Disk suite question

Hi,
I'm a newbiee regarding disk suite, and I am trying to mirror a 36GB drive using this application. This drive was already loaded with data and partitioned in different ways. My question is this: can I still use disk suite to mirror this disk without loosing any of the data already loaded on the disk, or should I better set up a manual mirror.
Any comments and suggestions will be greatly welcomed.
Regards,
C.

Hi
The short answer is yes to the first part of your question. Not quite sure what you mean by setting up a manual mirror ( something to do with command line or GUI perhaps ? )
To be on the safe side, create a set of one way mirrors on the 36Gb disc partitions ie
metainit d30 -m d31
where d30 is your metadevice and d31 is a metamirror consisting of a partition of your disc containing the data.
Then on a new disc, create a second mirror and attach this to d30. This way you can be sure you
you don't wipe out your data with a mirror of a blank disc.
If in any doubt back everything up before you carry out disksuire operations.

  • Disk suite 4.2.1 Bug

    Ok
Looks like I found a bug in Disk Suite 4.2. I am not sure with the other versions. So here is my finding. If I have any meta device either mirrored or raid or stripe. While my metadevice is mounted I can create a soft partation on top of it. Once i am able to create soft partation i can create a new filesystem. The intreasting thing is Disksuite never warn you about the metadevice is already in use or mounted. So it means i can destroy any mounted filesyetm. This looks like a bug to me. I am wondering if any one reported it before or not.

I have a similiar problem.  The centre control button and the volume controls just stopped working. Can't answer calls or skip tracks when playing iPod.  The controls on the iPhone itself still work fine with the earbuds connected.  Seem to just happen overnight.  Bought a brand new set of Earbuds, suspecting it was the buds but exactly the same results.  Non repsonsive controls.  Very disappointing.
Unlike you, the mic built in to the phone does not seem live with the buds plugged in to the iPhone.
Have you found a solution ?  Any help would be appreciated.  My iPhone 4 is just 6 months old.

Your snippet doesn't show anything wrong, so I can't understand why you're asking about recovery. Are you talking about fixing something or are you thinking of some failure scenario that hasn't happened yet? You also don't show any output as to what we're looking at. I'm assuming from your subject that /var and /usr are mounted on d30 and d40, but you might want to confirm that.
Also the output suggests that you've started setting up mirrors, but haven't done so. All the data is on c1t0 and nothing has been copied to c1t1 yet.
There's no redundant data shown here. So any failure in c1t0 will be fatal and unrecoverable from a SVM standpoint. You'd need to add the second half of the mirrors.

  • Disk suite shows wrong  devices

I have built a number of meta devices using onlide disk suite all worked fine . Had to do a recovery of the operating system to restore root and var partitions from tape . In doing so had to rebuild path-to-inst.
there is now a mis match between the information held by the OS and that held in the meta databases . Iit all works fine but metastat displays the wrong disk names .
does anyone have any idea how I can update meta db without having to rebuild the entire disk suite config

I think you'll simply need to remove the metadb and recreate - see this article for a similar situation

  • Older disk utility question

I can't find my installation disks for 10.4. The most recent one I can find is 10.2
I ran verify disk on Onyx and it told me the disk needed repair and that I needed to run disk utility from the cd.
    1. is there any difference between the 10.2 disk utility and the newer 10.4 version that might corrupt the system?
    2. I ran multiple tests with Tech tool pro and passed everything. Is there something Disk Utility does that tech tool pro isn't doing?

Wow, you do your research in addition to answering everyone's questions! Apple should be paying you. I'll offer some personal comments, which I'm sure you're familiar with. I'm not a Mac specialist; but as one very experienced system programmer once said to me, 'All operating systems are basically the same'.
I discover things by using theory, then discover them wrong in an 'Ars Technica' article, because Mac changed something. The Wikipedia is essential for puzzling terms and even basics.
In addition to Apple's incomparable 'Help System', 'Apple Support', and 'Apple Boards', I can recommend independent forums (though I don't use them). CNET has a list:

    Printing
My preference has always been HP inkjet printers, if only for their level of support in CUPS for MacOSX and GNU/Linux. Using their inks & papers, I can spend my time on research rather than fiddling with ICC profiles. (I think I had four drivers, three CUPS PDD's and the standard one.) Rather than change my 'presets', I created a different virtual printer for duplex B&W, 4x6 glossy color, &c. Nice for OOUI users.
Debian GNU/Linux has an HP control panel for fine adjustments, ink levels, etc. There are better printers, I'm told; but HP is Mac & Linux friendly:

  • Repair Disk Permissions question...

I keep getting this after I repair disk permissions :
    "Permissions differ on "System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.usbmuxd.plist", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are -rwxr-xr-x .
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
    Permissions differ on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxr-x ."
Can someone please tell me what this means?...and especially the Warning: SUID...something modified and will not be repaired?...is this something I should be concerned about?...
Wasn't sure where to put this question...if it's in the wrong place please tell me and i'll post it elsewhere...
    Thanks for help in advance...

