Disk Randomly Unmounts Itself

Dual 2.66GHz dual core Xeon
10.5.6 server
Once of the internal SATA HDs randomly unmounts itself, every one or two days. It's a bit of a pain as its the disc with all the user NHDs, so it's very disruptive.
It's only one partition on a disk that unmounts, the disk has another partition that doesn't unmount, so I think that makes it very unlikely to be a hardware issue.
I have absolutely no idea - would be very grateful for any clues!
thanks

Disks do fail.
My first suspicion here would be a disk error, and particularly a disk error located in an area of the disk "underneath" the partition that is dismounting. I'd expect that when the disk error is hit, the disk gets kicked out. (Disks are far better and more reliable than the giant disk drives I started out working with, but all disks can and do eventually fail.)
This might be a case that a block rewrite would fix. Disks can contend with isolated bad blocks; a rewrite can trigger the use of a spare block. This can involve rewriting the file with the block, or performing a disk erase, or a complete disk (or partition) reload from archive.
This assuming that this case is an isolated bad block.
Empirical studies show a roughly 6% failure rate per year; not the commonly-assumed bell curve of disk failures. Related studies have found measured MTBF figures appear to typically be somewhere around 3.4x and can be as much as 15x higher than the MTBF ratings, too. Older disk drives can fail at rates 30x higher than MTBF, too.
And measured latent hard errors (past what disk-level error correction could handle) were between 3 and 6 per terabyte, IIRC.
Put another way, how good is your RAID set (and -- same studies -- double disk failures in RAID sets are surprisingly common) and/or how current is your disk archive? RAID allows a way to retrieve data from a good block or from checksums when a bad block is encountered, of course. It doesn't and can't allow data to be read from a bad block, of course.
Regardless, I'd get an archive of the contents of the disk or the disk partition (using Disk Utility or otherwise), then would check the console logs for any interesting error messages around the time of the dismount, and would look to move to RAID and/or to a replacement disk.
I don't mean any of this to scare you. I do mean to scare you into having backups. And into taking steps to preserve and to recover this disk. And yes, even RAID fails.
Figures quoted here from my memory from reading Google and CMU studies. (And I could have a bit error in my own memory here, too.)

  • GRAID 3 (external hard) randomly unmounts

I have just purchased a GRAID 3 external HD and for large project, but am quite surprised at its random unmounts. Happens quite frequently actually. Tried all that crossed my mid, but no answer. Is it sort of a normal behavior or am I missing something. I connected it via Fire Wire 800. would esata adapter help? Any advice?
Also I searched the forums about it and came up with a problem people keep talking about, and it's about Time Machine. People keep complaining about TM destroying their external hard drives, here's the link - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1215979&tstart=30 , and considering the date of the topic I may have (being a new MAC user) missed some solution to the problem. I'm bringing this up only in reference to my own problem, could TM be the cause of the random unmounts, considering I used GRAID to be my TM disk? I have turned TM off for the time being, please advise whether the problem has been fixed.
Furthermore, people also complain about FireWire drivers being less then satisfactory to say the least, corrupting HD's as well, here are two links on the subject -
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5694554
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1220884&tstart=0
I'm bringing it up also in relation to my own problem. Is the problem a faulty FireWire connection, should I revert to eSata or USB to connect GRAID?
Noteworthy - after changing the Time Machine update drive selection to "none" the unmountings have stopped so far (about an hour or so, will confirm after further testing), but in Final Cut Pro the error " autosave scratch disk drive cannot be found " appears every five minutes, but when I go to the system settings the drive is there as if I have already selected it.
I would greatly appreciate your assistance.

Start with http://www.videomaker.com/article/14042/ and note that it's probably not worth the expense unless the machine has an eSATA port, which I don't see WRT Mac Pro specs.

