Disk read error while awakening from hibernation
T42 with Hitachi travelstar, Xp sp2. It takes a long time going into hibernation and then gives an disk read error when reatsrt from hibernation. It can then only restart the windows losing the previous working programs.
This looks like a disk problem but the laptop works just fine other than that. Is it a problem with large files?
Thanks in advance.
It sounds as though your hard drive has failed or is failing. If you can't get past the error and you want to try and recover the data and files that are recoverable, you'll need a boot CD such as BartPE or Knoppix that will allow you to access your hard drive and copy files before you try the recovery. Another option would be to go ahead and purchase a replacement hard drive and an external USB enclosure. Put the new drive in your system and recover it using the Toshiba disks and then put the old drive in the enclosure and plug it in to a USB port. At that point, you can copy everything that is recoverable from the old drive to the new one. For the new drive, you will need an ATA-5 compatible drive that is jumper selectable as 'Master'. A cable select only drive will not work. You could go to 120GB with no concern about compatibility and you could probably go up to 250GB but I'm not sure whether that system has 28-bit or 48-bit LBA. If it's 28-bit your limit is 137GB. I see 160 and 250GB drives advertised for the A25 series so I suspect you have 48-bit LBA. In any case you should be able to find a 120GB drive for around $60.

My current Configuration:
3 node cluster, using clustered shared storage and about 22 VM's. The Host servers are running 2012 Data Center while all guest are running 2012 Standard. The SAN is EqualLogic and we are using HIT Kit 4.5.
I have a CSV that is running out of space, so I created another CSV so that I could move some of the VM's to a new home. I tested this by creating a test VM, and moved it successfully 3 times. I then moved an actual
LIVE VM and while it seemed to move ok, it will now not start. The message is "a disk read error occurred Press ctrl+alt+del to restart". I moved the test VM and it failed as well.
I have read several things about this, but nothing seems to relate to my specific issue. I have verified that VSS is working and free of errors as well. From the Settings menu for the VM, if I select "Inspect" the drive,
the properties all look fine. It is a VHDX and both the current file size and maximum disk size seem correct.
The VM's were moved using the "move - virtual machine storage" option within Failover Cluster Manager.
Suggestions?
Thanks.Lets see if I can answer all of those and I appreciate the brain storming. This really needs to work, correctly.
1. The Storage is moving.
2. VM's and SAN are on same device.
3. No, my Clustered Shared Volume, CSV, is out of room, (more one that later)
4. No, I actually have 2 sans grouped together. However, I'm moving the VM', form one CSV to another CSV on the Same san. EqualLogic PS 6110 is the one I am trying to move VMS around on, and the other SAN not involved in any way except
for it is in a SAN group is an EqualLogic PS6010.
5. No error During move, it took about 5-10 minutes, no error messages. Note, I did a test and it worked GREAT 3 times. Now both a live VM, and the test VM are doing the same thing.
6. No, the machine is not to large. The test making was a 50 gig drive, just 2012 standard installed with updates. The live VM was a 75 gig VM that was my Trend Micro Server, or anti-virus host.
7. Expand the existing SCV? Yes I should be able to, but there is an issue there. The volume was expanded correctly, Equallogic sees the added space, Fail Over cluster manager sees the added space, however disk manager only
sort of does. When looking at disk manager, there are 2 areas that tell you a little bit about the drive. The top part and then the bottom part. The top part only shows 500G, the original size, while the bottom part
says that it is 1 TB in size. I call Dell's technical support and after they looked at it I was told by the technician that they had seen this a couple of times and the only way to fix it was to move all the VM's to another CSV and delete the troubled
CSV. I thought about adding more space to the troubled CSV, but its on a production server with about 12 VM's running on it and I did not want to take a chance. The Trend VM was running on CSV-1 and working fine.
I must admit that the test VM, was on CSV-2. I moved the Test VM from csv-2 to csv-3 back and forth several times with no errors. The Trend Server was on CSV-1 and was moved to CSV-3, however it failed. Again, I then moved
the test VM from CSV-2 to CSV-3 and it failed the same way. I could not test the "TEST - VM" on csv-1 due to csv-1 not having enough space.
8. I did disable the network from the VM to see if that mattered it did not.
9. I have not yet had a chance to connect the VHDX to a new VM, but I will do that in about an hour, hopefully. Once I am able to test that suggestion I will post the results as well.
Again, thanks for all the suggestions and comments, as I had rather have lots to look at and try. I hope I answered them well enough.

