Disk read error whilst trying to install vista

Bios Techy help needed here.
I'm using a pentium e6300 dual core with a P35 neo-F. I've tried to load the drivers disk after attempting to set the bios. At each time after saving bios and attempt to load those drivers for vista and raid a message is diplayed "disk read error" appears. I have tried to load vista from the installation disk. This does load to a point but stops.
What the heck do I need to put in bios to get running. Loading the fail safe settings or optimised ones still doesn't get me anywhere.
Techy help seriously required.

The problem is not the board, the problem is that you keep installing drivers you do not need (drivers that will trick Vista into believing that a controller exists, that is not there (ICH9R instead of ICH9).  The board is perfectly fine.  You yourself seem to be causing the disk error (trying to force Vista to use drivers that do not fit the hardware).  I have been trying to tell you this from the beginning.  Why don't you simply try to skip the driver integration part?  Do you even know what you are doing?  Even if the board would be able to support RAID (which it doesn't), the RAID Function would need to be enabled in BIOS first to make driver integration a necessary step.  As this is impossible on your board (because it does not support RAID), RAID Drivers are simply not necessary.  They will only cause (pointless) trouble.
Another explanation is a bad hard drive.  Have you checked your hard drive with a diagnostic utility provided by the manufacturer?  Maybe it is time to bin the hard drive (or the SATA cable, who knows). This does not look like a mainboard or BIOS Problem at all.

  • Disk Read Error Woes

Hello there! Ive been having some issues with my SSD boot drive as of lately :(
From time to time, I receive a Disk Read Error when trying to boot into my computer...sometimes it happens after the computer crashes after working and then will not boot due to the Disk Read Error! However, the only time the computer will boot and bypass
the error is when when I open my case and unplug and reseat my boot drive, only then is the problem resolved for a day or two (sometimes weeks!) before the computer runs into the error or crashes and then runs into the error, to which it is fixed by a reseat.
The sata connection on the SSD seems to be solid (no wobbling or loose parts) so would the issue be the cable itself?

Hello everyone! After looking at everyone's suggestions on how to deal with this issue, I have done the following....I have..
    1. Replaced both the SATA Power Cable AND SATA Data Cable leading to the SSD, as well as connecting the SSD to another SATA port on the motherboard
    2. Used Chkdsk (with the "/r" parameter, as well as doing a few read-only checks to find anything) and the tests come back negative for any issues
    3. Used Memtest +86 to check for RAM issues, to make sure that is not the issue
    4. Used a HDD diagnostic tool (HD Tune) to further check for more issues, and everything is clear...
After doing all of the above, the computer ran fine without any Disc Read Errors for about a week before coming back yesterday, and just like before, the issue would go away as soon as I unplugged and replugged both the SATA Power and Data Cables :(
After the latest Disc Read Error, I have
    1. Updated my Motherboard's BIOS
    2. Connected the SATA power cable to a different port on my Modular PSU
and unfortunately, there is no firmware update available on my SSD, which is a KINGSTON SNV425S264GB, which is part of the discontinued Kingston SSDNow series...
So, after doing the BIOS Update and modular PSU port switch, the SSD is running fine for about a few hours now....with all of this said, would the issue be solved with the BIOS Update, or would it be safe to say this SSD is on the way out? :(

  • Error Message whilst trying to install Quicktime

Can anybody help me with the following message which I keep getting whilst trying to install Quicktime via ITUNES :
    Could not open key HKEY_LOCALMACHIN\Software\Classes\QuicktimePlayerLib.QuicktimePlayerApp\CLSID
I know this has something to do with the admin settings on the pc but I've tried to change them but without any luck.
    Any help appreciated

"Error writing to file C:/Program Files/QuickTime/QTSystems/QuickTimeCheck.ocx. Verify that you have access to that directory."
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • Disk read error when installing new OS on S10-2

    Hello all.
I`ve looked thru this forum and knowledge base, but couldn`t find an answer so I`m appealing to the Lenovo community.
I recently purchased a S10-2 netbook in Mexico. Unfortunetely it`s in Spanish and I need English.(I`m writing a computer book and I need screen captures in English.) I don`t have a phone to call tech support or an external CD drive. I`ve sucessfully setup a dual boot with Ubuntu via USB flash drive.  First I tried installing from a XP disk image (XP Pro and XP Home) using Power Iso, but when it rebooted, I received a disk read error. Then I tried extracting the installation files to the D-drive, rebooting to a command prompt, and installing directly. After going thru the initial setup screens, it went thru the motions of copying the installation files to the system, but when it rebooted, once again I received a disk read error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Garry

run disk check before installing anything, you may have dead bad sectors on your hard disk.
if it's possible, remove your hard disk and install it under other computers.

