Disk sharing and multiple users...
Hi,
I've my hard-drive connected to my Airport Extreme base station, to which I access from a Snow Leopard. The connection works properly and I can access the disk. Happily.
I have two users (let's say "toto" and "tata") on my Snow Leopard who I want to have full access to the drive. It is possible, but I have to mount the disk twice (once per users). The mounting points are created in this order:
- /Volume/Disk
- /Volume/Disk-1
The access rights for both are 700 which means that one user can not access to the mounted point of the other. Furthermore, the mounted points are decided in the order the disk are mounted, which means we never know whose are "Disk" or "Disk-1".
This situation is very problematic with software like iTunes, which can not find its files if the mount point is not the expected one.
The workaround I have found is to allow full access (777) to guest users on my disk (and filter MAC addresses on the station), but this only allows "tata" to access to the mounting point of "toto" ("tata" would mount the Drive at "/Volumes/Disk-1" anyway).
Regarding this issue, I have two questions:
- is it possible to make MacOSX mount the disk with 770 permissions ?
- is it possible to force both accounts to use the same mount point "/Volume/Disk" ?
Thank you !!
Greetings,
TimeMachine will therefore backup the whole sparseimage
Correct you are. Thats the character of disk images. They are one "document" that contains many items. TimeMachine does not see inside the image so it has to backup the entire file.
So does anyone have a good idea for a solution?
Stop using the sparseimage.
Put your iTunes library and iPhoto library an external drive as that sharing article suggests (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198). Then use a second hard drive to backup both your computer and your 1st hard drive. Not only will you be able to access this iTunes library and iPhoto library from other user accounts but you can free up hard drive space on your system. Downside is you must have the 1st hard drive plugged into your system to access iTunes / iPhoto.

Home Sharing and multiple Users
We have one Mac with one user (me) and another Mac with two other users. If we have Home Sharing turned on for all three users, should each user be able to see the other two iTunes libraries, or will only the currently logged in user on the 2-user computer be available? Example: If User 1 is logged in, can they get User 2's library, and can I get both User 1's and User 2's libraries from the other computer?
And does iTunes have to be launched on a given computer for its library to show up on another computer, or will my iTunes find the library where it resides on the other computer even if their iTunes is not on?It is not really practical for multiple users on different PCs to use the same library database. This is because the iTunes database is not multiuser, the can however share the same content files.
So each PC will need it's own library database (iTunes Library.itl) which in this case is best located on the users own PC.
Utilities such as Tune ranger can keep libraries in sync:

For backup, some people find synctoy a free utility from Microsoft works for them.

Screen sharing and multiple users
I have an iMac at home that is used by multiple family members. I have multiple logins enable so it is common to have 2-3 accounts logged in at once. I would like to use screen sharing to connect to my account even when one of the kids is logged into their account.
I started by looking at the vnc processes. There is one process that run as root:
root 21792 0.0 0.0 2437128 1736 ?? Ss 12:25PM 0:00.02 /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Su pport/RFBRegisterMDNS
Then there is another process for each person logged in:
username 22006 0.0 0.3 2734876 13964 ?? S 12:33PM 0:00.29 /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Ma cOS/AppleVNCServer
So I have two questions. One is how can there be three processes running that listen on the same 5900 port at the same time and how does it decide which one to connect a vnc client to? My second question is how can I prevent the AppleVNCServer process from starting for each user. I've tried killing those processes but they respawn immediately.Hi
Thank you for your answer. Sorry to have been unclear - I'll give it another go :o)
Here is what I am trying to do:
I have 2 users (Plex and Ursus) that I want to have logged on at the same time. Plex will be "in the front" i.e. that is the screen that is seen if you are at the mini. Ursus is a user that is logged on but you cannot currently see (i.e. in the back as it where). I would like to work using the user Ursus (to, for example, rip a movie from a DVD (that I own of course :o).
Using file sharing would mean that I have 2 machines running and that I need to copy all the files from the one machine to the other, not exactly what I want but manageable.
I have managed to get this "partly" working - I am using Vine Server for Mac (http://www.testplant.com/products/vineserver/OSX) which allows me to start a VNC server on e.g. port 5901 and then screen share to that session. If I setup the second user (Ursus in this case) to use this server then I can connect to the "back" user. The only problem being that Vine Server seems to crash with Plex - as soon as I start it Plex just hangs and randomly crashes!
Was that clearer?
Thanks again

Hello, I have iMac Itel i3, from Oct, 2010 and have OS 10.6.7 and multiple users.
About 3-4 days ago the Mail icon in dock had question mark and was accidently removed, along with program on my user. Oops.
1. Mail 4.4 is on other users and works fine, but for me it does not work and tells me V4.3 does not work with latest OS X.
2. I reloaded software from my user with original disks (Oct, 2010) and got Mail 4.3 again. Mail 4.3 did not work with latest OS. I am unable to load Mail. Gives Yellow error message.
" You have Mail version 4.3 (1081/1084). It can’t be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.7 (Build 10J869). For more information, click the Help button."
3. Tried to update software and look for update for mail 4.3 on Apple site to no success.
Hate to go to MS-Entorage ( I may need to learn something new and alien) mail program since contracts are in Mail/Address Book.
Ideas?
MattDeedsMatt,
I would download and run the 10.6.7 combo update.

