Disk Repair Help Please

Hi,
I'm stuck - Verify Disk tells me to repair it.
I'm on 10.6.7 and put in my Install disc 1 (10.4.6) and Press C
It keeps spitting the disc out - at boot or even booted.
Cannot get to Utilities > Disk Repair - what stupid thing am I missing please?
Thanks,
David

I'll be here on and off all day Monday.
I'll post this now though. You can hook up your MacBook to the Mini using Target Disk Mode and repair the MacBook using the Mini's Disk Utility's Disk Repair on the Macbook hard drive.

Good evening,
Just wondering if you guys can give me any help with regards to my Mid 2010 Mac Mini running Mountain Lion.
I only use the computer for internet browsing and iTunes, I've upgraded the RAM to 8GB myself which was straight forward.
Yesterday I get home from work and the Mac is turned off (I usually leave it on Stand-By). Upon turning it on by the button on the back I get the Apple Logo and the rotating circle, followed by this screen;

If I click on Disk Utility I've got these options on the left;

I've a 160GB external hard drive which has stuff on it now but could transfer that stuff over to a very old and slow laptop if I need the extra space for backing up.
Verify Disk on the top drive gives me this, which looks fine?;

But Disk Repair on the greyed out drive gives me this;

Which doesn't sound good?
The bad bit.. I've not backed up anything since I got the computer, I've got pictures/music on my computer I'd like to keep if possible.. But I don't know anything about backing things up, or how I'd go about it. Sounds pretty terminal from that pop-up message from Apple!
I've got installation disks if I need them.
So you helpful people - What do I need to do first?
Thanks in advance!
(Apologies about the bad pictures, thought it'd be better than nothing though!)

Thanks so far, Viking.
Tried to do the Shift or S key on boot up after/on the chime but nothing.
Will try a wired keyboard tomorrow, will any USB keyboard work to you know? Can borrow one from work if so..
EDIT;
I appear to have got it into Single User Mode. Tried the fsck command, this is what I got back from that;

Still started up in Disk Utility..
If I try and install Lion again I get this;

So, I guess it's dead?

• Disk Repair help

Hi I am getting a message in disk repair that says "This drive has a hardware problem that can't be repaired.  Back up as much as possible and replace disk.
See an Apple Dealer.
It is Media S.M.A.R.T  status failing  (whatever that means)
Does this mean my hard drive is fried?
Thanks all help much appreciated.

Hi WZZZ
I went out and bought a new iMac.  Time Capsule had worked perfectly, so all is wonderful again.  I had tried to
back up with another external hard drive before the crash, but it didn't work, so I am glad the TC did it's job.
I am going to get a new hard drive put in the old iMac (it's 6.5 years old).  I just upgraded the OS to Snow Leopard
from Tiger, and increased the memory, so if it works for a while as the grandkids computer I will be happy.
I just wanted to thank you for your quick answer.  It really helped me to make some decisions.

• Need disk repair help fast!

My internal CD drive broke so I bought an external one. Problem is that the computer is in need of serious Norton repair and when using the Sony external CD/DVD drive to run the Norton disk the computer does not recognize the hard drive so I can't repair anything. In other words, I put in the Norton cd and it shows up just fine on the desktop but when Norton opens up and I am supposed to choose a disk to repair nothing shows up to choose from. Nothing at all, just a big blank space. The external drive works because I've burned from it although when I try to burn directly from, say iTunes, it goes to the origional disk drive which is broken so I have to use the toast light program to burn. Maybe there is someway I can make my external drive the default one? It is taking forever to load each program and I'm feeling doom with the way the computer has been acting lately and I really can't afford to be without it as I run my business from it. thanks

Hi again, Donna,
Happy to hear you got rid of Norton!
You say your Mac has not panicked since you got rid of Norton, right? If so, you may have already fixed the kernel panic problem. I have not had a single kernel panic since I uninstalled Norton years ago.
If you do experience another kernel panic, the advice about kernel panics that you got from mrtotes is about the best that most Mac users can do for themselves. As explained in those suggestions, kernel panics are often hardware related. Be sure to disconnect all external devices that are not absolutely necessary when checking for and attempting to solve kernel panics.
You should not need to take your Mac to an Apple Service Technician for kernel panics if you can fix it yourself with the advice you have already been given.
<hr width="85%">
Next issue: You mention that your Mac runs slow (the beach ball spins for a long time.)
If you multiple applications running, close all but one and see if the problem goes away. If so, you may just be working your Mac too hard. Run fewer apps at a time.
If you have any external devices, including your external CD/DVD drive, connected, unhook them all and check to see if the beach ball goes away. If so, one or more of your devices may be the source of the problem. You can find which by reconnecting only one at a time and then checking to find whether the beach ball comes back. If no one device causes the beach-ball to reappear, try connecting two at once to see if any of your external devices might be conflicting with each other.
Your Mac may need basic Mac OS X maintenance. You have already done a Safe Boot, (and perhaps a disk repair), so try a permissions repair next.
Unless you have set the slider for your computer to "Never" sleep in System Preferences > Energy Saver > Sleep, you should also force background maintenance tasks as explained in
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107388
The article lists several equally effective ways you can do this, I personally use MacJanitor, which is free and very simple to use.
FileVault slows disk operation and adds processor tasks to your Mac. If you have enabled FileVault, turn it off (turning FileVault off can take a while) to see if your beach-ball problem goes away.
One other thing that can cause slow (beach-ball) operation is that your startup disk may be too full. Check free (Available) space with Finder > File > Get Info. If you do not have at least 10 GB of free space, try Increasing available space on your hard disk.
For more comprehensive suggestions on OS X Maintenance, see Gulliver's

