Disk Suite/ Solaris 8 Upgrade Problems
Hello,
I am trying to upgrade from Solaris Sparc 7 to 8 and I have Sun Disk Suite mirroring the boot device. When I try to upgrade the installation fails. Is there a way to upgrade from 7 to 8 without breaking the mirror and if not is there a utility that can remove the metadb info and rebuild them after the upgrade.
Thanks,
Bill Bradley

Solaris 10 upgrade - Major problems - PLEASE HELP
I have a v880 running Solaris 10 11/06 (U3) which I am trying to upgrade to the latest Solaris 8/11 (U10) release without much success. I am simply using the Solaris Installation Program and booting from DVD and running the upgrade option. However the process fails with the following error:
The selected Software exceeds the available disk space.
The Solaris operating environment selected to upgrade contains
a metadevice. Disk Space Re-allocation is not allowed.
Please do one of the following:
Deselect some software to be installed.
Choose another version of Solaris to upgrade. (If available)
Go back and select Initial Install.
Exit the installation.<Press ENTER to continue>
A df -h shows that / has 22Gb free, swap space is 3.1Gb free, /var has 7.1Gb free and /usr 3.1Gb free. All the documentation seems to show that that is ample space. I'm relatively new to Unix and Solaris so be gentle with me if I'm doing something stupid. Many thanks to all. An initial install is not an option as I need to keep the setup as is.It's probably /usr that it's whining about. It's not very exact when calculating space and 3.1G is not ample space these days. This is why I put everything in the / partition anymore. Don't have to worry about this crap down the line...
You might try copying some stuff off of /usr (if you can find it) and try again. -
Disk Utility and repair permissions problem after upgrade 10.5.1
*Problem with Disk Utility* - +repair permissions don't work anymore+
After upgrading to OS X 10.5.1 tried to correct permissions with Disk utility. But I'm not able to repair permissions, because I get this message every time "fault: The underlying task reported a fault at concluding." and permissions repair stops. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone have any idea how to get this working again? Will try installing OS X 10.5.1 again from the downkoad that you recommended. Won't be able to do this untill after the New Year but I'll let you know if this helped. I had another problem after he 10.5.1 upgrade and that was that the Security update 2007-009 also refused to install. Could this be related too the problems with Disk utility and the permissions problems.

Recovery plan for Solstice disk suite 4.2 on Solaris 8
need to know have more details regarding recovery of applications which are running on a server with Solstice disk suite.
I know we run metadb d option for replacing bad disks when there is disk failure and metareplace for Sub Mirrors out of sync and are in maintenance state.
I would appreciate if you have any detailed recovery plan as to how we can take care of applications such as Oracle ,when the system crashes Which is using Solstice disk suite .
Any websites or white papers on the same will be highly appreciated.what exactly is a scenario you are thinking about!?

Solaris 10 Upgrade no Graphical Environments
I just upgraded my little Ultra 10 (300Mhz, 256MB, 40GB disk) from Solaris 9 to Solaris 10. I basically selected "everything" and after hours of feeding CDs it finished and I just get the console login. I turned on the login server. Reboot. No CDE. I tried runing the session manager from the command line and it chunks away a little while and just comes back to the command line.
During the install it did some windows on the screen. Do I have to go back to Solaris 9 to get this thing doing graphical interfaces again?
Geez Linux is so much easier!Hello John,
I'm pretty sure that even with 256MB of the memory a graphical setup is available.
If cost is an issue, try to get 128MB modules (501-2654). These are higher profile and <u>not</u> certified for the Ultra 5/10. They even fit in the Ultra 5 after removing the floppy mounting bracket. These modules are inexpensive to get from second hand (e.g. eBay).
The modules are for mid-range and high-end servers (E3x00,E4x00,E5x00,E6x00 x=0 or 5, and E10K).
Maybe a reconfiguration boot (<b>boot -r</b>) resolves the issue.
Have you tried to reset the configuration with <b>sys-unconfig</b>. There are only a few settings you have to re-enter.

