Disk size and backups

Hello
I wander what is required disk size on hana when migrating from e.g Oracle to Hana?
E.g under oracle I have 1Tb database (and something more if I backup also at OS level)
What will I have under Hana ? How much to backup?
Thank you a lot
Jan

Dear Jan,
The first thing we need to perform before migrating from AnyDb to HANA is memory sizing. SAP provides specific notes for memory sizing of different SAP Applications as mentioned bel     ow
1793345 - Sizing for SAP Suite on HANA
1637145 - SAP BW on HANA: Sizing SAP In-Memory Database
1872170 - Suite on HANA memory sizing
1736976 - Sizing Report for BW on HANA
The objective if the the above is to get the footprint of uncompressed DATA in AnyDB.
That forms one of the parameter for sizing the HANA DB.
Based on this sizing information one would use the suitable T-Shirt sized HANA Appliance from the hardware vendor. We then have to apply the
Traditional the RAM should be atleast 2x(uncompressed_DB / Compression factor) and the Disk space would be at least 3-4xRAM for persisitance layer and 1xRAM for logs.
The compression factor might be around 4-7 times depending on the type SAP application.

Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
Restart your Mac after freeing up disk space then check Stoage again.
Another way to view avialable space:
Control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop then click Get Info.
In the Get Info panel you'll see:  Available & Capacity
Again, make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

  • Disk failure and Backup procedures

tl;dr: recommendations for data recovery software on a failing hard drive?
    Hello Forum,
I have a PC with two drives, an 1TB HD with /home mounted on it and a 40GB SSD with everything else.
At some point working on a document, I had trouble saving it and the applications started to stutter. I immediately checked dmesg wich returned a bunch of errors so I proceeded to turn off the machine.
I disconnected the /home HD and I can boot in "emergency mode" as root. The relevant system logs ( # journalctl --since=2013-01-29 | grep sdb) show as much as 50 times per second the following lines:
sd 3:0:1:0: [sdb] Unhandled error code
    sd 3:0:1:0: [sdb]
    sd 3:0:1:0: [sdb] CDB:
Also, when it all started, there were a lot of lines mentioning
Buffer I/O error on device sdb3, logical block 7555XXXX
Where XXXX just kept increasing one by one.
Is that sure sign of a physical failure or can these symptoms arise from other causes?
As I am presuming a physical failure, I am planning to buy tomorrow another HD of the same size and try to recover the maximum possible amount of data. I have read on the Internet that the first thing would be to try to image it, maybe using several runs of an imaging software.
Do you know of a good software to do this type of work?
    Cheers,
    -- adelgado

First: Boot from a live-cd, to prevent unnecessary mounting of your disks (System Rescue CD comes with ddrescue).
"dd" is usually recommended for imaging. However, you might want to take a look at ddrescue instead. ddrescue is more resistant to read-errors, and I higly recommend using its log-feature - Take a look at its homepage.
Here's a bit more about imaging hard drives with ddrescue.
NB: There is another program called dd_rescue, which I have no experience with.

  • Difference in DB size and backup size

    Hi,
I work on a backup/recovery product and in that I am into testing of SAP HANA backup/recovery using my third party backup tool.
I have 4node(3+1) HANA setup with a total of 1.5TB RAM. I have created a DB of 1TB DB. I use this for testing backup performance of DB. As for backup persistent data is taken from the disk storage (shared in case of multi node setup) I want to know the size of DB on disks. When I use the following command to check the size of DB "select sum(allocated_page_size) from M_CONVERTER_STATISTICS" I get a size of around 950-970GB, which I feel is correct. But when I take backup of the same DB the backup size will be around 2TB. My log is in "OVERWRITE" state, so logs have some data as a duplicate copy is also ruled out.
Request you to help me understand the reason for this difference in DB size on disk and in backup.
    Thanks,
    Prasanna

My best guess is that MAX_SIZE is the total number of extents used for any purpose, whereas MAX_SORT_SIZE is the total number of extents ever used for sorting.
Consider that temporary segments can be used for things other than sorting. Some examples are temporary LOB handling, backing storage for temporary tables, hashing, merging bitmaps, etc.
    Hope that helps,

