time Machine backup back on to the hard drive.

  • Time machine full backup after disk and disk permissions repair

my macbook would not boot so i inserted the snow leopard DVD and did a disk repair and disk permissions repair, after that it booted perfectly but when it went to do a backup it did a full backup of 149GB , i am unsure why it has done this and would like to know how to stop it as i am trying to save space on my time capsule.
    thank you in advance

I'm afraid you don't have much choice. You do have lot of space available, though.
    Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:must scan subdirs|new event db|
No pre-backup thinning needed: 165.92 GB requested (including padding), 507.60 GB available
The "deep traversal" means TM compared everything on your system to the backups, and estimates that about 138 GB is new/changed (it adds 20% for workspace on the TM disk - the "padding" in the message).
If there's about 138 GB on your system, see #D3 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for some common reasons for TM to do a new full backup.
If there's more, #D4 there has some common reasons for large backups.
If all you did was repair disk and permissions, neither should have resulted.
the reason i did a permission repair and disk repair while running from the install disk was because my laptop would not boot from the internal disk so i did both just to be safe.
That's fine; just do the Permissions Repair again, while running normally.

MY disk drive is not working. When I put the disk in the side of the computer, it does not "suck" it in.

After reading so many complaints about people's computers on these forums, it is indeed refreshing to have someone write that their computer does not suck.

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If the drive still doesn't work, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

  • DISK UTILITY "internal error" PERMISSIONS REPAIR NOT COMPLETING.

After downloading Software Updates, Disk Utility's Permissions Repair does not complete , says "internal error". Then must quit Disk Utility against computer's own advise that it may harm Hardrive?

From Apple's point of view, it's near impossible for them to test every possible update environments, so glitches like this are inevitable. This one seems to be quite widespread, so Apple could be accused of not testing enough. Apple may well release a new update to correct this problem.
At least, I suppose, they are good enough to provide these forums free of charge.
Before I perform any updates, I visit places like MacFixIt.com and MacInTouch.com to see if anyone has experienced any problems. There are plenty of people out there who are happy to go through the pain & frustration and to work out solutions for the benefit of the rest of us.
Did you fix your problem by the way?
