Disk Storage Recommendation

Hi,
I have DB 90G
Archives log almost 50G
OS Windows Server 2003 R2, Standard Edition
DB: 10gR2.3
RAC Information
Name DRAC 5
Product Information Dell Remote Access Controller 5
I want to have Backup and i am out of space so we decide to get new disk and i want to know what is the best recommendation i can provide my Boss regarding Storage
the storage size:
how to hock up the new drive with the server and so on..
i saw this in Dell website
RD1000
RD1000, Ext USB Drive with bundled SW edit
RD1000 Removable Disk Media
QTY 1, Removable Hard Disk Cartridge for RD1000, 160GB Native/ 320GB Comp
is that ok?

My recommendation - use all resources of RMAN
It may save more disk space
1. Use compressed backupset
2. Use incremental backup

• Free disk space recommendation

Hi,
I have a question about free disk space recommendation. My system now has <25% free space at ASP3, I can't see any problems until now, but I think that I can some troubles in the future depending on DB growth, it isn't?
Have you any tip about this? Are there any recommendation in IBM i5 redbooks?
Thank you!
Best Regards,
André Honma

Generally you do not want to go much higher than 70 to 80% utilization.
This is because the system may need the free space for system operations, temporary storage and to allow for spikes in storage that may occur when processing heavy workloads, such as temporary work space or for transient files, journal receivers, system logs and spool entries (QSPL as opposed to SAP's own spooling).
Certain systems functions, such as dedicated physical file reorganizations, have specific minimum requirements with respect to the need for free space.
At this point, you are at 75% utilization which puts you right in the middle of the range where you really want to examine what is going on.
Usually when you hit 90% or above you will start to get messages from the OS about high storage.
You can free up space in several ways. Only keep journal receivers for as long as you need them. Once they are detached and saved offline (tape/remote jounals etc) they can be deleted. You need to have a strategy in place for this, however. Our shop archives a full save on a weekly basis, and all journal receivers up to that point (with a small margin retained for visibility) are deleted.
In addition, we use Datamirror's High Availability product which scrapes the journal receivers to mirror the production system on a hot backup. The receivers must remain on the system until they are replicated (this is also true for other High Availability products). This is usually near real-time, but it can be an issue if you do not manage it properly. (Given our weekly archive strategy, this is not an overriding consideration for us, but it may be important for those with a different strategy.)
SAP uses the reuse deleted records feature of DB2, but sometimes excessive amounts of deleted records build up due to spikes, especially in files like VBDATA and related files, or after purging older transaction history or deleting old clients. You can periodically reorganize physical files to reclaim deleted space.
You can also use RCLSTG (Reclaim storage) and RCLSPLSTG (Reclaim Spool Storage) to reclaim some temporary space.
However, RCLSTG should only be used if there is a specific need for it, as outlined in IBM's technical note: Overview of the RCLSTG Command
Periodic IPLs will also reclaim space, including spool space as if RCLSPLSTG had been run..
If you have other libraries on your system, you can also see if they are being managed wisely using the same ideas as you would use for your SAP libraries.
Within SAP itself there are tools to manage tables that are within the scope of you various SIDs and clients. When SAP purges data, however, it only does a soft delete via DB2 SQL, and a physical file reorg as noted above may be required to reclaim space at the OS level.
As the previous respondent noted, you should keep track of the growth of your system and then take whatever steps are necessary to bring storage down or increase storage.
You may also want to consider your storage strategy. We had been using full mirroring, and we were able to increase our effective storage by going to RAID-5, and therefore put off the need to buy more disk for a time.
Good luck.

• Move RAC database - need to format the disk storage having RAC and ASM

Hello,
Short story:
I need to format the disk storage used by a two nodes RAC with ASM.
How can I have the database working the new disk storage.
Long story:
We decided to change the external disk storage formatting from RAID 5 to RAID 10.
Configuration is: 2 Solaris nodes having Oracle software installed on each node and running with ASM
- node1: ORCL1 database and +ASM1 asm instances
- node2: ORCL2 database and +ASM2 asm instances
Available is a NFS storage with plenty of space.
Please tell me which would be the easiest way to move the database?
Thank you

Thanks alot for your answer.
1) There is more trouble: I also have the Voting disk and the OCR on the same (and only) SAN storage. Do you know about steps to backup/restore and/or recreate these?
As I said I have a NFS file system available with plenty of space.
2) I will need to backup the database, which way would you recommend: RMAN or EXP ?

Is this limitation by design? If we have a shared VHDX between two VMs, then I am not able to change the VM properties from SCVMM.

Hello,
that is a VMM issue.
If you did not deploy your virtual cluster from a VMM service template, VMM doesn't recognize the configuration.
Until MS got it fixed, you could use the workaround from system center central:

• Fresh Install of VM Server Disk Storage ?

