Disk storage showing full but sum of individual files shows much less used

My MacBook Pro recently gave 'start up disk full' messages. When I check with OminDiskSweeper it shows my HD as 148.3GB used 0.4GB free yet the drive sweep only shows 95.5GB used. When I do the same for my mobile me storage it shows 9.9GB used 0.1GB free yet the drive sweep shows only 38MB used. I am not sure what the 'missing' space is being occupied by and the performance of the macbook has now ground to a halt. Has anyone experienced similar issues and been able to resolve them?

Great thanks. Had 3 accounts established which had replicated stuff from iTunes but not visible to my normal account. Have deleted the other 2 redundant and largely duplicate accounts and got back my 50+GB!

Go to Settings - General - Usage and see which apps are taking up a lot of space.
In my experience, if you haven't cleaned out your Messages that is where a lot of space is consumed.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Storage is full but I can't remove anything from my iphone 5s

Hi there. I just upgraded to an iPhone 5s (16GB) from an iPhone 4 (16GB). While still using the iPhone 4 I enabled iCoud and iTunes Match and synced them across all my other devices (iPad and PCs). Now when using my iPhone 5s I constantly receive a message stating my storage is full (this didn't happen on my iPhone 4). When I sync my iPhone 5s to iTunes (version 12.0.1) it shows me that I have +7GB of music on my phone and +2GB of photos on my phone. However, because I have iCloud and iTunes Match enabled, I cannot locate any physical files on my phone in order to delete them. Has anyone else come across this issue, or have useful suggestions on how to fix the issue? Is there a trick to locating the files that may actually be physically on my device? Thanks for your help!

Sorry everyone, but with a bit more digging I was able to solve the issue. However, after locating the rouge music files, now iTunes shows I have +8GB of "other"! I think I've found some advice on getting rid of most of the "other" stuff. Sorry for the post...I should have done a bit more research before posting.

  • Storage appears full but is not...

    Hi all!
not sure if it's the right place, but my MacBookPro is showing storage memory of ca.500GB almost full. Checked fotos, movies, music, apps, etc. and they are under 50GB in total... what's going on?? (trash has been emptied)
pls help!! Really need that memory.. :S
    Thx! =)
PS: 499.25GB total storage, says 37.06GB free. The files I have occupy more or less 30GB!!! :S

OMG! it says 372GB for mail???? then it makes me go throug a REALLY long pathway inside the "recovered mail" folder untill I actually get to the original files... one of the folders has a suspicious name (only letters and numbers). Granted, I have a lot of e-mails saved.... but is it normal that they take up so much space???!!! could this be a virus or malware of some sort???
    thx! =)
There are no viruses for osx
Viruses: Are programs that earn their name by their ability to replicate themselves locally & often across a network.  Many attach themselves to to other programs.  When you launch one of these programs, the virus code launches as well & the virus goes about its nefarious business. Viruses are exceedingly rare on the Mac.  There are no know viruses for OSX.
Trojans: Promises one thing but delivers another.  You can download a program but when you run the program, the contents of your computer are instead beamed to an underground data center in Kamchatka.  If you obtain software from reliable sites, you are unlikely to get a Trojan horse.
Adware: Has an embedded advertising component - one that displays or downloads ads when you run the software.  Some adware is legitimate, part of the price of using a free program such as the Iconfactory's Twitterrific or Eudora for example.
Spyware: Grabs data from your computer & ofen uses it for the purposes of evil, sending personal info to a baddie or when you're using your web browser, redirecting you to site you don't want to visit.
Mac users have nothing to worry about regarding Spyware & Adware because in order for the worse forms to work, the OS must allow unrestricted access to its more sensitive parts.  The Mac OS doesn't.
    Free Software: ClamXav
    iAntiVirus

    Macintosh Viruses
    It doesn’t get PC viruses.

