Disk space concern

Thanks to all your help in getting me going in iMovie & iDVD. But..... with each VHS tape I read in, I am using disk space up fast. I do have a second 500 GB internal drive - can I make iMovie use this drive always, as a default? If so, how?
It looks like I created 3 different types of files for each tape I read in:
stuff.dv
stuff.dvdproj
stuff - under kind is says "iMovie project"
To be able to re-edit this tape, do I need to keep all three?
Can I just drag these files to the other internal drive?

forget for a second your expertisé on a Windows system... ;))
a) in iM, choose under file/New Project... select your 2nd drive as location... boom!done...
b) if you like to 'transfer' an iM project, switch to Finder, locate the project (probably in your 'Movies' folder....), it has a little 'star' on its icon... drag'n drop that into the new location... boom!done...
you can proceed same with iDVDproject...
warning:
hopefully, that 2nd drive was formatted to 'MacOsExtended' before use... 'fat32/PC' does not work with iM/iDVD.....

  • Time Machine disk space concerns

I've had a 17" MacBook Pro for several months now and never really got around to actually using Time Machine to back up its 750GB hard drive without irritating messages of "not enough disk space".
I use a 1TB external My Passport USB 3.0 hard disk and just turned on TM to back it up; it's about 70% full (that is, about 500GB) and, therefore, 1GB should be more than enough for the task.
It starts off OK, backs the full content and then proceeds to the hourly rounds. In a couple of hours it begins complaining that it doesn't have enough disk space. I believe that's due to my constant use of two VMWare virtual machines (total of roughly 280GB-320GB counting both).
Can someone confirm/deny my suspicion? Also, what's the "best practice" say about size of external drive to back up a 750GB HDD? Any other hat tricks I can use to have a reliable backup?
    Thanks in advance!
    Fernando

Apple recommends that a Time Machine backup drive should be twice as large as the drive it's backing up.

  • How do I remove iWork 06 and 08, I have 09, and I desperately need the disk space.

I am running the latest version of Snow Leopard on a 2006/7 MacBook Pro. After teaching myself how to use a mac, and how to maintain it, I wish to God I could go back and do full, clean installs of each OS upgrade...alas, hindsight is always 20/20. But thats for another time.
My immediate issue is disk space: Using Space Gremlin & browsing my HD I realized I have 3 massive iwork libraries/files/folders. iwork '06, '08, '09. Im certain I dont require all 3 considering I only use most current version (however the previous two take up gigabytes of space). Is there a safe way to delete them? Will the papers written, work saved from '06-on still be able to be opened using the most current version? If so, I wonder why Apple doesnt just delete the old version each time you upgrade?
I have also deleted all podcasts and photos after moving them to an external, yet Im certain that theres gotta be a way to 1) combine my itunes libraries from my two user accounts (I used the same login on both), but have had issues combining songs on my most used account so I can delete the other library for space. After accomplishing that feat I would then like to learn a method to run my itunes and iphoto libraries from my external HD; if so, could someone please help me learn how to do so seamlessly?
I am in your debt, anyone that can answer these ?s....
    Thank you very much!

ummm, below it says im running 10.6.7, yet my computer states im using 10.6.8?? should I be concerned?

    First, iTunes and iPhoto -
    iTunes Sharing;

    Moving iTunes to another drive;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
    Moving iTunes to ext for backup;

    Moving iPhoto Library;
    http://gadgetwise.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/02/qa-transplanting-you-iphoto-libra ry/
The iWork issue should simply be a matter of dragging the iWork '06 and iWork '08 folders to the Trash and emptying it.
However, I'm a bit wary as you say they're using several GB? The actual application folders should be around 650MB each (that's the folder containing the three applications).
Check those folders for extraneous files if they're bigger.
There are folders in Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > iWork '06 (or '08) which should be around 230-250MB each.
There will also be a few .plist files, but their sizes will be negligible and it's not worth bothering with them.
All files created in earlier versions should open fine in iWork '09 versions. Always pays to try them of course!

