Disk space eaten up with no files

Stand alone exchange 2013 (virtualized on vmware 5.1) - Windows 2012 R2 Standard edtion
Recently have noticed strange behavior.. of no mails being processed... after troubleshooting reckoned of low disk space on drive where transport queue was...we increased disk size.
Disk size allocated is 60GB
transport queue size is approx 4GB and still it shows only 10GB remaining.. as there is no other content than transport queue files.
Similar is with our database drive.... database size is approx 60GB... (We have enterprise vault hence DB size doesn't increase much)... drive size is 159GB.... but free space is only 13GB... same here no files other than database....(Transaction logs are
in different drive.
Checked if snapshots are there.. or content in recycle bin.. but there is nothing...
how to reclaim this space... or get visibility what is eating up this. so much... we can't keep on increase size of disk...
Cheers VP

First check the database size and log folder size by this command
Get-MailboxDatabase -Status | select ServerName,Name,DatabaseSize,EdbFilePath
Make sure logs are getting truncated by your backup
Please check these if database and log files not consuming the space

  • How much disk space is needed for scratch files?

I hope I am allowed one dumb question.  If so, I would like to know how much disk space should I allow when setting scratch files, if my MTS file is 16GB?  I am using Premiere Pro CS5 on a PC with Windows 7 Pro-64 bit.

how much disk space should I allow when setting scratch files
All of it.  Put them on a large disk (500GB or more) and just let PP take care of the rest.

  • Why doesn't my free disk space increase when I delete files on Mountain Lion?

I just upgraded my Macbook Air to Mountain Lion. Now whenever I delete files my free disk space doesn't increase. I show only 500Mb free space now (out of 120Gb), even though I just deleted 50Gb of files. I tried to reinstall Mountain Lion, but it said I don't have enough space. I have a very simple setup, with no external apps except for Office 2011. I am NOT using Time Machine (I have it set to "off"), or any other backup programs, so I don't think this is the problem.
Also, I noticed that whenever I move a file to the trash, I am asked for my password, which is extremely annoying.
I am living in France, far from the nearest Apple store. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I think you should try repairing permissions on your Home folder...
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/15/repair-user-permissions-in-mac-os-x-lion/
    Startup holding command-r keys.
You will boot into the Repair Utilities screen. On top, in the Menu Bar click the Utilities item then select Terminal.
In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
The Password reset utility launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on the icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the drop-down below it, select the user account where you are having issues.
At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled ‘Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs’. Click the Reset button there.
The reset process takes a couple of minutes. When it’s done, quit the programs you’ve opened and restart your Mac. Notice that ‘Spotlight’ starts re-indexing immediately.

  • Why doesn't my disk space free up after moving files to an external drive?

I have a 750GB internal HD but film a lot of movies. To free up space, I have moved my iMovie clips off to a secondary hard drive, but I have not seen my free disk space free up on my Macbook pro. Why is this? I moved, not copied the files. They only show now on the external hard drive.
I am looking at the free space in Finder > Get Info.
I have easily moved a few hundred GB off to the new drive, but my internal HD still shows as over 500Gb used.

  • Time machine is turned off but my startup disk keeps filling up with backup files on a hidden volume.

My Time Machine is turned off but my system startup drive keeps filling up with backup files in a hidden volume. How can I stop this? When Time Machine was turned on, the destination was set to an external drive.  I was completely confused about what was happening until I used Houdini to reveal the hidden volume. I have no idea how it got created or why it keeps filling up with no backup application running to my knowledge.  Thanks.

Download this, or a similar tool if you prefer:
OmniDiskSweeper - Products - The Omni Group
Boot in safe mode. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all, possibly including wireless networking.
Does your boot volume continue to fill up? Use the above tool to explore the volume and find out where the space is going.

  • Hard disk space eaten up by home movies

Just started transferring my old 8mm tapes of home movies to new iMac with 500 GB harddrive. Used ADVC 300 to effect the transfer and after about 10 hours of movies, over 200 GB has been used up. This seems like way too much space for so few hours. Any ideas what is going on? Could it be that iMovie keeps recording blank space after tape has stopped, because no one is there to manually stop it?

And that is the reason I am still using iMovie 6, so that I can create my iMovie from my home videos and burn them to DVDs and then export my finished movies back to my camcorder's DV tapes for permanent storage. iMovie 98 does not allow exporting back to DV camcorder at all.
My mini-DV tapes are small and should last long enough to be utilized when the next digital format comes along after DVDs.
To think that I could keep all these on a couple of hard drives is ridiculous. I laughed when I saw Steve J comparing doing so with video files in iMovie 08 in a manner similar to keeping photos in iPhoto.
I have made at least 65 iMovies that are nearly 2 hours each; some of them were around 20GB, but many were closer to 65GB. No way could I EVER store them on a hard drive.

