Disk Repair before installing OSX Lion?

Hi!
I'm hoping somebody can help me out.
I recently discovered my 27" iMac has a Disk Error that the Disk Utility couldn't repair without using my Original Software Disc. I did not have a chance to do this yet for fear that I may lose data before backing my machine up.
I'd like to update to OSX Lion, do I need to resolve this error before updating or can I safely update my machine?
Thanks!

You need to handle the problem immediately! As a general rule of thumb NEVER attempt an update or upgrade on any system that isn't sound. Make sure it's working OK prior to updating, you will need to locate the original Install DVD, a Snow Leopard upgrade DVD or if you have a bootable clone external HD you can boot from that and use it to run Repair Disk.  However I would recommend using the original install DVD that shipped with the computer and using Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode to see if your HD is healthy. If it isn't then it should be replaced immediately.

  • Advice please on Installing OSX Lion on a Partition for FCP7

Always best to ask for advice before messing with the Mac!
I have OSX 10.8.5 Mountain Lion installed on my late 2009 27" iMac, I installed that after a recent complete drive failure thinking that a more up to date OS would be a good idea, in part it was but my most valuable application FCP 7 Studio behaves oddly now especially with key commands and some timeline functions are screwy. So I want to install OSX Lion on a partition on the HD and run FCP7 on that partition. FCP 7 behaved just fine under Lion.
I have made a 700 gig partition on the iMac's HD, and I do have an installation copy of OSX Lion that I downloaded from my App Store account. That is at the moment on my regular iMac's Mountain Lion partition in the Applications folder. I also have a copy of it on an external drive.
So my question is how can I install Lion on the newly created partition, and do so safely? What are the procedures for this?
I have my FCP 7 Studio disks so I will be able to reinstall that on the new Lion partition afterwards.
I'd appreciate any step by step help or pointers to where I can find those instructions. Having messed up with the iMac last month I am nervous about just diving into this without " professional help"!
    Many thanks,
    PM

Ok, worked it out myself….all's well now.

  • How do I re-install osx lion

I would like to re-install OSX Lion on my MacBook.  I have previously loaded it from the APP Store but can't find th epath to get to it again.  Can anyone help?

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Problems installing OSX Lion - new Mac Mini 2011

    Hi!
I'm having major problem with my brand new Mac Mini.
I wanted to upgrade it right away after reading so many succeful upgrading reports on various forums so I bought a 120GB Intel 320 SSD disk and 2x4 GB of Kingston 1333mhz ram. I swapped the drives right away and idiotically used to original drive in a case to create an external installation USB-drive (my 4GB USB drives didn't work).
I then created a bootable USB-disk with the external original drive and tried to install but only get the circle with slash after selecting the drive in the "options" menu. If I remove the USB-drive I get a flashing folder icon. If start holding down Command + S I get a message saying that the "version of OSX is not supported on this platform".
I also tried using the Recovery Assistant HD to create a bootable recovery tool but that gives the same results.
    In short:
I can't install OSX Lion on a brand new Mac Mini with upgraded HD and Ram. I don't have the original installation anymore.
    Am I out of luck?

Internet Recovery solved this problem. Option+Command+R.

  • After re-installing OSX Lion neither USB Ports work

I have a Macbook Pro 15" Intel Core i7 Mid 2010 model, I had upgraded from the App Store to OSX Lion and was running ok, but at the time had half the disk partitioned into Windows, so got to the stage that I didn't want Windows so wiped it, and backed up the OSX Partition as I figured why not have a nice fresh OSX Lion install . . . . BIG MISTAKE
Since I've re-installed OSX Lion I now have no connectivity through the 2 USB Ports, or the SD Card as far as I can tell.
Since I'm a month out of the warranty I don't exist to Apple Support any more, so I've been trying everything I can think of or any suggestions I can find.
I've tried the PRAM and SMC resets which obviously don't work, I've tried the old 3+2 key trick - yup, you guessed it, NOTHING.
I have re-installed Lion 3 times, same deal - feck all is being recognised.
I've resorted to sticking a small Windows partition on at the moment to make sure it's not hardware issue, not sure what else I've tried?? Oh yeah, took it apart, removed the battery for an hour or so, even tried booting with no battery - nothing.
Any suggestions other than playing frisbee would be welcome, although, to be fair, I might end up having a game of that if this carries on ...

Ok, so been to the Genius Bar and basically they went through everything I had done already just to test it, and then also their own in-house hardware test that apparently only they can run, which is fair enough - all tests came back reporting the board in fine condition, and that the SD Card and USB Ports were fine, no errors.
So, we tested again after another PRAM/NVRAM and SMC Reset - still nothing - so he took it away and ran it on their other diagnostic machine which reset all the firmware and put it all back on again, testing at each stage and yet still nothing.
Basically I need a new Logic Board which will cost £400-£500 to replace, I know what you're thinking, and I am too, how brilliant is that!! .... Not very, but hey, what can I do?
Next stop, home insurance, I'm sure I pay you for some reason ... wish me luck!
Oh, I am going to try one more Lion install, just for the **** of it.

  • IMac keep shutting down after installing OSX lion

    Hi,
I have a mid 2010 27 inch i5 machine and after I had installed OSX Lion last month the machine randomly shut itself down while I'm using it.  At first I thought it was because of a software problem with Final Cut Pro X, since I installed that at the same time and it would shut down while I was using it.  Then it start to shut down while I'm just browsing the net.  Restarting is not a problem but a pain to loose unsafe data when it crashes.
Does anybody else have this problem?  Again the machine was working fine before OSX Lion so I don't think it's a hardware issue.  On average it would shutdown once or twice per usage day sometime a few minutes after turning on the machine, still cool, and sometime after a while, not excessively hot.
Appreciate any help and thank you in advance!