  • CSV disk signature and backup

I would like to be able to take a snapshot backup of a CSV directly from my SAN and mount it back into the cluster in orer to recover files.
Right now, if i do this, the cluster detects the disk as a CSV (presumably a pre-existing CSV), i guess there is a signature on the disk identifying it as a particular cluster shared volume. This makes perfect sense.
Is there some way of remove this signature\ID, to ostensibly allow me to have two copies if the same disk mounted at any one time? I.e. one as CSV, which remains unaffected and in use, and one as a 'normal' disk which i can mount and assign a drive letter
    to?
    Cheers.

Mount the disk on a standalone system and use diskpart to change the signature, then mount the disk with the changed signature on the cluster.
    DISKPART> list disk
DISKPART> uniqueid disk (get current signature)
    DISKPART> select disk ID
    DISKPART> uniqueid disk ID=[NEW SIGNATURE]

  • Database size and backups

I have deleted a large number of records from a database which accounted for much of the space being used as it was not needed at this time. When I take a backup of the database will the size of the db I then restore from this backup be reduced or should
I shrink the database first. Didn't want to have to perform a shrink operation if not necessary as I've seen posts that it affects performance.
    Thanks
    Robert

If you have deleted chunks of data and take the backup the size of the backup will be reduced. However if you want to release the unused space from the running database(with out backup and restore), you could do a shrink

  • Encrypted Disk Image and Backup

If one uses Apple’s Disk Utility to create an encrypted disk image, what happens when SuperDuper, Time Machine, or any other backup utility is running while the (unencrypted) image is mounted on the desktop?
Are both the encrypted image and the unencrypted data transferred to the backup device? Or is just the secure encrypted data copied to the destination?
Nothing urgent on this, just curious. Thank you!

I've played around with this a little. As best I can tell, when cloning an entire HD volume both CCC and SuperDuper will always copy an image file (.dmg, .sparsebundle, etc) that resides that on that HD, whether or not that file's disk image is mounted at the time. However the contents of the mounted disk image volume will not be copied separately, and so If the disk image is encrypted, no unencrypted content will get transferred this way. However as mentioned in the SuperDuper link above, it's better to unmount the image in any event, in order to ensure that the underlying .dmg or .sparsebundle file gets copied faithfully.
If you want to copy the contents of a mounted disk image with CCC or SuperDuper, you can do so as a completely separate procedure from copying the HD. If you first mount the image (giving a password if it was encrypted), that mounted image will appear as an independent volume in the "source list" of CCC or SuperDuper, and you can choose that volume as a source for the copy procedure. You would need to designate a different target volume as well, so as not to overwrite your HD clone. If the disk image was encrypted and you deliberately copy its mounted image separately in this fashion, the resulting files on the target will not be encrypted.

  • Disk Image and Backups

I need an expert response here... I need it to be objective as possible to the goal that I am trying to accomplish and that is the following. I want to be able to create a system backup wherever I am in the world in as short a period of time without the install DVD's. What is the best way?
For example can I create a disk image of my hard drive using Disk Utility? If so, and I encounter a catastrophic failure, and I have that disk image on DVD or a external FireWire drive could I just reload that image and then be back up and running? If that is true, what would be the process using Disk Utility to create that image and the process to restore it as well? Please provide as detailed info as possible about the process?
Now I do regular backups using Time Machine. But does Time Machine afford me the same opportunity as a disk image? For example if I encounter a failure, can the external drive that I am using for Time Machine create a complete system restore without the install DVD? Or is the disk image the only way?
I do understand that with the disk image I would always have to be updating it to make sure I have the latest files. However, as it stands right now, I have all essential files that I would need already on my hard drive ready for the disk image if that is the way to go. All my other files would be on my iDisk or external Hard Drive. I appreciate anyone who can shed some light here.
I did some digging on the support.apple.com site and I also wondered will I always need the install DVD to get to Disk Utility or is there another way with the DVD?