10.4.6 upgrade problem = Photoshop crash
Hello,
I upgrade Tiger on 3 PowerMac G5 from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6 without problem during upgrade install.
Now when the graphists works with Photoshop CS, it crash ("Le programme a quitté inopinément" => "Program has quit...") when they save documents opened from fileserver (Appletalk). Fortunately, the modifications of the document are saved.
The document is open from an Appletalk Sharing Directory (Linux Fileserver with netatalk 2.0.2).
We make several tests with different files, on different macs, in different situation (where the file is open, where it is saved).
If the document is open from the computer and saved to the fileserver or on the hard disk : no problem
If the document is open from the fileserver and saved to the fileserver or on the hard disk : photoshop crash.
The problem appear only with Photoshop CS (I test Illustrator and InDesign) with any type of file (PSD, TIFF, ...).
I think there is a problem with Mac OS 10.4.6 update. It is strange. Are you sure you have no problem at all, the problem seems to come when in Photoshop you open a file from the appletalk network and save it anywhere.
To upgrade, I downloaded the Mac OS X 10.4.6 combo (PowerPC) and install it on 4 Mac, I don't use Automatic Updater.
With the solution, I give in my last post, I manage to resolve the problem on one mac, on the second one, I had problem when I copy the system directory and now I can't connect to appletalk...
When I resolve the problem, I have :
In "About your Mac" > "More Info" > "Structure" > "Software" > "AppleShareClient" (and AppleShareClientCore) : version 1.4.4 in place of 1.5.1 (Mac OS X 10.4.6). -
Fdisk and format show different cylinders can't use whole disk for solaris?
Solaris 10 5/09 s10x_u7wos_08 X86
Format did not show enough cylinders, so we can't use whole raid5 (4x 146GB) volume.
How can we fix it? We need the full raid5 volume for our solaris.

Hi Smart71,
I know it sounds complicated, but it really isn't.
You need to select the option to manually edit the disk label
when you install solaris.
Your problem is that you have assigned 73 GB for your / (root)
and 63 GB for your swap. That's not the problem that I see. The problem is that the Solaris partition (and therefore the Solaris VTOC label inside) is only for 136GB. But the actual underlying storage is 409GB. So the entire partition and the VTOC have to be rewritten.
You only have 2 options. Either re-install Solaris, of re-partition the disk.
If you don't have a spare disk to copy root to and you want to use
the whole disk, with just one / root partition, you will need to shrink /swap
create another slice to copy root to temporarily, and then re-partition your disk. Agreed reinstalling is easiest. But moving slices around will not let you change the VTOC size.
eg:
boot from CD into single user mode.
partition the disk so that eg:
swap is 3 GB. eg: ( from cylinder 1 to cylinder 400 )
partition 3 is 7 GB ( from cylinder 401 to cylinder 1318 )
( if 7 GB is enough to hold all your / data )
write the disk label out
newfs partition 3
mount / on /a
mount partition 3 on /mnt
Copy everything from /a to /mnt eg:
rsync -vaxH /a /mnt
or
find /a -xdev -print | cpio -pdam /mnt
umount /a and /mnt
re partition the disk so that / takes all the free space. If that were your goal, you wouldn't have to move anything. Just repartition and use 'growfs' on the root filesystem directly (while booted from CD).
eg ( starting at cylinder 1319 to cylinder 17816 )
write disk label out
newfs part 0 for /
mount / on /a and part 3 on /mnt
copy everything back from /mnt to /a
Check /a to make sure everything is there.
umount /a and /mnt
re partition the disk to make /swap 10 GB
( starting at cylinder 1 to cylinder 1318 )
write disk label out.
And that's it.
The disk you are working on is 17816 cylinders in size.
yet down the bottom you say that :
Total disk size is 53502 cylinders
That tells me there are 4 disks in the raid 5 set, and that
you have probably been presented with 3 x 136 GB disks.
That means that you should have 2 x 136 GB disks free.
Use one of these to copy your /root to. and then
re-partition your first disk and copy data back.
Or partition another disk correctly, write a boot block to it
Copy your root data to it, and boot from it.The entire disk is presented to the machine (as seen in the fdisk output), but the Solaris partition is only using the smaller portion of it. You can't create a second Solaris partition and use it at the same time, either. Only one Solaris partition can be used at a time.

