Disk space-simple question

This is a simple question, I think: I have an external drive (250GB) and have my iPhoto and iTune libraries over there. If I delete about half of my photos from the main library (on the desktop, G4, running 10.4.10) to free up some space, will I still have all my photos from the original main library on the external drive, and just as important, will I still be able to update the external drive as I add new photos to the main library.
Sorry, I know this is basic stuff but I want to be sure I can free up some space but not lose any photos in the process.
Thanks, Mike

Hi--
If you delete files on the computer they will still remain on the external hard drive. HOWEVER, if you are using a backup program that updates the external drive to reflect the G4 then it may erase whatever you've deleted on the G4. It depends on how the backup program is set (if you are using one).
If you are not using a backup program and just dragging the folders over to the external drive manually then you would have to be careful not to replace the folders that you want to keep on the external drive. Say for example you have your "Pictures" folder on the external drive. If you delete a bunch of photos on your G4 and then move the "Pictures" folder from your G4 to the external drive, it will REPLACE the "Pictures" folder on the external drive.
One way to get around this would be to make a seperate folder on your external drive EACH time you made a backup, and drop your "Pictures" folder into that.
Does this make sense?

iCloud does not provide general file storage or backup, so you cannot back up your Documents folder using it. You will need to find a third-party alternative - this page examines some options (some are free):

iCloud at basic level, with 5GB is storage, is free: you only pay anything if you want to increase the storage space.

  • Disk Space Question

    Hey all,
Just had a simple Q. I just recently ran out of disk space. And I have no idea how. Ive even gotten the messege Disk Too Slow. I was just curious if there is a program or even somethin already on the mini that can put everything in order of size. Or even somewhere where i can see whats taking up so much room. And yes Ive already checked the common music, movies and pictures folders, and they dont add up to the 80. And if programs are the case, than thats where i would like to see whats the largest. Who knows...maybe i gotta do it the hard way. (get info..get info...get info. Well Id appreciate any assistance...Thanks!

    Hey Drew,
Without really knowing the situation, I'd be first asking if you have an external HD to copy your internal to. Then I'd be saying that How did you fill up 80 gig's? I know, I know it can be done easy enough, and let us get real, are you downloading the whole internet? Don't! It will be there tomorrow, just bookmark it.
Then I'd be asking if you are running the normal cron scripts (daily, weekly, monthly), then have you deleted the languages part of programs that you don't use, then do you keep every version of a document that you create?
You know that certain programs use your HD for virtual RAM to store temporarily what you are creating as well as the system using a large chunk of the disk for temporary (virtual) memory? OS X is notorious for this. And this still doesn't explain your case.
I have over 5 days of music on my internal HD as well as a huge collection of Photoshop images that I use for Magazine full page adverts, I have no idea how many e-books of philosophical, biblical, theological, ancient, as well as many more, in the hundreds. AND I still have close to 50 gig's left. Do you copy all your DVD's?
It doesn't matter to me, you have to choose what is important to you what you want on your HD.
In other words you have to give us better information to have me or someone here to aid with your dilemma.
    Disk Too Slow message
Was this running what program? The internal HD of most of the original Mini's is not the best but I have never seen this message.
Sorry I'm of no help at the moment, but we'll get there, if not by me then by someone with more knowledge, and with more facts from you.

Thanks.  Unfortunately, I need to make a master DVD that can then be duplicated in bulk as a single layer disc.  This surprises me because I tried burning a different DVD project that has worked in the past which is also 4.5 GB and now I could not burn that either.  I also reencoded some material to get the new project down to 4.4 GB but it still would not burn.  Any ideas are appreciated.

  • Repair-VirtualDisk on Storage Spaces simple volume with retired disk?

    Hello,
Does anyone know if it's possible to retire a disk from a Storage Space simple volume, and use the Repair-VirtualDisk commandlet to migrate any data off the retired volume? It sounds like this is how it would work for a parity volume, but it's unclear if
Windows will try to move data off a retired disk of a simple volume. Or is repair actually performing parity recovery?
i.e. I want to replace disks in a simple volume with larger disks, and remove the old disks, is creating a new volume and migrating data the only way?
    Thank you!

    Hi,
Simple spaces are not resilient to disk failures, so we cannot add a new physical disk to replace the failed physical disk.
If you have backed up the files in that virtual disk, you could delete the disk then remove physical disks from the pool.

  • Storage Spaces - Remove Physical Disk from Simple layout

I am running Server 2012 RTM with a single storage pool containing 4 drives - 2.73TB, 1.36TB, 465GB and 148GB. There is a single virtual disk created, with thin provisioning, using the Simple layout, with a current maximum size of 2.73TB, and with 1.32TB
allocated. I want to remove the 148GB drive and replace it with a 465GB drive. When I right-click the 148GB disk and select Remove, I get a warning that Windows will attempt to rebuild any virtual disks that store data on the disk I'm trying to remove, and
that in order to succeed, the storage pool must have enough free space to accommodate the data from the disk I'm trying to remove. There is more than enough space in the virtual disk to accommodate whatever files may be stored on the 148GB disk - over 1TB
unallocated. However, when I confirm that I want to remove the disk from the pool, I get the following message:
This physical disk is used by one or more virtual disks that use the Simple (no resiliency) layout. To remove this physical disk, delete the following virtual disks: Simple
Surely the fact that it's a simple volume (rather than mirrored/parity) shouldn't affect the ability to move the data off the disk? It appears that disk removal is implemented as a simulated drive failure, forcing a rebuild of the resiliency data, rather
than by simply moving the data off the disk onto other available disks.
Additionally, after I've attempted to remove the disk, it's now been marked as 'Retired'.
Is there any simple way to remove this disk?