  • Troubleshooting mail 5.0 since installing OSx Lion

    Hi,
We had first snowlepard without troubleshooting and since we installed OSx Lion we got major problems with the sending feature in Mail 5.0 - the system is not connecting to the server when we put mail on sending - almost every time it's ends up with a message where I have to mark which "server" I want to use for sending but I want work out even if I try everything from MobileMe to smtp-address. Sometimes when I restart the computer and delete the account for the mail and set a new up again it can work for a short while.
I would be grateful if someone could respond with ideas how to solve it.
The serienumber is W8848L8M1AQ, version Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1 (11B26)
    Best regards
    John M

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I am having a similar issue on my iMac 27" (2011).
Once the computer goes to sleep, Apple TV is unable to wake it up (I do have the "Wake for network access" Energy Saver option turned on).
I have to specifically login and "wake up" the computer before my Apple TV can see it.
Overall, I find Mount Lion to be much more stable and smoother compared to Lion - but this issue is very annoying

  • I installed osx lion and now wifi led blinks constantly

I installed osx lion yesterday and now the wifi led on my modem blinks constantly
even when the mac is turned of.
Further on, in the left colum in finder there is under "Shared" a icon of a pc and written:
    acer-13db0a52d9
    I never seen this before.
I tried to open it but the only thing i could trace, was "NEIGHBORHOOD"..
    Am I being Hacked?
Funny thing, is that this week I saw a guy in the street sitting in his car with a labtop.
    What should I do?

Right click on the file and select get info. Click on the little padlock at the bottom and enter your password, change your user names permission to Read & Write. ( There will be a list of users at the bottom of the get info box with permissions which you can change.)

Lion never came on a disc. If you made one yourself at one point was it made on the iMac you are now using? What was the original version of OS X that came on your iMac when it was new?

  • Remote printer is recognized but message says can't find printer?  It worked great before installing OSX Maverick

Remote printer is recognized but message says can't find printer?  It worked great before installing OSX Maverick?

    Thank you for your response.
Unfortunately I have already rebooted the router and that did not fix the problem. The weird thing is that the computer is connected to the network, it just won't connect to my computer. I have printed the network configuration page to confirm this, and it says the wireless signal is strong.
I have not changed anything at all recently in terms of routers, networks, etc. The printer stopped working completely randomly.
Is there a part in the printer that like emits a signal which computers, phones, etc are supposed to detect? I don't know enough about the mechanics to really theorize about what is wrong, but it seems like that is the only thing that stopped working.
Do you have any other suggestions?

  • Help with installing OSX Lion on iMac with broken display

    Hi,
Having some trouble installing OSX Lion on my 5 year old iMac which has a broken display.
The display has been dead for a couple of years now and I've been using an external monitor without any problems. Today I decided to upgrade to Lion - I downloaded the installer from the App Store and started the install which rebooted the machine. After reboot I'm presented with a grey 'thatched' background image on the external display and nothing else, no menu bar, installation menu etc.
I presume the internal display is showing the menu I need but I can't see it as that screen is broken. Is there a way to turn on mirroring during the install process so I can use my external display? I've tried various shortcuts held down during startup - OPTION-F14, CMD-F1, CMD-F2 - but none have worked.
If this isn't possible, is there a way to abort the Lion install process and go back to using my Snow Leopard install? Whenever I boot the machine I am taken to the OS X Lion installer and don't know how to get back to my Snow Leopard install. I tried holding down OPTION key on startup to choose the list of available OS installs, but again, the internal display is being used so I can't see what to do.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Genius idea, thank you. Was able to step through the install procedure using voiceover and the screenshots on this page http://www.macstories.net/mac/os-x-lion-installation-guide-boot-discs-and-qa/
Definitely a first for me, installing an OS with voice only

  • After installing OSX Lion I am not able to find my preference files

I am having troubles with iCal and iPhoto since installing OSX Lion so I went to trash my preference files in user/library/etc but find no Library folder and within a folder called Clean Library/preferences there are no preferences files as in the past.  Any clues?

In Lion the Finder folder is now invisible.  To make it permanetely visible enter the following in the Terminal applicaiton window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button on the keyboard.

  • Installing OSX Lion on OSX Mountain Lion Partitioned drive-Help/Advice please

I have my late 2009 27" iMac running OSX 10.8.5 Mountain Lion but need to install OSX Lion on a separate partition and would appreciate help / procedure advice as to how to do this safely.
I need to do this because I have found that running FCP7 Studio under 10.8.5 there's some missing or odd keyboard and Timeline functions that were not there under Lion and FCP7 is a valuable tool for me that I don't want compremised. I'd like to be able to run FCP7 / Lion in a separate partition on the iMac.
I have partitioned the HD and there's about 700gigs of clean space on the second partition. I also have downloaded from my account on the App Store a copy of Install Mac OS Lion to my Applications folder and I also have a copy of it on a USB Thumbdrive.
So, what do I do now to safely install the second OS without messing up everything else that's on the machine in the prime partition?
    Thanks!

Ok….I managed to work it out…..Installed Lion on the second partition, working fine now.