  • Satellite L300 - Disk read error so I can't start Vista

    Please can you help?
Have a Toshiba Satellite L300. All i am getting is Disk Read Error occured, please press Ctrl Alt + Delete.
How can I get it to boot up again. I havent a clue what to do next just keep pressing Ctrl Alt + Delete and it says a Disk read error occurred.
I'm going round in circles in. Running Windows Vista Premium.

    Hi!
Can you access the advanced boot menu if you press F8 after you have started the notebook? Then you could start the Toshiba HDD recovery option (select repair my computer).
If you cant access the advanced boot menu you have to reinstall Windows Vista. Therefore you can use the Toshiba recovery disk if you boot from it.

  • SDD install and disk read error message

I recently bought an HP Envy 17T 3200 Notebook. I wanted to upgrade the primary drive to an SSD. I bought a Sandisk Extreme brand new. I installed this in the primary bay. I used the recovery disks to restore the computer as I have done in the past with other HP laptops I've owned.
It went through all five disks and seemed to recover fine. When the fifth disk was finished, I rebooted the computer after removing the disk and received an error message:
"A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".
Thinking I had a bad drive, I bought an Intel 520 Series SSD. I replaced the Sandisk with the new Intel drive. I repeated the process above. I installed everything and actually booted into Windows for the first time. I shut the computer down temporarily. A few moments later, I rebooted and again had:
"A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".
The odds of TWO SEPARATE SSDs being bad are remote. Something else is going on here. I ran diagnostics on the disks and they both passed with flying colors. For now, I have the original disk back in the primary bay and the computer is running fine.
Has this happened to anyone? Do I have corrupt recovery disk files? What can I do?

    Hello
I'm writing this response although its an old post, since a quick search on google told me that alot of people have similar issues to this.
I will post my solution to the problem, hoping that it will help people who have this issue.
Description of problem; Just as OP, i was upgrading my primary harddisk on my Envy 17 to an SSD, and when i put the disk in it would not accept it, stating "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart".
As the SATA cable was functioning fine with the old Harddisk, i ruled that out.
Next thing i tested was wether the system would accept the harddisk if i pre-installed windows on it, before connecting it, this did not resolve the problem either.
I also reset the BIOS, did nothing.
Fustrated over this problem i acted on a hunch and disassembled the whole computer, cleaned it thoroughly and replaced the thermal paste on the heat sinks for the GPU and CPU. I also replaced the Fan on the cooling system (a simple cleaning may do the trick as well) Turned on the laptop with my new SSD in and voila, it accepted the disk and proceeded to start up windows.
I have never encountered a computer that simply wouldnt read a disk due to overheating issues, But it fixed my problem, so i'm a happy camper
Note that disassembling a laptop is an advanced job, if you are not comfortable doing it by yourself you should not attempt to do so.
By the way. This may or may not fix the issue for you, as far as i can tell this error can be the symptom of alot of issues, but if you suspect that your laptop may be overheating, this might be the solution.

  • Equium U400-124 - disk read error

    Hi guys
I have (had?) a Toshiba Equium U400-124 laptop with Vista Home Premium 32 installed.
Last night it just crashed, so I rebooted, and a message came up with "a disk read error occured, press ctrl+alt+del to restart".
This reappeared when I did the above.
I received no disks/dvd's with the pc when i brought it, so created a "vista recovery disk" on my desktop pc and tried it.
It says "windows is loading files", goes through the "egg timer" windows part, but then just hangs on a black screen (the arrow cursor is visible and moveable).
I left it all night after trying it a multitude of times, but still black.
    Any clues?
I have read that I will need an original Vista disc to boot from?
    Regards

    Hi
Can you access the advanced boot menu pressing F8? If yes choose repair my computer. Some files will be loaded and then choose the Toshiba recovery function and follow the screen instructions. Windows will be reinstalled now with the factory settings.
If cant access the advanced boot menu you must reinstall Windows using a Microsoft disk because you didnt burn the Toshiba recovery disk as yet (you had to do this yourself).
But as Eldoarado said you need the SATA drivers. Otherwise you cant install Windows because your notebook is equipped with an SATA HDD.
First download the drivers on the Toshiba page as Eldoarado suggested and then create a new Vista installation disk with these drivers. Therefore you can use vLite:

  • Satellite Pro L300 - Disk Read Error

    Hey, Lee here.
I'm currently having problems with my Satellite Pro L300,
Everytime I try and boot it up, it will come up with a 'Disk Read Error, Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to Reboot' this has been happening for a while, and i've tried using the Recovery Console with the 'FIXBOOT' command, but this isn't working, due to the fact that there is no OS installed. I've tried re-installing Windows Vista Ultimate, but it keeps giving me an error. Any help?

