Disk Restoration

My external hard drive that held my photos and RAW files dies.  Luckily I had everything (except for 1 days worth) backed up on another external disk.  I have purchased a replacement drive.  My question is....once the replacement drive arrives do I have Windows give it the same drive name as the prior drive and copy all the backed up files to it....if I do that and open Lightroom how do I make all the files appear as if they were already imported (which they were)?  I guess what I am asking is do I have to do anything special to fool Lightroom into thinking the new disk is the old disk?
Howard

So it sounds like the best approach would be to copy all the files over to the disk and delete the xmp files that get copied over leaving just the RAW files themselves and then reassociate with the Lightroom catalog...is that right?
You may leave the xmp's alone, don't worry. They are just a copy of your catalog data, that may be in sync or out of sync with your catalog. What's in  them doen't matter unless you do Read Metadata for any of your images.
Just curious, what would happen if the xmp files were not deleted, would the modifications in Lightroom that were made after the disk died (the Lightroom catalog is, indeed, not on the dead disk) take precedance over the copied and old xmp files?
Yes.
How does Lightroom know which instructions to follow...is it based on the date the modification was made.
Catalog only. If you want instructions from xmp to be followed, you should Read Metadata into catalog.
Would the old copied xmp files be overwritten with the ones in the Lightroom database?
Yes, but only if you manually do Save Metadata or turn on auto-write xmp in catalog Settings. Otherwise they will stay as they are, outdated.

  • Can't install Mavericks, damaged disk, restore from Time Machine, unable to find destination disk. What to do?

    After downloading Mavericks, tried installing, it told me that I have a damaged disk and to restore from backup. Selected Time Machine's latest backup. Then I was prompted to select backup disk. My only option was the Mac HD icon with a "?" on top of it, unable to verify disk. With the "continue" button grayed out, I hit the back button a few times in an attempt to start over. I went back to the install page and it started installing. 40 minutes later it was up and running. Every thing seemed fine. I tried opening GarageBand, I got the spinning wheel. Then a prompt page asking me to select a language. I selected English and the computer shutdown. It being late and I being frustrated, I decided to wait until morning.
    On startup I got the message that I have a damaged disk and to restore from backup. Selected Time Machine's latest backup. Then I was prompted to select backup disk. This time there was no icon or anything to choose from.
    I'm wondering if I need to use my original Mac mini, Mac OS X install DVD, or is it time for a trip to the Apple store.
    Ideas and options welcome.

    It sounds as if your hard drive may have failed or may be failing. Boot your computer from the REcovery Disk by holding down the Command+R keys during the boot. From the Recovery drive you can run Disk Utility.  Once in DU select your hard drive then run "Repair Disk".
    If errors are found and repaired run Repair Disk a second time.
    If errors are found and not repaired you are going to need a more robust volume repair utiity such as DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, or Drive Genius and an external drive to boot from to run the repairs or...

    just been reading through various posts on here and it seems that timemachine does not backup file vault home folders. Thanks for the warning message apple. i have wiped my harddrive lost all my home folder and am now panicking becuase some of the data was for a charity that i help out with and can't exactly go asking for the information again. i presume if my old home folder was there i would see it in the user account on my external drives backups? any help would be appreciated but  think i am now losing the will to live.
    Cue the massive shouting match when i have to explain this to the charity secretary

  • Post Disk Restore Issues

    I have restored my disk from a backup after the previous one failed.
    Now when I open iWeb the series of pages on the left hand side are all red as if they haven't been updated.
    The fact of the matter is, if I send this off to publish it will remove some of the comments that have been put on the site since. So I tried using the "Check For New Comments" in the file menu. But it doesn't seem to be updating anything.
    What is the solution here? How do I get my site back up to date without loosing any data?

  • Desktop/Laptop System Disk Restores

    We have been using ShadowProtect 5 desktop for about 2 years now to back up individual computers in our office. We like the reliability and continuous incremental backups. Restoring systems where only the system partition is corrupted is also easy. The only thing we did not like is that, just in case we lose a hard drive, for example, the different vendor and operating system partitions had to be saved separately as full backups and then reconstructed (creating appropriate partitions and restoring each separately) manually.
    I see that the latest version is called ShadowProtect SPX. It appears to be able to save multiple partitions at the same time in the same backup file chain. Then, the Recovery Environment Cross Platform has an option to Restore Disk Layout from Image. However, it says that several types of partitions cannot be...

  • Disk Restore Shuts Computer down

    Ok, I've got the iBook g3 like the green and blue mix. I have 9.2 running on it right now but I want to completely wipe it out so I insert the Mac os 8.6 original restore disk (Orange). I hold the C button on start-up and watch it load off the CD. Now when it just shows the toolbar from the desktop and battery indicator the computer shutdowns, (screen flashes) Now I have tried the process many times and it hasn't worked. Anyone know what's up?