  • Critical disk space! desperate for help!

here is the story. all of a sudden, my hard disk is telling me i have somehow filled 71.69 of 74.4 GB of disk space. the largest of these volumes on the HD is the Users folder in my Home folder. i did some research, and i heard that some console messages can tell someone about problems concerning volumes growing to unchecked sizes. i saw a series of messages in my "console.log" reading:
"Excessive update rate for jasonedwards@Jason Edwards’ Computer.presence.tcp.local.;"
does this mean anything at all? does anyone know? my computer is at critical mass, and as a musician, i am loathe to move all my music files to an external hard drive i cannot afford.
    Please help!
    -Jason

    mr.spanky --
If you're uncomfortable with working with the Terminal,
you can download a free app called "Whatsize" which
will tell you what it taking up the space.
    Here's where to find it:
    http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/
Just a little other very friendly advice here --
    You said:
my computer is at critical mass, and as a musician, i am loathe to move all my music files to an external hard drive i cannot afford.
If you're a serious musician, you can't afford NOT to get an external drive.
They cost about $80, and will save hours and hours of your work.
If you lost all of your music due to losing HD space, how much would that be worth? A lot more than $80, I bet.
    All the best . . .

  • Lost disk space after each reinstall.

I've had to reinstall leopard on my macbook three times in the last week for different reasons. After each reinstall(erase and install) it appeared that I lost a little more GB to the HDD. I have a 250GB HDD, and I know it actualls reads as 232.87, but without uploading any media and only using the reinstall disks that came with the box, I have only 218 or so GB. Is this normal? I can't find the numbers anywhere; they just don't add up.

    Anthony Turtzo wrote:

My guess is that you have added up the sizes of the folders visible in Finder at the root level of the drive (Applications, Library, System, & Users) & compared that total to the total space used on the drive. The two numbers will not match because there are also hidden files & folders at the root level of the drive that Finder does not normally show. The hidden items are necessary for the proper operation of the Mac & in normal use are managed by the system. Since users should not tamper with them directly without good reason & it requires expert knowledge to do so without breaking anything, they have been made invisible in the Finder view.
It is normal for the drive space used by these items to fluctuate, & for the total to grow somewhat after first installing the OS. Some of the items contain temporary files that are created & destroyed as needed. Some contain usage, crash, & other informational logs that are managed by routines that the system automatically runs periodically to keep their total from becoming too large. Others contain initialization data gathered over time that the system uses to start up or to run processes efficiently.
Thus, there is no fixed correct number for their total size since that depends on the history & current state of the machine. On my iMac G5, one large hidden folder ("var") currently uses about 1.05 GB of drive space, but consider that only a ballpark number since it may be considerably different on different Macs at different times.
If you are still concerned about the health of the drive, especially that something is eating up disk space unnecessarily, then run Disk Utility to check it. In the "First Aid" tab select your drive & click the "Verify Disk" button. If this reports no problems then you can be pretty sure there is nothing to worry about.

  • MXF export flagged as "out of disk space" - never finishes

Have an AVC-INTRA project which has a motion jpeg sequence in it.  When I attempt to export the entire sequence as MXF - avc-intra 100 the export through media encoder stops between 50 and 65% and a message comes up by windows indicating that an application needs to close.  Media Encoder CS5 5.0.1 does not complete the encoding and generates an error messege "out of disk space"  However, there is ample space on the drive being used to export the project.  Is there a file size limit to mxf export or duration limit to mxf export?  DO NOT UNDERSTAND why this export is not completing!
    Need help!  Thanks.

At first I thought I had a rendering issue with mxf but discovered Premiere Pro CS5 was creating the CONTENTS folder for the mxf on the right drive as per panasonics requirements.  Of course any sequence you export as an MXF file gets broken up into chunks in the contents folder.  One concern I have is if there is a limit in length or file size that the export is being limited to.  My sequence is 90 minutes in length.  Or better yet is the MXF container running out of chunk names for the sequence thus terminating the export.  Not sure on both.  I remember back in 1.5 or 2 when there was a bug concerning rendering long sequences but I thought Adobe has gotten past those types of errors.  Maybe not.  I checked the project size and there doesn't seem to be anything unusually large or strange going on with the project size.  This sequence is picture only with no audio.  If anyone else has a long sequence I recommend trying this to see if you get the same results.  Export should not be duration limited.  The other area I am thinking could be a problem is with memory management.  I've got 12 gigs of ram and I set media encoder to use a max of 9 gigs.  I'm wondering is there is something loosing track of memory on a longer export.  Created a new project and will try again.  This is my fourth attempt today.

  • I'm losing 2GB of free disk space every day. How can I prevent this?