Error:
Suddenly today, about 9 hours ago, the laptop froze while surfing normally on the net.. After a reset - done as followed: holding power button till computer shuts down, and power on again - the computer wouldn't start windows again, and only gives the message:
A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.
And will repeat the message after booting up with HP logo, and not enter Windows, time and time again if you press C+A+D
I've tried recovery system, but that didn't work, and I'ved tried CHKDSK and it found and said it repaired some errors but it still happens.
I then ran the start-up-test and in the end I got Failure ID 90DX6C-56S5S1-9XL03f-60S403 on Hard Disk 1.
I tried to Google it, and no results.
No recent system updates or anything new installed in a few weeks.Hi,
It would look like the Hard Drive is failing/failed, but try running the following test from the bios menu as it can provide a more meaningful error code.
Shutdown the notebook. Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu. Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run a test on the Hard Drive. Post back with the details of any error messages.
Regards,
DP-K

"Disk read error occurred" cannot even load System Recovery
Hello,
yesterday I powered on my computer, and it was almost froze, with only the mouse moving and even the task manager not showing up when called.
I first tried to make it go in standby, as I thought it was some program which didnt start as planned. After I closed the screen , the screen went black, but the pc continued to run. I then pressed the power button, shutting the system the hard way.
After that, I powered back the pc, which now only showed "Disk read error occurred, press ctrl+alt+del to restart" and obviously this wasnt the solution. I tried resetting the BIOS, then running the diagnostics on f2: it ALWAYS passes the test the first time, then if i try to run the diagnostics again, it says "NOT INSTALLED". I tried running the system recovery on f11, but the same "disk read error" appears.
I-ve already confirmed the problem lies in the hard disk itself {hitachi 750gb}, having plugged it in another notebook with an hitachi hard disk and still showing the same problem, while the other hard disk booted just fine in my HP.
I tried with a win7 cd, both recovering and installing a new version, but they both kept frozen for about 1 hour and did nothing.
I then made a bootable USB with Trinity Recovery Kit and after a quick diagnostic, it said boot partition has "unclean" windows files and tried fixing the problem, without success. I-m now writing from a bootable USB linux distro, because i cannot find a bootable iso oh hitachi recovery program, what should I do?
Is it possible the hard disk failed so bad for an uncommon closure of the system? It looks to me like some data got corrupted.
Please help me, as I-m an academy student and I use the PC for almost everything.
Thank you.I-ve booted Boot Repair 64bit and tried repairing the boot section... i even checked the boot infos and printed an info file, can someone answer what the actual FOG is happening here?

error while shifting from one tab to other''''''
I've followed what I can of that error, and from what I'm reading, your hard disk is doomed. Some people report that they've been able to reinstall OSX on the same disk and use it for as long as a few months, but eventually the error returns.
Here's what I suggest:
Step 1: Backup everything you want to keep immediately!
Step 2: Buy new disk.
Step 3: Install new disk.
Step 4: Reinstall everything & restore.
I highly suggest backing up as soon as possible. -- On the first day of this error my MBP would no longer boot. Thankfully, I was able to save most of my stuff using the terminal window available in the installer.
Searching for that error code here & on google returns a fair number of hits so you can read what others have done as well. Some seem to be able to get a new drive from apple if it's still under warranty.
Good luck! -
Satellite Pro L300 - Disk Read Error
Hey, Lee here.
I'm currently having problems with my Satellite Pro L300,
Everytime I try and boot it up, it will come up with a 'Disk Read Error, Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to Reboot' this has been happening for a while, and i've tried using the Recovery Console with the 'FIXBOOT' command, but this isn't working, due to the fact that there is no OS installed. I've tried re-installing Windows Vista Ultimate, but it keeps giving me an error. Any help?To test the hard drive determine what brand of hard drive you have. You can check the Bios/Setup to find out or run SIW or Belarc Advisor. Go to that manufacturer's support site and download their Self Booting Diagnostic CD ISO image, create the CD using the Burn From Image option (see http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm for more information on doing this), then boot to it and run the most exhaustive tests available. If you have a Toshiba drive you will need to use the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test as Toshiba doesn't supply their own. http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time. -