    Hello Todd Kopriva
Your video on Disk Drive Optimization is excellent. I went out to purchase (2) Raid-5 (8 TB) units. I had a question regarding Read Files going to one Disk and Output Files going to another. Can you give some examples of what type of Output Files you are talking about. Iam fairly new to Adobe CS5.5 Production Premium. I am presently usiung Premiere and Encore as well as After Effects. I just want to make sure as to what files will be going tomy Output Raid Drive.  I am thinking that one of them may the file created when you export out of Premiere wo Media Encoder.

  • Replacing T510 hard disk - 2 questions...

    Hello All,
I have a T510 with 320Gb hard disk. I want to replace the hard disk with something with more capacity. I have 2 questions:
Will this void my warranty - I have 500+ days left
Can I take a complete copy of the hard disk and have all my applications and settings work exactly as they did on the old disk?
    Thanks in advance,
    James
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Just as The Dude says.  I swap my drives weekely in my T510.  I use Acronis True Image and create Rescue Media on a Thumb drive.  I boot to it and clone my internal HDD to an external eSATA drive.  That takes 8+ minutes.  I then swap drives and clone from the external eSATA to the new internal drive.  When done, I remove the thumb drive and boot to the new drive - now exactly a duplicate of what is on the eSATA external.
This was, I have two complete backups of everything - and when I travel, I carry the "reserve" HDD in a small neoprene bag.
If you use the Ultrabay adapter, you can clone drive to drive internally.

  • Quadra 650 Flashing disk with question mark?

When i boot the Quadra 650 about 90% of the time it boots straight into a flashing image of a floppy disk with a question mark on it. Have tried putting the last used disk into the drive in case it didnt eject properly but that does not work.
The rest of the time it goes straight through to the OS no probz, is the hard disk about to fail?
Any ideas how i can fix this ancient beige box? Its running a middling version of System 7.
    Thanx

I suspect the hard drive is failing. If it's the original HD it's about 15 years old. Most HDs fail before that age. Have you heard any clicking or other strange noises?

  • CS6 and EDGE : the SUITE question

Alright, sorry I posted a quesiton this morning and found the answer, i have to have CS6 to use lateste Edge Animate.
What bugs me is that here it says (document created in May but updated lately it seems)
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/digitalpublishingsuite/articles/enhancing-your-dps-folios-with -edge-animations.html
    it also takes
"Adobe Digital Publishing Suite Professional or Enterprise account"
    Do you confirm ?
If taht is, it's really painful, we can't afford it fdor now...
We sold a project with previous version made under CS5.5 and Edge Preview (we could use Egde stuff by then) so we're a little bit trapped.
Do you confirm it takes a paying suite to be able to use EDGE ANIMATE in CS6 ?
If we pay for the CCM soon (we think about it) will we have to pay both then ? CCM and the PROFESSIONAL EDITION ?
    thanx for the answer

You are wanting to use both Edge Animate and Digital Publishing Suite (DPS) together?
I would ask about using both together in the DPS forum here http://forums.adobe.com/community/dps. They will also know if DPS:Single Edition (which is less expensive than the Professional or Enterprise versions) will work for you.
For a question specific to just Edge Animate the forum is here http://forums.adobe.com/community/edge_animate.

If you have CC you get Edge and you are free to use it any DPS work you do, including Single Edition.

  • RAID with Disk Utility question

I've setup a RAID array in disk utility for an external SATA NAS that I have. The Silicon Image Si3132 drivers are not working for Snow Leopard (the SATARAID 5 drivers) so I've installed the base non-raid drivers for 10.6.
I'm using Disk Utility to setup the RAID for now until I get updated drivers from SI. Here's my question:
Let's just say that my Mac Pro one day decides to die and I have to rebuild a new OS on the machine. I will then have this external drive where I've configured a software RAID with Mac OS X. Will I be able to rebuild this RAID and recover the data, or will I lose all of the data if the Mac needs to be rebuilt?
The external enclosure has its own controller, but these silicon image drivers do not seem to want to work as they are kernel panicking.
Will I be able to recover the RAID config with disk utility if I rebuild the machine? My thinking is NO

You have four internal hard drives; ability to boot from FW or USB, and I would include TimeMachine and clone (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper). Some WHS NAS servers also support TimeMachine and SuperDuper, but I would have local backups. Two minimum.
I would not rely on SI or RAID.
And all you need to boot from, and I'd have at least two, is a basic 30GB partition for Mac OS: a working copy of your system as is, a copy of last version installed also, AND, one "emergency" boot partition for disk maintenance and repairs.
Then use NAS as second line of backup for your data, disk images, etc.