File sharing with multiple users on one Mac
I have two Macs, both of which ca seen each other across the network. My question regards file sharing with multiple users on the same computer. When file sharing, are the files from all users available across the network, or just those of the user presently logged in? The issue is that I am trying to access files from a user who isn't currently logged in, but another user on that computer is. I need to get into that person's documents, but I don't see a way to navigate to their documents folder.
Right, I got that. But the computer is in constant use by User A, while I need access to User B's files. I could need access at anytime, and it would be a pain to make User A log off and log in as User B everytime. I was just wondering if there is anyway to access User B's files in this situation, without logging User B in.

Dear All,
My database is 11gR1 and Linux is the platform.
I have more then 50 very important tables and around 15 database users.
I want to implement fine grained auditing on these important tables.
This is how I am going to implement it:
SQL>BEGIN
DBMS_FGA.add_policy(
object_schema => 'Scott',
object_name => 'SAL',
policy_name => 'SALARY_CHK_AUDIT',
audit_condition => NULL,
handler_schema => 'imran',
statement_types => 'SELECT,INSERT,UPDATE,DELETE',
audit_column => NULL);
END;
what is i have to pass multiple tables in object_schema and multiple users in handler_schema.
I hope i am able to clear my question, any doubts please let me know.
Regards, ImranHi,
object_schema - The schema of the object to be audited. (If NULL, the current log-on user schema is assumed.)
in case if you like to audit for multiple users - then try to test by holding a null value and test access the important tables -where the relevant auditing records are generated as per your requirement or not. i have not tested.. try it

One Projector with shared casts and Multiple Users
I created a training program that was originally meant for
one user at a time. Now the client wants to
install the app on a network and have multiple users run the
same projector. When this is tested, an error comes up saying
that
a shared cast is already open by another user and will not allow
anyone else to run the app at the same time.
I was told there was a work around for this but have not been
able to track it down in the forums yet. If you know the solution,
please hit me back as soon as possible as you can imagine I am in
the hot seat. ;)
either hit me back here, OR directly at my email address:

Thanks!Make sure that the projector file and all the external casts
are set to
read-only. Then multiple users should be able to share them

File sharing across multiple user accounts on the same machine
Hello,
I try to figure out how multiple users (my wife and I) on the same mac can have equal access to files on the local drive without granting that access to all users on that machine or even the rest of the world.
My research sofar hasn't come up with a satisfying solution. Here are the solutions that I am looking at:
1. Enable a permission system that ensures access to both users in all cases (file/directory creation, copy and move).
I only found a suitable solution for creating and copying files/directories but not for moving them.
See the following articles for reference:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/20787617#20787617 Setting up a shared structure that works e.g. for iPhoto Library but not for moving files to and from
https://discussions.apple.com/message/4005647#4005647 Helpful information on POSIX Permissions, ACL's an Permission inheritance
This would be my first choice if I can get around the problem of moving files...
2. Disk Image
Create a disk image which ignores persmissions and set permissions for the file that contains the image instead.
Read this article to get further details: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
This solution will work but has a few disadvatages:
There's no mutual access from multiple user accounts since an image may only be mounted by one user at a time.
One has to create a startup script that mounts the image upon login which would create a first come first serve for access to the image content.
3. Using a file sharing protocol (e.g. afp or smb) locally.
The idea behind it is to have a server providing the files mutually to multiple users one the same machine. At them moment this seems to be the most promising approach to me.
Unfortunately I can get acces from another machine but not from the same machine. Has anyone ever tried to access the file sharing (afp or smb) from the same machine on which the server is located?
Has anyone got some helpful hints for me?
Thanks in advance.Sorry, but you didn't specify details, and it was worth checking whether or not you had overlooked this approach.
The problem you're having (as I suppose you already know) is that any new disk item inherits the permissions of the folder it is originally created in in. These permissions (sensibly enough) need owner or administrator permission to change once they've been established; that will happen when you copy a file to a new location (because that's essentially creating a new file) but not when you move it. any of the following would work:
changing the permissions on newly created files for both users so that they all explicitly give r/w access to a particular group.
writing a droplet that would change the permissions of files dropped on it and move them programmatically to the shared folder
set up a folder action or launchd job that would watch the shared folder and automatically convert permissions on files placed in it.
The last would be the approach I would take, but... which appeals to you? -
Printing Issues with HP D145 and multiple users from G5
Hi - I've a HP D145 All-In-One connected via USB to a G5 (as described below). The machine has multiple accounts on for different members of my family. The printer is directly connected to the G5 via USB connection but is shared with other Macs. Printing has become increasingly difficult, and we now have the following problems:
1. Printing will only work from the administrators account.
2. Printing periodically (daily, generally after a few hours of use) stops from the administrators account
Solutions tried:
a. Check set up for the non-administrators accounts....Looks OK for printing
b. When printing stops - I've tried repairing the permissions with the Disk Utility. This no longer works.
c. Run Printer Setup Repair (with option to repair all user accounts) - Works for the administrators account providing the computer and printer are restarted, otherwise no effect.
d. Reinstalling the software - No effect
It’s beginning to look like I need to replace this printer with one that works.
You can help me in two ways - how to solve the printer problems, or alternatively suggest a colour All-in-One printer that can work with multiple accounts and does not have the problems mentioned above.
Many thanks in advance,
Regards,
MelvynBelow I've copied the fix HP proposed and some additional information that they have sent me.