Same problem here, but I have some workaround for the problem.
But, even in Windows Home Server with its awesome disk extender (predecessor of Storage Spaces) you had to take the shares (meaning volumes in our case) offline so you could take out the disk from the pool.
Agree that it would make more sense to be able to remove disk from the pool online and the technology is most likely is already there: online cluster moves with defragmentation API was there for years and ReFS moves clusters online when it detects disk errors.
Anyway here is the process that may work for you if taking volume offline is an option in your case:
Try to remove physical disk in Server Manager - it will fail with abovementioned error, but the disk will go into "Retired" state.
Now provision a new Virtual Disk and a volume of your choice. Most likely you will pick the same disk and volume type as you already had, but this is the chance to change the topology. You should be able to do this since you have a lot of physical disk
space, especially if you used Thin provisioning.
It looks like at this point retired physical disk is not included into the new Virtual Disk provisioning, but it is still accessible via existing virtual disk.
Copy over all files from your old volume to a new volume.
    Now delete old Virtual Disk.
If you want - change disk name and volume letter of new virtual disk that you created and new volume to what you had before.
Now in Disk Manager take failing physical disk offline.
Replace failing disk, initialize new disk and add it to the pool.
Note: for me sometimes removing disk in via Storage Pool management GUI does not mark it as "Retired". In this case you can open PowerShell as Admin and assuming you want to remove PhysicalDisk2 - run the following command:
    Set-PhysicalDisk -FriendlyName PhysicalDisk2 -Usage Retired

  • Oracle 10gR2 on Solaris 10-Disk space question

I am going to install Oracle 10gR2 on Solaris 10 (x86). I need some advice on Disk space allocations. Altogether i've 10GB allocated for both Solaris and Oracle in VMware. My current allocation is this:
    / ----------->6177mb
    swap---------->1024mb
    /tmp ----------> 400mb
    /export/home------->2570mb
Is this enough to install a Basic Oracle Database? I am going to use it only for learning purposes.

It is Ok to start, but I suggest you to read the:

  • ISE VM install question related to Disk Space on VMDK

Hi all, and thanks in advance for any help/advice you can offer.
We recently licensed for 10 ISE VM instances in our environment. We are trying to install the 3945 OVA file and it is forcing us to allocate 600GB for the appliance in the VMDK.  Per the install guide, however, the PSN only requires 200GB of disk space. This install will be for a PSN persona eventually, once its built and added to a deployment. So do we have to burn 400Gb for this? I am being told by the VM team that once the 600GB is allocated in the VMDK, it will not be able to be changed later to 200GB. I am told it can expand, but there is no option to shrink the disk size to 200GB. Almost seems as though the OVA should have been made to require a 200GB partition, then you could expand that to 300GB for Admin persona's and more for Monitoring persona's. As it stands, without the option to shrink the drive size, we are wasting 400GB unless I am missing something. Thus I am asking for your help!
Install guide where VM disk sizing is specified is located at:

    Hello Prasad,
I am not sure what database are will be using in your system.
    Check SAPnotes # 799639 "Hardware Requirements" and  # 956921-  IDES ERP 2005 ECC 6.0.
    Here are databse approximations :
    The database sizes are:
      ORACLE: 200 GB
      MaxDB:  180 GB
      MSSQL:  150 GB
      DB2-UDB 150 GB
      DB2 on iSeries 240 GB
I can't comment on RAM size as i am not aware number of users, functionalities you will be using etc.
for this you can create a project under http://service.sap.com/sizing. You will get a close approximation.
This is a easy self guided procedure and its good, you can get a close hardware approximation thought this quick sizer tool.
Regarding processor its up to you. You can call vendors and check according to your budget.

  • Disk space (a "vs. iPhoto" question)

I'm a current user of iPhoto '08 but tried Aperture 1.5 in the past. I ended up reverting rather than purchasing the full version of Aperture because it seemed that iPhoto made better use of disk space than Aperture, due to Aperture's need to create a separate preview image. Plus with iPhoto I could click on a photo and see a representation of the full quality image, while in Aperture the previews are significantly lower quality.
Has anything changed in Aperture 2.0? With a library of 13,000 JPEGs, which program is more efficient with disk space?
Now let's say I switch over to shooting RAW images, which I would like to start doing more. Does that change anything?
Needless to say I am assuming Aperture 2.0 is fully compatible with Leopard and Time Machine. That was another concern I had with 1.5.

