Disk repair won't work..

Hi there... Im trying to install windows using bootcamp but when I do the partition part it says my disk needs repair... ok
When I go to the disk utility the repair button doesn't work... I do the verify disk and this happens...

Hi.
You cannot repair the disk you are booted from. You need to insert your OS X disk, reboot holding down the 'C' key, select your language at the 'Language' screen, then on the next screen choose Utilities>Disk Utility from the menu bar. Then you will be able to Repair Disk. Re-run it after it says 'repairs were made' (or similar) until you get the message that 'the Volume appears to be OK'.
Good luck,
Adrian

  • My cataloge won't open, says it is corrupt and repair won't work and I can't access anything.

Don't know what happened. Closed Lightroom after working on photos and now it won't open again. I get a pop up saying the cataloge is corrupt and when I try to repair, it won't work. The AdobeTech note comes up as an error page. I desperately need to open it as all of my recent vacation photos are on it and only half finished. Supposed to be showing them at a party this weekend.
    Please can anyone help?

    Good to hear!

If you save (xmp) metadata as you go, then you never have to redo editing work when falling to backup catalog (just sayin'..).
PS - all develop settings and almost all metadata will be in xmp if saved, but not everything from catalog is contained in xmp (and not everything in Lightroom is contained in your catalog!).

  • DVD burned from a disk image won't work on different computers???

Under the directions for how to burn a DVD from an disk image, the Apple Help document (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006) says this:

Does this mean that the DVDs that I am burning from the disk image won't be able to be played on a PC? a Mac other than mine? Neither? WHAT? Video DVDs are in the UDF format. The disk image you created is in the UDF format. When you use Disk Utility to burn the disk image to writable media, the new discs will be in UDF format and all will be well.
    You are doing things correctly.
BTW, unless you have an external burner with lots of cooling, if you expect to use the burner in your Mac (which DOESN'T have lots of cooling), it's a good idea to pause between discs to allow the burner to cool down. (BTW, this comment is based on the reported results of several people in the forum. If you don't allow the cool down timer, you will start to create 'bad' discs. Also it is VERY important that you reduce the burn speed in Disk Utility to 4x or lower in order to create discs with maximum compatability with players. (You should see a way to change the speed in Disk Utility afterr you have inserted a disc.)

  • Disk warrior won't work – error 2153, 4200

    Hi,
I have a g5 dual core 2.0g with 2 drives installed in it, lately I have not been able to use disk warrior on my primary drive. I find this confusing since disk warrior used to work fine for this drive.
Here are the problems that I'm encountering:
    1) I can't boot from the disk warrior cd, my computer hangs at the 1st grey apple screen with the fan spinning at full tilt and nothing happening for at least 10 mins. Additionally, there are some odd graphics artifacts on the startup screen.
    2) Once I've booted up in my secondary drive, I can't use disk warrior to repair my startup drive, I get an error message that says the disk is still in use, and give the error code 2153, 4200.
I have preformed the standard suite of permission repairs, and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem.
    Cheers

All right, I figured this on out on my own.
It appears that retrospect was running at all times regards of which internal disk I was using, so I could never unmount the volume I was trying to fix – hence the disk warrior errors 2153, 4200.
On the advice of this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=744865 I opened terminal and typed ] /bin/ps auxww and found two process related to retrospect running from the other volume. Once I killed these, disk warrior worked like a charm.

  • How can I initialize an external hard drive when disk utility won't work?

Have a Seagate 300 GB external firewire drive. Formatted it for Mac. Had worked great and then one day it would not mount, got message box with choices of "initialize", "ignore" and 'eject". Clicking initialize, disk utility comes up with only the "first aid" button showing active. When I click on it nothing happens. As far as I can tgell there are no other options
Any suggestions on how I can repair this drive or recover data would be much appreciated.
    Thanks, Jim

OK, I suspect First Aid may be blank since Disk Utility "sees" the device but does not think there's anything on it.
    1. How about if you select the drive and then click the Erase tab?
    2. Also, what happens if you connect the drive, select Ignore, then open Disk Utility? Does the drive show up?
    3. What's your objective here? Do you want to try to recover data from the drive, or simply erase it? If you're looking to recover data from the drive, see my "Data Recovery" FAQ.
    4. Do you know what happened before the problem arose? For example, was there a power outage or was the cable or drive suddenly disconnected before the drive was Ejected? Any of these events can result in the drive's partition map being corrupted, leading to the kind of problems you're seeing.
    5. Did you build this FireWire drive? That is, buy and enclosure, buy a drive, and install the latter in the former? If so, have you checked the connections?
    Good luck!

