Disk Sleep times not accurate

Not wanting my external drives to spin down every ten minutes (actually eight minutes), I reset the the disk sleep interval with the sudo pmset command or with TextWrangler. Oddly enough, I found that this works but is not accurate. Setting the time for 30 minutes would allow my disks to spin down after only 23 minutes. At a 60 minute setting, they would spin down in about 44 minutes. They seem to spin down anywhere from 70% to 80% of the value set. Has anyone else experienced this? Anyone know why?

  • Sleep Timer Not responding

    Hello
I am having trouble setting a sleep timer on the iOS5 - never needed to previously.
I go to the CLOCK icon, set the timer, and choose "stop playing" when timer ends.
The radio App. stops briefly then kicks back in and never stops untill I physically stop it in the middle of the niight.
Am I missing something or is this a bug in the iOS?
If so, any recommendations (other apps I can dowload that could do the job)?
    Thank You in advance.
    RJC

I believe that the "Stop Playing" only applies to the built in Music app. For a third party app, check to see if it has its own sleep timer function. A popular radio app with a sleep timer is TuneIn Pro.

  • Time not accurate on iPad??

My iPhone and my iPad do not agree on the time of day. I set them both up in the same time zone and reset both devices. The iPad thinks it is five minutes ahead of the phone. I believe the phone gets the time from the cell towers and the wifi iPad? Who knows where the time comes from... (or goes, for that matter)? Both are set to get the time automatically. How does the iPad get the currect time and do I have to manually control iy for it to be accurate? Both seemed to convert to standard time ok.

You can set the date and time from:
Settings > General > Date & Time and then Time Zone and Set Date & Time.
That way you can correct the time if it is off, and the iPad knows from the selected time zone when to switch from daylight savings to standard time...along with the time zone for the specified location.
Set correctly initially, the iPad should keep the time pretty accurately. Not sure what would happen if you managed to some how succeed in completely draining the battery. If you follow the Apple battery conditioning/charging procedure you do not actually completely drain the battery. The unit auto shuts down at about 1% charge. That keeps certain info in memory.

  • Change Thunderbolt Disk Sleep Time

Hi, so I have a new iMac with a LaCie d2 Thunderbolt being used with Time Machine. Since the LaCie is a little loud (in comparison with the super silent iMac), I want OS X to put it into standby mode sooner than it already does.
I know I should be able to just open terminal and use "pmset -a disksleep" to change this time (default 10, I'd probably make it 5), but to my understanding this is for all hard drives (external and internal). Is there anyway to specify this command to only external disks or, better yet, only time machine disks?
Finally, if there isn't a way to only set this for the external drive, would it cause any problem to just set disksleep to 5? I'd prefer I could just get my external to immediatly sleep once the backup is done, so maybe I could spend some time to write a script to do that, but I wouldn't know what to do.

  • Ipad 3 usage stats (time) not accurate

    I've an iPad 3rd gen running 6.0.1.
I've noticed in the last couple of weeks that the usage stats "Time since last full charge" seems completely inaccurate.
I charged it fully overnight on Monday and took it off charge at around 8am Tuesday. It's telling me that standby is 2 days 13 hours. Pretty accurate there.
However, it's telling me that the usage time is 7 hours 13 minutes. I'm currently at 89%.
I've actually only used it for a couple of hours max which seems to match the 89% left figure.
Nothing is set to push. My email is set to only fetch manually. I've got nothing turned on in the way of notifications and location services are turned off.
Anyone else experiencing this before I do a restore?
Anyone else have any suggestions as to why this figure is wrong?
    TIA,
    Si.

Just checked my ipad again this morning after a full charge.  After going into the Usage screen, all my stats remained along with the message about it being plugged in since full charge.  At that point the stats reset.  I cannot say for sure whats different but I have never gone into the usage screen when its been fully charged.

  • Render Times on FCP Not Accurate?

    Hi, <- My casual Greeting
Hopefully there are a few video editors out there on the forum... cause this one is program specific....
So I have been an avid Final Cut Pro guy for the last 4 years. I love the program.... I can work very easily in it but recently I got a new job in which I have been using both FCP and Adobe Premier.
Here is my issue... I have been using files that come in as MPEG 2 and have been using MPEG Streamclip to convert them over to a ProRes file for FCP. From FCP I have had to export them into 3 formats
    1. Mpeg 4 (the file format our website takes)
    2. FLV (Format for online video sites)
    3. QuickTime (XDCAM) for our tricaster
The last week I have been using FCP and my render times have been (for a 5 min clip)
    1. Mpeg 1 hour+
    2. FLV 20 min+
    3. QuickTime (XDCAM) 1 hour +
Yesterday I was told to use Premier as my boss uses Premier on a regualr basis and I assured him that the times would be the same as FCP is a Mac native program and that Premier was made to work on a mac but is essentially a PC program (I am eating my words now)...
I redid the renders on the same file...
On premier the render times were
    1. Mpeg 30+ min
    2. FLV 12 min
    3. QuickTime (XDCAM) 40 min
Why is this? Do I just have something really messed up in my settings that FCP is not rendering quickly and Premier is? I would hate to have to hop over to Premier... I enjoy using FCP way to much.
The other question I have is why are FCP render times not accurate...
The renders will start saying 5 min then 10 then an hour etc.... and the time will not be accurate. If it says 5 min it may go for an hour... or if it says an hour it may just complete while still telling me I have an hour to wait.
Adobe Premier, right off the bat, will tell me the frame it is on and the percent and time left... almost to the T.
If possible... please help me get my fcp back on the right track.
    Tim

