Disk space rapidly decreasing.

Okay, sounds like there is some great ideas here, many of which I should have listened to before I acted. That being said, I want to know what my options are, if someone could help. I have the original MacBook Pro (first w/Intel processors) with a hard drive that must have been 100GB (has 92+ that I have access to). Like another user mentioned in this thread, I could barely load 500+ MB updates without getting an error message. I am buying a new laptop within the next 60 days and have access to use other things to get work done (have an iMac and iPad).
In order to free up some disk space I used Omni Disk Sweeper and located what I thought were things that I can eliminate to make some space. There was a folder called "downloads" that I thought was just all the downloads of files and such that were Word documents and other things like that. I have cleared that before, just not in a while so I thought that was okay. After doing that and a restart, nothing happens anymore, I get the apple logo on the screen and the spinning broken circle, but that stays like that for over 10 minutes. Clearly there was something I didn't need to do. In reality, the only thing I would like to do is to deauthorize this computer from my iPods, iTouch, iPhone & iPad so that I can authorize them with my iMac. I do have a Time Machine backup on an external hard drive from about 6 weeks ago, but I can't get anything to work to attempt to get stuff off of this. Again, I don't really need any of the other stuff on the machine (iTunes, documents, applications, etc.), as I have access to it elsewhere. What I really want to do is to get the stuff on my iDevices to authorize with the new iMac. I don't know how I can deauthorize without getting access to the old Mac?

I could barely load 500+ MB updates without getting an error message.
What is the error message you were getting? Too full startup drive?

It is very unlikely that deleting the Download folder or files in the Folder would affect startup. Besides, that would hardly have freed up much disk space. Do you recall whether you removed anything else?

Are you able to boot from the install disk? If you could you might consider reformatting and erasing the internal drive (post back for step by step directions), installing the OS and restoring data, if that is what you'd like to do.

Yes, it would be a 100 GB HDD as that model came with 80, 100, 120 GB (5400-rpm) or 100 GB (7200-rpm). It is not unlikely that you have a failing HDD in that computer. The average life of a laptop HDD is 3 to 5 years, and you are right in the middle of that range, so that is a real possibility.
Please post back with information requested, as well as with anything I missed in your question and any further questions.

  • Disk space keeps decreasing! Help :(

    Hello,
I don't understand what's going on with my MacBook. After closing Safari last night, it informed me I was getting low on drive space and so I checked it and it was literally 0Kb. Normally I have at least 8gb free so I don't know how this happened? When I began to delete things I didn't need (pictures, etc) to see if it made any difference, I literally watched the numbers keep falling right in front of me.
I restarted, and the space went up to just over 1gb.
After reading some forums, I downloaded Disk Inventory X and it showed me the invisible /private file. I read on a Mac forum that it's normal for this file to become a few gigs to 5 or 6, but mine is 36.9gb. Is this my problem? I don't understand what is going on. When I restart my computer the disk space usually goes back up, and as it stays on it decreases.
What is going on here and how do I fix it? Thanks

The LaunchDaemon is trying to invoke the CarboniteStatus application.
Follow the steps below to manually remove the Carbonite program files:
    1. Restart your Computer.
    2. Control click on Finder on the dock and select Go to Folder.
    3. Type /Library/Application Support/ into the window that appears.
    4. Move the Carbonite folder to the Trash.
    5. Control-click on the Application Support folder in the header bar and click the Library folder.
    6. Go to the Contextual Menu Items folder and move CarboniteCMM.bundle to the trash.
    7. Go back to the /Library folder and go into the LaunchAgents folder.
    8. Delete com.carbonite.launchd.carbonitealerts.plist and com.carbonite.launchd.ca rbonitestatus.plist.
    9. Go back to the /Library folder, and to into LaunchDaemons.
    10. Move com.carbonite.launchd.carbonitedaemon.plist to the trash.
    11. Go back to the /Library folder, and to into PreferencePanes.
    12. Move Carbonite.prefPane to the Trash.
    13. Restart your computer again.
    14. Empty your trash.

  • When working on Illustrator project, it generate many file AIVMFile, 16Mo per file for almost 7Go of disk space, and decrease performance.

