Disk Thrashing Brand New Macbook Pro

Hello.
I got my macbook pro 17 inch last Wednesday and everything seemed fine. Today I have noticed that while it is idle there is a distinct noise of something accessing the harddisk. This was not audible before as I checked after I got it and would have noticed it.
All I have done so far is a restore of my old macbook pro from time machine backup and everything seemed fine until now.
Is this a known problem? How do I find out what is accessing the harddisk?

+All I have done so far is a restore of my old macbook pro from time machine backup and everything seemed fine until now.+
Did you by any chance restore a complete backup from an OLDER MBP to a NEWER platform? I.e. a full time-machine type restore?
If you did that could be a source of your issues - it's not usually a good idea to restore to a previous platform. Drivers differences and all kind of things can cause you random problems.
I know for example that my hard drive taken straight from my 2009 MBP boots and appears to work in my 2010MBP - I did this just out of curiosity. It wouldn't have been wise to continue to use it however given the platform differences.

  • Why wont my brand new macbook pro boot to an external disk?

why wont my brand new macbook pro boot to an external disk?  I have the 10.7.4 on both.  The MBP came with it so I installed it onto the hard drive i have been using the same way with an older macbook pro but the new MBP does not see the startup disk.  So i installed the same version of the os onto the MBP by hooking it up to my imac as a target disk because it would not recognize the install usb stick.  Now the brand new MBP doesnt start up

I had the same issue.  The 2012 macbook pro has a different 10.7.4 build that is not yet available for public release.  It won't boot no matter how much you try.  You need to wait for Mountain Lion and create a start up disk from ML.  Apple most likely will release a 10.7.4 update for the 2012 models, but they are focused on ML now.

  • Startup disk almost full for brand new Macbook Pro with Mavericks

I recently purchased a brand new Macbook Pro Retina that runs on Mavericks.  I keep getting a message saying that my start up disk is almost full, even though I have almost no files on the hard drive other than whatever was pre-installed by Apple. Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?

OmniDisksweeper can help you find what's hogging your disk space, or help determinie if this is a bogus message.

  • How can I install logic pro 7.2 (made for power pc) on a brand new Macbook pro?

How can I install logic pro 7.2 (made for power pc) on a brand new Macbook pro with OSX 10.7.4?
This message appears: You can't open the aplication LogicPro.mpkg because power pc aplications are no longer compatible.
    Thanks folks

You should be able to copy all the files from your old computer, although it might not work if the old machine didn't have an intel processor. When I got a new Mac a few months ago, I used the migration assistant to copy everything from my old computer's time machine backup disk. All my old pro apps, such as Final Cut Pro 6, work fine on the new machine under Lion.
Later, I wanted to install Soundtrack pro and couldn't do it from the original disks. So I installed it on my old machine and copied the files. It worked perfectly.

  • Can I run OS 10.6.4 on my brand new MacBook Pro?

I am a professional photographer and one of the programs I need in order to do my job is some software from Nikon that apparently will not run on Lion, OS 10.7.3.  Documentation says that it can run on OS 10.6.4, Snow Leopard.
Can I run OS 10.6, Snow Leopard on my brand new MacBook Pro, 2.8Ghz, Intel Core i7 machine?

You cannot install any of them. As I said earlier your only options are 10.6.6 through 10.6.8 none of which are on a retail DVD.
If you have access to a Mac that runs 10.6.4, then you can put a small system on a 16 GB USB flash drive, boot from it then upgrade the system to 10.6.8. Now, see if you can boot your new computer with it. If so, then create a small partition on your new computer's hard drive large enough for the Snow Leopard system and whatever applications you need to use. Clone the USB flash drive to this partition using the Restore option of Disk Utility:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new partion on the internal drive. Source means the USB flash drive.

  • Brand new Macbook Pro Boot Camp boots to blinking cursor

I have a brand new Macbook pro running Mountain Lion and Boot Camp 5.0. I have made the disk needed for drivers and support and stuff. Installation looks like it was successful. It gets up through making an account and setting up windows update stuff (never gets to the desktop). After that it says preparing desktop followed by logging out followed by shutting down. It then restarts over and over again to a black screen with a blinking cursor. Anyone have any ideas? I have seen stuff about booting to the win7 disk and selecting repair and then command line to repair the boot efi stuff but since it never has a successful boot it never has a build to repair to. I am frustrated after 7 different installs of windows and a lot of time wasted.

I should add that I went as far as downloading a trial of parallels and imported by boot camp partition. It booted fine but when I tried to install the drivers and support files I got a message that said this version of boot camp is not meant for this hardware. I was thinking if it was hanging on something I could boot into it using parallels and fix it. No dice.