• Disk Utility/Repair Help Please...

Hi
I have been having some issues with a Kernel Panic on my MBP. I am trying to solve them with the help of the X-Lab, but when I do the disk utility>repair permissions I get the following messages:
Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Permissions repair complete
Does anyone think this may be a contributory factor. If it is unlikely that these are not to do with the Kernel Panic, any ideas as to what they are and what I should do.
many thanks in advance
Rob

• Apple Macbook Pro Hard Drive Repair Help Please

Cause of the mistake, i was being dumb and wanted to use my backup timemachine drive for an external drive, so I dragged the timemachine folder out of it and tried to empty the trash can, half way through I realized that it was trying to wipe my whole back up of my computer which would have been forever. So I panic, force shut off the computer, disconnect the drive and restarted the computer. My drive says 200 gb free when I know there is 400 left. So obviously the trash files are still around in my hard drive.
Did a disk verify and there is something wrong and the computer wants me to reboot and use repair upon rebooting the mac. I haven't done this in a while so I'm not sure if it's expecting me to have a backup from time machine.... the one i just fatally "deleted" or if it gets rid of the trashed files. Can someone help me please before I lose A LOT of work.
Update : And let's say I did need a back up, then if I just backed it up right now, with the missing but still taking up space files, would I still get those files in the back up or no?

As I understand it, you can't fix a failing SMART status. Believe me I tried on my iBook! I was originally under the impression that DiskWarrior and Tech Tool Pro could fix anything, but I now understand that they and Disk Utility can only repair the directory. As it was explained to me, SMART was set up to give warning of hard drive failure so that you could rescue your data before the hard drive dies altogether. You can disable it I think, but that's like putting black tape over the warning light in your car that lights up if you are running out of oil--possible to do, but not a good idea.
So if your SMART status is failing, then the only cure is to replace the hard drive. The hard drive can work for a while, but it's on its way out.
Here's a little background information on SMART status:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000184.htm
And I hope this was just a rhetorical question!

• Disk verification help please

I ran a disk verification but it says I need to use the cd to fix the drive. I have snow leopard on my laptop. I got the laptop with Tiger installed. Do i use the snow leopard CD to run and fix the drive or use my original Tiger install DVD and run disk verification from there?
I don't wanna put in tiger and end up deleting something I need.
Help would be much appreciated. thank you/

Hi H,

• Western Digital drive not showing up in disk utility--Help please.

Hello all. This is my first post. I am having trouble with my WD 500GB external hard drive. It is not showing up in disk utility when connected either via the firewire or USB ports. I purchased the drive about 8months ago, brought it home and set it up as my Time Machine backup drive. It worked great for several months, until it got full. Then it stopped showing up on the desktop for no apparent reason. I discovered through reading support documents on the Apple web site that when I set the drive up initially I should have changed the partitioning protocol from master boot record to GUID, but I did not. I followed the apple web site instructions for making the change expos facto, but was instructed to press buttons that were "grayed out". As such, I couldn't do it. Perhaps foolishly, I thought that I would just start all over by reinitializing it, formatting it correctly (with my new found knowledge) and then do the time machine backup fresh. However, the drive no longer shows up in disk utility no matter how or in what order I connect it. When the drive is connected by firewire there is evidence of some recognition of the drive in system profiler, but it is listed as "External HDD Buttons and Lights". There is also evidence of the My Book showing up at a minimal level (eg. the firmware revision and a few other details are listed). On the front of the drive is a ring of blue lights that progress in a clockwise direction as soon as a connection is made via either firewire or USB. Before that it is solid blue. I have read through all the info that I can find on this site, and all the suggestions require the drive being recognized in disk utility. Without that, I am stuck. I know this must be a solvable problem, because the drive just a bucket of parts before it was manufactured. I just don't know enough to solve the problem or even know what qeustion to ask. I would really appreciate some help. Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post.

