Disk too slow error when using M-Audio Oxygen 49 keyboard
I bought the M-Audio Oxygen 49 keyboard. And when I plug it into my MacBook Pro to do some playing, the project will record for maybe a minute but then I get a 'disk too slow' error and the recording stops. This happens every single time, no matter if there's 30 tracks or 1 track on the recording. I know that it is the keyboard causing the error because I am currently working on a 59 track piece that has effects on almost every track and my setup doesn't even blink. (well it'll pinwheel for a second when I hit record sometimes, but the CPU and disk meters don't ever get near red-line levels).
What on earth is causing this stupid keyboard to cause this problem, and how do I fix it? It's clearly the keyboard. When I unplug it and record a live track on a project that just gave me the 'disk too slow' error, everything works just fine!
Grr...
Any help is appreciated, thanks!
Edit: I have the MBP plugged via firewire into an Echo Audiofire and then into a WD hard dtive (at 7200 RPM). The keyboard is USB into the MBP.

hi
i spoke with Apple pro application support staff who confirmed that the Tascam 1884 patch for 10.4.10 is the cause of the problem. The apple boot drive can reliably record 1 channel of audio under normal circumstances. Apple staff described the situation as "unfortunate" and recommended to wait for Tascam to release 10.4.10 compatible drivers.
For anyone interested in the technical background, the Tascam 10.4.10 patch DOWNGRADES the audioFW component (messing with kernel headers etc.). This compromises the OS's ability to correctly communicate with FW devices.
I had tried recording to a firewire 800 drive, but all FW IO is affected by the 10.4.10 Tascam patch: Logic simply didn't record anything to disk when I tried this, and the machine became unresponseive. I do not recommend anyone attempt recording to a FW drive with the Tascam drivers installed.
I have recorded circa 400 hours of single channel 96K 24bit audio to my internal Macbook Pro boot drive using the same software/configuration under 10.4.9 without a single glitch. I do recognise that when requiring heavy disk IO it is not advisable to record to the boot drive. However, 1 channel of audio can be reliably recorded if the system is well maintained.
Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions.

No Reason For Disk Too Slow Error, any ideas?
Ok,
So I've used Garageband for years from iLife 06 and up and I've never had an issue with any Garageband until now. Here's the deal, I still get the disk too slow error, and there is no explanation. Below is my computer config:
COMP I'M USING:
Macbook Pro 13 inch
OS X Mavericks
Intel Core 2 Duo (1st unibody)
4 GB of RAM MAX
BRAND NEW Hybrid 7200 RPM Drive Installed 500GB total, 300 GB FREE
NO Other programs are open.
I use Garageband for recording songs but mostly now for recording podcasts. So the track I am using is normally 1 hour in duration. I can't seem to skip around, from minute 1 to minute 54 and edit at my whim without beach ball and timeing out getting the disk to slow error I never had this issue before, I either get the disk to slow error when trying to navigate large gaps of time in the podcast as I said earlier or even during RECORDING a podcast it'll simply say disk to slow, stop recording and occassionally say there are too many tracks in use, when I only record using 1 track of audio.
How can this be possible? Even my old G4 allowed me to jump all over the timeline with no issues. It seems there is some kind of flaw in the software. And yes, I just restored OSX Mavericks to my brand new Hybrid Hard drive, so there's no explanation as there are no disk errors or permissions errors of any kind.
I'd rather not hookup an external drive to record too as that seems silly when I've never had too before. If this "modern" computer can't do something that my old G4 ibook can do, don't you think we're going in the wrong direction with this program?
I've heard of so many people having this issue, and I thought upgrading my OS and getting a new HD would help but it hasn't. I'm at wits end with this issue.
Any advice would be helpful, thank you. There are a few other reports of problems with 10.6.7
Some audio device(s) inputs have ceased working, a few disk to slow messages...etc. I don't see the wisdom of upgrading a working DAW system if that's it main function. OSX has to support a lot of different hardware now, many, many Intel motherboard and/or processor revisions... it's not going to be as smooth sailing as it used to be.