Rendering can be much faster if you have a multi core intel Mac and you use Qmaster with Quick Clusters.
    Here's how.
Set up Quick Clusters in Qmaster. (A description of how to do this is in the manual and also can be found in the Qmaster forum here in the Apple discussions as well as out on the web.)
Export your sequence from FCP using "current settings". (Do NOT use Quicktime Conversion!)
Open up Compressor and submit your file. Add the three output elements.
Submit the file and click "use unmanaged services"
Go have a cup of coffee while all the cores chug away at things. I guarantee it will be faster than the way you are currently exporting (if you aren't using clusters)

  • Setting Disk Sleep Timers problems with FCP4.5?

Still experiencing trouble when Printing-To-Tape projects that are over 30 min in length. It usually stops at around 26 minutes. I head something about Disk Sleep Timers. I checked my Mac under About This Mac>More Info>Power...I found that my Disk Sleep Timer is set to 10 minutes and System Sleep Timer is set to 180 minutes. Could this be the problem? Should I reset my Disk Sleep Timer to a longer time? If so, how can I do this?
Also, other mentioned something about Journaling on the disks? What is that? Should they be on or off? How can I check. Please help.

    Luis,
You will want to set your sleep to never, screen savers to None, and disk spindown to never.
This is a way to set the disks to never:
    In Terminal type:
    sudo pmset spindown x
    then type your pass word
x=the number of minutes that you want till your drive spins down.
    0 is never
More info on using pmset here:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/pmset.1. html
    And I found this here
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/sbbod.html
Do a command f and search for "pmset" that is where i first found this.
Note that this is a more 'controlled' way of Putting the hard disk to sleep than possible in
system preferences>energy saver>sleep>Put the hard disk to sleep when possible
In that situation, checked means x=10 and unchecked means, not 0 but 180 minutes.
Also, there are some utilities with a graphical interface that will do this as well.
    Good luck.
    x

  • HT4354 Nano 6G Sleep Timer: Where's the Manual?

I would like complete, concise directions on how to use the sleep timer (not the 36 hour sleep battery saver feature) conveniently (click on and off while in the music menus) while listening to music. Does Apple provide a complete manual for this product? The "manual" I found didn't have much information. Why can't software/hardware companies write manuals anymore? People are helpful on the forums, but the information ends up being fragmented, hard to search, difficult to date, & hard to pin down to a device version, etc.

They are trying to save trees.

  • Adjusting Hard Disk Sleep?

Is there a way to adjust the default time when I've enabled "put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible"? The default time seems very short to me, and would love to extend it to a half hour or so before they go to sleep.
    Thanks!

yes, it's possible. install TextWrangler and open the file /library/preferences/systemconfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist in textWrangler. change the entry for Disk Sleep Timer from 10 to 30 and save. you'll have to provide your admin password. then restart and the disk sleep timer will be set to 30 minutes. you can adjust that number to whatever you want of course.

I'm (being lazy and) using the older RT app posted on your last thread. I removed the
TimeNow timer from the RT class and used System.currentTimeMillis (as you requested) to
determine the elapsed time during the animation (see "startTest", "stop" and
"movingObject" methods). Also changed the DecimalFormat to NumberFormat and set the
"maximumFractionDigits" to "2" so it will truncate the fraction to two digits (more simple
than before). Made arrangements for the ShapeMovingPanel class to update the
"timerJTextField" during the animation (RT.updateTime method).
The MouseMotionListener is causing the animation to appear jerky and uneven. The
"mouseMoved" method is very busy while the mouse is moving. You might consider recording
the "mousePressed" events instead of the "mouseMoved" events, ie, the events where the user
is attempting to click inside the moving shape. It would allow the app to be more
responsive and might eliminate the uneven motion of the animating shape.

  • I'm having trouble backing up my second macbook to a new time capsule.   continue to get an error message -- "Time  Machine Error.  The backup disk image could not be created."   Is there something I need to change in my time capsule or time machine?

I just set up a new time capsule.  it worked fine on my first macbook.  But now I cannot backup my second macbook.   Getting "Time Machine Error"  "The backup disk image could not be created."  Do I need to change settings on my time capsule to allow the second computer, or do I need to change something on the computer to allow time machine to work right?