Illustrator is installed on a windows Laptop, Windows Seven, Illustator 16.0.3. (last update available).
We tried to reinstall the application, but no effect.
Is this nomral that Illustrator create so many file, hundreds in a few hours, and takes 3 to 7 GO space disk ?
When I close Illustrator, all files are deleted.
When working with illustrator the computer is slow.
    Thank

I am aware of the filesystem defragmentation, but most require offline operation and if you pre-write the disk space you need, then this is only going to be required if the file grows a lot further than you assumed.
The myths about filesystems suchas ext3 and XFS being "good" at locality and never needing de-fragmentation are unfortunately all incorrect and based upon the average user's use of text files and other relatively small files. Other filesystems on UNIX are better or worse than these two. In a server environment with a 24 hour operation, there is no down time available to perform defrag, unless it is scheduled or you use an HA solution that allows it. By far the simplest solution is to pre-write the file as fast as possible.
The effects of doing this are marked:
    1) Write your file
    2) defrag it;
    3) Copy the key/data pairs from the file to yet another file, but this time in key sorted order (traverse the original, write the new one);
    4) Defrag this new file and compress the keys etc
Then measure the performance of file traversal. Here you will reap the benefit of allowing the underlying operating system/file system to manage the reads and writes as it will almost always perform track reads/writes.
Of course if your database access is entirely random, then the benefit is reduced, but even so, the locality of allocation will reduce the disk dancing required until your data is in cache and the trickle deamon will be more efficient.
Hence, the ability to hole fill is a trivial piece of code that is filesystem agnostic and entirely backward compatibile (as if you don't make a call to do it then it will just behave as it always has). Something as simple as DB->pre_alloc(DB, sizeinMb); would do it (little point in doing this for less than megabytes).

  • 10.5.1 takes about 36GB of disk space

    Hi there,
Since the upgrade I've noticed that my total available disk space has decreased from about 38 GBs to 1.08 GBs. My iDisk space has reduced from about 8 GBs to 1.03GBs.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Anyone got any ideas how I can get my disk space back other than do a clean install to 10.5.0?
Your advice would be much appreciated.

Download Baseline 1.0 from http://www.mildmanneredindustries.com/baseline/ . It shows the size of every folder that it has permission to enter. For complete results, enable the root user, log in as the root user, and then run the program. That approach lets you see everything.
There is a long thread about this topic in the Tips & Hints section of www.macfixitforums.com . It will show you where people often find unexpectedly large files.

  • "Not enough disk space" when there seems to be (+ rapid memory consumption)

[Note: I originally posted this in the iDVD section, but due to an answer I got there to another question and further conversations with my daughter, figured out this is probably an iMovie question?]
I'm a newbie to iDVD and iMovie and Forums (my last Mac was a Performa 6360--still using it for the family budget). I got my daughter a MacBook as a graduation gift. She is using it to combine movie inputs from a wedding/reception that come from digital camreas and a couple of video cameras. We went to Flip4Mac to get the necessary software/features to import .wmv files (only way we could download one of the video cameras was by going from PC to Mac--can't remember if it was a Sony or Canon).
Issue: When she tries to import vidoes into iMovie HD 6.0.3 which have already been transferred to her computer, she gets: "The file could not be imported: There is not enough disk space to import Macintosh HD/Users/julie/pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2007/Roll8/CIMG1442.AVI" [She says this is about a 4 min. clip.]
Basically the question is how to get more room on her disk to import and to save? She seems to only be able to Save--she can't Save Project as an option because it says she doesn't have enough disk space (she's already deleted the Trash). Help says you need to have more than 400mb of free space or it gets difficult but the indicator shows 28.8GB free space left...so there seems to be some kind of disconnect?? (Or maybe we're talking apples and oranges?)
[Even more disturbing, just in the last couple of days with only a little time spent on the computer, the 28.8 GB has dropped to 2.3GB--obviously there is something she is doing that she is not aware of or shouldn't be doing that is consuming memory at a rapid pace.] On top of that, she also gets the same error message when she tries to burn the project onto a disk using iDVD???
I went through the first 5 pages of the forum and couldn't see a similar problem, but then I may have not known what to look for?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...she's trying to give the DVD as a Wedding gift--somewhat belated.