What you will always need to run Disk Utility is:
    1. A functioning OS
    2. A copy of Disk Utility on accessible media
Put another way, Disk Utility is an application. No application can stand alone -- they all depend on an operating system being up & running to supply the essential services they need.
This means you can't just "reload" an image without first booting into a working OS from some source. This could be the installer DVD, a flash drive with the OS installed on it, or an external drive. It can't be the internal drive if it has problems.
Since you have to have a separate source for both the OS & Disk Utility, you might as well consider the clone option already mentioned. The downside is that this requires a large enough external drive to hold everything, so a cheap flash drive probably won't suffice. The upside is you don't have to image or restore anything -- just boot from the clone & keep working, repairing/restoring the internal drive whenever it is convenient.

  • Disk size and privacy

    Hi,
I have sign up for azure free trial. I created VM windows sever 2008. By default, I got two partition,
C and D with about 100 GB space.
I downloaded about 20-30 GB data using server, and next day someone was using my server (guess microsoft) and disable D drive, and decrease
C drive to 30 GB. And also delete application "onedrive".
Also I couldn't attach again drive D on this machine, status was "locked".. and also on C drive I could't resize 30 GB.
I was logged in on web, with websites like facebook, hotmail.. and someone was accessed to my
    VM server. Where is privacy?
If I did overload server with download or something, I could get warning, or at last lower down internet connection.. But not, someone was using my server, or know what I was doing and modify VM server disk and uninstall one or more programs.

    Hi Nedims,
I suggest you not to panic at the moment and check the operation logs for any details on Management portal under settings.
On a VM, you get 2 discs:
    OS Disk – drive C:
Temporary Storage Disk – drive D:
D:\ drive is temporary drive and prefer not to keep any data. The Temporary Storage disk is used to store temporary information. For example if you need to cache different content like pictures or documents. In the case of the restart or if something happens
with the machine, all the content of this disk is lost. Because of this you should never store data that need to be persisted on this disk. The scope of this disk is not to persist data. It won't get locked out.
Also, as stated by you regarding Privacy: Unless you disclose your VM Name, storage, IP address, User name and password to logon  publicly, no body can access your VM on azure. Data on Azure VM's are highly secured.
You can check the operation logs on Management portal and check what are the recent activities done on your VM.
    Ref: http://blog.ict.eu/2013/04/windows-azure-operation-logs/
Also, suggest you to open a support case if you still need further assistance on the data loss or security over Azure VM's.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Maximum recording time based on disk size and ram?

I read about changing the tempo and beats per measure - and hangtime posts a link re: max. time - thanks for that.
But, I'm thinking about taking my iBook w/ 1.4 processor and 512 of ram to a gig to record approximately 3 hours straight - is this going to work?
Am I limited based on free disk space as well, (which I'm not sure how much i have!)
    thanks in advance.

Well, you read HT's FAQ which tells you that GB 2 will never record for 3 hours straight.
Anyway I wouldn't use GB to record, since it's not reliable enough, I would use a plain audio editor like Audacity or Soundstudio - they are made for that purpose.
As for disk space: You need about 10 MB per Minute if you record "CD quality" (which is what GB uses). That adds up just short of 2 Gigabytes for 3 hours. Any Finder window of your hard disk will tell you how much space there is available.
Processor speed and RAM are not an issue when you're recording one single audio track.

  • MS 6147 max memory and disk sizes

For the MS 6147 can anybody confirm the max Hard disk size and max memory.
It will not recognise the 40Gb HD I am trying to fit, and only recognises half of the 256Mb memeory simm I have fitted.
The BIOS version is 1.9 but I think that is a 'special' by Packard Bell.  The MSI BIOS download site makes no mention of disk problems rectified right up to V1.8 which is the latest, with the exception of one for the ZX chipset only which addresses EDMA 66 problem.