    Well I don't know if I can help or not but I can try. Since I am not up on OS 9 or OS8 or your iBook, I'm going to have to extrapolate from what I do know of OS X and hope that what I say will be relevant. I feel bad that you haven't been able to get any real help so far, so I will try, but in all honesty, I will be going pretty far out on a limb here.
    Not being familiar with this particular iBook, I'm not sure I entirely understand what you are doing. I gather that you want to erase your startup disk and install OS 8.6.
    I assume that you have Disk Utility. Before starting out, did you go to Disk Utility and verify the start up disk and repair if necessary? If you have Disk Utility and can do this, that would be good to do.
    As I understand it, you cannot install an older system over a newer one--you have to erase the newer system first. You can do this with Disk Utility, or your Install Disc #1 might give you that option. So you have to be sure you erase OS 9 before you try to install OS 8.6.
    After installing OS 8.6, you need to go to Disk Utility again and verify both permissions and the disk and repair if necessary.
    If you have an Apple Hardware Test it also wouldn't hurt to run that, just on general principles. Just to be sure there isn't a hardware problem giving you difficulties.
    All this is just general advice which I hope pertains to your situation and will help. If it isn't, maybe one of the more knowledgeable and experienced members of the forum will be incensed enough at what I have written to be inspired to post something more helpful to you.
    Good luck!

  • Disk Restore Error with DU (HELP!!)

    OK I created an image flawlessly or so I thought. When I went to restore and began the process, after I entered my Admin Password it looks like it will start and then I received the Error Message 'Cannot connect to helper tool' and the restore is aborted.
    I have booted to the install DVDs, an external firewire partition and the MAC HD itself same error. The external drive has a boot partition and then the images are on the second partition.
    Any help here is greatly appreciated.

    The only signed software, available for your phone, is iOS 7.0.3. That's why your attempts to restore are erroring out. If you want to update/restore, make sure you're running iTunes 11.1 or greater & do so through iTunes. iOS 7.0.3 will be installed on your phone.

  • How do I restore files backed up to time machine to a replacement storage drive? (NOT System disk)

    I've seen plenty of articles about restoring the system disk (restoring the whole system) with Time Machine, but nothing about restoring a secondary disk that has crashed.
    I've been doing backups of both the primary system disk and a secondary storage disk for 2 years. Yesterday, the secondary storage disk crashed. I have a replacement disk, now I need to restore the backup from Time Machine onto this new disk.
    Can I just copy the files from the Time Machine disk to the new one, or do I need to do something more complicated? The instructions for restoring files from Time Machine all include selecting the drive/folder you want to restore, then entering Time Machine. But I can't do that if the original disk no longer exists.
    I'm getting the replacement drive today, so I thought I would ask before I installed the drive. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Using Disk Utility To Restore

    Last month I did a Disk Restore onto my large external hard drive using Disk Utility.
    I would like to do that monthly, so as to ensure that whenever I add, change, delete data, configurations, etc. on my internal hard drive..that I have the latest restore data..plain and simple.
    My question is: In doing subsequent disk restore maneuvers on a monthly basis, do I need to manally delete the previous month's restore data from my external hard drive or will it just overwrite (like copy and replace) the current data on my ext drive?
    I don't want the restore feature to duplicate any data from previous transactions on my ext drive. That's why I am asking. Does anyone know?
    Thanks,

    Disk Utility->Help->Restoring files from a disk or disk image
    You can choose to erase the destination disk and then have the disk image copied to it. Alternatively, you can choose not to erase the disk and add the disk image information to the current contents of the destination disk.
    As I read this, if you don't erase the previous copy, when your restore, everything that's on the source will overwrite similarly named items on the destination. You cannot do incremental updates using DU's restroe function. For that, you need something like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc.

  • Help restoring disk and booting from external clone

    Yesterday I tried to boot from my external clone just to see if it was possible for me to do it. After going into sys prefs and clicking boot from clone restart, as the computer was restarting up it froze or couldnt complete the restart so i simply hit the power button and shut down. I then turned the computer back on and the computer booted from the internal hd but after start up ALL my apps that started with the letter a-i were deleted. luckily i had a clone to simply copy and paste the missing apps but i wanted to do a disk restore but the disk utility would not let me choose a destination. I also tried doing a disk restore using intego personal backup which also i had problems with doing. Could someone please give me help with restoring my disk? And also explain why all the apps were deleted?

    Butlins,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    The fixed 640x480 display resolution indicates that your external drive is missing the drivers for the eMac's video hardware. You can build the OS on the drive using the OS X install disc that came with the eMac, but that's a model-specific (gray label) disc that only has a full set of drivers for that particular Mac model. You really want to build the external drive's OS using a retail (black label) OS X Install disc that was released at or after the same time as the most recent Mac you need to be able to boot; retail OS X Install discs (should!) have the necessary drivers for all compatible Mac models released prior to that particular OS X disk.