  • WD Passport 1TB unmounts itself all the time

I get this once so often: "The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off."
I have done the following (to debug/fix) and it stills ejects itself.
    - Upgraded OSX to latest version
    - Upgraded WD Passport to the latest firmware
    - Installed WD Drive Utilities and set the physically sleeper to never
    - Unchecked "Put hard disks to sleep when possible"
    - Computer sleep set to "Never"
    - Checked health status OK when drive is connected (not really an issue since I know the disk works fine with PC/Windows)
    About my drive
    - External WD Passport 1TB USB 2.0/3.0 - uses USB as power supply
    - Worked like a charm for several months on my prior setup (PC/Windows)
    - NTFS drive
    About my system
    - Running iMac (late 2012) w/ latest OSX
    - Tuxera NTFS for read/write to my NTFS drive
    - Parallels (uses bootcamp partition) running on the side - usually writes data to the disk.
My disk could be up and running for 30 minutes to a couple of hours.
I cant just unplug and replug the disk whenever unmounted - I have to wait for at least 15 minutes or so.
This is really terrible - I'm a new Mac user and this is a deal breaker for me. I'm considering using my expensive iMac for Windows only - just to make my hardware work...

I've seen that post earlier but it didnt help me. I wish I had installed the WD APP. Unfortunely, I haven't. Don't know how to install it even.
The tools I've installed and tested for my WD drive got installed after the unmounting error began, so it can't be that causing the trouble.
Now my drive just got unmounted by itself again, so I'll have to wait half an hour to hook it up again - then I will look for a WD app on the drive itself - but I doubt I find any. (To install it, then maybe uninstall it...?).
Open for any suggestions... - except formatting my two day old iMac.

  • External USB hard drive unmounts itself.

    Hi all,
I have a 2.5" hard drive connected via USB to my MacBook that keeps unmounting itself. This happens under some (what seems to be) undetermined amount of time, the drive will all of a sudden unmount itself and disappear from the Finder, Disk Utility, et al.
Is there some fix, setting or work around for this? Very annoying. If not, is there a way to re-mount the hard drive without turning it off then on or reconnecting the USB cable?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Diego

I have had the same problem trying to use an USB disk as my Time Machine destination. The disk unmounts when the computer is left alone.
Inspecting the logs I discovered that the system requests the disk to unmount and that the backupd allows it. Since it only happens when I am not actively using the computer my guess is that it has to do with the computer trying to fall asleep or at least preserving it.
With time machine, this is a problem before you have made that first backup; subsequent backups are shorter and do not "time out". My solution was to keep the computer awake and, when I forgot that and the computer fell asleep, requesting a new (continuation of the) backup. Unattended about 7GB would be backed up. (There might be a solution if changing the power settings, but I didn't bother.)
Apple might consider not having the backupd allowing unmounts during a backup, or at least before one full backup has been completed.

  • Usb disk is unmounted automatically

    Hi,
I have attached a 2TB USB disk and set up rsync to make a 'backup' (I know, it is not a backup, merely a copy) to this backup-disk.
But: without any mention in the logs, the disk gets unmounted. I have rebooted the server yesterday evening at 23:00 and I made sure that disk was mounted. This morning at 9:00, the drive is not mounted anymore... Of course this can cause problems, because rsync is scheduled to run every day, and if I make a copy to a directory on the same disk, I'll be out of space very soon.
I have also noticed that when the drive has not been used for a while, that it takes some time for tab completion in bash to work when working on that drive - but I guess that is caused by te disk spinning down in between uses...
Is there something I'm overlooking in my setup or should I script away (in udev I suppose) and check if the drive is mounted before running the rsync?
Drive details: Samsung Story Station 2TB USB / 1 partition (ext4) / mounted by UUID in fstab:
    UUID=e3434573-ad6f-4c44-8168-391292ba5ec5 /media/backup ext4 defaults 0 0
The server is a brand spanking new install with up-to-date archlinux x86_64.
    Thx!

I've  never had problems with usb disks unmounting spontaneously, so I'm just guessing,  but could it be usb powermanagement?    laptop-mode-tools  does all kinds of powermanagement tuning, so if you have this installed disable it to see if that is the case. The spindown is caused harddisk powermanagement that you can set with  hdparm, but this shouldn't cause unmounting.  To determine if the problem is specific to  that particular usb harddisk, all usb harddisks, or all usb storage see if it happens with a usb pendrive as well, or a different usb harddisk.

