Disk space almost full
I have a G4 imac running Tiger. Since my son was born last December I have increased my iphoto library by about 4000 images. Subsequently I have only 1.5GB left on my hard drive. I have backed up approximately 6000 images onto 6 DVDs (2 copies of each 2000 image DVD) and I also back up to a 120GB external disk. I would like to remove the 10GB of images, but I want to take the albums associate with them also. My hope is very soon to upgrade to the new iMac later this year and look towards a 500GB hard drive. I want to know the best way of backing up and transferring so that when I get the new Imac I can load everything back to Iphoto and it would be like nothing happened. Can anyone suggest the most anxiety free way of doing this?

The best solution would be if you could get everything on an external FW HDD, and then when you get your new computer with larger HDD you could just clone everything, or just the Users folder containing all your data, images and all, using SuperDuper. If you are not able to get everything on your external HDD, back up all you can, then when you have your new HDD, first restore from the external HDD, then from CDs, DVDs, or wherever.

i got my first macbook air about a year ago. awhile ago i started getting these notifications saying "your startup disk is almost full" or "your startup disk is full". i was wondering how to get more space on my startup disk, if that is possible?
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
1. See Lion's Storage Display.
2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.

6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits. -

"Your Startup disk is almost full" How do you fix this?
Someone please help! More and more frequently my Mac Mini (Mac OS X Version 10.5.8) say that "My startup disk is almost full" So I deleted everything non critical to the maintenance and function of my Mac Mini but still it tells me that my "Start up disk is almost full" Also some important information. I tried installing Boot camp to my mac but halfway though the installation something went wrong. I took out Windows XP (the program i was trying to place on Boot Camp) and a message saying "No bootable device" appears. It appears everytime I try to turn my Mac on unless i hold down the command key during startup which then gives me the option to select "Hard Drive". Also some applications Ex. iTunes will refuse to startup at all and say "iTunes cannot be opened. An unknown error has occurred (13014). I do not know what (13014) is and I cannot find it anywhere. Can someone *PLEASE HELP ME!* I think the problem can be solved by getting the failed Bootcamp program on but I am not totally sure.
OK, so you have one of the first Intel Mac Mini's that came out. I also have one of those models but now has a bad logic board.

Do you have 2 Hard Drive icons on your desktop still?
Or just the one?
If you have 2 icons, then you still have 2 partitions...
If you only have the one HD icon, then your HD is only 60 GB in size and you are running out of room as you only have 8.6 GB left which is getting minimal...
You may be running out of HD space as it appears you only have a 60 GB Hard Drive.
You may have a lot of music, movies, photos, etc., that are taking up a lot of space.
If that is the case, I would suggest buying an external Hard Drive to store your music, movies, photos, and other items like that on which will free up your internal drive.
I have an external 500 GB Hard Drive attached to my Mac MIni... This gives me a lot of extra room to grow and I also have it partitioned so I can use Time Machine to backup my internal HD...
If you don't already have some kind of backup, an external drive is one good way to have a backup. -
i have a mac os x ver. 10.5.8 2x2.8 quad. my start up disk is almost full. can i change my start up disk from the original hard drive to an additional hard drive i added in Bay 4?
Always want to keep the boot drive with more free space than may seem necessary for performance and to function at its best, 30-40% free or even 50% is not excessive.
Ideal is to separate your system from your data.
You should always have bootable backup / clone of your system
Don't use a green drive for system or data though.
When you are done cloning system and/or data, remove the old original and keep as backup.
Then move the system drive to #1 - no matter what you want to reset the default boot volume to where the system is.

Your Disk is Almost Full ... No it's not. Why is OS X telling me this?
OS X Warning: "Your Startup Disk is Almost Full. You need to delte files to make more space."
Ironically, the more files I have delted, the less available space I see in Disk Utility.
I had 20 Gigs available when the message first appeared. So I deleted over 30 Gigs worth of files. The change did not show in Finder so I restart the computer.
there were the 50 Gigs. It felt good to do some house keeping, so I kept going.
The message keeps appearing, and now, both Finder and Disk Utility are telling me that I have only 800 Megs of space available.
The storage map, locate here: /About this Mac/ More Info/ Storage was is showing 80 Gigs worth of "other files." Just a few hours ago, that number was under 10
Gigs. What is happening?
I know I have 50 Gigs available. Does anyone know what may be happening?