If you can't boot from an OSX DVD, it sounds bad. Yet I think you said you were running Disk Utility from the DVD?
I got an external Firewire drive enclosure for 2.5 inch IDE drives from Other World Computing (OWC)
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MOTGFW400/ but similar items are available from many vendors like Newegg. About $60 for the basic model. More money can buy additional interfaces on the enclosure like FW800 and USB2; an AC adapter instead of letting the firewire bus power the drive (usually OK).

• Cant write/edit data on my external hard disk! Help please!~~

Okay guys, currently, i'm using Tiger version 10.4.11. My problem is that i cant edit data or write data to any external hard disks, like the maxtor One Touch and so on. Only thing i can do is to extract the data from the disks. I have tried to write on multiple hard disks but in all my attempts i have failed. i've tried to edit my network settings, but no results.
So, i seek help from anyone out here!

Hello, yea.. thanks man =)
Basically, its a shared hard disk between my macbook and a windows PC. So i kinda use the PC to write all my backups and data on the hard disk.
I have quite a few hard disk and they all have the same issue. It says 'The item 'file x'cannot be moved because 'my hard disk' cannot be modified.'I've used the software provided from the hard disk manufacturer, Maxtor/Seagate, to reformat the brand new portable hard disk which i bought yesterday.
Its connected via USB, same as all the other ones i have.
eh. the get info for it says

erm... its a portable drive which i carry around, so i guess its not a network drive? and how doi determine the network settings? Sorry man.. not really good at these =x

• Macbook Pro Slow/Disk space help please

I have mad skills in other areas, but not computer management.    Help appreciated!
My older Macbook Pro is slowing down.   Websites are slow to load, switching from one app to another takes way too long.  I looked up reasons and low disk space seems likely.  I ran EtreSoft and got the into below.
My confusion:  I can't figure out what is taking up 150 gig of space.  I have tons of pics and videos, but still only 38 gig worth.
Any advice?   Thanks for your help!

• Tiger disk image - help please!

I bought an iBook G3 from craigslist.org installed with Tiger. I didn't get a Tiger disk, but I did get a disk image on a partition with the following files:
1. Welcome to Tiger and Read Before You Install PDFs
2. Install Mac OS X that gives me a restart button
3. Xcode Tools folder
4. Optional Installs .pkg
5.Application, Library, System, Volumes, bin, dev, private, sbin, usr, Japanese folders
6. etc, tmp, var aliases
7. mach_kernel file
Is this what is usually on a Tiger DVD?
My iBook has only a CD-ROM drive and I want to make a Tiger CD. Which of the listed things can I exclude to fit onto a CD?
I'm a Mac newbie - Thanks in advance for help!

It won't fit on a CD. You need a DVD. Do not remove anything. This is the coomplete Tiger DVD. The dmg need burned, is all. Disk Utility should show the dmg. If it does, insert a blank DVD, select the image, hit the burn icon.
You need a DVD burner, and the dmg might have to be on the internal drive for DU to see it.

• I am trying to download CS4 onto my new Mac computer.  I don't have the original disk.  Help please!

I can't find my original disk to download CS4.  Is there another way I can download this?

Well, it certainly does. 10.10.3 just got released today and it looks nice.
I am downloading ADBEPHSPCS4_LS1.dmg which is the 1GB Photoshop installer.
DMG is Disk Image and that means double-clicking it will mount a disk as if it was your cdrom.
It may open and show an "Install Photoshop CS4" Option which you double click to start the install.
CS4 was before "Gatekeeper", so it may get stubborn and give you an "unknown developer" warning and refuse to launch.
In that case you right or ctrl-click on the installer and choose Open as if to say, "it's ok, just run it".
More when I see what's going on.

My iMac goes to disc utilities on startup, repair disk doesn't cure it and I can't reinstall Mountain Lion because I don't remember my ID and password at the time I bought the software the system isn't accepting my current details and Apple isn't recognising the answers to my security questions.  They don't even seem to have my correc date of birth so I can't progress the reinstallation.  I'm currently abroad and have my iMac with me but with no way of contacting Apple that I can find, I'm at a loss and very reluctant to pay £35 to try and get my ID and pasword sorted out given that their system recognises my current details.  can anyone help please?
AG

when they gifted me the mountain Lion software several years ago.
Mountain Lion was introduced in July 2012. Did the people who gifted you possibly use their Apple ID for the purchase of your OS? If you used your own Apple ID, you should have simply used the one you use for all things app store. The problem with any purchase at the app store is: whatever Apple ID was used to purchase, it willl stay tied to that Apple ID forever. And, purchases from the app store are not transferable.
So, you can check with the person(s) who gifted you or spend $20 to buy it - or, if your hardware is compatible with the new OS Mavericks, you could download it and associate it with your Apple ID.
FWIW, according to the licensing agreement, the OS remains the property of Apple and you are only granted a license to run it.