  • Computer says disk is almost full, but I have 14 GB free

    iBook G4 1.33
    OS 10.5.8
    1.5 GB of ram
    40 gig hard drive
I  get a message that says that the disk is almost full.  In disk utility, it states that 36 out of 37 gb of hard drive space has been used.  However when I open the finder window after clicking on the hard drive (the first level showing applications, library, system, users),  it only adds up to about 23 gb of space being used once I select calculate all sizes.  It doesn't show me the other 13 gigabites that would add up to 36.
I don't have the 10.5 CD's since I bought this off of ebay preloaded with the os.
I've already repaired drive holding the shift key upon startup.  I've ran cocktail pilot mode to run scripts, repair permissions, empty cache, etc...I turned on invisible items using cocktail to see if I can find the extra gigabites to no avail.
It is not connected to the USB external drive.
    File Vault is off.
    Any other suggestions.

Seems there's some hidden File/Folder on the drive.
Let's try another way, get Find Any File...
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
Set it up File Size is greater than 3gb, hold Option key when selecting Find to Find all.
    Then try EasyFind...
    http://www.devon-technologies.com/download/
Near the bottom of the page.
Search your whole drive for Files Only, Case Insensitive, Include Package contes, include hidden for something like just a dot/period . then sort on Size.

  • Encrypted Disk Image Seems Full But Is Not 10.5.6

I've created a 20 gig encrypted Read/Write disk image (not a sparse image) using Disk Utility. The image resides on an external hard drive. I back up a 900 mb file each day to the encrypted disk image. There are six such files on the encrypted disk image, but the folder shows only 526 MB of free space left. Does someone know why this is happening and how to avoid it? (It happens as well when I back up the same file to an encrypted disk on a flash drive. I delete and replace the file and this process seems to eat up space on the disk image.) Thanks.

when you delete a file you have to empty trash while the disk image is mounted. that should free up the space on the image. I would also recommend using sparse image instead of a regular one. it will take less space on the hard drive and you can make it bigger if you have to.

  • Ipad mini says storage is full but i have deleted everything and tried everything. Does anybody know what the issue is, i would be greatful for a response, thank you!

My ipad mini says that my stirage is full but i have dleted everything and its still the same, i cant download apps, or take photos and camera and photos seems to be taking up the most GB even though i have delted everything from my photos. Does anyone know what this is? thank you!

When you delete photo in 8.x it puts them in a deleted folder,  it lets them in there for 30 days.  You need to delete the photos / videos in the delete folder ( may have different name. )

  • TS1324 I have synced my Ipad and Iphone and my Icloud storage is full now, I want to unsync so I can use both of their Icloud storages separately, how can I do that?!!

I have synced my Ipad and Iphone and my Icloud storage is full now, I want to unsync them so I can use both of their Icloud storages separately, how can I do that?!!

Your iCloud storage is linked to your Apple ID, you can't unlink the devices unless you use separate Apple ID's for each device. That's not a good idea as you will have to pay for the same purchases twice on each device and you don't want to do that.
Backup with iTunes where the size of you backup is only limited by the a amount of available space that you have on your computer, buy more storage in iCloud, or .... and this makes no sense either but it is a possibility ... remove one of the devices from iCloud and backup one in iTunes. If you are going to backup with iTunes, backup both devices with iTunes and leave iCloud alone.
You don't need to backup with iCloud if you backup with iTunes and you can still download your past purchases without having to actually use iCloud for backups.

  • My start up disk is almost full, but I have deleted everything I can find - I think that when I upgraded my software it has saved the old one - anyone know how I can find and delete it?

