Disk space - huge portion not accounted for

I am running a mini server (mac 3,1). 10.9.2 ans server 3.0. My server service data is on an external disk. The startup drive is a 500GB drive. Doing Get info on that drive shows a capacity of 499 GB. 412 GB used, 86 GB free.
Looking at all the files on the Starup drive, the tolal space used according to Finder is 245 GB. I used a utility (InVisible) to show all invisible files, and an additional 13 GB of content appeared (private, usr). This gives me a total of close to 260 GB. Why is my drive showing only 86 Gb free, it should be closer to 245 - 250 GB.
I did maintenance and cleaning on the startup drive using Onyx before taking these stats, that freed up about 4 GB.
Any suggestions on how to free or see what is taking all this space? Thanks in advance.

You can use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • How to restrict disk space when using time machine for client backup on server?

We have 10 OS X SL Clients backing up on xserve SL with TM. Now 1 TB disk space is used and disk is full. The clients get the massage that the latest backup could not be finished due to target disk full. Clients run just OS X Standard Software plus Parallels with windows (max. 50 GB per client)
Why does TM not delete oldest backups like with external USB HD?

I have a Nomad Jukebox 3 - no really. It runs like a champ!? I use it most often for recording 44KHz audio. I just did the auto-update thing for the mediasource and plugins, blah blah blah. Now I can't sync a large recording (about .4GB)?to my computer. It gives me this error:?There is not enough disk space at the destination for this transfer. this is obviously a bug because it was working before the update. Please HELP!!

I have the same problem - a Jukebox 3 which usually refuses to transfer files over about a gig.
My old system disk was 30Gb, and it always worked OK with that, but when I reinstalled everything on a 20Gb disk, I got problems. I slightly suspect it may get confused when it checks for disk space by a disk that's a lot bigger than was available back when the Jukebox 3 came out. If anyone knows how to fix this I'd be most grateful - last time I had to record the audio in through my soundcard!

  • Not enough disk space problem!, Not enough disk space problem!

Hey Guys, how come when I try to download additional content it says I have to delete unnecessary files because I don't have enough disk space although I have 10 gb of disk space left, the additional content total is 6.8 gb. Something also does not make sense because the additional voices loops I want to download takes up 907 mb, (says this on the right of page) but at the end the total is as stated 6.8 gb.
    Really Urgent, Please Reply!!!!!!!!

You need a bit more than twice the download size on disk, because the successful download need to be installed,  which briefly doubles the need for space.

  • Twice as much disk space used on external HD for TM than internal HD

Disk Utility shows the amount of disk space used by TM as 86 GB whereas the HD only shows 45 GB used. Also, the number of files and folders have nearly doubled in size. This from only two days of using TM.
My Seagate FreeAgent Go External Hard Drive for Mac - 500GB, USB 2.0, FireWire 800, FireWire 400 external hard drive has been partitioned into two segments, one for TM, the other for SuperDuper.

Since TM keeps previous version of things you've changed or deleted, in addition to everything currently on your system, yes, it will use more space.
But to be twice the size in two days is clearly not right. Chris is probably correct, that TM has been backing-up the SuperDuper "clone" as well. If so, you can delete the backups of it -- see #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If that's not the case, see #9 there for a way to find out what's taking up so much space. If you find things being backed-up that you don't recognize, post back with the name(s) and location(s); somebody here will likely know what they are.

  • DU does not account for some files in ../SyncServices/Local/DataReferences

There are 9 files in my $HOME/Library/Application Support/SyncServices/Local/DataReferences/022 directory, as listed in ls -l. When I run du * in this directory, it only accounts for 3 of the 9 files. Using diff, it appears as though the files du ignores are duplicates. My first thought was that there are links to other files in this directory, but ls -l@ shows nothing out of the ordinary.
Anyone know what is up with these files? The have similar names like:
    CF0057CF7C5E.com.apple.MobileSync

If the identical files have the same number in column 1, then they are NOT 2 files with the same name, but rather 2 directory entries pointing at the same file. These would be hardlinks, not symlinks.

  • Disk space full, desktop not loading

My work Mac Pro's startup disk is full, and when I login only the background and screensaver load. None of the keyboard commands do what they're supposed to except for force quit, and no toolbars or applications open (although after one restart iTunes tried to start itself up and I was able to get a toolbar from there and open up safari and a few other apps). How do I fix this problem?
The startup disk is one of four 2TB internal hdds

Install OS X somewhere for "Emergency system" of 30GB with all your system maintenance utilities.
    Clone your drive.
4 x 2TB and you load up the boot drive to full? HFS+ doesn't like it when gets down to 15% free or less.
Dont' use until it is cleaned up.
OmniDiskSweepr can help see if something abnormal is using too much space.
/Volumes/ is a good place to start looking.
    Any drive that didn't mount
Any torrent files or hidden files you don't know
NEVER run with only one system drive. A couple bootable backup clones and ONE that is ONLY used for maintenance and repairs.
YOu will want to use your 10.6 DVD but that lacks Finder
Maybe FSCK from Single User Mode
    Disk Warrior is a must
SuperDuper to clone your volumes - though I suspect and hope that you have two backup sets for each and every volume.
A couple off line external backup systems.
Room on one of your other drive for that "EDRIVE" of 30GB
You start for now with your OS X DVD, and maybe pick up a drive or two, FireWire even.
http://www.macsales.com/firewire - they also sell programs like TechTool Pro 5, Drive Genius 3, Alsoft Disk Warrior. All of those cost, but are also indespensible.
Force Quit is sure to corrupt the hard drive directory of your system and require more work to repair the drive - a task for Disk Warrior.