Logic Freezes During Playback w/ Disk Too Slow Error
I'm trying to mix a song in Logic 9.1.7, but it has gotten to the point where Logic immediately freezes as soon as I hit the playback button in order to actually listen to my project. Before this I was occasionally getting the Sudden Motion Sensor/ Disk Too Slow error. I have increased the buffer size to 1024 and set the buffer range to large. I haven even disabled the sudden motion sensor, just incase this was the problem. I am currently using a Macbook Pro which is not connected to the interface, so this shouldn't be a problem. However, I use a Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 interface. The only third party plug-in that I am currently running on the project is the Focusrite Plug-in Suite - which I think might be the issue, considering that my other laptop is runing the same plug-in and having the exact same error. I already tried downloading every relevant software patch and update from the Focusrite website, all to no avail. I have been running Logic along with this plug-in, for over 2 years now and have never once had this problem. I haven't had any problem running Pro Tools, so obviously this problem is specific to Logic. This is incredibly frustrating, and I need this resolved soon. I have a deadline that I must meet by the end of the week.
Update: I just tried running Logic in 64-bit mode. It played for maybe a second and then gave me an error indicating that the plug-in suite was indeed keeping it from running properly. Guess I was right. It will play properly now, but contantly pops up with errors, not to mention that the HD and CPU meters are both constantly riding the red. I will put the most recent 64-bit error report log before the first one I got. I recieved the first one while still running 32-bit.
Here is the 64-bit one:

'disk too slow' problems when trying to record ONE TRACK on my ibook.
okay- help guys. my new ibook freezes after not even a minute of one track live recording and i ge the disk too slow error. i'm using a basic m-audio usb interface with the internal (4200 rpm) hard drive. i know this isn't a fast hard drive, but SURELY. one track? i've been in touch with m audio, reinstalled driver, repaired hard disk permissions. still no good. i only ever need to record two live tracks at a time, but then i do need to stack them up a bit. is my ibook really incapable of that? i'm shocked if it is. anyone want to buy an ibook?
any advice much appreciated as i'm going out of my mind.
happy christmas,
adam gilhespyAdam:
You haven't given a lot of info, but here are a couple of ideas:
1) What sample rate are you using? You should be at 44.1 or 48 kHz. Don't even think of anything higher.
2) Are you recording in a new arrange window? Or are you overdubbing to existing tracks? If so, freeze all your existing tracks.
3) Are you attempting to use any plugins while you're recording? If you are, turn them off for now.
4) How much RAM do you have installed? You need at least 768 MB; more preferably.
5) You're going to need an external drive eventually, but to record one track should be easily done. -
Weird HD meter jumping... "Disk Too Slow" error... ?
I'm just trying to record 2 tracks of live audio, but the HD meter in the Transport Bar keeps "jumping" every few seconds or so. And I had it quit last night due to a "Disk too slow" error.
I have a fairly beefy computer, and a lot of room on my HD. However, today I moved my entire Logic folder to a 1TB internal drive where it's the ONLY files on that drive (to try and increase the scratch disk space). But I'm still getting that weird meter behavior.
I've tried changing the I/O buffer size, but that doesn't seem to help either.
I've worked on projects where I've had dozens of tracks running at the same time, while recording, and while running several plugins.
I recently re-installed my system (don't ask), so I'm wondering if there's just some simple setting that's different. Or I need to tweak.
Thanks in advance!
eHi Ed
I was just about to post pretty much the same problem
I'm trying to work on a project & i have only 14 tracks 7 of which are audio tracks 6 with loops on there & one audio with a filter on there for bussing tracks too
I've hardly got any plugins going yet i am just putting the basics together
My problem is intermittent but very very annoying when i'm trying to get on with it
When it happens the top CPU meter goes right over into the red the other hardly registers
I Am also running the 64 bit i have tried it on the 32 bit but getting same problem
Need to struggle on as this is for an interview tomorrow
Thanks -
I'm getting the 10010 disk too slow error in Garageband--Macbook running 10.9.1
Hi--I know this error has been posted about a zillion times already, but I haven't seen it in relation to Mavericks yet, and I was wondering if anyone had any current info or fixes.
I'm trying to record audio in Garageband 10.0.1 on my 2009 Macbook (4GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) running Mavericks 10.9.1. I'm getting the "Disk too slow" error -10010 after recording for maybe a minute. I honestly don't think it's my machine. I've seen so many older posts about possible fixes that it looks like it's something to do with the OS.
Apple provided a possible fix in 2009 for Leopard and Snow Leopard but I haven't seen any similar fixes more recently. Thanks for any insights!i having the same problem too.. this had impacted my whole working environment after upgraded into OSX. Typing also choppy, video playback also choppy.. i don't see anything good on this OSX so far on my MBP mid 2012. sad sad sad