Sincerely,
2. The reasons why it may not have worked:
We need to be sure that you are fully logging out of one account and
then back into the next. The fast user switching feature of the Mac OS
can create problems with our printer drivers. For this reason, fast user
switching is not supported by HP.
The other issue we may be running into would be the Mac OS itself. Over
the past few months the Mac OS has gone through several updates. When
the 10.4.4 version was released it created some issues with our existing
software. An updated version of our software has been developed which
works well with 10.4.4 and higher, but it is not available for this
printer.
It may be that as each new OS update is installed on your computers that
the issue becomes worse. If you are running the Mac OS 10.4.3 or lower
then the version 7.3.1 of our software should work fine. If it is 10.4.4
or higher there will be some issues as the new OS versions do not seem
to like the older drivers.
I would have to recommend retrying the full uninstall the Derek had
outlined. This time however, just install the downloaded 7.3.1 software
from our web site for the D145. Once it has been installed we need to
test it fully without adding the scanjet software. I am hoping that
without both version of our software installed it may work better.
This should resolve the issue. If you need further assistance, please
reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further.
3. The repsonse to questions on switching and OS X 10.4.4
You are correct, since you are running the 10.4.4 I cannot guarantee
that the older software version will allow full functionality. It should
allow for printing and as long as you avoid the fast user switching,
when trying to print, it should keep working well.
I understand the convenience of fast user switching but you will have to
log completely out of one user, and then log properly into the next
before you can expect the printer to function.
I would still recommend trying the steps I had outlined as it really is
the only thing you can do that may work.

Jdeveloper Subversion and Multiple users
I am working with jdeveloper 11.1.1.7 and have a java project that I have been working on. The subversion repository is located on my network drive (backed up). Now that it is in production, I want to place it on a drive where other developers can access it. We use the integrated tools within Jdeveloper to update the repository. This is the URL file:///u:/XML_Processing_svn
I did so, and the other developer was able to connect to the repository, check out the project, but when they make changes and try to commit their changes, the commit gui just hangs and then it shows an error -- was not able to copy it, but it had Previously reported error [java.nio.channels.OverlappingFileLockException in o.ji.vcs.svn.op.SVNOperationCommit:441]
I tried several things:
1. Copying the subversion repository to their personal network drive where they were the only user -- same problem
2. Copying the subversion repository directory to their personal C drive and they CAN update the repository.
3. Copying from their C drive subversion repository directory back down to their Personal Network drive and then trying that -- it worked
4. I just tried one more thing -- I copied the C drive subversion repository directory to a shared network drive. After checking out and updating a file, NOT able to commit!
I would understand if the file-based system would "choke" if two people were trying to write to the same repository due to file io conflicts, but the whole idea of a repository is that everyone can access. At minimum, I would expect that two developers should be able to access the repository if only one were accessing it at the same time.
Is it possible to have multiple users on a file-based repository, or do we have to go the route of hosting the repository in a proxy server?
Thank you for any insight!
Stuart
Points will be awarded as generously as this site allows!Hi Stuart,
I use JDeveloper in a team with Subversion. We are using Windows 7 for the clients and linux hosted SVN repository. Haven't had any problems with this setup.
I noticed there's an SVNKit bug that sounds similar to your problem. Is your colleague using a Mac or is the repository hosted on a FAT32 disk?

The JDeveloper Subversion module uses SVNKit.