  • Vanishing disk space 10.6.3 Server

I have Snow Leopard Server installed on a mac mini (dual hard drives). It is configured with two partitions, one for the Operating System and one for Time Machine backups for the 7 Macs in the office.
I keep losing free space on the OS partition (Time Machine is not backing up to this drive). I know the first culprit is usually a runaway log file. However, I simply cannot find a huge log file.
The math on the drive simply does not add up. I show that I am using less than 20GB on that partition but it is reporting that I am using 50GB! I should have 50GB free!
Now when I restart I reclaim all the space and it is fine. Over the course of a day I can sit there and watch my free space tick away again.
One time it got so bad that I got the dreaded low disk space warning. It got down to zero free, but then bumped back to 900MB free and this repeated.
Here is a picture to hopefully help.

    Any Ideas?

I tried whatsize, Grandperspective ets. The programs are just not seeing the files.
I even ran Grandperspective through sudo in the terminal and while it showed other users files now, still did not show 45GB of Miscellaneous files."
    These misc space is:
*Miscellaneous used space:* All used space that is not accounted for by the size of the scanned files. This includes the following:
Files that were not scanned, either because the scanned folder was not at the root of the volume, or the user did not have permissions to access all subfolders.
Files that are excluded by the filter (if any).
Disk space that is not accounted for because the Logical file size measure is used, which underestimates the space that files actually take up.
Low-level file system data, needed to store amongst others the folder hierarchy.
I am going to try a repair booting from the install disc to see if there is any corruption or something once I can kick the other users off for the day.

  • Can I limit disk space for an account?

    Hi
I have set up a non-admin account for my partner to use, but she is in the habit of saving lots of video files which is eating up my disk space. Is there any way I can set a limit to the disk space available to her account?
    Cheers, Brett l-s

Yes. Mac OS X supports the notion of user quotas for disk space. Since you are asking the question, I can presume that you probably aren't familiar with the notion of a UNIX disk quota and will probably be a little disappointed that enabling it will require some mucking about in the UNIX shell using Terminal.app.
Namely, use 'edquota' to setup the quotas for various users, use 'quotaon' on turn on quotas, and 'repquota' and 'quotacheck' to report on the disk and user quota status. Pretty much like BSD UNIX.
Be forewarned, however, that Finder knows nothing about quotas -- it cannot tell a user that they have one, it can't tell how close they are to filling it up, and when it can't copy/write a file because a user's over their quota, it has no idea why it can't do it and just tells the user that "something" is wrong.

  • How to set the limit for the warning 'running out of disk space'

I am wondering if there's a way to set the number of GB before I get the system warning 'running out of disk space'.
I saw this question asked in 2010 and it did not get an answer. It was archived so I am asking again. I know how to monitor the available space on my startup disk, and how to empty the trash to clear up disk space. I am looking for an OS X setting that I can change.

My guess is that you want to lower the limit. IMHO I think the limit is alreay too low.
If you are seeing this warning regularly then your disk is severely overfull and needs to be replaced with a larger one.
Running the free space low eenough to get the warning greatly increases the chances for disk corruption. Once the disk gets corrupted then then next thing that happens is data lose.
You have a serious problem with your Mac that should be dealt with immediately.
Backing your data up would also be a good idea if you are not already doing that.

  • Problems saving pdfs in IE "not enough disk space"

After updating Adobe Reader from 9.... to Adobe Reader X 10.1.23 I cannot save a pfd file opened with a browser, wether using Internet Explorer 8 nor the actual firefox. The error message is something like .." not enough disk space" , what's not right!!!
    I reinstalled 'Reader X - no solution
I deinstalled Reader X and installed the old Version 9 - saving is no problem!!
What can I do ??? Thanks..

when you make a dvd using dvdsp, you need to build it on a local drive before dvdsp can burn the dvd.  So more than likely, .... there's "not enough space" on that drive.
You should always have a minimum of 10% free space on ALL drives and at least 20% free space on your startup drive.  Having less space can create all sorts of problems and the data on the drive can get corrupted and unusable.

  • Safari could not download the file "Firefox 20.0.dmg" because there is not enough free disk space.

What does this error message mean. I have pleanty of free disk space - Safari could not download the file “Firefox 20.0.dmg” because there is not enough free disk space.

That misleading error message can be the result of moving a download while it's in progress. Right-click the download package and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. The file you downloaded may be in the folder that opens.

  • Reporting of free disk space improper for my Mac SSD

Frequently I find that the reported free disk space shown on the desktop for my Mac SSD is wrong since I upgraded to 10.10.3
This is just a reporting issue since the disk utilities I have checked show the correct amount of free space.
To fix it I go to preferences and open Time Machine and turn it off, and then back on.....this has corrected the issue.
Just reporting this in case others are having the same issue.

OK, So I dl'd that and ran it and it only showed an additional swap file directory called "Private" that had about 3 gigs, still about 27 gig's missing.....
In this program the bottom bar shows 74.2 capacity, 61.5 used, 12.6 available
    Big directories (anything over 1gig)
    13.7 users
    10.7 Lib
    5.28 Apps
    2.53 System
    2.93 Private
    About 35 gigs
then a bunch under 1 gig that total less than 1 gig,
so say around 25.5 unaccounted for ?????????????
nice program but still wondering where my hard drive space has gone.....

  • Not enough disk space message occurs by installation or CD/DVD burning

    Hi,
When i want to install a game or burn a movie then i will get the message that there is not enough disk space which is not true because the disk space on my laptop is about 55 Gb and on my external hard drive i have still about 95 GB left.
Why do i have this problem and what is the solution?
    Greets

As far as I know some burning applications uses a temporary data folder to copy the files form the CD on the HDD and after successful burning procedure this files will be deleted.
Mostly such temporary data folder is placed on system partition C.
I assume you have partitioned you HDD and the space on the C is not enough.
    Change it.