Logic Pro 8 - same old 'system overload' and 'disk too slow' errors
I am having serious issues with Logic Pro 8 on my macbook pro. I am running it with a Focusrite Saffire LE firewire interface.
I am only using it to playback two stereo files, as a backing track and a click for live performance. I can seem to leave it running all day at home without a problem but when I try and use it in rehearsal it trips up either straight away or half way through a track. It gives either 'disk too slow', 'system overload' or 'unable to sync audio and midi' error messages. This is obviously rendering it unusable. I have tried all the usual tweaks associated with this problem but to no avail.
I am reluctant to believe it is a hardware issue because I have Cubase 5 on the same laptop and that runs like a dream all night without the slightest hiccup. Obviously I have been using that instead.
Having done many internet searches about this it does appear to be a common problem but with no definitive fix.
Did anyone else getting these issues ever fix it?Jazzmaniac wrote:
That has nothing to do with logic. If your had disk becomes slow in rehearsals then it's very likely the hard disk acceleration sensor kicking in to protect your drive from damage. Strong vibrations will cause the heads to park, significantly reducing the the seek times and the transfer rates. Jazz
How does that explain the OP's statement:
"I am reluctant to believe it is a hardware issue because I have Cubase 5 on the same laptop and that runs like a dream all night without the slightest hiccup. Obviously I have been using that instead."
I think it has more to do with Logic's disk access and buffering system.
It's true that vibrations can cause data mis-reads as the drive head has to re-read the data, however part of the problem lies with Logic's buffering. I don't think the sudden motion sensor (sms) is kicking in, just that the drive may be having to re-read data and Logic's buffering system can't handle the slight interrupts.
I've dealt with the exact same situation locally (for a client), we ended up using an old bass drum case to make a padded rest for the MBP, that eliminated 90% of the problem.