After you import your photos into iPhoto, you can delete the originals. In other words, if you have a folder full of images, and drag it to iPhoto, it will import them and make a copy of them. Then just delete the source folder. iPhoto makes multiple copies of photos - an original, a thumbnail version, and then a modified one that includes the edits that you make to the image. That way, you can always revert to the original version of the photo. It only makes a modified copy IF you have MADE modifications to the photos.

  • Question Re: Disk Space Utilization after Updates

After updating to 10.5.3 this weekend I began to wonder about something. The download was a bit over 500 MB... during the actual install a prompt appears stating this would occupy approximately 1.6 GB ( not MB ) of disk space.
Do updates actually take up ( in this instance ) an ADDITIONAL 1.6 GB of disk space on top of whatever amount of space the original program/application occupies on the hard drive?
    Thanks !

No. You need 1.6GB available for temporary and duplicate files which are deleted after the installation is complete.

  • "Internal disk space low" warning question

Last night I got the blinking amber light with the warning that Time Capsule's "Internal disk space is low". My hard drive is 1TB and has 375 GB of remaining space. My time capsule is 1TB and is used only for backing up my computer. How do I remedy this situation? Shouldn't I still have 375 GB left on my Time Capsule if it's just mirroring my hard drive? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Bob, thank you for your answer! When will TC start deleting old backups and the green light come back again and amber light stop flashing?
I have the same problem and tried resolving it through deleting some backups that i did not need. I have 1Tb Time Capsule with all latest firmware and recently got the amber light blinking and the message that the "Internal disk space is low. Your Time capsule is low on storage space". I checked and I have something like 58 Gb left. So I deleted some big files that I did not really need on TC via Time Machine interface - "delete all backups of ...". It should have freed up additionally more than 100Gb, but when I checked again the remaining disk space has not changed from 58Gb. I read in forums about how to get this free space by compacting sparsebundle via "hdiutil compact..." command in terminal, as discussed here - http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=84284
Is this the only way to free space on TC? Is there an easier way to get it? Should I go for it or should I just wait until TC starts deleting old files, not to mess with the whole process?
    Thank you in advance.

  • Rudimentary disk space question

    Howdy,
My HD is full but I've got an external hard drive with 500 free gigs attached. Everytime I try to save or render my files in FCP 5, it gives me an "Out of Disk space" error. I've gone into the system settings and cleared my hard drive as a scratch disk (leaving only my external hard drive), but I still can't render or save without getting this same error. How do I tell FCP 5 to treat this external hard drive as my new destination for everything I want to save?
    Thanks in advance.

Did you do the obvious and empty the Trash?
Where are your Render Files set to go to?
You can set the scratch disk destination in FCP by going to the menu bar: Final Cut Pro > System Settings.

  • Question about IMovie and Disk Space

Does iMovie have a cache or somewhere that it keeps stray files? I've noticed that sometimes when I empty the trash, I don't get my disk space back. I'm not quite sure why. I also read somewhere on these boards that iDVD uses double the size of your project in order to burn your movie. Do you get that space back or is there something I need to clean off from that. I bought an 80G MacBook 2 weeks ago and it appears that even that isn't big enough for me - sheesh.
    Thanks
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   80G; 1.5M ram

    Hello Stazya,
you have encountered iMovies non-destructive editing feature. A clip is only eliminated completely from the trash when no part of it is in your timeline any longer.
Video editing requires a lot of disk space (approx. 13 GB for 1 hr of DV video), so you might want to look at an external hard drive with firewire connection for storage. The other thing is not to import hours of video at a time.
iDVD requires that you have at least 15 GB of free disk space in order to create your DVD (it needs the space for the growing Temp file). The best way to proceed is to create a disk image of your DVD instead of burning directly to disc. When the disk image has been created successfully, you can delete the iDVD project and thus regain disk space.
    hope this helps

  • Question regarding Hard Drive Disk Space

I have a MacBook. only had it about 6 months ( a new Apple convert ) .... I upgraded to a 250 GB hard drive and keep my iTunes library on it. I noticed a performance change recently and discovered I was almost out of disk space. I have managed to free up approx. 7 GB but I continue to get that rotating beach ball icon much more often than ever before. I'm also noticing odd behaviors regarding my video... for example, if I click my desktop and do a click/drag, I everything suddenly is outlines and highlighted. This also occurs randomly on websites when I select something.
I thought perhaps the video issue could be caused by apps I've downloaded, but the only thing I've added recently was a program called iSale ( for eBay listings ) and a few iPod Touch applications from the Apps store.
Is 7 GB of free disk space insufficient, or would freeing up more space help ??
    Thanks !
    Chuck

7GB is way too low for a drive that size. you should have at least 25% of drive space free. you are undoubtedly suffering from disk fragmentation which can cause all sorts of issues. also you should check the integrity of your file system as it can easily be damaged because of low disk space. "run verify disk" in disk utility and if it reports any errors start from the install DVd and repair the drive (you can't do it while booted from the same drive). also, you need to free up some space and defrag the drive. one easy way to defrag is to clone your drive to an external then boot from the external and clone it back. ultimately you need either a bigger internal or an external to keep a lot of your data.