Every day this week I notice that I lose about 2GB of free disk space on my MacBook Pro. I'm now down to 20GB. When I started the week, I had over 30GB. I haven't installed any new programs of signficance. I store my large documents (photos, music, movies) on an external hard disk. While the MBP is not giving me problems, performance-wise, I'm concerned about the constant loss of free space.
I checked the size of my sleepimage and swapfile in /private/var/vm and they appear to be normal. The sleepimage size remains constant at 4.29GB and there is only one swapfile that is using 67.1 megs.
I don't seem retain disk space even after clearing the User and System caches, repairing permissions, and restarting my computer.
I checked my recent Console messages and here is a short snippet:

File visibility = Visible or Invisible
Last modified date is within last 5 days
Size is greater than 10 MB

Yes, I'm running TechTool Pro 5 and it definitely looks like the Data Recovery feature is causing the disk space to be lost. I see lots of recent dates under the Directory Backups list. Looking at the Help guide, I haven't yet found how to turn this feature off.

  • Exchange Crawl Error referring to disk space

We have a number of Exchange 5.5 crawls that have started to fall over. I think the problem also manifests itself in the Adminin tool when I try to ammend any of the crawls concerned as I get a SOAP error displayed.
When I look in PTSPY I see the following error which I think is related:

I would recommend opening a ticket for support. Also, for clarity, the discussions in the deployment center are designed for deployed products; this discussion should be reserved for folks developing searches and crawlers.
Out of resources may be referring to memory as well. You may want to have perfmon run to see how available memory resources are. But I would definately open a support ticket.

  • Importing from iphoto requires a lot of disk space

    Hi,
I just purchased Aperture and am in the process of importing my iPhoto library. I followed Apple's video suggestion but was concerned as I started doing it on my own computer.
I was going to import from Iphoto and leave the files in the same location. But I immediately got a warning that this would take up 9gb of space.
    1. is that permanent or just requiring 9gb while the import takes place?
    2. if I'm using the iPhoto library and am leaving them there, why is it going to cost me so much disk space? (my laptop is limited on space, hence my concern
    3. Am I better off doing a 1-time import to a new location and deleting the iphoto library - yes I already backed up (I'll be using Aperture here on out)?
    thanks!

    TD,
thanks for that. I was also asking if it was common and correct that the import and leaving the library where it is would cost 9gb?

  • Update to 10.6.6 - 1GB disk space?

Hey I was wondering if every time I update to a new version of (Mac OS X 10.6.6 or 10.6.7), will this update take 1GB of my free disk space or will the update replace the current version? I have limited disk space so I dont want to update if it takes that much space every time.
If it does replace the file, is this true for other programs like itunes as well?

    Hey guys,
no basically I wasnt concerned about my free disk space, I know that I can store all my music, photos etc on an external hard drive. My question was, if the file that is installed on my macbook gets replaced by the new file or if it gets "added on", basically if I have 120 GB free and I install the update of 1GB, will I have 119 GB and for the next OS update I will have 118GB etc? Or will the free disk space be the same (120GB) because the whole program/operating system gets replaced?

  • Disk space (a "vs. iPhoto" question)

I'm a current user of iPhoto '08 but tried Aperture 1.5 in the past. I ended up reverting rather than purchasing the full version of Aperture because it seemed that iPhoto made better use of disk space than Aperture, due to Aperture's need to create a separate preview image. Plus with iPhoto I could click on a photo and see a representation of the full quality image, while in Aperture the previews are significantly lower quality.
Has anything changed in Aperture 2.0? With a library of 13,000 JPEGs, which program is more efficient with disk space?
Now let's say I switch over to shooting RAW images, which I would like to start doing more. Does that change anything?
Needless to say I am assuming Aperture 2.0 is fully compatible with Leopard and Time Machine. That was another concern I had with 1.5.

After you import your photos into iPhoto, you can delete the originals. In other words, if you have a folder full of images, and drag it to iPhoto, it will import them and make a copy of them. Then just delete the source folder. iPhoto makes multiple copies of photos - an original, a thumbnail version, and then a modified one that includes the edits that you make to the image. That way, you can always revert to the original version of the photo. It only makes a modified copy IF you have MADE modifications to the photos.

i am getting the following message "safari could not download the file (440 MB) because there is not enough disk space.  please delete files or download to another disk."  when i check system information it tells me i have 249.82 GB of disk space available.  any suggestions as to what i can do to resolve this problem.

    don
thanks for your suggestion.  that is the same advice that i got from the geek squad at the local apple store.
i did what he instructed but it did not work.  i have since called apple support twice regarding the problem.  they had me start the computer in safe mode, going into the library and deleting a phlist file (i think) do a repair disk permissions, do a repair disk, empty the cache, and finally the last guy told me to unplug the computer from the wall socket and restart.
when i mentioned the advice you and the apple store guy gave me they sort of poo pooed it saying that was done when they did all this other stuff.
i am now waiting for the download to be completed to see if unplugging the computer had any effect.
thanks again for your kindness in answering my concern.