  • Brand new macbook pro keeper keeps freezing

    Hello,
I got a brand new macbook pro less than a week ago and already it is acting up. It keeps making these clicking sounds that seem to originate from the top right corner of the keyboard (where the power button is). Also, I'm constantly getting the spinning rainbow wheel, even though the only applications I have open are pages and safari. When the spinning wheel starts, I can't even access force quit. I tried rebooting my computer but things are still freezing (even now I'm getting the wheel every couple of words that I type). This is all very frustrating. I feel like this shouldn't be happening, especially based on how much I paid for this computer. I also tried running the 'verify disk permissions' in disk utility and it came up with a bunch of problems (I don't know if that's normal or not)
    Help?

Make an appointment online at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store and take it in. They should be able to get you going.

  • My brand new Macbook Pro makes an odd repetitive sound.

I recently bought a brand new macbook pro as I just returned my Macbook 2.4ghz only 2 weeks after using it as apple upgraded their whole line of laptops just after my purchase. The Macbook made no sounds when it turned on maybe a 2 second flicker noise when being woken up but thats it. My new MBP makes this repetitive sound 3 times over like it's taking in a disk when it's not, I haven't even installed a disk yet. Is there anyway I can fix this or will I have to take it to the genius bar?
    Thanks
    Garrett

I would disagree... Chances are that if it's bad enough to annoy you like you say then it is more than likely a problem and you should (again) take it back and show the person at the Apple store. I have a late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro that I bought two months ago and the DVD drive stopped working properly as well (among other things).

  • Brand new Macbook pro 15inch (not Retina) wont boot my MBP 13 inch (2011) HD

Just bought a brand new macbook pro 15 inch, replaced the hdd with my 13 inch hdd and it wont boot. i got a Error msg. (Lion)
    - I put the new hdd in the old MBP(13 inch) and it boots fine.
    - I put back the old hdd in the MBP(13 inch) and it boots fine.
I figured the hdd wasnt compatable with the 15inch so then i cloned the 13inch hdd onto the 15inch hoping it would work. i still got the error msg.
so now im stuck because the 15inch wont boot from the stock hdd because it has the data from the 13inch. Very frustrating, what could be the logical reason to why it wont boot?

That's correct. The version of Lion you have on your old disk will not boot on the new machine.
What you should have done is make a Time Machine backup of your old drive. You still may be able to buy an enclosure for it and see if you can use Migration Assistant to migrate your apps and data, but I'm not sure that will work (works when an old drive is in another Mac and you transfer via, for instance, Firewire).
So you'll just have to resinatll the correct version of Mountain Lion and then you can TRY to use Migration Asistant to get your data/apps from your old hard drive once it's in an enclosure (again, I'm not sure that it will actually WORK, I've never tried it).

  • Brand New MacBook Pro keeps freezing

I have had my brand new MacBook Pro for about four months now and out of the blue, it will freeze up for about a minute or so randomly with no warning. I have run Disk Utility already along with restarting it, but it still freezes. Any ideas on to what is causing it?
    Thanks!
    Dave

Impossible to say without any information. You may want to keep Activity Monitor open (Applications-Utilities-Activity Monitor) and see if there is anything that uses a lot of % CPU and/or RAM. Check to see how much free RAM you have, if it's below 500MB that could be a problem, it simply means you are using all the available RAM.
Your machine is covered by the warranty too, so you may want to visit your local Apple Store and have a Genius look it over.
BTW when posting a problem, please let us know exactly what you are doing when the problem occurs, including what apps, version numbers etc. and specifics about your computer. Something like, "Yesterday afternoon and this morning while using Excel (Office 2011) on my 2010 15" MBP with 4GB RAM and 500GB HD my system......" That way we have the who, what and when.

