Disk repair and permission repair and all that jazz ...
Sorry for the double post .... anyway,
This morning I followed all suggestions posted on this board,
and I did my first Disk Repair, twice, (from the DVD) and Permissions Repair from the boot drive. I shut down the system, then started it again five minutes later.
Then I downloaded Cocktail and MacJanitor, and ran permissions repair again. Then and ran both Cocktal and McJanitor applications.
I shut down my system for about five minutes,
started it up again, and nothing is broken still.
Things seem pretty much okay.
I thinkthe system boots up a little bit
quicker than before. But not much ...
The only wierd thing is that my Safari icon was missing form the Dock,
and also my Adobe PE icon on the dock is now a big question mark.
I'm not going to mess with it anymore for about a week. I don't want screw things up.
Thanks to everybody on this board who helped me figure all this out.
Now to my last question, for now anyway:
Do you all think it's a good idea to do the same things to my
G-Raid external firewire drive?
Thanks again.
I did that. thanks.
Do you recommend I do a disk repair on my
external G-Raid firewire drive? It is a
Mac OS Extended format ..
There are no applications in it,
only large video files.
thanks

This is a friends computer and I do not have access to apple codes, or how this system works. -
For some unknown reason my application "Remote" no longer works. I deleted it from my phone. Signed out of Itunes and back in. Turned back on home sharing and all that jazz but it says it cannot find my itunes library. Is anyone else having this problem and if so how did you fix it? Thx.
Hello Philly,
I believe that when you reset your ipod(command given from the computer, right?) touch WHILE the ipod was updating, It cleared the system in the middle of writing files, thus corrupting(equivalent of cutting of in the middle of a sentence) the basic running system.
I suggest you go to an apple store and ask for a technical diagonosis in person. they may offer to help if the problem is fixable. If your ipod is still under warrenty, i would guess it would be free/low cost.

ITunes 6.0.2 and Permission Repair
Just a note for the masses...
After I installed iTunes 6.0.2 and QT 7.0.4 on my Powerbook under 10.3.9, I found that I was unable to repair my permissions, with the process hanging halfway through and a dialog telling me that Disk Utility had lost its connection to Disk Management and I'd have to quit, then restart Disk Utility and try again. Unfortunately this doesn't result in success and I was becoming increasingly frustrated, thinking that it might have been a QT 7.0.4 issue. I followed a few suggestions from others, but nothing worked, and was ready to go visit the Genius Bar...
But I did find out from MacFixIt that it's an easily solved (temporarily, at least) problem.
I moved iTunes out of the Applications folder to the Desktop, THEN ran Disk Utility/Repair Permissions- and the process completed normally and successfully. Easy as that. I then put iTunes back in Applications.
I did read that you have to repeat this process every time you want to repair permissions, at least until the glitch is fixed. It also seems to occur mostly with 10.3.9, though I should note this Permission problem didn't happen on my Mac Mini.
Just wanted to pass the info on.
--RichardI downloaded iTunes 6.0.3, with OS10.3.9 and found the same problem with trying to repair permissions. Moving iTunes to the desktop also seems to have fixed it. What’s so special about the Applications folder?
When I ran TinkerTool to repair permissions it gave the following log:
Determining correct file permissions.
* malloc[511]: Deallocation of a pointer not malloced: 0x130a810; This could be a double free(), or free() called with the middle of an allocated block; Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug
: for architecture i386 object: ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes malformed object (unknown flavor for flavor number 0 in LC_UNIXTHREAD command 27 can't byte swap it).
I’m not up to speed with the arcane language of Unix, so haven’t the faintest idea what it all means.
Maybe someone out there could come up with a patch to fix this annoying problem.

Running macbook pro 2.53ghz late 2010
mountain lion
8gbs memI would try it on a PC and see if you can format it, then put it back on the Mac and try again. If it's not seen on a PC, then there's the strong likelihood that there's a hardware issue; either the bridge/chip set or the HD itself is dying/dead. There's also the small possibility that the cable is faulty, so I'd try a different cable too.