To test the hard drive determine what brand of hard drive you have.  You can check the Bios/Setup to find out or run SIW or Belarc Advisor.  Go to that manufacturer's support site and download their Self Booting Diagnostic CD ISO image, create the CD using the Burn From Image option (see http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm for more information on doing this), then boot to it and run the most exhaustive tests available.  If you have a Toshiba drive you will need to use the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test as Toshiba doesn't supply their own. http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Trying to install vista 64 on a separate internal drive with boot camp

    running into a wall here,
I'm able to install vista x64 when I divide an internal OS X drive that works fine, but I want to load Vista on it's own entire internal disk (bay 4). Bays 1,2, and 3 I use for OS X they are all 1TB drives. When I go through the boot camp assistant and divide a disk 50/50 between OSX and Windows and then boot to the vista install disk, the vista setup screen shows a PARTITION as "disk x partition x BOOT CAMP" and it works to select that partition, format and load windows... No problem. However when you choose the option in Boot Camp to erase an entire extra disk (in my case bay 4) and create a single partition for Windows and then boot to the Vista install disk the disk that was erased of the mac formatting, it doesn't show up with "BOOT CAMP" in the name inside the Vista setup screen, nor will it let you install vista to it, even if you pick the right one and format it inside Vista setup.
I've tried removing all internal disks except the one I want to load vista on and booting directly to the vista set up disc, and formatting with windows command line diskpart inside setup too, unsuccessfully. It simply keeps giving me messages that windows cannot be installed on the volume... I changed it from a GPU type disc using the "clean" command in diskpart but it still won't work! Man!!!
How can I get vista loaded on a separate disk on my mac, boot camp or not? It seems silly that a disk must have an OS X partiton on it before windows will load on it... Is there a way to load Vista x64 on it's own dedicated internal disk? Gratitude for any real help, I'm positive I'm not the first guy to want to load vista on it's own disk LOL!

So I figured this out myself, there was some kind of glitch in boot camp, i bypassed it and formatted the disk with the os x disk utility as a fat 32. pulled all the other drives out, and booted to vista setup. it formatted the disk to NTFS and lets me install vista 64 yahhhooooooooooooo!!!!!

  • VM will not boot after moving using Failover Cluster Manager - "a disk read error occurred......"

    My current Configuration:
3 node cluster, using clustered shared storage and about 22 VM's.   The Host servers are running 2012 Data Center while all guest are running 2012 Standard.  The SAN is EqualLogic and we are using HIT Kit 4.5.
I have a CSV that is running out of space, so I created another CSV so that I could move some of the VM's to a new home.    I tested this by creating a test VM, and moved it successfully 3 times.     I then moved an actual
LIVE VM and while it seemed to move ok, it will now not start.   The message is "a disk read error occurred Press ctrl+alt+del to restart".     I moved the test VM and it failed as well.
I have read several things about this, but nothing seems to relate to my specific issue.   I have verified that VSS is working and free of errors as well.    From the Settings menu for the VM, if I select "Inspect" the drive,
the properties all look fine.    It is a VHDX and both the current file size and maximum disk size seem correct.
The VM's were moved using the "move - virtual machine storage" option within Failover Cluster Manager.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks.

Lets see if I can answer all of those and I appreciate the brain storming.   This really needs to work, correctly.
    1.  The Storage is moving.
    2.   VM's and SAN are on same device.
    3.  No, my  Clustered Shared Volume, CSV, is out of room, (more one that later)
    4.  No, I actually have 2 sans grouped together.   However, I'm moving the VM', form one CSV to another CSV on the Same san.  EqualLogic PS 6110 is the one I am trying to move VMS around on, and the other SAN not involved in any way except
for it is in a SAN group is an EqualLogic PS6010.
    5.  No error During move, it took about 5-10 minutes, no error messages.   Note, I did a test and it worked GREAT 3 times.   Now both a live VM, and the test VM are doing the same thing.
    6.  No, the machine is not to large.   The test making was a 50 gig drive, just 2012 standard installed with updates.   The live VM was a 75 gig VM that was my Trend Micro Server, or anti-virus host.
    7.  Expand the existing SCV?   Yes I should be able to, but there is an issue there.   The volume was expanded correctly, Equallogic sees the added space, Fail Over cluster manager sees the added space, however disk manager only
sort of does.    When looking at disk manager, there are 2 areas that tell you a little bit about the drive.   The top part and then the bottom part.   The top part only shows 500G, the original size, while the bottom part
says that it is 1 TB in size.   I call Dell's technical support and after they looked at it I was told by the technician that they had seen this a couple of times and the only way to fix it was to move all the VM's to another CSV and delete the troubled
CSV.   I thought about adding more space to the troubled CSV, but its on a production server with about 12 VM's running on it and I did not want to take a chance.   The Trend VM was running on CSV-1 and working fine.
I must admit that the test VM, was on CSV-2.    I moved the Test VM from csv-2 to csv-3 back and forth several times with no errors.   The Trend Server was on CSV-1 and was moved to CSV-3, however it failed.  Again, I then moved
the test VM from CSV-2 to CSV-3 and it failed the same way.   I could not test the "TEST - VM" on csv-1 due to csv-1 not having enough space.
    8.   I did disable the network from the VM to see if that mattered it did not.
    9.   I have not yet had a chance to connect the VHDX to a new VM, but I will do that in about an hour, hopefully.    Once I am able to test that suggestion I will post the results as well.
Again, thanks for all the suggestions and comments, as I had rather have lots to look at and try.   I hope I answered them well enough.
    Kenny