When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Reboot and it should go away.

You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.

Computer says disk is almost full, but I have 14 GB free

I get a message that says that the disk is almost full. In disk utility, it states that 36 out of 37 gb of hard drive space has been used. However when I open the finder window after clicking on the hard drive (the first level showing applications, library, system, users), it only adds up to about 23 gb of space being used once I select calculate all sizes. It doesn't show me the other 13 gigabites that would add up to 36.
I don't have the 10.5 CD's since I bought this off of ebay preloaded with the os.
I've already repaired drive holding the shift key upon startup. I've ran cocktail pilot mode to run scripts, repair permissions, empty cache, etc...I turned on invisible items using cocktail to see if I can find the extra gigabites to no avail.
It is not connected to the USB external drive.
File Vault is off.
Any other suggestions.Seems there's some hidden File/Folder on the drive.

My MacBook air's startup disk is almost full, what do I do?
A message has been popping up that my startup disk is almost full and that I need to delete files. I've deleted items in my trash but I only have 8.66 GB available. I have gone through a lot of my files and when I go into my Macintosh hd it has those lines for what is taking up the most space and it is other. The blue audio says 3.48 GB the purple movies says 3.65 GB the orange (photos) says 780.5 MB the green (apps) says 4.29 GB and it says zero KB for back ups. So this other thing is taking up the most room how do I delete stuff from the other column. I would like to update my software but I need to free up space.

Empty the trash in the Dock as well as iPhoto’s trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps. Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need. Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.). Or transfer/move them all to a photo/movie storage site like ImageShack and Photobucket, 2 of the most popular FREE storage sites.
Get rid of all your video & music files you no longer view and/or listen too. Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website. Or transfer them all to a FREE video/movies and/or music storage site.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything. You can even trash directly from Spotlight! Better yet, download this FREE software called Find File. This app puts Spotlight to shame (works w/Mountain Lion).
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash. Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete. Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs. Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or the system requirements for iCloud to store their "stuff.”
Dropbox is a free storage utility to check out.
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days. There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also. Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
Check for duplicate fonts.
Applications>Font Book
Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored. Get rid of some some them. You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a *FREE* utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

Hello, I just got a message while I was using photoshop that my scratch disk is almost full and that I need to delete files to clear up space. I am not sure how to clear files from the scratch disk. I cleared all the files listed under open recent.
I am on a mac dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5. There is 3 GB of memory installed and the start up disk is my harddrive. The OS is 10.5.4. I am using photoshop CS3. My hard drive is not partitioned. The L2 Cache per CPU is 512 KB.
The file I am currently working on in photoshop displays under scratch 1.35/2.05G. The file size is 38.5M/490.5M. Their have been some occasional crashes lately and I am noticing that when I am very rapidly dragging low opacity radiant gradients set to foreground to transparent, photoshop is not keeping pace with my rapid drags of the tool. I may do a 100 drags of a gradient to feather a mask and I will get a spinning disk. I have the same problem with multiple fills with the paint bucket. Also clicking file save while I work gets a delayed response and spinning gear. When I check Efficiency it hovers between 95 and 100%.
I would really appreciate any help with dealing with a scratch disk that is almost full. How do I find the temp files so I can empty them? Where is the cache so I can empty that too? How do I defrag photoshop? I have run disk utility from the utilities menu and not had any errors show up. Thanks.

Lundberg, to answer your question, this means Michael is looking at either the info panel or the values that appear in the bottom left of every Photoshop document window. You can learn more about this in the Help section. This value has been available in Photoshop for many years.
So how does Lundberg02 explain why a full scratch disk warning appears when the drive has plenty of space?

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

I have a pages file I created 333k when I print then select save pdf the file jumps to 1.2mb why? I have tried save as and still same result I have recreated document new same result original is 333k pdf becomes 1.2mb