    Hello Karstn Schluter,
This is fm's daughter who is havin ghte difficulites. at the end you tell me to try to answer 1-8 so i will try.
1- how can you tell if the avi is containing divx? or not?? do I need to just keep this in mind when importing these files
2- I have not brought in an external drive. I did try making my laptop computer a harddrive so I could import my imovie poject to my eMAC at one point, but it was not allowing me to do that either. Because I had to have it in DVD form or something
3- No I did not segment the internal drive....sorry How do you do that??? Right now I am trying to find out what is taking up all the memory and Hard Disk Drive space....i do not know how to do that either....Do you know how???
4-Yes I know flip4mac is for wmv....I guess what that question was emplying was that I also have wmv files that I am trying to import to imovieHD and that is not working either...I can get my avi to get into imovieHD, but not my wmv. files
5-THank you for the tip with the trash then another question to this one how do you delet projects that are taking up memory that are no longer in use?
6-Thank you for the tip...so then ignore the not enough disk space.....how can you alter the disk space so that you can save the project under save project as and not just save project?
7- Sorry my dad was miss informed I cannot import the wmv. files to imovie and I cannot import imovie to iDVD I only have transferred one and then all of the other files are not seen as movies so I can not import them?? Does that make since
8- When we were useing the Sony Camera originally we could not import the video to the MAC because it did not have the correct firewire cable and it would not been read onto the MAC computer. So, we have to buy the flip4mac equipment so that I would be able ot download the inoformation to the computer by a wmv.file dvd so we are having difficulites trying to import that file.
I hope these answers clear up the question a little bit more and sorry that your answers brought out more questions. Thank you very much for helping me. I was using a different program in my college class so changing to imovie and idvd has been a huge struggle for me. Thank you once again.

  • Disk Space decreasing

    Hi everyone,
When I leave my computer on for a while, say 3 or 4 days, I notice that my free disk space begins to decrease, even when I have not installed any programs or altered anything. Is this normal? Thanks a lot.

Yes, Mac OS X normally does dynamically manage files in memory.
If you let your machine sleep, it may not clean up logfiles, though some thing it does. You can clean those logfiles with Macjanitor:
    http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill/macjanitor.html
You can use the screen saver instead of energy saver to ensure you don't need to use Macjanitor and are leaving the computer on in the middle of the night.
In addition, check this article on what may be eating up space:

If you are seeing daily increases and decrease in your disk utilization (for example it increases during the day/overnaight but in the morning the disk space has recovered what you are seeing is the impact of Tar optimization.
The Tar Persistence manager is the underlying storage mechanism for CRX. Data is stored in append only tar files. This means the when you update a node or property the new values are written to the Tar files, the indexes are updated to point to the new location, but the old data is also still left in the file. This mechanism allows for a much faster write mechanism. So the more you frequently you update existing content in your repository the larger you Tar files becomes.
There is a process called Tar File Optimization that by default is scheduled to run from 2 AM to 5 AM server time. This process identifies all the orphaned data in the Tar files and deletes, there by reducing the size of the tar files on disk.
So if you are in heavy content migration mode, or moving large amounts of content between instances you can see large swings in your disk space utilization as the Tar file balloons up during the day and then shrinks back down over night. In some cases depending on how large your repository is the 3 hours allotted by default is not sufficent to complete the optimizaiton so you may not be recovering all your disk space. During normal production operations this will normally average out over time and the 3 hour window is enough. However during periods of heavy usage, especially during QA or content migration you may find that your tar files are ever increasing in size. If that happens you need pick a period of time over say a weekend and trigger the Tar File optimization to run until complete to recover as much of your disk space as possible.
See http://helpx.adobe.com/crx/kb/TarPMOptimization.html for details on Tar File Optimization.
As someone else pointed out you may also have an issue with your data store which requires a different clean up method.
Another possible culprit is your Lucene index files. Depending on your data model and repository size you can swings in your Lucene indexes because like the Tar File it periodically cleans itself up and large amounts of content change can cause this cycle to become more pronounced.
This blog post dicusses in more deapth both Tar File Optimization and Data Store garbage collection. http://blog.aemarchitect.com/2013/06/17/importance-of-aem-maintenance-procedures-for-non-p roduction-boxes/

  • Rapidly disappearing disk space - 19GB windowserver.log?

    Hi,
I noticed that my disk space has been rapidly disappearing recently - now at the rate of 50-100MB per minute!!! Couldn't figure out for the life of me where it was going. I ran Disk Inventory X and it is showing that the file windowserver.log is currently up to about 19GB! I don't even know what this file is for but I know that it's not supposed to be THAT big. And continuing to grow every minute. After a restart I jump back up to about 43GB of free space but it doesn't last. Also the comp (MacBook Pro 2.16 Core2 Duo) is running really hot, currently between 145 and 150 F with only finder and firefox running. Can anyone tell me what is going on here?
    Thanks.