  • How to restore (not duplicate) DB from RAC ASM to non ASM

    Hello everybody,
    i am trying to recover db from RAC+ASM to non ASM no RAC node. I am running Oracle 10g (10.2.0.4) on Win2003 Server. I have functional backup from my prod system.
    Here are my steps:
    *1. On prod server i make backup running this script in RMAN*
    configure channel device type 'SBT_TAPE' parms'SBT_LIBRARY=oracle.disksbt,ENV=(BACKUP_DIR=e:\backup)';
    RUN {
    backup device type SBT_TAPE database tag zal20081129;
    SQL 'alter system archive log current';
    backup device type SBT_TAPE archivelog ALL tag zal20081129;
    *2. I prepared clon instance on another server (The same Oracle version) and start it to nomount mode.*
    *3. I copied the backup from prod server to clon server to exactly the same path. (e:\backup)*
    *4. I connect to RMAN on my new node and I use the DBID parameter and I restore controlfile.*
    rman
    connect target /
    set DBID 3079749916
    startup nomount
    run {
    allocate CHANNEL CTAPE DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' PARMS'SBT_LIBRARY=oracle.disksbt,ENV=(BACKUP_DIR=f:\backup)';
    allocate channel CDISK DEVICE TYPE DISK;
    restore controlfile from 'f:\backup\78k91lrn_1_1';
    alter database mount;
    *5.Then I check the backup, crosscheck etc.*

    ORA-15077: could not locate ASM instance serving a required diskgroup

    So obviouslly database wants to open online logs in the path like ASM. Which is wrong. What should I do to tell database to open it according to init.ora parameters
    *.db_create_file_dest='e:\oradata\agost'
    *.db_create_online_log_dest_1='e:\oradata\agost'
    Any suggestions???
    Thanks

    Hi,
    thanks for you quick answer. But I do restore to the local file system, even if the log says:
    restoring datafile 00001 to +DATA/agost/datafile/system.272.668509367
    restoring datafile 00002 to +DATA/agost/datafile/undotbs1.273.668509387 .....
    all the datafiles are correctly restored. I think oracle uses the parameter db_create_file_dest and creates the files there.
    I tried also the script with SET NEW NAME:
    run {
    Set newname for datafile 1 to 'e:\oradata\AGOST\system.272.668509367';
    Set newname for datafile 2 to 'e:\oradata\AGOST\undotbs1.273.668509387';

    dont know what to do.
    There must be way how to recover it. I think my first try (without SET NEWNAME) is closer to the end, there is only need to "repair" the online logs.
    Any other suggestions?
    thanks

  • The disk could not be read from or written to.  Please help.

    I don't understand why this is not working for me. Let me explain... I have two iPods, one is a 1st Gen and the other one is a Video one. Every time I tried to add music to the 1st Gen iPod I get a message that says - "Attempting to copy to the disk "NameOfiPod" failed. This disk could not be read from or written to." - but when I add music to the iPod Video it goes really smooth without any problems.
    I read the following article and to be honest I didn't find an answer to this issue. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301267
    I checked the list to make sure everything is on point:
    1. Outdated operating system software
    - I'm up to date
    2. Computer needs updates
    - Again, everything is up to date
    3. Software interference
    - No software has been installed lately
    4. Damaged files
    - I've tried many and same thing happenes
    5. Damaged disk structure
    - Everything appears to be OK.
    6. To repair your computer's hard disk
    - No errors or damaged files
    7. To repair an iPod disk
    - Restored it using latest iPod Updater
    8. Corrupt iPod photo Cache
    - Don't have that, this is a 1st Gen iPod
    9. Lost connection
    - No connection drop
    10. Bad hardware
    - I use the same USB cable for both iPods
    I just don't know what to do next. Let me know if anyone else has another idea.
    Thanks a lot in advance!

    OK! I found what the problem was. It seems that the 1st Gen iPod does not like to be plugged to the front USB port on my G5, weird because my iPod Video has not complained a bit about it. As soon as I plugged the USB cable to one of the back ports it worked flawless. Dragged and dropped my music on it and it went straight in without any errors. Nice, huh?
    Thanks though to those who tried to help me.

  • How can i fix this for my iPhone4? "attempting to copy to the disk "iPhone" failed because the disk could not be read from or written to. "

    i keep gettign this message when trying to drag music in itunes.
    attempting to copy to the disk "iPhone" failed because the disk could not be read from or written to.

    Can apply to iPhone as well >    'Disk cannot be read from or written to' when syncing iPod or 'Firmware update failure' error when updating or restoring iPod
    If you are using a Windows based computer >  iTunes for Windows: Gathering and using iTunes Diagnostics
    Ignore:  To repair an iPod disk—Restore the iPod or iPod shuffle using the latest version of iTunes.