Error While Importing from EIF file into AW
Hi All,
I am facing the following error while importing from EIF file into AW using AWM as well as from sql prompt.
java.sql.SQLException: ORA-36786: (IOSEC04) File POCAW/abc.eif does not exist or cannot be accessed.
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_AW", line 42
ORA-06512: at line 1
at oracle.olap.awm.eif.eifimport.ImportDialogActionThread.doExportOrImport(ImportDialogActionThread.java:172)
at oracle.olap.awm.eif.EifDialogActionThread.doAction(EifDialogActionThread.java:58)
at oracle.olap.awm.ui.dialog.ThreadedDialogActionThread.run(ThreadedDialogActionThread.java:49)
i have already created the directory pocaw.
i have done the following steps :
CREATE OR REPLACE DIRECTORY POCAW as 'D:\Olap_POC\export';
GRANT all ON DIRECTORY POCAW to PUBLIC;
execute dbms_aw.execute ('aw create ''POC_AW''');
execute dbms_aw.execute('cda pocaw');
execute dbms_aw.execute('dtb attach POC_AW rw');
execute dbms_aw.execute('import all from eif file ''/abc.eif'' dfns update ');
any idea or thought would be appreciable.
thanks n advance
anwarexecute dbms_aw.execute('import all from eif file''/abc.eif'' dfns update ');
Maybe one of the following file names could help
(have never tried it):
''abc.eif''
''POC_AW\abc.eif''Yes,
you don't need the slash. CDA is like setting a default directory. -

GT780 Disk Read Error, Boots fine after 15-45 minutes
Hi.
I've been having a problem with my laptop for the past few months now. When I start it up I end up getting a disk read error but after a short time it seems to boot up properly. I will have this problem for a couple days and then the problem disappears for about a month then reappears for couple days then disappears for the same amount time. I've sent it in once but the problem started again about 1 month after it was sent back. Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be?Quote from: Svet on 12-February-12, 15:24:07

Disk read error when installing new OS on S10-2
Hello all.
I`ve looked thru this forum and knowledge base, but couldn`t find an answer so I`m appealing to the Lenovo community.
I recently purchased a S10-2 netbook in Mexico. Unfortunetely it`s in Spanish and I need English.(I`m writing a computer book and I need screen captures in English.) I don`t have a phone to call tech support or an external CD drive. I`ve sucessfully setup a dual boot with Ubuntu via USB flash drive. First I tried installing from a XP disk image (XP Pro and XP Home) using Power Iso, but when it rebooted, I received a disk read error. Then I tried extracting the installation files to the D-drive, rebooting to a command prompt, and installing directly. After going thru the initial setup screens, it went thru the motions of copying the installation files to the system, but when it rebooted, once again I received a disk read error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Garryrun disk check before installing anything, you may have dead bad sectors on your hard disk.
if it's possible, remove your hard disk and install it under other computers. -
Disk read error, and Disk Utility won't open
Have a PowerMac G4 dual 800mhz, with two hard drives. Mac OS X 10.3.9 is installed on HD1. I use HD2 for miscellaneous files.
Using the Azureus bittorrent client, I'm getting "Error: Disk read error - Input/output error, read fails" in the Status column when trying to download something to HD2.
However, I'm able to upload files from HD2 for other users, and I'm also able to play video files that are stored on HD2 without problem.
The real issue is that when I went to see if I could fix anything by opening Disk Utility, it won't open. It goes into an immediate state of Not Responding. It won't listen to me when I tell it to Force Quit... I have to wait a long time, or restart the computer, to get it to stop showing up in the dock.
Any advice would be appreciated. To repair a startup volume you must do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