When I copy and paste in powerpoint all that shows is the link
I am new to using a macbook and when I try to copy an image from the web into powerpoint all that shows is the link of the picture. This is when I either use the control copy, control paste or right click. I am able to get the image to show up if I go up to edit and click paste special. It is getting really frustrating just wondering if there is anything I can do to fix this?
Have you tried importing it with standard workflow instead of coyping and pasting.
Is the resolution of your powerpoint presentation and Captivate Project same, make sure it is same, else, it would rescale it to fit on the sldie, rescaling might detoriate the quality.
Thanks,

Disk Utility Failed permission repair
Hi, Just recently I've encountered a strange and hopefully not serious problem.
When I try to repair permissions on the volume Macintosh HD, I receive the following error:
+Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”+
+ Reading permissions database.+
+ Reading the permissions database can take several minutes.+
+Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.+
+Permissions repair complete+
Any help would be great.... thanksOk, here's the thing. I'm abroad right now and although I did bring my Install DVD, which I was required to present along with my computer in my two previous visits to the Certified Apple Dealer in my area--even though these were both purely hardware issues(busted fan on one occasion, failing optical drive in the other), this time when my issue is purely software based it seems that the DVDs didn't work properly; they mounted, but the finder showed no content in the window. I found this rather odd, because 2 days prior to visiting I was able to boot from the DVD and repair permissions on the drive in a vain attempt to resolve the software issue I was having which was that the system wouldn't boot. Anyway, this is usually no problem in the states, where I once called applecare and told them my Install discs weren't working and was promptly shipped a new set no questions asked.
However, they seemed to insinuate that this was too much red tape or work for them, although they didn't say this outright. Instead, they simply installed Leopard on my system I guess as a concession cuz I was originally running Tiger, and suggested that it'd be most efficient if I called for new Discs upon returning home.
SO, as you can see, I'm kind of in a quandry here with no Install discs from which to repair permissions.
Can you suggest anything, anything else that might work.
I even ran TechTool that came with applecare but that doesn't seem to have a permissions repair facility.
SO I'm in DIRE, DIRE need of some HELPFUL suggestions to circumvent this temporary hurdle, and would love to get this issue SOLVED.
I'm remiss to go back to the same dealer b/c not only is it a quite long and painstaking journey there, they seem to like to hold on to the computer at their leisure even when it's clear that there only plan is a fresh install. NOTE*** by no means is this a dis to them, as they are using their due diligence and adhering to policy, but I'll be back home in a coupla months and was looking for an alternative. -
Ever since upgrade to Mavericks I have been having problems which are too numerous to mention. I finally found a program from a UCBerkley professor called Pacifier which indicated 4000+ of 400,000+ files and folders did not install. I was unable to go further to try to fix everything because Pacifier can't find ANY Apple installers on my HD. It recommended I download the Mavericks installer without reinstalling to continue; however, after having done so (very slow connection; takes 30 hours to download) and although the installer appears in apps while downloading it disappears and NO Apple installer packages can be found on my hard drive. I tried to download Yosemite once and it indicated my system wasn't eligible for the upgrade. Its' download time was similar to Mavericks; 28+ hours.
I am using a Macbook Pro mid-2012 version OS X 10.9.5 (13F34); Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5; Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3; Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB.
Regardless of how many files and apps I remove my memory is being eaten up to the point I can hardly do anything at all. There are no civil words for how frustrated I am. Someone please help me.
Thanks,
JJInstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer. -
JUnit - Regular Expressions and all that Jazz
I can't help you with the JMeter-specific stuff, but your regex has a couple of regex metacharacters that need to be escaped. Also, the template should refer to group #1, becuase that's where the actual id number is matched.Reg Exp: <a href="appointmentDetailsPDA\.jsp\?id=(\d+)&
Template: $1$[/preHello, FD-san
Ive tried using a Regular Expression Extractor in
JMeter, with the following parameters, but this does
not seem to work:
Ref Name: ${appointment_id}
Reg Exp: <a
href="appointmentDetailsPDA.jsp?id=([\d]*)\&
Template: $0$
Match No: -1
Default: Specify the variable "appointment_id" without "$" and "{|}"
Just
Ref Name: appointment_id
Reg Exp: <a href="appointmentDetailsPDA.jsp?id=([\d]*)\&
Template: $1$ //$0$ refers to whatever the entire expression matches.
Match No: 0 // stores rendom of matches
Default:
in this case you can refer to:
appointment_id_gn - as to the n-th group of matches (n=0,1,2, ...)
appointment_id_g - as to the last number of group (number of groups - 1)
appointment_id - as to the group #1
Good luck -
I did that and the phone is not respoinding.