  • Getting new Hard Disk. Need help with moving files from old one.

Hey guys so here is my dilema. So I have a Lacie 500GB Hard Drive and made the mistake of accidently deleting all my backups.db into the trash but thankfully never emptied that. There was no way to put it back into the backups folder so it caused me a lot of distress. I have decided to grab a portable hard disk instead such as the Western Digital. Heres my thought. I really only want to transfer a few things from the Lacie such as photos, movies, and a few documents from all the backup dates but nothing else. Is there a way to maybe automate so that certain files will transfer over instead of it all?
    Thanks in advance!
On a sidenote, if you have any suggestions for portable, small, lightweight, yet large capacity (at least 1TB) portable hard drives let me know!

    Lacie is a Seagate drive
To move specific files, open the backup database (time machine, backups.db). When you open Time Machine and select a date to restore from, you should see a Finder like view of that particular backup.  Navigate through the backup the same way as you would through the Finder and choose the folder or files you wish to restore.

  • Disk Utility burn error with dmg file

I'm using a Pioneer DVR 106D to burn a dmg file on to a blank DVD. I've done it many times before with the disk utility.
But now I'm getting this message when I try to burn the dmg or make a new image off the old DVD master:
"Device drained its buffer without burn underrun protection"
Can anyone please tell me how I can fix this problem?
    Thanks
    OS 10.3.9

I have encountered the same problem. I have a Mac Book Pro from 2007, and it has gone through 3 DVD writers so far, all of which have ruined DVD+R DL disks. I have occasionally been able to burn one, but usually during verify, I get this error message:
Communication to the disk drive failed: 0x8002022
And disk utility fails with a "Invalid B-tree node size" error
Oddly, when I try to burn a disk near capacity (6.5Gb or more) it is more likely to fail than if I burn a smaller disk.
I've been using Memorex DVD+R DL disks, but I have used other brands in the past but they have failed, too. Out of about 50 disks so far, I have had success with about 5.

  • How do I open compressed old files to view them before I delete,I have alot of space taken up with these files but I dont know what they are and if they are important.

I have just started using the computer and have no idea what old compressed files are or if they are important,so I have not deleted any ,and now they are taking up alot of space.

You should have the old Pages '08 inside the iWork folder, inside your Applications folder.
Open your old files in Pages '08 > Menu > File > Export > Word
Pages 5 can then open that Word file.

  • Disappearing disk space Windows Server 2012 R2 with SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise

I've got an interesting problem with a virtual machine in our VMWare environment.  It is Windows Server 2012 R2 with SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise installed.  I started out with a 60GB disk and it started running out of space, so I increased
it in VMWare and extended the partition to 100GB.  Well, that lasted for a bit and so I extended it again.  I've done this 3 or 4 times and now I've got a 160GB disk with about 2-3GB of space remaining (and it started with 10GB remaining).
WinDirStat shows 105GB of <Unknown> space being used, which is probably my issue.  However, I can't determine what this is and it keeps growing like a tapeworm.  The context menu on the <Unknown> files has all the options disabled,
so WinDirStat doesn't appear to have access to whatever the file(s) is/are.  I've performed several chkdsk /f on the C: drive and nothing bad is reported.  I don't have any restore points and am not running VSS (that I'm aware of).  The pagefile
reports as being about 4.9GB, so that's not the issue.  No large files are shown anywhere and my explorer settings are set to show me all files, including system files.
When I try to run WinDirStat with elevated permissions, it hangs and becomes unresponsive.
I've even resorted to running CCleaner to see if it found anything, but it simply found the standard temp files and such...about 1GB.
I'm pulling my hair out...and I don't have much to start with.  Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks
    Russ

It appears that somehow, Microsoft Fusion Assembly binding logging was turned on and many of the temp folders located at c:\users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\InetCache\IE were filling up with hundreds of thousands of Fusion HTM log files.
This is controlled by an entry in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fusion\ForceLog which was set to 1.  Hopefully, setting it back to zero will fix the issue.  As a result of figuring this out, I have recovered almost 80GB of disk
space occupied by the log files.
I thought WinDirStat would show me what I needed to know, but it turns out TreeSize (which I've used in the past) works much better.