IPhoto 08, Leopard and multiple users
I just installed Leopard. Under Tiger, I have tried unsuccesfully to share my IPhoto library with other users on my computer. In particular, I tried article 304890: "iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users". Has anything changed with Leopard ?
Thank you so much.
CescoMany people using the Shared Folder find that they have permissions issues which mean that they 'other' user can't see some part of the Library. Therefore, if you want to share the Library in that way it's best moved to an external disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and set to ignore ownership and permissions.
can both users add photos from their iPhones via iPhoto on their respective accounts and have the new photos show up on the other users iPhoto app?
Yes.
would the newly added photos sharing be automaticall be set to the folder sharing settings? ie, view and edit for both users?
Yes.
if i edit the photos with say photoshop, will the changes show up in iphoto?
If you set this up corrrectly - You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
You will need to do this in both accounts.
would timemachine back the data up automatically?
TM can be set to back up externals. There are other options too, of course.
when I upgrade to a new computer will everything work the same.
Yes. Just plug in the extenal and point iPhoto at the external from the new machine.

Is Screen Sharing with multiple users possible?
I am trying to discuss some documents with multiple users. It works very well with just two users sharing the screen of one of them, so I was wondering if there was a way to have a third user participating. If iChat does not allow this, does anyone know a different software solution?
Thanks

The event library and multiple users in the classroom
Is there any way I can stop the event library loading old footage or footage from another project in imovie. Is there any way i can have 3 or 4 movies on the go in separate files.
I have ten macbooks for my class of thrity kids. We have two users on the computer Admin and Student. All students use the student side, every time imovie opens it gets old footage and events from iphoto and by the end of each term there is 8 to 10 gigs of footage on the go at any one time. imovie HD allowed save, file open and movement of movies. imovie 08/09 seems brilliant for snow boarders and you tubers but not the classroom. Really we would love an editing package that allows attachment of camera and work for a couple of weeks on a project while others do the same thing on the same mac. Please don't suggest multiple users we have over 200 macs and 600 students.Without multiuser, the only of having an exclusive event library for each student would be either external drive, or a blank disk image to store iMovie events. I can imagine a large network drive that has 50GB size disk images for each students. You mount your image to work with your footage.
By the way you can move event library to other drive within iMovie, so you can back up and disconnect external drive to unclutter event library. -
[Urgent]Accidently disabled shared mailbox (multiple users)
I am a beginner and accidently run "Remove-Mailbox..." instead of "Set-Mailbox..." while modifying user's access to a shared mailbox. Now I want to know, since multiple users had access to the shared mailbox, do we need to provide access
to every user on the shared mailbox again, after reconnecting the shared mailbox to the account ?
I am working on exchange server 2010.
Thanks in advance..
AlokHi ,
I hope below mentioned points will help you to resolve this issue.
Please do this first in your test environment before get in to production.
On my side i would assume like you are having windows server 2008 R2 active directory environment with recycle bin enabled otherwise you have to do authoritative restore in active directory to get back the deleted user account in active directory .
Step 1:
First you need to restore the active directory account with the help of recycle bin feature in active directory .
As per my knowledge ,recycle bin feature will help us to retain the same permissions on other resources and group membership when the deleted account is been recovered .
Note :From windows server 2008 R2 on wards recycle bin feature is available ,once you enable that you cannot able to disable the feature so please think twice before doing any changes on recycle bin .Same time you need ensure the required functional levels
are present in active directory for enabling the recycle bin.
Reference Article for Recycle Bin in Active directory :
http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2009/08/27/the-ad-recycle-bin-understanding-implementing-best-practices-and-troubleshooting.aspx
Step 2: Then you need to reconnect the shared mailbox from the exchange disconnector container to the restored account in active directory.
Note : Suddenly deleted mailbox will not show on the exchange disconnected container So we need to use the below commands to update the exchange databases .
Commands :
Get-MailboxStatistics -Database MDB02 | ForEach { Update-StoreMailboxState -Database $_.Database -Identity $_.MailboxGuid -Confirm:$false }
Get-MailboxStatistics -Database MDB02 | Where { $_.DisconnectReason -ne $null } | ForEach { Update-StoreMailboxState -Database $_.Database -Identity $_.MailboxGuid -Confirm:$false }
Please reply me if you have any queries .

Final Cut and multiple user accounts
Hi all.
I've got Final Cut Studio 5.1.4 installed and just setup a separate account on my PowerPC G5 running Mac OS X ver 10.4.9.
When I run Final Cut from my original account it loads fine. When I run it from the new user account (that I went ahead and set to Admin) it starts to run (shows splash screen) then exits.
I re-installed all of the Final Cut discs from the new account hoping this would address the issue but same thing happens: Final Cut starts to run then exits.
According to the Support page you can have multiple users on a machine using Final Cut.
What am I missing?
Thank you.