  • [] Enable Disk Use won't work

I have tried changing my iPod options to Enable Disk Use, but whenever I go back to see the options it remains unchecked and my ipod drive won't show up in windows explorer.
Do I have a faulty iPod?. Also I have noticed that if I disable Art Work it still keeps showing album covers when I play music on my ipod, and when I go back to the options again it keeps the Art Work checkbox checked.
I have even restored my iPod see if that would do the trick but it's helpless. Can someone please help me out?

    hi y'all
(sorry pac and CoJeff ... i'm jumping on the pile)
One more thing, when I check the "Enable Disk Use" checkbox and then I right click on my ipod and click on Update, I get this error saying: "The ipod 'iPod' can't be updated. The Disk can not be Read from or Written to"
that may well be relevant. the ipod itunes preferences are mostly stored on the ipod (which is how an ipod in manual mode on one PC can stay in manual mode when it is connected to a different one). so if you're getting a connection problem like that, it could cause problems getting the ipod preference changes to stick.
so as well as pac's suggestion (which is a known cause of your message), try checking on the other possibilities in this document:
"Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod

  • 1 App-v package (5.0) won't start, howto repair (default repair won't work)

    Hi,
I have this one App-v applicationon a server that won't start, I get some strange error what doesn't give any results in google. The application works fine on another server so the application itself is fine.
I tried to remove the package via powershell but it won't let me. Now I tried
Get-AppvClientPackage -All | Remove-AppVClientPackage hoping it would clear the cache (just as in 4.6), they are effectively gone but they show as installed in software center. Tried a computer policy refresh (they
are published to computer) but no change.
Please advise on this + what is the proper way to correct this problem in general (1 app-v that won't start on 1 server, whereas the App-v application is ok)?
    J.
    Jan Hoedt

Don't have the message anymore and cannot reproduce it. Never mind, you can close this post.
Packages are getting through after a reboot. I was only looking for an easy way to repair app-v packages, the powershell can do that but it does not refresh it directly, a reboot was necessary.
    Jan Hoedt
Your best bet is to run a repair from the App-V console on the client. If you are using App-V 5.0 SP2+ then download the UI and run the repair

  • Disk Diagnostics won't work...

    Hello.
    I'm on a MacBook Air - 2014 which brought installed OS X Mavericks 10.9.4.
The day after buying it, I installed OS X Yosemite. Then I erased it's SDD! I installed OS X Yosemite again, via internet!
Apple Disc Diagnostics doesn't work! I used every information I could obtain from Apple's website, but it still soonest work! Not by pressing 'D' will my Mac boots.
I created a partition and installed OS X Mavericks 10.9.5. I decided to use Disk Diagnostics with it, but still it didn't work!
Could this be a bug?! If yes, how could I repair it? I don't have any problem with my Mac, I just wanted to use Disk Diagnostics for the first time!
Thank you for any help you may give me.
    All the best.

  • Verify disk / repair Do not work....

    Hi,
Well, I'm trying to use disk utility to keep my machine working ok. So I will tell how l'm doing it.
    1) First l verify disk disk permissions ( that works ok )
    2) If necessery I repair the disk pemissions ( that's ok too )
    3) Now l trying to verify Disk. It do not go well and i got this message:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
    Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume The volume sh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked

    4) Now I can't use he Repair Disk option ( it's off ) I can Repair the Disk Permissions again, but it do not fix my problem.

    4) Now I can't use he Repair Disk option ( it's off )
I can Repair the Disk Permissions again, but it do
    not fix my problem.
You can't repair a disk that you're booted from. If you boot from another drive or your install disk, you can then use Disk Utility to repair your internal drive.
    1) First l verify disk disk permissions ( that works
    ok )
    2) If necessery I repair the disk pemissions (
    that's ok too )
Step 1 is a waste of time. Don't Verify Permissions, just run Repair Permissions and it will both verify and repair in one step.

You should get TechTool Pro or Diskwarrior or both. Diskwarrior is highly recommended as a specialized disk utility program. TechTool Pro is an excellent disk utility as well, but it also has a lot of other test and features.

  • Had a trial version, now trying to install full version from disk and won't work

I am now trying to install a full version of Aperture 3.0 from a disk after having a trial version downloaded a few months ago.  Everything goes fine until I click on the icon after installation.  A box comes up asking for serial number to upgrade the trial version, but says that it is invalid after I enter it.  Product was purchased directly from Apple, so it is a valid disk.  I have deleted all the accompanied files that I can find that were on the computer prior to having the full version.  What else should/can I do to get this to work?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
I have deleted all the accompanied files that I can find that were on the computer prior to having the full version.
Did you deinstall all of the files mentioned here?
Re: Aperture Removed...still wants to update
And afterwards open a terminal window (the Terminal is in Applications -> Utilities)
    and type the following command:
           sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.Aperture
You will need to enter your admin password.
Then try again to install your boxed Aperture 3 version.