"disk read error" and "error loading operating system"
Hello,
I have a problem with my N100 0768 BSG with Windows XP system. When I turned it on there was a lenovo screen with a sign: "to interrupt normal startup press lenovo care button" as usual. But after that instead of Windows loading there was a sign: "disk read error". I rebooted it, run rescue and recovery and started recovery proces.
However after about 20 minutes of recovery process, I saw a blue screen with some error and I could only shut down the computer. When I turned it on again, there was lenovo screen and after that I saw: "error loading operating system". I rebooted it but now I can't even run "rescue and recovery".
I downloaded some diagnostic programme from lenovo site, burned it on dvd and run on my lenovo. When it was doing "Surface scan test" of my hard drive, there was an error: "Error : Found uncorrectable data error."
I thought about buying rescue and recovery cd from lenovo but I heard that they do not sell it in Poland.
Please help me.
Sorry for my English.
Solved!
Go to Solution. If you have a dual core processor and 2 GB of RAM you will have no problems running Windows 7. You can check the microsoft hardware compatibility site to find out for sure.
Why 32 bit over 64 bit?
Unless you are doing an application like Video rendering or using a Digital Audio Workstation you probably won't notice any performance difference. Most applications today aren't written to take advantage of a 64 bit OS. This will happen over time but for now - you just don't need it. The 32 bit OS will be more compatible with older peripherals like printers and other devices where the manufacturer may not have built a 64 bit driver. Also when you get the upgrade disk you will get both versions so you can start with the 32 bit and always upgrade to the 64 bit at a later time if you really need it. You can only address a little more than 3 GB of RAM in a 32 bit OS but that is usually overkill for most applications people use. A 64 bit OS will allow you to address more memory but you will not gain any performance increases unless the specific application you run is written as a 64 bit application.
I have also found certain older applications that don't work with the 64 bit OS. So it really depends on what peripherals you are using and what applications you tend to use. The safe bet is to go with the 32 bit version.
If you decide to use XP just burn a copy of the XP disk and then you will have one the next time you need to reload. The licensing has nothing to do with the media - it is all about the license you own. Your license key should be on the bottom of your laptop.
Hope this helps. -
HP Elitebook 8560w Won't Boot UP -- Disk Read Error Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart
Hello. I have an Elitebook 8560w, that won't boot up. The screen says "Disk Read Error Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart". The screen isn't all black...there are some random colored square pixels with a random flashing !, but it's mostly black.
I've run the diagnostics and the F4 Hard Disk Test has passed everytime I've run it. I can hear the hard drive running, so mechanically it's okay (not sure on the logic side).
The F3 Run-in Test fails under the Memory Test, it reads "Run-in test failed - Failed Memory Address 0x76B99000 Pattern expected - 0XFEFFFF Pattern Read - OxFFFFFF
I tried a new 4GB DDDR RAM (removed the old one), and it hasn't helped. I should add before I changed RAM, it failed memory test and said "Disk Not Found".
That made me think it was the hard drive, but the hard drive test has always passed.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm lost. I have a new drive and ram coming from HP, but hoping I can salvage info on HDD.
Also...the computer was set up with Windows 7 as new, but my company reimages everyone's computer and installs XP. So I'm not sure running the HP CD (assuming I can find it) would even help.Disk read failure and disk not found are classic signs of a hard drive failure. The memory failed the test, so it looks like this had two issues at once.
The good news is that the right parts are on their way. If you want to save your data, do not use the recovery disks for the system. They will wipe the hard drive if it is still functional for them.
With regards to retrieving your data, have you talked to the IT team yet? Most IT departments have a process for data retrieval on company equipment.
If they do not have a process setup to do that, then you could try getting a notebook hard drive external enclosure. They usually run fairly cheap for a basic enclosure and that is enough to connect the hard drive externally to a different computer using a USB cable to copy data from it. This would work provided they do not encrypt the hard drive. If they do encrypt it, contact the IT team for their process as encryption limits the methods that are available.

Disk read error whilst trying to install vista
Bios Techy help needed here.
I'm using a pentium e6300 dual core with a P35 neo-F. I've tried to load the drivers disk after attempting to set the bios. At each time after saving bios and attempt to load those drivers for vista and raid a message is diplayed "disk read error" appears. I have tried to load vista from the installation disk. This does load to a point but stops.
What the heck do I need to put in bios to get running. Loading the fail safe settings or optimised ones still doesn't get me anywhere.
Techy help seriously required. The problem is not the board, the problem is that you keep installing drivers you do not need (drivers that will trick Vista into believing that a controller exists, that is not there (ICH9R instead of ICH9). The board is perfectly fine. You yourself seem to be causing the disk error (trying to force Vista to use drivers that do not fit the hardware). I have been trying to tell you this from the beginning. Why don't you simply try to skip the driver integration part? Do you even know what you are doing? Even if the board would be able to support RAID (which it doesn't), the RAID Function would need to be enabled in BIOS first to make driver integration a necessary step. As this is impossible on your board (because it does not support RAID), RAID Drivers are simply not necessary. They will only cause (pointless) trouble.
Another explanation is a bad hard drive. Have you checked your hard drive with a diagnostic utility provided by the manufacturer? Maybe it is time to bin the hard drive (or the SATA cable, who knows). This does not look like a mainboard or BIOS Problem at all.