  • Strange wifi problem on a brand-new MacBook Pro

Hey there, I'm new here. Desperation has got the better of me, and I hope I can get some advice.
So, last sunday I bought a brand new 13" MacBookPro with 2.8g i7 processor and 10.7.2 OS (I can't update to 10.7.4 because System Update tells me the download has been tampered with or corrupted after I waited 2 hours for it to finish, but I'm trying a direct download from the website). Here's the exact product: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MacBook-MD314LL-13-3-Inch-VERSION/dp/B005CWIZ4O/ref= sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1340301247&sr=8-5&keywords=macbook+pro+13
Everything is all perfect except for a strange wifi problem. Note that the wifi does not turn-on or off, it doesn't disconnect after 'sleep', it doesn't get less speed, it doesn't constantly leave a preferred connection (once I chose my home wifi it always connects to it no problem). The wifi bar is always full. What is wrong is that the internet is kinda 'glitchy'. The best metaphor I can think of is that it's like a car that has to be pushed down the road before the engine can start. Please, bear with me because this is kinda hard to explain and I'm not good at tech lingos.
One of the symptoms is browsing can get really slow and inconsistent, almost as if the wifi gets turned off in the middle of browsing. For example: if I look something up on Google and then open 5 new tabs, probably only 2 or 3 of those tabs will eventually load while the other two will not get past the long 'http:.......google.....etc etc' address and will eventually show one of those 'error loading page because there's no Internet connection' notice. This happens a lot. Sometimes I have to refresh/retry loading a page a couple of times before it finally loads, then usually everything will get back to normal and I will be able to open multiple tabs with no problem, but in a couple of minutes I would try to open another site and the problem will start again.
So I tried to see how it does with downloading using iGetter. Fortunately I also have a Macbook (white-plastic casing one) and my brother has an old 2006 MacbookPro so I can compare. With those two older Apples iGetter starts receiving data in less than 8 seconds after I click Start, while my brand-new Macbook Pro can take up to 15-20 seconds, sometimes it doesn't even start at all and I have to re-click the start button. But once the download actually starts (on my new MacBook Pro), it downloads like normal, it doesn't stop and the speed is also as good as I can get. Strange huh? Hence, like a car that has to be pushed before the engine starts.
I also tried 'speed testing' from a website with all 3 laptops. On my old MacBook and my brother's MacBook pro, once I click 'begin test' it takes only a couple of seconds of 'ping' before the download/upload speed measurements start, but with my new MacBook Pro (just like with iGetter) it takes up to almost a minute before the measurements start, sometimes it won't start at all and I have to re-start the test.
Well, thanks for reading. And hope you can help me shed some light into this. Because it is really preventing me from really enjoying my new MacBook Pro. And if this is most likely a hardware problem, I'd better get back to the store and try to get it replace or something while it's only been 5 days. *cheers*

Hey guys.. Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, I bought the MacBook in Indonesia where there are no such thing as an AppleCare. The only option is to leave the Apple product to one of the 'Authorized Apple care centre' and have whoever do whatever to it without guarantee of success. As for returning it and getting a brand new one, I also don't know if there is such a deal here, but that's actually a good idea, will try to go to the store tomorrow. Although, I'm worried that the problem might be with OSX Lion or something and getting a new one won't help.
mark75090, I've tried resetting the router when I first noticed te problem, didn't work though. I've checked my new MacBook's wi-fi (option+click wifi bar) and it says 'PHY Mode: 802.11g', so does my MacBook and the old MacBook Pro. I don't know what those mean though, and I don't know whether or not my router is an N., can you tell me more please.. I have tried with the other two turned off, and only the new MacBook using the wi-fi but the problem persists. I have also tried connecting directly to the router, but as I described, the problem is too subtle for me to notice the difference.
Also, if I create a brand new Wi-Fi connection in network preferences and connect to my router through the new Wi-Fi profile, the problem seems to be gone for an hour or so, then it always comes back though. I have also just finally installed 10.7.4, but it doesn't help either.

I have a white vertical line down the right side of my internal brand new macbook pro 13" display. I've done the following:
-Shutdown the computer, and restarted in Safe Mode by pressing the Shift key after the restart tone
-Shutdown the computer, and restarted by pressing Command, Option, P & R after the restart tone
-Checked display resolution, Best for Retina
-Hooked it up to a Dell external monitor and via projection to screen. There are no lines on the external or secondary screens
-Just curious, I ran a color utility which can not repair 4 items, maybe this is another issue.
This is a brand new Macbook Pro, just out of the box. It was fine for two days without any issues, fine last night while in use, opened it up this morning with the line.
Anyone now how I can fix this on my own?

If you are within the first 14 days from the date of purchase, return the MBP for a refund or an exchange.  If you are after the first 14 days of the date of purchase, have the MBP repaired under the warranty provisions.
    Ciao.

  • I bought a brand new MacBook Pro Mid 2014, and my battery cycle count is on 2!!

As I said on the question, a brand new MacBook Pro I bought recently which I haven't even put on charge yet already has a cycle count of 2!
I'm just curious if this is normal and I want to make sure that I received a brand "new" one not a refurbished one.
Did anyone else order a new laptop and have cycle charge of 2 or more and is this normal or not?

The factory charges the battery, one cycle, they may then test that particular MacBook Pro as part of the production testing and it ends up with another cycle.  Two cycles is not something to worry about.  If you bought the unit from an Apple store or directly from Apple, it will not be a refurbished MBPr unless they specifically said it was.  They don't do things like that.

  • I have a brand new MacBook Pro . I am trying to connect to the private wifi at my house but I need the IP address of my laptop . Everywhere I go on the laptop, the IP address is blank . How do I find the IP address if laptop is not connected to the wifi

I have a brand new MacBook Pro and I'm trying to connect to the private wifi at my house however, I need the IP address. Everywhere I go to find it, the adress is blank. What do I do ?

Your Mac won't have an IP address, at least not a valid IP, until you actually connect it to your home LAN. Not sure why you think you need the IP, you don't.
To connect to your home WiFi you need to know the SSID name, IE the name of your home WiFi, and the password for it. Once you have those two things click the little antenna looking icon on the right side of the menu bar and select your home WiFi name and click connect. A dialog box will pop up asking for the password, type in the password and click OK/Connect/Whatever.