Hi All,
I have the following questions to the expert:
I've installed VM Server 2.1 and I accepted the defaults. As such It used up all of my disk storage. It is my understanding that the next step (best practices) is to install the Linux Enterprise Server 5.1 . In doing so, there is one file system, I believe OVS of which I'm not certain where to install Linux OS ES 5.1.
Then I thought that I should have customized my VM Server install disk storage. (May use logical volume management ? or just leave a reasonable amount of disk space free for the Linux Install.
Then I thought that of removing VM Server, of which I have not found a way to remove the install of VM Server so that I could install VM Manager.
Please explain in detail best practices for install and removal.
Thanks

May use logical volume management ? or just leave a reasonable amount of disk space free >>>for the Linux Install. Following Oracle VM Server release notes,You cannot set up Logical Volume Manager (LVM) during the Oracle VM Server installation.
Workaround: Use pre-configured LVM volumes. Alternatively, you can temporarily exit the Oracle VM Server installer and create an LVM configuration from scratch. During the Oracle VM Server installation, press Alt + F2 to use the terminal, and run the lvm command. When you have finished creating the LVM configuration, press Alt + F1 to return to the Oracle VM Server installation.

• Automatic copy music files in music folder to the data disk storage

I got the shuffle as a Christmas present last year. It was working fine until today. Once I plugged to shuffle onto my laptop, it automatically copy all the music files in my music folder (my hardisk) to my shuffle. It copies them to my data disk storage, as if I want to back up them or transfer them to another computer. I don't know where to change the setting, as it used to work fine and I didn't change anything since then.
Anyone has any idea how to fix this? Basically now I can't use my shuffle as the memory stick.

Yes it is possible, and in fact quite easy.
Insert the flash drive in your computer and open it so it looks like a window. Over in iTunes, highlight the tracks you want (or CTRL+A to get a whole playlist) and drag to the open flash drive window.
If you normally run iTunes in full-scree mode, make it smaller so that you can do the drag.

• 'About this Mac' displaying definitely wrong disk storage of Apps

Hey guys,
My MacBook Pro is 15 inches late 2013, and recently I found it has some issues on displaying the disk storage.
As seen above, 'Apps' has 936.23GB which is definitely wrong!
Could someone explain this kind of issues?
Please help...

Well it just happened again, what is causing this, Spotlight? And this time I have a total different amount of apps all over sudden.
At least I did the screenshots this time. And the screens to show you that, even if I follow your steps after removing it from the privacy tab, I get nothing, even if I type indexing. I did see what you mean with the progress bar in spotlight on a screenshot online, but he didn't even need to type indexing he could type anything and it would show a progress bar. But for me that's not the case as you can see. Could an application be causing this? I'm disappointed that this came back this quick. Anyway as for my other question you can see that I am missing the memory tab if anyone knows why that is, I think my brother has the same OS version installed and its still showing for him.
Of course I am missing the screenshot with the removed applications folder but I didn't want to put more screens in here for an obvious step, I just added the one with apps in privacy to show that I am on the right page and doing the right thing in order to start a re-indexing.
Another question, can I throw in the whole Macintosh HD, because I get a warning when I try to do so...

Hi,
There are 2 steps you need to do - move DPM server and move data.
For move DPM server, you need to backup DPM database and restore in new server. Please see steps in following article:
Move the DPM server to a different computer

• Disk storage used by Mac Mail?

I was trying to figure out what was eating up my iMac's hard drive and came across the surprising fact that my IMAP accounts using Mac Mail as the client involve many GB of disk storage. [Mail is not the worst offender, but it is puzzling.]
Can anyone explain what the client storage is for? I thought in the IMAP world the messages reside on the server and I expected that only indices with subject lines would resid on my disk. Obviously this is not an accurate picture, at least for Mac Mail. [I have clients for 3 IMAP servers on my Android phone and there is no comparable storage used there.]
Is there a way to clean out my client disk storage without deleting the messages from the server?
Thanks for any help.

One of IMAP's advantages is it's synchronization features so you can work from multiple clients and not miss much, especially when not connected to a network. Turning this feature off requires you to have an internet connection to read and manage your email. It will therefore limit how much email you can search through with Spotlight, and also the options for backing it up and restoring it with Time Machine if you inadvertently delete an important message.

Run an App like Grand Perspective or Daisy Disk to visualize all your files, so that you can identify files not needed, or suitable for offloading to an external drive.

• External Storage recommended for use with FCPX

Hi everyone,
I want to improve FCPX performance and work with my events and projects on one or two external HDDs.
I am an amateur editor and mostly work with 720p, 120 fps, h.264 optimized to ProRes 422 footage on mostly single camera projects.
Can anyone recommend a portable product that will work for my purposes? Preferably one that I don't have to spend $1000+ on (like drobo or promise).
Is an external USB3 Drive powerful enough? Do I need thunderbolt?
Thanks so much for your answers and help!
Mike
P.s. Working with a MBP 15" Retina, 2,6 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 750GB SSD.

120fps? What camera did this media come from?
FW800 minimum, Thunderbolt is best. You're budget will determine your limits. Will USB 3.0 be enough? It all depends on what format you're editing. If you transcode everything to ProRes, just about anything will work. Firewire 800 will work, unless you're doing a lot of compositing and/or very long projects.
Get the format you can afford. Be sure spinning disk drives (your price range) are 7200rpm! Vital!
Minimum would be FW800, next up would be USB 3.0, next up would be Thunderbolt, as far as speed. Avoid SSD drives as you'll not get much storage space for the amount you sound like you have to spend.