  • I just purchased my Macbook Pro retina display OS X 10.7.4 in June 2012. Shortly after I began using it, it began randomly restarting itself while in use. Why and how do I fix this?

So as I said in the title, I purchased my new Macbook Pro retina display OS X 10.7.4 in June 2012 and recieved in early July. Shortly after I started using the laptop, it began randomly restarting itself. It does this about once a week while I am just using the laptop for normal internet browsing. I haven't downloaded any outside software that the system could be rejecting and it is fully charged. Any ideas on why this is happening or how to fix it?
Also this is a total random question, but there is a residue on my laptop that is faint but randomly shows up. I'm almost positive that it is nothing on my hands or where I place the laptop. I wasn't sure if it was something possibly coming from the side vents. Thanks for the help!

Exactly what Shootist007 states - take it in for service or replacement - could be a simple software issue or it could be a hardware issue...
Don't even bother messing with it.....Might screw up even more.....
Make sure your files are backed up in case they give you a replacement....
Good luck - hope you get it sorted out...

My 5S just started doing this on Thursday: every fraction of a second or so it oscillates between connecting and disconnecting with the charger (USB or wall, doesn't matter). Since it's still under the limited warrantee, I took it to the local Mac dealer (I live in a small town w/out an Apple store) and they shipped it off. I'm waiting now for the replacement--telephonless, too!
What concerns me is that many people seem to be having this issue.
You were right to be suspicious of the Apple store employees. Once they replicated the behavior that you experienced, they should have immediatly offered to exchange your phone. Anything else, in my opinion, is unacceptable. As long as your phone is still doing it, I'd go back, ask for the manager and tell them to exchange your phone.

  • G-raid Unmounts Itself

We are using G-raid drives for our projects. When it comes to the end of the day we shut down the systems using normal finder menu.
When we boot up next the g-raid can't be found - should we unmount before closing down?
Also we are using a Sony J30 connected through firewire and when we unplug this, the g-raid unmounts itself and we can't get it to reappear with out rebooting etc..
The J30 is connected through FW400 and the G-raid connected through FW400 - would it be better to connect the deck through the back of the G-raid drive, at the moment they are both connected direct to the PC. Also is there away of unmounting the J30 without just yanking the lead..
    Thanks in advance
    Cheers
    Rob

Well I am no nearer.. it doesn't make sense..
When I turn I unmount the G-raid properly be ejecting it stops the drive. If I then turn the drive off and on it doesn't remount itself and won't do until I reboot.. And it is doing this on two seperate drives... perhaps these are faulty drives but this is weird

  • USB drive started unmounting itself after OS X update

Has anyone a work around to get a USB hard drive to stop unmounting itself? The drive used to work flawlessly and only started behaving as though the cable were disconnected following an OS X update.

Don't know about the update as a possible cause, but WD externals have a reputation for being very flakey with Macs, or flakey period. You could try a PRAM reset: hold CMD-Option-P-R keys down together at the startup chime, keep holding down until you hear two more chimes, total three, then let go and it will finish booting.
Also, you might try re-applying the 10.5.8 Combo Update.

Since I've upgraded the IOS to 7.0.2 on my iPhone 5, my phone will randomly restart itself.  Is there a fix for this?

    Howdy there Tuna241,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your iPhone is restarting unexpectedly after the update to iOS 7.0.2.
I recommend the steps outlined in the article named:

Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • Firewire drives random unmount

I have 2 WD My Book external drives attached via Firewire to my 27" iMac, one is used for Time Machine backups the other is additional system storage
I had this config running under Snow Leopard on this system and my earlier 24" iMac with no issues.
Since upgrading the 27" iMac to Lion I am experiencing random unmounts of both Firewire drives with the result that  the Time Machine backups are failing and I have to physiclly reset the external drives to get them to sucessfully mount again.
Both WD drives have the latest firmware and OS X is up to date - any thoughts how to resolve this problem and keep the Firewire drives mounted at all times ??

No, never solved the problem, I still get the Firewire drives randomly unmounting and I have to power then down to get them to remount - this never happened with Snow Leopard ( or prior OS versions on my previous 24" iMac ), only started after the Lion upgrade.