When opening my MBP, all that shows is the apple logo and the forbidden sign
Hello everyone,
So I'm on a 2011 MPB using 10.9.5.
I've closed it after using two nights ago, and when I came back home the day after and tried opening it, all that appeared was an alternation between the apple logo and the forbidden sign (here it is : http://stickeramoi.com/3447-3369-large/autocollant-panneau-interdit-interdiction .jpg)
I've tried repairing the disk but that failed.
Tried also re-installing OS X on it but that took about 17 hours (which is ridiculous) so I've cancelled that and instead, tried restoring a Time Machine save.
After it finished restoring the latest backup, I'm still faced with the same problem. It just won't boot.
Thank you for your time and help,Yeah well I think I've tried about everything that I found out there.
From console commands to installing Lion through Internet recovery...That's it, I give up
Will take it for replacement tomorrow.
Thank you -
Reset, now all that comes on is the apple Icon
I bought an ipod touch for my son. He now has an iphone and gave the the ipod touch. I went to reset it and after it reset, all that comes on is the apple icon. You can do a hard restart but after that, it does the same thing. I doesn't even show up in devices under itunes. How can I reload everything like new through teh computer? I called service and support but they want 149 to fix it, i just as soon buy a new one for that price.
- Let the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an hour, try a reset:
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Then connect to your icomputer and restore via iTunes.
You said you reset the iPod. Just what did you do? -
When I repair disk permissions using Disk Utility and it says it's completed the task, I click on it again and it repairs more. This has been going on for hours now. Could there be that many wrong permissions? Should it get to "all repaired" eventually?
It's normal behavior. You don't have to worry about. Most of what's listed is just a report of what the utility finds., not necessarily that there is omething wrong.
If you want to find out more, read the link below, or see the More Like This links on this page.

iMac won't start up, disk utility tried to repair disk it shows "keys out of order" error message in red and advises me to back up files, reformat disk and restore backed up files. I have no idea how to back up and restore etc... Help! Please!
Get an external drive of sufficient capacity to hold everything on your internal drive.
Partition and format the external drive.
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Clone your internal drive to the external drive.
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility

because it is three times faster than wireless.
Open Startup Disk preferences and set the internal drive as the startup volume, then click on the Restart button.
Restore your data from your external drive backup. -
The problems occurred after photoshop elements said I did not have the necessary permissions to save changes to a photo. I then allowed all to permissions to all disks, I have three external hard drives but I cannot restore from any as they all appear to have some kind of problem. I have repaired all disks in recovery mode and verified all inc mac hd. All permissions are repaired and all disks are saying repaired. So where do I go from here to get the mac back on running mavericks without loosing thousands of photos and all other data ?
Do I need to reinstall Mac OS ?
The only options I get to reinstall is mountain lion?.. I have been running the latest mavericks .?.
Do I reinstall and then update?
The external drives are not smart drives so how do I ensure I retain all my files?your best option is to connect an external drive and reinstall OS X on that external to run the system from. then copy all your files over to the new install for safe keeping. then try doing a reinstall of Mavericks over the top of the current install on the internal drive and test.