Adding mutiple disks to solaris 8
I have 3 unsed disks on my SUN and want to combine them into one mount point. Is it possible to select all 3 when I "format" them. Thanks in advance.
Yes, Solaris 8 has a tool called Solstice Disk Suite, this is a Volume Manager which can be used to configure arrays of disks in a software RAID setup: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/coll/260.2

Disk suite 4.2.1 Bug
Ok
Looks like I found a bug in Disk Suite 4.2. I am not sure with the other versions. So here is my finding. If I have any meta device either mirrored or raid or stripe. While my metadevice is mounted I can create a soft partation on top of it. Once i am able to create soft partation i can create a new filesystem. The intreasting thing is Disksuite never warn you about the metadevice is already in use or mounted. So it means i can destroy any mounted filesyetm. This looks like a bug to me. I am wondering if any one reported it before or not.
Ali ImranI have a similiar problem. The centre control button and the volume controls just stopped working. Can't answer calls or skip tracks when playing iPod. The controls on the iPhone itself still work fine with the earbuds connected. Seem to just happen overnight. Bought a brand new set of Earbuds, suspecting it was the buds but exactly the same results. Non repsonsive controls. Very disappointing.
Unlike you, the mic built in to the phone does not seem live with the buds plugged in to the iPhone.
Have you found a solution ? Any help would be appreciated. My iPhone 4 is just 6 months old. -
10.3.9 Upgrade Problems
Hello
Just did a routine upgrade about a week ago and since have nothing but problems. Figured out the ITunes fiasco but still more problems. Mail preference got lost, clients keep calling to tell me of errors and can't send to me, get "smpt recipient connection failure error". Worse yet, apps kept crashing and even though my files were saved, if they were open during the crash, they were ruined (one in Quark, one in Photoshop). Lost major work, lost $!!! Crashed occurred without me touching a thing, just looked at the screen! Things have stabilized some since repairing permissions, except email trouble. What to do about that? Clients say my mail is turning up as junk mail. Anyone else have any of this happen?Sue:
Welcome to Discussions.
I am not sure how easy or difficult it would be, but I would suggest a complete re-install if that is practicable. You could try the usual PRAM, Repairing Disk Permissions, cleaning out .plists running Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior to care for directory problems, but it is a lenthy and tedious job. If a re-install is not out of the question I suggest it. You could do an Archive and Install.
Here are some suggestions on installation:
Panther: Archive and Install
If you have the right disks here is what you do.
1. Warning: Although we will use Archive and Install there is always a risk something can go wrong. As a precaution back up your User Folder and any third party applications you can't afford to lose.
2. Check to see if you have the latest Firmware Update. Note: You must be in OS 9 to update firmware
3. Boot from the install disk holding down the C key.
4. Once booted go to the Installer Menu and open Disk Utility.
To do a clean install see Notes below
5. Run Repair Disk. If there are problems, run it until no problems are reported. If it reports that it can't repair the problems you might need TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior.
6. While still in Disk Utility run Repair Permissions.
7. Quit Disk Utility and open the Installer.
8. Choose the option to Archive and Install. This saves your data in a Previous Systems folder, which you can retrieve after installation.
9. You might want to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer Drivers to save Hard Drive space.
10. Proceed with installation.
11. After installation is complete computer will restart. Follow prompts and set up computer.
12. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and Repair Permissions.
13. Go online and download updates, or go to Software Update under the Apple Menu and update your OS.
14. Transfer your User Folder from Previous Systems folder.
NOTE (below):
To do a clean install:
Follow steps 1 through 4 above.
a. In Disk Utility select your HD in left panel and Erase in main panel.
b. Be sure Volume Format is Mac OS Extended and the checkbox Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed is checked.
c. Select Options at bottom left in Erase panel. WARNING! This procedure will erase the contents of your entire HDD. Be sure you back up anything you cannot afford to lose!
Select option to zero all data. Click OK. Click Erase.
This process will take a while, so this is a good time to take a long walk or call your mother
d. After HDD is erased resume at No. 7 above.
Post back with any questions or comments.
Good luck.

Disk suite shows wrong devices
I have built a number of meta devices using onlide disk suite all worked fine . Had to do a recovery of the operating system to restore root and var partitions from tape . In doing so had to rebuild path-to-inst.
there is now a mis match between the information held by the OS and that held in the meta databases . Iit all works fine but metastat displays the wrong disk names .
does anyone have any idea how I can update meta db without having to rebuild the entire disk suite configI think you'll simply need to remove the metadb and recreate - see this article for a similar situation

I've bought LR5 as an upgrade disk from Amazon. Previously I had LR3 installed on my MAC OSX 10.9.4. Installation from disc was reported ok. After inserting the serial number, the original LR3 serial number is found, but if I hit continue LR5 disappears without any further message. Next time I start LR5, it starts again with asking for the serial number ...
Thanks,
download of latest LR 5.5 worked!
