Disk space remaining

The dialog box, indicating remaining disk space on your hard drive located at the bottom of the finder window is gone in OS 10.8.  How does one keep an eye on how much space remains on the hard drive or any external device for that matter?

Under Finder > View > Show View Options there should be a checkbox called "Show item info"   However, these details (including free space on each drive) are displayed beneath each item on your desktop, not in a discrete window at the bottom of the screen.
If that's no longer there in Mt. Lion, then do Get Info on the drive(s) you want to see details about.

  • HELP! "Insufficient Disk Space Remaining in the Capture Scratch"?!

    Please Help Me ASAP!
im not like lierally dieing but i do need help urgently with Final Cut!
I am trying to capture my video from the camera and the message pops up that says "Insufficient Disk Space Remaining in the Capture Scratch".
    So I have 2 questions:
    1) What does it mean
    2) What do I do to fix it?
im cluless here guys! any input asap would be so greatly appreciated! thanks
    Ben

It means that you do not have sufficiant space on your scratch disk to capture your video.
What have you designated as your scratch disk? Which drive? Get Info on that drive to see how much space you have available. When you Capture, your Capture Window will give you info on how much space your drive has, and how much video (in time) you put on it
The solution is to get more space. Like clearing stuff off your drive or getting a new one
If you are capturing video to your system drive, in other words, this is your scratch disk, this is not reccomended. Designate another drive, either internal or firewire external as your scratch disk.
For more info on the scratch disk and how to target it, consult your FC manual and online help

  • Insufficient disk space remaining in the capture scratch

I’m using a PowerBook G4, 1.25GHz processor with 2 GB DDR SDRAM whit Final Cut Express version 3.5.1. I tried to capture footage from my camera and received a message, “insufficient disk space remaining in the capture scratch.” I moved all the files: Audio render files, Autosave vault, Capture scratch, etc to a new folder on my desk top, but still get the same message when I try to capture. To capture, I click the play button on the screen; hit the mark in button at the point I want to start and the mark out button at the end. Then I click the clip button followed by the ok button on the log clip dialogue box. The program then goes through what I assume to be the capturing process leading to the error message. How do I overcome this? Thank you.

    Hi Geoffemn
The solution is to buy an external hard disk. Save the files to that. It does nothing to move the files from AV or scratch disk to a folder on the desk top. It still uses the same amount of space on the Power Book's HD. Of course you can look over current files on the HD and delete ones not needed. But that's a temporary fix. Large HD's have come way down in cost per GB. Go buy one. It should run at a speed of at least 7200 RPM and have firewire.

  • Insufficent disk space remaining in capture scratch

    Hi all,
I am capturing for a small project off dvcam. I have run into a problem where I am unable to capture more material, I am getting an error message and the
prompt: insufficent disk space remaining in capture scratch .
what does this mean and how do I free up space? I have 100 gb left on my external drive, so I don't get it...
    Grateful for advice.
    LOF

Turn off any limiting of file size you may have checked on in the scratch disk settings, and also be sure it's that external drive that is selected as your scratch disk.
The external drive you have also must be formatted Mac OS Extended.

  • How much hard disk space remains?

Sorry, the Missing Manuel for Lion isn't available until the end of the month, but I have a lot of basic questions.
With Snow Leopard when i opened a Finder window at the very bottom of the window pain was information on how much memmory was being used by whichever folder I had opened.  I know I can hit Tab to have a window pop up and tell me, but I liked that old feature built into the Window.  Is there a way to change the setting back so that when I open a finder window I get a reading on how much hard disk space is being used by X file?

Select Show Status Bar from the Finder's View menu. As far as space used by any one file that is listed under the Size column in the Finder when using List View.

  • Disk space problems

Hi guys, have looked around everywhere for some help on this topic but no-one seems to be having the same problem and it's quite hard to know what to search for:
Have been trying to free up space on my HD as I'm aware it's not good to have anywhere near only 10% of free space. The problem I have is deleting large folders and files and emptying trash is not increasing the available disk space at the bottom of the finder window.
I have even used programs like MacKeeper which found and deleted 30GB of unwanted/unnecessary files yet when I go back to check in finder (or Disk utility for that matter) disk space remains the same.
One thing I have noticed however is that "Macintosh HD" seems to have 30Gb of free space and my personal folder seems to have roughly the same amount of free space making around 60GB total free space but this is not picked up on disk utility.
I have seen some comments on the web about filevault causing problems but don't really know where to begin...
My computer does seem to be performing much better since I've started cleaning it up so am now wondering whether the free space has been increased but it's just being reported wrongly
Any input would be much appreciated..
    Cheers!