Focusrite Octopre causing "Disk too slow" Error
Well, I am having perhaps the most frustrating and inexplicable recording issue that I have ever encountered.
To start off, I am using Logic Pro 9 with a RME Fireface UFX and a Focusrite Octopre MkII - for additional inputs when tracking drums. I am using some third-party plug-ins, but they don't seem to my causing my issue (as I will get to shortly).
Essentially, whenever I am trying to track drums, a "Disk too slow/ or peaked HD" error pops up - usually less than a minute into recording. This interrupts the session and makes it impossible to make any progress when recording. It is incredibly frustrating for obvious reasons. I even set the input buffer to Large, and all the fun stuff - didn't help. I began to notice that I only encountered this error when tracking drums.
So I managed to narrow everything down and discovered that the Octopre was actually creating the issue. When I turn off the Octopre, the problem disappears. Obviously though, this is still troubling, as I need the additional inputs from the Octopre in order to track drums. I need help resolving this issue as soon as possible, because It's keeping me up from finishing a handful of songs. Clealry it is an issue that is beyond my expertise, so help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!Do you have the digital clocks synced, or rather, how do you have the digital clocks synced?
You should have only a Single ADAT lightpipe cable running from the OctoPre OUT to ADAT IN, the Focusrite will be the Master Clock Sync, the RME will be set to slave sync to the ADAT Input.
It has to be in this order, if you're not using a separate wordclock generator that runs digital sync to both units via BNC connector/cable.
I don't know that this is your problem but it's best to start with basics first.
Set the Focusrite to sample rate 44.1 for testing, the RME should follow (at 44.1) if it's set to slave sync.
You're going to record at 44.1kHz / 24-bit. -
G4 PB 17" with external fw800 "disk too slow" error?
Was doing some onsite overdubs with piano on my powerbook the other day and,
Occasionally (just ocassionally) was getting the too slow error. Despite almost "no" activity in the disk performance bar of logic, and max 50% on the CPU.
The songs have maximum of 20-25 tracks on playback (although many more pre-created audio tracks without any material recorded on them).
Using the fireface 800 interface daisy chained with a fw800 ext. hard drive. (which is the correct way round for daisy chaining?)
upping the buffer size to 512 instead of 256 seemed to help.
But obviously presents me with even more latency issues from the recording. The fireface with my G5 is capable of less than a few ms of latency with masses of tracks.
I thought fw800 would be the solution to all my mobile problems. I'm surprised that I have to work with such a huge buffer.
One colleague told me about having a project with 96 audio tracks on a G4 PB with FW800 ext.
So, What level of performance can I really expect here?
Is daisy chaining inherntly poor...should I invest in a fw800 pcm card...or a SATA pcm card?.
Thanks for any advice.
(am trying to find questions here to answer for others...to repay the great help I always seem to get here.)
g5 dual2.3 /Powerbook 17" g4 Mac OS X (10.4.5) Logic pro7, fireface 800PDC "all" for recording is a surprise. Although I have frozen all the tracks before working with G4, not sure if this is relevant. I've certainly been hoping not to have to use bounced stereo mixes (Although with DfhS I have to).
I am recording at 24bit 96khz which is asking alot of the poor beast.
I will check the journaling (sounds very likely although the crash risk issue makes me a little nervous!) thanks cigame2.
Thanks Budhalite, I use local monitoring on the FF for sure, its a great feature, but the latency issues I got on this occasion were shown in the recordings afterwards. The performer didn't have any problems tracking, but the recorded tracks are markedly delayed compared to the backing tracks. I'm guessing wildly that PDC might help this...
Some latency is to be expected with DAWs I know. But this was a bit more than I thought. With a loose Jazz style this amount of latency can be a pain in the nether regions to correct.
How many tracks can I expect at this quality, and with what delays?
All the best -
Upgrade to GB11 to get rid of that disk too slow error?
I record 4 mics (voice only) into a m-audio fast track ultra, via USB, into the below macbook on Garage Band '09
Or at least, I would, except at 5 minutes in, I get "disk too slow" and it stops recording (although it appears to continue).
Does GB11 resolve this issue? If not...can I at all?
Thanks,
Dan

the best suggestion would be to get an external FireWire hard drive on which tio record, instead of the laptop's slow internal drive -
Core Audio disk too slow error?
I've read most of the reports from previous versions -relating to ibook disk speed and how an external fire wire drive is the way to go, so I got one, how do i set up Garage band to record to it, i can see it on the dt, but I'm still getting the same error while recording one live basic instrument track, no effects, off a 16 track mixer (tape out signal) (live band performance)
how do i set up Garage band to record to [the external hard drive]
You create your project on it, or copy your project to it and open that copy. -
OK, this is killing me. My MBP cannot record to an external USB 2.0 drive without failing. I'm using a fireface and the buffer is set for 1024. I record successfully for a few minutes, then I'm BLASTED with white noise, or some very complex distortion. Ouch!
I'm trying to record a single audio track while simultaneously playing back a GM Midi file. Granted, playing GM in Logic means using EXS instruments which can stream quite a bit of data, but this computer should "technically" be able to handle this.
Additionally, the BLAST of noise is dangerous to say the least. The first time it hit I had an immediate urge to get violent. Luckily for my ARP 2600, I contained my rage. Lowering the headphone volume kept the rage at bay.
Anyway, Logic 8 is working great on a Mac Pro for me, but I'm having serious recording woes on the laptop. The MBP is a C2D 2.33 2GB ram 5400 int, 7200 ext usb.
I have 2 issues here.
1. Can't record
2. 10004 error will BLAST noise.
#1 is annoying, but I'll probably find a workaround by using different hardware(drive, soundcard, etc). #2 is dangerous. If this happened to a client I was tracking, I'd want to kill myself if they didn't already do it.hi
i spoke with Apple pro application support staff who confirmed that the Tascam 1884 patch for 10.4.10 is the cause of the problem.
I understand this is usually an issue of not hardware speed, but in his case I do not believe that is the issue. I have a project that at one second was running fine with no issues, and the next I can't get it to play 50% of the time even with all but a couple tracks muted. When I opened up another project that should theoretically be much more cpu intensive, running tons of busses and reverbs, etc., the project ran fine. The one that keep causing disk issues only has a couple tracks playing at a time with NO reverbs, no bus routings, nothing.
So how do I go about debugging this annoying issue? Do I really need to just copy/paste all the audio and data to a new project with similar but new tracks? Autosave does not help because apparently logic got rid of my many earlier saves and i only have one option to revert to, which does not fix the issue.
Any help would be appreciated. Again, I am 99% sure this is not a cpu/hd issue.Hate to answer my own question so quickly, but at least the answer still doens't make sense to me. After dinking with this for a couple hours I disabled every single plugin I had and then saved it, and after that save it seems to have fixed whatever corruption was present. Now when I reenable the plugins it does not freeze. Dumb program....