  • WMV and Disk Size issues

So I am a pretty avid Encore user and I have come into some issues lately and could use some help.
    Background-
I filmed a 14 hour conference on SD 16:9 mini dv
I captured 14 hours with Premiere as .AVI - I edited the segments and exported as .AVI
I used Media Encoder to convert the files to NTSC Progressive Widescreen High Quality (.m2v)   - Reduced the file size drastically
I then used Media Encoder to convert the .m2v files to .wmv files - Reducing the conference size to 5.65 GB in total.
I then imported the .wmv into Encore - my issues begin
At first, Encore CS4 imported the .wmv files without a problem however the disk size (of 5.65 GB) registered in Encore as around 13 gigs???  Why is that?  The .wmv files only consume 5.65 gb on my harddrive.  Where is this file size issues coming from?
So then Encore CS4 gets upset that I have exceeded the 8.5 DL Disk size and crashes...
I reopen the program and try to import my .wmv files again (forgot to save like an idiot).  3 of 8 .wmv files import and then Encore starts giving me decoder errors saying I cannot import the rest of the .wmv files...
Can anyone help me with this issue?  Im quite confused by all of this.  Things seemed to work fine (sorta) at first and now Encore is pissed.
I want to get this 14 hour conference on 1 DL DVD and I thought it would be as simple as getting the files reduced to a size sutable for a 8.5 gb disk.  Why is my way of thinking incorrect?
    Thanks for any help,
    Sam

Im still not giving up....  It's become an obsession at this point.  My uncle does this with kids movies for his children.   He'll download and compress entire seasons of children shows and put them all on one dvd which he then plays in a dvd player for them to watch.  Im currently trying to get ahold of him....
    Thanks for the help
    Sam
i've done this as well for shows that are never to be seen again for the light of day from the 80s and such... i use VSO Software's "ConvertXtoDVD v4" i ONLY use this for archival purposes of xvid or wmv or stuff that encore would throw fits over. the menus are all mainly default stock stuff. but for these projects i'm not concerned about menus or specific navigation, i just need to get the job done. i can squeeze around 15 hrs of 720x480 on one DL (it compresses the ever living dayligths out of the video... but for most of the source footage... it really doesnt matter at that point, its mostly all VHS archives i use for this program anyway) if you just absolutely HAVE to have a 1 disker, you could check that app out, burn it an see how it looks.
edited to add: that to really squeeze crap in, you can also use a DVDFab program (any ersion should do... Older ones are cheaper) make a disc image with ConvertX, if yiu have alot f footage it may push it beyond the normal boundary of a dvd-dl and fail the burn. So then you can just import the disc image into DVDFab, and choose it to burn to a DVD-DL, and it may compress it by about 3-7% more to fit it. I would NEVER use this method EVER for a client... But if you are just hell-bent on doing 1 disk. Tries these 2 apps out. It may work out if you can live with the compression.
if you do try this, I recommend trying this workflow. Open premiere with your first gem captured AVI. set up your chapters how you want them or whatever, then save each chapter or lecture or segment or whatever as it's own AVI. the. Import all those separately into ConvertX and set it up to play one after the other when each segment ends. [i can't confirm this 100%, because i usually drop in already compressed  files... but if for some reason it don't wanna work out... then i would  suggest dropping in the mts files instead] (if say you want a new "movie" for each lecture instead, and have chapters per movie that can be done too... But it's more work, but I can expound later if need be)  To save time on encoding, set up the menu to be the "minimalist" menu. It's strictly text. Then just create sn ISO. if you donthe full thing, I can almost guarantee you'll have to use DVDFab to burn to disc, because it'll probably be about 5-8% overburn.

  • Disk size in Solaris 10

I have some confusion about disk subsystem in Solaris, i am trying to clarify from this forum.
I have recently installed Solaris 10 in one SPARC box. After i installed, the format gives the bellow output.
    0 root wm 19491 - 29648 4.88GB (10158/0/0) 10239264
    1 swap wu 0 - 4062 1.95GB (4063/0/0) 4095504
    2 backup wm 0 - 29648 14.25GB (29649/0/0) 29886192
From the above output, is the size of my disk is 14 GB ?, or the size of my disk is 14+2+5=21 GB ?
I am trying to learn ZFS, so i want another partition in this disk so that i create ZFS on that partition.
I have gone to single user mode by using CD. I assumed that, from the above "format" command output, i thought i have 21GB of disk size and 14GB of free space. So i created another partition with 14GB. Now the format command gives bellow output.
    0 root wm 19491 - 29648 4.88GB (10158/0/0) 10239264
    1 swap wu 0 - 4062 1.95GB (4063/0/0) 4095504
    2 backup wm 0 - 29648 14.25GB (29649/0/0) 29886192
    3 reserved wm 0 - 29127 14.00GB (29128/0/0) 29361024
When i am creating ZFS, it given me a warning that the the partition i have specified is spanned into root partition (first partition), and it mentioned to use "-f" option.
    With "-f", it created successfully.
If i assume now that the size of my disk is 14GB only then,
    (1) how come two partitions are pointing to the same area in the disk ?
    (2) How come two different filesystems are pointing to the same area ?
Please anyone clarify my doubts. Thank you.