    Hi All,
Late last year I upgraded from tiger to leopard (very out of date I know) but ever since I have been getting warnings that my startup disk is full.  I have deleted loads including pictures and itunes but still get the same mesage.  I think when I upgraded the old version was stored somewhere and this might be causing the problem.  Does anyone know where I would be able to find and delete - or alternatively have any other suggestions for what the problem may be?
    Many thanks

    WOW
80GB is a very small drive.
Sorry Noondaywitch, but omni disk sweeper isn't going to install in the space remaining, without more problems.
    My Suggestions
    1.  Get a large (400GB+) USB hard drive
    2.  Copy all the contents of your home directory to the USB drive.
    3.  Delete all your files from your home directory on your computer after making sure everything transferred ok.
    4.  Perform a clean (destructive) install of Mac OSX and then the applications you need.
    5.  Check how much space you have left.
    6.  If there is less than 50% of the HDD space left (35GB or so), then consider replacing the HDD with a new larger one.  If it's a white intel mac book, then this is very easy, and instructions how to do it are included in your 'everything else' wallet with your OSX DVDs etc.
    7.  If you can't replace the HDD, then it's time to consider a new machine i'm afraid.
    Hope this helps

  • Storage not full, but Creative Cloud says it is full

My desk top Creative Cloud says I used all my storage, 20 GB. But then I emptied the archive completely - and it shows. The CC file is empty too. Yet this app carries on pretending I have no storage left and so it doesn't allow me to store anything. What to do? I find no FAQ relating to this problem.

Now, all of a sudden, I see a file named 'Pictures', but wen I click on Delete permanently, there is always an error .

  • 'iCloud says storage is full'  - But it shouldn't be?

My iPhone will not back up because it say my iCloud is full.  I have looked at the breakdown of what is due to be backed up and it says  I have 4.9GB on the Camera Roll.  But I have transferred all the pictures and videos off my phone so it is completely empty.  So why is it trying to backup 4.9GB of pics that don't exist?
    Cheers,
    Carl.

What is the EXACT message you're getting?

  • Internal storage is "full" but it's not..

So for the past two or three months I've been getting notifications on my 16GB iPhone 5C saying "out of memory"/"out of storage", and within these few months I've deleted about 80% of my music, half of my pictures, more than half of my apps, and even all of my messages. And yet after all of that, my phone currently has a total free memory of 0 bytes. It is now to the point that I cannot take pictures nor can I send them (I get a little blank space saying 'Tap to Download' that does nothing when tapped), and I am unable to update any of my apps, or even my OS in general, which I why I am still using iOS 7.
I figured I was overlooking something and because my phone has an actual capacity of 13.23GB, I went through my usage app-by-app and added them all together, converting the Megabytes to Gigabytes and adding the 3.5GB from my music and messages, my phone's storage should be at roughly 4.087GB.. not a full 13.23GB.
Can anyone suggest anything to me? I'm thinking of just backing up my iPhone to my computer and resetting it, then just restoring it. Would that get rid of whatever's taking up all my space? What can I do?

Backing up and restoring the phone again should help to regain the free space again.
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups

  • My icloud storage is full but i can't see where all the data is.

I am using an iPhone 4S.  My iCloud (free) storage of 5GB is approaching full usage.  When I try to free up some space, the documents and data only amount to less than 20MB.  I can't see where the rest of the 4.88MB is used and is totally invisible to me.  Please help

    Hey Dragonfly1981,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Take a look at the article linked below, it provides a lot of great information that will help you find out what’s taking up the other 4.8 GB of data and choose what you want to be backed up.

  • MACBOOKPRO SAYS THAT MY STORAGE IS FULL, BUT I JUST GOT MY COMPUTER, AND I BARLEY HAVE ANYTHING ON IT.... WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!!!!!   HELP!!!!!!  NEED SPACE FOR SCHOOL... URGENT!!!!!!!

    HELP!!!!

I've seen at least five other people just today with this same issue... hmmm....
What I told all of them is to download Disk Inventory X or DaisyDisk and scan the whole disk to see what is taking up all the space. Don't delete anything though (you might be deleting important stuff).
Once you finish the scan, post the names of any big files here so we can diagnose the problem better. If you feel like it, take a screenshot of the window (push commant+shift+4, and then hit spacebar, then click the window). Post it here so I can take a look. That might be even more helpful. Failing that, just a list of a few big files would be nice. ...oh, and not swap files. They're always big and always need to be there.