  • Running out of disk space - External Drive Advice

    Hi,
I've been importing all of our HDV video in "Large" fomat (Not the original or full size). We have an Apple TV so wanted to get the qaulity up for our large TV.
Anyway, we have lots of digital pics, huge iTunes library and now I'm starting to run out of disk space with all of my iMovie imports.
I would like to buy a huge external drive to help offload:
Is there any reason I should be concerned about storing my video on external drive? Any editing performance issues?
I use time machine, if I buy a huge external, can I split it in half and use part for time machine and part for imovie?
    Just curious.
    Thx,
    Brent

I agree that you can make this work. Your external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). You can do this as you are creating your 2 partitions in Disk Utility, if it has a different formatting when you buy it.
If you want to move your Events from your internal drive to your new external drive, you need to do it from within iMovie so you do not break the links to your projects. To do this, open iMovie and click VIEW/EVENTS BY VOLUME. You should be able to see a small icon in your Event Library List for your external drive. You can Command-Drag your event icons in the event library list to this icon for your external, and all the links to your projects will be preserved. (hold down the command key while dragging). If you do a simple drag and drop, it will copy not move.

  • Deleted files not relinquishing their disk space

My system has recently developed an issue that I've never encountered before, and having come to the limits of my own knowledge of OSX I am now hoping somebody on here is able to help me with the problem.
I have a CD 2.16ghz MBP running Leopard 10.5.5. Connected to the FW400 port on the Machine is a 500GB WD Mybook external drive, evenly split into 2 partitions -one of which I am using as my Time Machine backup drive, and the other partition which I've labelled Storage. The Storage partition has started to cause me some headaches. The partition is about 230 GB in size and contains a number of large DMG files (SuperDuper backups of my home directory and the like), and currently only has about 30GB of free space. When I now delete anything off this drive, instead of being moved to the trash it is instantly deleted. I have seen this behaviour once or twice in the past, but this time round I wasn't presented with the standard warning that deleting my files would be effectively instant. On top of this - and this is the real problem - the disk space used by that file is not relinquished back to the disk upon deletion. I have recently deleted about 70GB of files from the partition and whilst they have gone, I have not seen any more drive space made available to me in the Finder info bar or Get Info.
So far I've used a 3rd party util called Disk Inventory X to see how the partitions space is allocated, and I can't see anything untoward in there (such as a large hidden folder containing my trashes), I've inspected the .Trash folder on the partition and confirmed it is empty, and I've unplugged and re-mounted the drive, all to no avail. I've doulble checked I have ownership of my .Trahs files, and that all seems to be in order, and that's about the extent of my expertise - I can't think of anything else to do to get to the bottom of this issue short of backing up all the files onto another volume and re-formatting the partition. Given the amount of time this will take I really want to leave this as a last resort.
If anybody can help shed any light on this issue for me I would be incredibly grateful.
    Thanks in advance

Update: I was previously unable to try "Secure Empty Trash" because Finder showed my Trash as empty. However, after deleting a file from my Home folder (so that the Trash icon now shows there's stuff there to be emptied), I have tried Secure Empty Trash again and it looks like Finder has begun the slow process of wiping about 70GB from my external partition.
While this may have solved the issue for the time being, I am concerned that this behaviour will continue, so if anybody has encountered this issue before and knows how to deal with it, I'd still very much welcome your input.

  • Insufficient disk space during index build?

    Hi All,
I have a library of pdf documents on a network share that I am indexing weekly from my laptop (overnight).  Recently, the index build has failed with the error message "insufficient disk space".  I have contacted the server admin and I have been assured that we have many hundreds of gb free.  In any case, the available space is much larger than the size of the document repository.  As a test, I copied the entire library to my local hard drive and the index build worked perfectly.  I'm concerned that there is another network issue at play here that isn't apparent from the error message.
I haven't found anything on Adobe's website on this error.  Can anyone help?

Try emptying the TEMP folder. A lot of applications, including Acrobat use the TEMP folder as a temporary work space and it is limited by Windows.