Assuming a standard labeled disk it is standrad practice to have section/slice 2 being 'whole disk' for purposes of 'backup'. That would tend to indicate you have a 14GB disk. A prtvtoc /dev/dsk/c?t?d?s2 (change the ?s to the right values) will give a little more on the disk geometry.
In the display from format column 4 is the start cylinder of the partition and column 5 is the end cylinder. From the first set out output it looks like cyclinders 4063 to 19490 are not allocated
In the second set you have created a new slice (section 3) that overlaps both sections 0 and 1 - which is generally considered to be bad!

  • Time Machine backup disk size - total capacity of disk or just files used?

    Hi folks,
After upgrading to Leopard, I'm trying to set up my Time Machine. My main HD is 175 Gig and all the OS and other files take up 37 Gig of that. The drive I want to use for Time Machine (a spare internal hard drive) is a 75 Gig drive with 74 Gig of space available. Time machine says this drive is too small to use.
According to the Time Machine documentation, Time Machine takes the _total size of the files_ to be backed up and multiplies that by 1.2. So in my case, since the total files on my 175 Gig drive take up 37 Gig, then I would need only 42 Gig for my Time Machine back up. So, in theory, my 75 Gig spare drive should work just fine.
The problem is that Time Machine is taking the total size of the entire HD and using that to calculate the size of the back up drive, which would be 210 Gig. Does anyone know why this problem is occurring? It seems like Time Machine is not calculating the needed back up disk size properly and is incorrectly including the unused disk space on my main HD.

Not sure exactly, but your drive really is too small. Yes, 37 gb plus workspace would do for your initial Full Backup, but subsequent incrementals could fill it up pretty fast. That would depend, of course, on how you use your Mac -- how often you add or update files of what sizes.
If you change your habits and, say, download a multi-gb video, then work on editing it for a few hours, you could eat up the remaining space very, very quickly.
Just to be sure, how are you determining space used? Via right-click (or control-click) and Get Info on your HD icon?
Also, do you have any other HDs connected? If so, exclude it/them, as TM will include them by default.
    Three possible workarounds:
First, get a bigger drive. HDs have gotten ridiculously cheap -- 500 gb (or even some 1 tb) for not much over $100.
Second, use CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, or a similar product instead of TM. CCC is donationware, SuperDuper about $30, I think. Either can make a full bootable "clone", and CCC has an option to either archive previous versions of changed files or delete them. CCC can be set to run automatically hourly, daily, etc. (I suspect SD can, too, but I don't know it's details). An advantage is, of course, if your HD fails you can boot and run from the "clone" until you get it replaced, then reverse the process and clone the external to the internal.
Note that these will take considerably longer, as unlike TM, they don't use the OSX internals to figure out what's been added or changed, but must look at every file and folder. In my case, even smaller than yours, TM's hourly backup rarely runs over 30 seconds; CCC's at least 15 minutes (so I have it run automatically at 3 am). And, if you don't keep previous versions, of course, you lose the ability to recover something that you deleted or changed in error, or got corrupted before the last backup.
Third (and NOT recommended), continue with TM but limit it to your home folder. This means if you lose your HD, you can't restore your whole system from the last TM backup. You'd have to reload from your Leopard disk, the apply all OS updates, and reload any 3rd party settings, then restore from TM. As a friend of mine used to say, "un-good"!