    Hi--
Go to your System Preferences and look at the "Accounts" preferences. Select your user account on the left hand side, then look at the "Login Items" tab. If you have any items there besides "iTunes Helper", make a note of what they are and delete them, then reboot and see if the problem goes away. If it does, add back your login items one by one and see if one of them causes problems again.
If you've installed new software recently, and see an item in that list that relates to you new software, just delete it and reboot, maybe it's just that one piece of software.

  • Empting the Trash - decreases disk space ?

I may be going crazy - but - I have noticed very recently then when I empty the Trash, my available disk space appears to decrease ? This is self defeating - as I am trying to free up disk space to improve performance. Is something happenning becasue my disk is getting very full ?
Have run Disk Utility on the disk - all reported to be ok.
    Recently upgraded to Office 2004.

I have a separate discussion going regarding upgrading to Entourage 2004 - which appears to be dreadfully slow - while synchronising. I have just discovered that something is generating multiple files, all day long in the Entourage Temp folder - files named "Blck-xxxxxx" (where xxxxxx is numeric). Anywhere between 250kB and several MB - many of them. When I delete a few files elsewhere and empty the Trash I suspect that Entourage is racing ahead of me - taking up more disk space. This would explain the unexpected Trash emptying phenomena. But - any ideas on why Entourage 2004 should be generating the Blck files like mad (Entourage X didn't as far as I know - or at least must have deleted them...)?
    Thanks

  • Emptying trash decreases hard disk space ?!

I downloaded some music files from limewire and didn't like it, so I deleted the files from my shared folder where they were stored and from ITunes, then emptied the trash. Emptying the trash actually decreased the available space on the hard disk (from 26GB to 24,75GB) instead of increasing it. Does anyone know what happened and how do I find those files in order to delete them permanently and regain my original disk space? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Puni.

There's a nifty little application called WhatSize that will list everything on your HD by size. A great little application to help manage where your HD space is going.

we r facing problem of low disk space error......upm.db file incresing 1 to 2 gb per week.
if this continues our disk will get full & system may get crashed...... pls help

Probably most space is being consumed by CSCOpx\log.  To quickly cleanup some logs, you can manuall run the command:
    logrot_trunc c:\Progra~1\CSCOpx\log\syslog.log
Assuming this is the correct path on your server.  You can also schedule log rotation to occur on a regular basis to avoid the logs growing past a certain point.  This can be scheduled under Common Services > Server > Admin > Log Rotation.
Might also be a good idea to check if you have debugging turned on under the various modules in LMS to decrease the speed of the log growth by setting the logging to a lower level.

Software Update: Java for OS X 2013-002 1.0
This update, upon booting, has caused my disk space to fill up and my system freezes up. The same happens to my coworker's computer. We both watch the remaining disk space decrease and the "spinning rainbow appears" and we must restart. What do we do?

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Hard disk space in macbook pro 2011 keep on decreasing Bytes by Bytes . Help !!!!

I have a similar problem-  I keep tunning out of disk space. • BRAND NEW Macbook Pro with decreasing disk space

I recently bought a Macbook Pro with supposedly around 750 GB of disk space. However, when I checked it before I installed windows on it, I noticed that there was only about 430 GB available.
I downloaded less than 10 apps, and only brought over less than 50 GB worth of pictures, audio and movies from my Windows.
Can someone PLEASE explain to me how I managed to acquire almost 300 GB worth of this 'other'? An explanation besides 'things that don't fit into other categories' would be very helpful.
This is less than a week old and there's almost nothing new that I've created or worked on with this Macbook. My apps don't take up that much space, I don't have backups, Time Capsule is NOT on, and the most I've done with changing system preferences is to change my wallpaper and screensaver. So where is this all coming from? I honestly feel that I've been cheated of the 300 GB which was almost the disk space of my PC that ran Windows! And I never even used up that much since I bought my Windows!
At any rate, how do I get RID of it?

since installing lion i have noticed a lost of  free disk space on the build in harddrive even if i save as  little as possible on it.  i havea 1TB external hd....any ideas why??

You can also make use of inotify to see disk activities. Install inotify-tools, then run:
    inotifywait -m -e modify -e create ~/
Monitor for a while, while the free disk space is descreasing.
If that didn't find anything, add --recursive to the command but it can take a while to set up. See the inotifywait(1) man page for details.
My guess is some log files too, e.g. ~/.xsession-errors.