Your FileVault is saved by OS X as a sparsebundle (something like "onjegolders.sparsebundle"), and each time you log into your account it has to be mounted. This mounted volume always expands when you create new files in your Home folder, but it doesn't shrink when you delete files. When you log out, OS X checks if there's free space in your sparsebundle, and it will try to shrink your Filevault to recover any free space.
For example, my FileVault is usually under 1GB. Last week, I had a lot of videos in my Home folder that I was trying to burn to DVD. It caused my FileVault to expand to 27GB. After I burned the videos to DVD, I deleted them and emptied my Trash bin, then restarted my computer. When I logged back in, my FileVault was back down under 1GB.
If your FileVault doesn't reclaim space after rebooting, you might try to verify/repair your sparsebundle (➚). Other people indicate it may be a matter of corrupted files (➚) preventing FileVault from shrinking. If you have less than 15GB of data in your FileVault, you could also just try turning off FileVault temporarily, and then turning it back on to force it to build a new sparsebundle.

  • Disk usage remaining ?

    Hi
On Sunday i am planning to record the f1 & then the last priemer league game on on sky sport as i have to go out so i thought i better delete a few recording to make room which i did & now have 46% remaining in the settings menu.
Then we decided to download a hd film to watch tonight which has now downloaded & the disk space remaining is still 46% so part of the disk space must be reserved for downloads.

Interesting post. I've never thought too deeply about where the downloaded stuff goes and simply assumed it gets lumped in with the recordings in which case you would indeed expect the free space value to go down if it's working correctly. There is some spare space on the disk though. We have a 160,000,000,000 byte disk which works out at approx 149GB. The disk is partitioned but most of the 149GB is allocated to just one of these partitions. 128GB of this is taken up by 128 files of exactly 1GB each in which the box stores the recordings - a kind of filesystem if you like. As I see it the free space indicator should relate to the free space in those 128 files. There's not much else on the partition; a few log files and a very important 64MB file, but that still leaves us with 20GB of free space. Ok, it could be for 20GB worth of logs (observation is based on a fresh install) but I suppose it could also be using this 20GB for the downloads. Mind you how big on average is a HD film file? I've seen some reports putting it at 8GB so on that basis you'd only be able to rent two at a time.
If I ever download one I'll whip the disk out and see where it's put it.
Anyhow, hope your recordings go ok!

  • What does error message when trying to burn DVD from iDVD mean "not enough disk space to burn the remaining assets"

I created a DVD in idvd and now when trying to burn to DVD using external burner, I get the error message
"not enough disk space to encode the remaining assets". I am using a brand new blank DVD.
I have read the help info on computer but hasnt proved helpful.
    Any suggestions?

iDVD requires a fair amount of disk space to carry out the encoding process; depending on your project, you may need to have over 25 GB free space on your startup hard drive.  How much free space do you have?

Software Update: Java for OS X 2013-002 1.0
This update, upon booting, has caused my disk space to fill up and my system freezes up. The same happens to my coworker's computer. We both watch the remaining disk space decrease and the "spinning rainbow appears" and we must restart. What do we do?

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

How full is your Mac's hard drive?

If you can't free up enough space by deleting items, get an external hard drive and move the files there. An absolute minimum of 25 GB is required by iDVD.

  • "iDVD needs more disk space to encode the remaining assets"

So I have to make copies of these counseling sessions that I'm doing for class and since I found out my Mac did not come with a DVD burner, I bought an LG External Super Multi DVD Rewriter. I used iDVD and created DVDs with my counseling sessions and was able to burn a couple that way. Then last week, I was going through my CDs in my Mac box and stuck the iLife CD in and it updated my applications. Since then, I've tried to burn a DVD from iDVD and it hasn't worked. A box comes up saying something like "not enough space for remaining assets" and when I click to get more information, it says "iDVD needs 7.765 GB of disk space to encode the remaining assets, but only 2.458 GB is available at "Macintosh HD".
Did I mess it all up by what I thought was updating the software? What can I do??

Hi - Double posting doesn't help - Medicine the same
iDVD and Mac OS need space to work to swap theirs temp. files.
My minimum is 25Gb free space on start-up hard disk - neither can use any other HDs
but only 2.458 GB is available at "Macintosh HD"
This is way to little - few things should be able to work and if so very slow and unstable.
    Free up more space.

  • Im trying to burn an iDVD and its saying that there is not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets.

Im trying to burn an iDVD and its saying that there is not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets. My main hard drive only has a few hundred Mb left on it so i bought a 1 Tb external hard drive and want to know how to make iDVD use the space on the external hard drive instead trying to use the main hard drive. Any help would be awesome! thanks

    Hi
    Yes - This is important.
Free Space - Must be on the Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk and can not be used on any other.
My safe level is a minimum of 25Gb free space - to let iDVD and Mac OS run OK.
This is due to that Mac OS X is in reality UNIX and there by needs lot's of temporary space for temp. files and so does the application iDVD. And this can not be addressed elsewhere.
So to free up space - one thing is to move iMovie Events to an external hard disk BUT THIS MUST BE DONE Right Else all can be lost ! !
    • Never move or adjust any folders Named - iMovie Events or iMovie Projects - on Desktop/Finder - links will breake and can be hard to impossibly to heal. ALL movings must be done within iMovie Application (it goes for iMovie'08 to 11)
    • External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange will NOT WORK FOR VIDEO - nearly everything else BUT NOT VIDEO.