Hey everybody,
Logic Pro X user here, have a late 2011 Macbook Pro, upgraded to 16gb of ram, 2.8ghz intel core i7, running latest version of Mavericks and more recently on a separate partition I tried Yosemite with a clean install of only Logic Pro X.
I use Apogee Quartet as my audio interface, I have a OWC Mercury Elite Firewire 800 external drive that I record to, all LPX files are on my internal drive.
Before Mavericks I had 0 issues with this setup, no with just one sole drummer track, or one single audio or software track, I get the various disk too slow errors after a few seconds.
I have tried reinstalling LPX, I tried a clean partition with nothing but Logic Pro on it (both Mavericks and Yosemite).
I have reset my PRAM and used Apple Hardware diagnostics as well as memtest (i think it was called) and even reverted back to my old original RAM that came with the computer. All hardware tests passed, I have verified and repaired disks from disk utility as well as from the recovery partition.
I have worked with Apple a bit over the phone doing these things, I have also read just about every thread on this pervasive issue. And its ruining my experience as a user. I absolutely loved Logic on Mountain Lion, no issues whatsoever! I'm considering reverting back to it actually.
On a side note I also have a HDMI Tv connected through the thunderbolt display, and a self powered USB hub that I connect my wireless mouse, iPhone cable and WD MY passport drive (which I only use for Time Machine).
I'm basically at my wits end and open to anybodies suggestions, I even tried resting the SMC and several other things advised in these forums.
I'm Stil under Apple Care and wondering if going into them is my only hope left.
I find that garageband acts the same, but I have no other system issues! its so bizarre, performance on all other programs is totally fine, its only when I want to record that I get issues.
For the record I do have some 3rd party VTS (Arturia V collection, EZ drummer 2 and AMplitube) but when I did the clean partition they weren't there and I still had the disk to slow error, so I'm not convinced its because of those.
Also Since the partition I obviously have played with my storage but I still have 75 gas of space on the mavericks partition (out of 500gb ) and on Yosemite partition I have 125 gbs available and on my Firewire external drive I have about 150gb left on a 500gb drive, so I'm not convinced its a space issue either (especially since before Mavericks Mountain Lion seemed to work just fine.)
HELP! Please help...I'm so exhausted trying to fix this on my own, and admittedly I've run to the end of my own capacity and don't know where to go from here.
Thank you for any suggestions, sorry for the long post, and if I have left anything out please let me know, this is my first post. And yes I did upgrade my apogee drivers to the recent ones they just released.

I use iMac Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB, Bus Speed 667 MHz, Processor Speed 2.16 GHz
Today I missed my deadline to 500 radio stations because all day long I saw "Disc Too Slow 10010"
I only used two tracks for a 20 min bulletin. I removed all compression and limiters. I bounced to an Ext HD but no way would this program load.
This question has been asked before but I have yet to find a satisfactory answer (maybe I'm dense).Hi Ron,
Sorry about your trouble.
You mention bouncing to an external hard drive.
Were you playing the program (the audio in the song) from your Internal system drive?
What external hard drive is it? Are the drivers for it current? Did you replace the cables going to / from the drive to the computer? Did you try a different hard drive?
Sometimes this disk too slow error message happpens when the FireWire buss is overloaded, and not necessarily by the hard drive. Which audio interface are you using, and is it FireWire?
Please, don't tell me you have an M-Audio FW 410 or the like...
Cheers