    Hi,
It would look like the Hard Drive is failing/failed, but try running the following test from the bios menu as it can provide a more meaningful error code.
Shutdown the notebook.  Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu.  Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run a test on the Hard Drive.  Post back with the details of any error messages.

  • "Disk read error occurred" cannot even load System Recovery

    Hello,
yesterday I powered on my computer, and it was almost froze, with only the mouse moving and even the task manager not showing up when called.
I first tried to make it go in standby, as I thought it was some program which didnt start as planned. After I closed the screen , the screen went black, but the pc continued to run. I then pressed the power button, shutting the system the hard way.
After that, I powered back the pc, which now only showed "Disk read error occurred, press ctrl+alt+del to restart" and obviously this wasnt the solution. I tried resetting the BIOS, then running the diagnostics on f2: it ALWAYS passes the test the first time, then if i try to run the diagnostics again, it says "NOT INSTALLED". I tried running the system recovery on f11, but the same "disk read error" appears.
I-ve already confirmed the problem lies in the hard disk itself {hitachi 750gb}, having plugged it in another notebook with an hitachi hard disk and still showing the same problem, while the other hard disk booted just fine in my HP.
I tried with a win7 cd, both recovering and installing a new version, but they both kept frozen for about 1 hour and did nothing.
I then made a bootable USB with Trinity Recovery Kit and after a quick diagnostic, it said boot partition has "unclean" windows files and tried fixing the problem, without success. I-m now writing from a bootable USB linux distro, because i cannot find a bootable iso oh hitachi recovery program, what should I do?
Is it possible the hard disk failed so bad for an uncommon closure of the system? It looks to me like some data got corrupted.
Please help me, as I-m an academy student and I use the PC for almost everything.
    Thank you.

I-ve booted Boot Repair 64bit and tried repairing the boot section... i even checked the boot infos and printed an info file, can someone answer what the actual FOG is happening here?

  • Yay...disk read error

I just started an entirely new PC, except for the hard drive (160 gb, maxtor), which still had my previous installment of windows XP.  On boot-up, I get the 'Post' splash screen, followed by like 10 sec's of a prompt if I want to set up RAID, and then I get ... 'disk read error, press cntrl+alt+del to reset.'  I rechecked all connections and another run-through with no success.
Then, I tried replacing the hard drive with an older one which had windows 98, where the system got the splash screen, the raid prompt, and then just sat at the windows 98 splash screen indefinitely.
Lastly, I put in the windows XP cd with the 160 gig hd and created a new partition on the c: drive.  After partitioning and prompting to reset, it again just gets to the 'disk read error, press cntrl+alt+del to reset' message.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

Hmm . dunno exactly. i think the best process is memory module.

what rating is your psu and whats are the amp specs
Try formatting a complete drive with full ntfs format. if you current drive has a previous partuion on it then that could be corrupting it.
we know the bios posts and we know ide works to an extent or your optical drive would fail
it seems that when loading os the resources may be taking more power if a drive is not getting power then it will also result in this error

  • Disk read error, and Disk Utility won't open

Have a PowerMac G4 dual 800mhz, with two hard drives. Mac OS X 10.3.9 is installed on HD1. I use HD2 for miscellaneous files.
Using the Azureus bittorrent client, I'm getting "Error: Disk read error - Input/output error, read fails" in the Status column when trying to download something to HD2.
However, I'm able to upload files from HD2 for other users, and I'm also able to play video files that are stored on HD2 without problem.
The real issue is that when I went to see if I could fix anything by opening Disk Utility, it won't open. It goes into an immediate state of Not Responding. It won't listen to me when I tell it to Force Quit... I have to wait a long time, or restart the computer, to get it to stop showing up in the dock.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

To repair a startup volume you must do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.

Hi all, I see around 27 broken Dcs in MSS. The import is successful but the CNS build space shows 27 broken DCs. Would it be an issue. Becuase one of the DC cats approval is a DC that I intend to modify. Appreciate any inputs. regards Sam

Hi. I am not able to see the contact names on all incoming and outgoing calls. Any guess? Any solutions. I am also using the paid program / application Advanced Call Manger. Does this have any solutions? Thanks. Arvinder. Solved! Go to Solution.