  • Time Machine / Time Capsule Error: Backup disk image could not be mounted

So I'm trying to back up to time machine, which used to be working fine, but I have this problem happening on two computers now (which probably means the error is in my Time Capsule.)
The Time Capsule shows up on my "shared" list in my finder windows.
I can connect to it, and open the folder inside, and SEE my two disk image files in there.
But Time Machine gives me a "The Backup Disk Image Could Not Be Mounted" error. No other information.
If I double-click on the disk image file directly, I get an error "The Following disk images failed to mount" and then it lists the file and says "Resource temporarily unavailable."
    Help, please.

I'm caught in the same loop, with no end in sight. I've only been using Time Machine and Time Capsule for 2 months. This week it stopped working. First error message:
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
Checking the Time Machine preferences, "Last backup" would read "backup failed"
When I got this error, all the wireless functions went offline, even thought the TC light was still green.
I would shut down, shut down the Time Capsule, shut off my modem reboot everything in order.
    Next error message:
"Disk repair. The disk 'Backup of [my computer]' was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must backup your data and reformat the drive."
Then: "Time Machine Error: The backup volume is read only. To select a different volume ... Time Machine preferences ... "
I spoke to someone at Apple, who sent me the Time Machine Troubleshooting page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3275?viewlocale=en_US
    I went through:
    1. updated my system software
    2. updated the TC firmware to 7.4.1
    3. dragged the sparsebundle to DiskUtility. It took a while (more than an hour?) but said the disk could not be repaired. When I tried again, the repair function wouldn't run.
    4. tried to delete the sparsebundle, but it would choke at almost the end, sometimes it would just crash the finder, sometimes say "Sorry, an unexpected error occurred," sometimes "Operation cannot be completed because the item 'bands' is in use." I even tried to Stuff the bundle with 'delete original' checked, but the stuffing, after about 15 hours, jammed near the end (stuffed 20 gigs of 35 gigs).
    5. tried to reselect the TC, and run backup anyways ... now it can't find the volume, back to the error messages and crashing Finder
    6. checked password in Keychain, all ok.
    Now what??
Do I use Airport Utility to erase it? At least TC is still showing up there. Or press the rest button on the back of the Time Capsule to reset to factory defaults?
I've resigned myself to losing my backups. Now I would just like to get it up and running again.
    In hopes,
    Linda

  • Time machine - "the backup disk image could not be mounted"

SInce a few days, I am unable to backup via Time Machine.
    I always get the message:
    TIME MACHINE ERROR
The backup disk image could not be mounted
I use an Apple Time Capsule and still have more than enough free space on it.
    Use OS X 10.5.5
    Help.....
    Tks

    Rosy,
*_"The Backup Disk Image Could Not Be Mounted" (Console - “Failed to mount disk image”)_*
First, it is important to distinguish this error message from another, similar Time Machine error that states “The backup volume could not be mounted”. This is important as the causes and cures for these two errors can be very different.
Consider each topic below separately. When one option does not resolve your issue, then move on the next one.
*Unmount the Backup Disk Image* (TC)
If, for some reason, you have manually mounted the Time Machine backup disk image (sparsebundle), or Time Machine failed to eject it after the previous backup, subsequent backups may fail. (Console - “Failed to mount disk image”… “Backup failed with error: 21”)
Eject the backup disk image (white drive icon) by either clicking the little Eject icon to the right of the disk image in the Finders’ Sidebar, or Ctrl-Click the drive icon on the desktop and select “Eject” from the contextual menu. Now try backing up again or launching Time Machine to view previous backups.
    *“Disconnect All Users…”:*
If your Time Machine backup drive (“Backup of Users Computer”) is mounted on your desktop or in the Sidebar of the Finder window. then Time Machine may think the drive is already in use. Alternatively, if the Time Capsule hard disk has been recently accessed by a Windows machine, it may not have fully relinquished control. Do the following:
Open Airport Utility and select the Time Capsule on the left.
    Click “Manual Setup”.
Select “Disks” at top of window.
Click “Disconnect All Users…” at bottom of window.
    Close the Airport Utility.
    Now try Backing up again.
“I got it resolved. Apparently it had to do with one of the files being open on the disk from the drive. I had browsed the disk with one of my windows boxes here and it must have left one of the folders "open". Anyway, I rebooted the TC and we are good to go now.”
    *Proper Computer Name* #
Make sure your computer has a proper name. Go to System Preferences --> Sharing. Time Machine needs to differentiate your computer from others on your network (i.e. "Bills MacBook" or "Office iMac"). If the "Computer Name" field is blank, create a name. Realize that if this step is necessary, you will likely have to start the Time Machine backup process over again and do another full initial backup.
According to this article, [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1760], Time Machine may experience problems if your computer name includes certain characters. Make sure the computer name only includes ASCII characters from the following set.
    (0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ)
Once a change in the computer name occurs, you should stop and restart Sharing on the affected computer. Uncheck and then recheck Sharing in the Services list on the left.
Let us know if any of the suggestions above resolves your issue.
    Cheers!