If you are seeing daily increases and decrease in your disk utilization (for example it increases during the day/overnaight but in the morning the disk space has recovered what you are seeing is the impact of Tar optimization.
The Tar Persistence manager is the underlying storage mechanism for CRX. Data is stored in append only tar files. This means the when you update a node or property the new values are written to the Tar files, the indexes are updated to point to the new location, but the old data is also still left in the file. This mechanism allows for a much faster write mechanism. So the more you frequently you update existing content in your repository the larger you Tar files becomes.
There is a process called Tar File Optimization that by default is scheduled to run from 2 AM to 5 AM server time. This process identifies all the orphaned data in the Tar files and deletes, there by reducing the size of the tar files on disk.
So if you are in heavy content migration mode, or moving large amounts of content between instances you can see large swings in your disk space utilization as the Tar file balloons up during the day and then shrinks back down over night. In some cases depending on how large your repository is the 3 hours allotted by default is not sufficent to complete the optimizaiton so you may not be recovering all your disk space. During normal production operations this will normally average out over time and the 3 hour window is enough. However during periods of heavy usage, especially during QA or content migration you may find that your tar files are ever increasing in size. If that happens you need pick a period of time over say a weekend and trigger the Tar File optimization to run until complete to recover as much of your disk space as possible.
See http://helpx.adobe.com/crx/kb/TarPMOptimization.html for details on Tar File Optimization.
As someone else pointed out you may also have an issue with your data store which requires a different clean up method.
Another possible culprit is your Lucene index files. Depending on your data model and repository size you can swings in your Lucene indexes because like the Tar File it periodically cleans itself up and large amounts of content change can cause this cycle to become more pronounced.
This blog post dicusses in more deapth both Tar File Optimization and Data Store garbage collection. http://blog.aemarchitect.com/2013/06/17/importance-of-aem-maintenance-procedures-for-non-p roduction-boxes/

  • Problem of crashing in Ill. CS5 when working with big files.....

Hello, I'm working as a cartographer at Port of Rotterdam and frequently work with big maps in Illustrator CS5. As soon as the filesize exceeds 150 MB, and especially when small rasterfiles (mostly jpg's) are placed inside the document, either embedded or not-embedded, me and my collegue get notifications indicating "Can't show preview"or worse: The operation can't be concluded due to lack of RAM (dutch translation). This being a last warningsign just before CS5 collapses and it thus becomes impossible to make any Save on the document.... The hardware we work with: Quad Core 3GHz;NVidia Quadro 1GB;Windows XP with SP3, DirectX9; 8GB int. memory. We hope to find out the reasons of the frequent collapses and if you know of any possible solutions. On behalf of many of my collegues, thank you in advance for replying, greetings, Fred van Eck

There can be other causes for instance if your scratch disk is fragmented and if your scratch disk has gotten overloaded with actual files storage.
Or if the permissions for the scrtch has been changed for some reason.
The scratch need a lot of free contigious free space to work well with large files.
Even with CS 6 you can have a problem if your scratch is not healthy.
Do you have a dedicated drive or partition of one as a primary scratch, does the scratch have a fast enough buffer (cache)? Current drives run 32 MB and 64 MB cache.
Is the file stored on a fast disk?
If you work on large files consider storing them on a RAID 0 for while working on them and storing the final some where else.
CS 6 should be helpful but you need lots for RAM I would not run a system and work on large files with 8GB of memeory 16GB should be your minimum.
If you are working in a professional envoronment then you really need a professional set up and make your life easier and save money in the time you save.
It is expensive to set up but wotth it in the end.

  • How much disk space do i need for Windows

    Okay looking to partition my hard drive to install Windows 7 using boot Camp, my question is this;
How much hard drive space to I allocate for Windows?
I only need to instal 2 programs to use with windows, I am thinking of doing 100 GB, that will leave me 831 GB for the imac.
    thanks

    Hi,
100GB sounds like a good choice.
For Windows 7 alone usually about 40GB are recommended. Plus the amount of disk space for the programs and files you use in Windows.

    2. You can increase the redo logfile size.Currently its around 48MB, incresae it to 100MB.While he probably should increase his redo log size, that will have zero impact on the amount of disk space consumed by the archivelog files. If the OP is generating 1gb/min of redo, he will consume 1gb/min of disk space for archivelogs. It may be with 1 ea. 4gb file every 4 minutes or 1 ea. 256mb files every 15 seconds, but it still comes out the same in the end. Redo file size influences how often a log switch occurs and the size of the individual archivelog files, but it has no bearing on the amount of redo that has to be archived over a given period.