  • Sturtup Repair won't work

I have an HP Pavilion dv 4. Some time ago the battery failed and I haven't bought a new one yet so I've been using it without one, just plugging the laptop in. the irritating part is that the charger unplugs sometimes, accidently, and I have to start the laptop again. So here is my problem. Last night I turned my laptop on and as I was listening to the Avast Antivirus voice saying that it has been updated....the charger unplugged accidently and I had to plug it in again. But the laptop wouldn't start. A black screen appeared and gave me two options, either to start the safe mode or ( recommended) launch a startup repair. I chose the safe mode but it said it couldn't start and so I tried the Startup repair. It was taking more than 30 min and I had to leave so I just shut everything down thou I know it was not the best thing to do. Now, today I tried to turn the laptop on and the same thing happened. so I have been staring at the blue screen for more than two hours now. There's a window saying that my computer was unable to start and Startup repair is checking the system for problems. it also says that it might take several minutes...but the flashing line saying "attempting repairs" has been running for more than 2 hours! What am I supposed to do? Thanks.

  • Repair Disk  / Repair Permissions -- which first

If I want to run repair permissions or repair disk, which should I do first?
    Does it matter?

"Repair disk" makes modifications to the structure of data on the disk itself. If there is an error, this really needs to be done first since the errors could manifest themselves as botched permissions, mangled files, etc. If the disk's integrity is actually compromised, the highest priority is to repair it. One thing to keep in mind is that certain repairs cannot be made on a mounted disk (such as the one you boot from), so for the disk repair procedure to work, you should boot of another disk (your OS installation disk, a bootable external hard disk, etc.). Even then, Apple's disk repair is curiously basic -- there's many errors it simply does not detect or fix and for that you need something like DiskWarrior. Mind you, disk errors like that shouldn't occur, and if they do you may have hardware issues to be concerned about.
"Repair permissions" compares file ownership and permissions in a directory to a list stored in the package bundles in /Library/Receipts. If there's a difference between what it finds in the file list stored in the receipt package, and the files on disk, it attempts to set the permissions and ownership of the file to what appears in the list (which should reflect the state of the file when installed). It doesn't do anything at all to preferences, user preferences, user files, logs, file created after and application is installed, etc.
Contrary to popular belief, repairing permissions doesn't generally do much for you. It should be pretty rare that it finds a difference unless you've really been mucking about, and generally when it does find something it's either because you explicitly changed the permissions or because there's some other problem where an application or disk issue is changing the permissions. The one time where it really makes sense, actually, is after you repair a disk issue.
It's common advice that people tell you to repair permissions as a step to address problems, but mostly because it's an easy thing to do. Similarly, zapping your PRAM is frequently advised when trouble-shooting, though the process of a cold-boot (complete power-off, then power back on a few seconds later) is generally the portion of that procedure that actually produces the desired result.

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.

  • Disk Utility - Won't Repair Flash/Thumb Drive

So my Mac froze for some reason, while my Kingston thumb/flash drive was in. I tried to eject it, but I could only force eject (which it said may cause issues). After that, whenever I put the thumb drive in, it said something like the drive won't work and I had to copy the files to my desktop. When I go into disk utility and click repair disk, it says this:  "Disk Utility stopped repairing “UNTITLED 1”: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
I can't erase the thumbdrive, because it says I need a source, which I don't know what that means.
Can anybody help? The files are useless now as I have transferred them to a CD, so I'm fine with erasing the whole thing. And yes, I know I can get a new on at any store for cheap, but I'd like to know if this can be repaired. Thanks.

You haven't mentioned how the thumb drive was formatted to begin with; is it GUID partition map and Mac OS Extended (Journalled), or is it FAT 32 with MBR partition map?
If it's the latter, DU can't repair it, but should be able to format it. However, the forced ejection may have damaged the file system to prevent that.
If it's FAT32, re-format it on a PC and try again on the Mac.
If it's Mac formatted, you could try erasing and reformatting on another Mac (or as Hackintosh says, from the DVD), but if that doesn't work, try the PC route; reformat to FAT32 on a PC (if the PC will recognise it - thay don't always), then go back to the Mac, repartition and format.
If that fails, it's recycling fodder.
