Disk Tray Opens During Power Up: Everyday!

Have a 2nd Gen Mac Pro I got in early '08. Had one major issue when the computer wouldn't wake from sleep due to the now well known power consumption issue. Reinstalled the OS and since have had a virtually flawless experience. Now, there is just one tiny nuisance that I've lived with for the last year:
Ever since I added a disk eject button to the menu bar, the disk tray opens when I turn the computer on! The weird thing is, it happens only about 80% of the time. I honestly only use the drive a few times a month, so I by no means need it to open every morning when I turn on the computer. I have since removed the menu bar button, with no change. I honestly don't recall if adding that button is what caused it. It's been so long ago that I may have tweaked some other settings that could be the culprit. Also note that it opens not when I log in, but during the grey screen about 20 seconds after I push the power button.
Any input is greatly appreciated!
Jason

Go to the startup disk preferences and make sure a disk is selected. See if that fixes it.

  • Hp dvd 1040i Disk tray doesn't open half the time

My disk tray is awful to try to open. I press the button, activity light, lights, but the tray doesn't open. Press and hold the button and the same thing happens. I have to go into Windows Explorer (XP sp3) and right click the drive and select "eject" to get the disk tray open. About 10% of the time the button described above does work, 90% not.
I noticed in my device manager the drive is described as "HP DVD WRITER 1040d". Did I get the wrong driver with this drive?  I cannot find any DVD support on the HP site.

I wanted to add that the "pin method" of opening the drive is also requires multiple tries and seems no more successful overall than just pushing the button repeatedly.  I actually have the best luck getting them to open by applying leverage with the tip of a knife as I push the button.

  • How to open the disk tray?

Working with an old G4 tower, and OS9.
No eject key on the keyboard, and the eject option in the menu at the top is greyed out.
    F12 doesn't work either.
I can get it open by going via iTunes, but surely there should be a less convoluted way of doing this?

    Hi-
"Open tray" does exactly that, opens an empty tray.
"Eject" dismounts a loaded disk, and then opens the tray.
If you don't have an extended, or Pro keyboard (which has an eject button, which also opens and closes the tray) opening the tray is done manually- push the button on the tray cover. Thats how I did it for years in OS 7 thru 9...
Pushing f12 should eject a cd/dvd, if there is a disk to be dismounted. If not, nothing happens.
Holding down the f12 for for a period of time is for OS 10.1.2 and later.

  • Open disk tray in os 9

I've recently sold a second hand eMac to a client who wanted to buy a newer Mac running OS 9 nativly.
This is an eMac of the more recent kind, the white kind with no button on the disk tray case.
But yesterday he asked me how that he should open his disc tray. Apparantly his eject button on his keyboard does not work in OS 9 (but it does in OS X - we've tested this). But there is no button on the case (unless you fidget with that white case thingy and press the black open button with a pensel, inside).
Is there somebody who can give me some advise on where I could find a usefull answer to open the tray from the system (os 9)?
    thx
    Jonathan

The eject key on an Apple keyboard should work as expected on an nVidia graphics 700 MHz or 800 MHz eMac booted directly into OS 9. Use Control Panels> Extensions Manager to check for disabled CD/DVD and keyboard extensions (it may help to select View as Packages).
Check Applications (Mac OS 9) folder / Utilities/ Apple Utilities; there's a utility in there (Eject Extras folder, if I remember right) that can be double-clicked to install an Eject icon in the menu bar (similar to the OS X feature) as well as an Eject control strip module.

  • Disk tray won't open, with or without a disk in

    Hi All,
I believe this is happening since I upgraded Leopard 10.5.5. Basically whenever I have to open the disk tray regardless of the disk status (with a cd/dvd in, without, when the disk is reading or when it's not), I first try with the eject key on the keyboard, but I have to keep it pressed for a lot of time before (not always) the tray opens. Most of the time the key is just unresponsive. Same thing if I try to drag the disk icon to the trash, or try any other methods. Only thing working to far is opening the terminal and using drutil tray eject.
    Any clues?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
It sounds like the key is bad. Leopard did introduce a short delay (actually I think it came in a Tiger update which Leopard continued) so that an accidental tap would not start the eject cycle when someone overshot the delete key, as far as I can figure it out.
    You might try this:
    Go to the following directory:
    System->Library->Core Services->Menu Extras
    and double click eject.menu
This will put a small eject button in the top right menu
If this works all the time when ejecting a disk, then I would strongly suspect the keyboard.
You might reset PRAM, but I don't think that would help for a single key.

  • Disk drive opens by accident

For some tIme I have been turning off my monitors at night by pressing Control Shift Eject.  For the past week or two I have noticed the disk tray on my Mac Pro open for no reason at all.  In the past couple of days have figured out what may have been causing it:  When I press Control Shift Eject to put the monitors to sleep, the tray opens!
Also, if I press Eject, the tray does not close as it used to.  I have to physically push the tray to get it to close.
Has anyone else experienced this?  Is this a known issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rob

    Hi, Ashley -
You may have a couple of separate issues.
Re the drive door opening, that is usually caused by an attached USB device. There is a built-in hardware command on modern Macs - holding the mouse button down during boot instructs the machine to eject all removable media. If an attached device happens to transmit a signal during boot which the Mac interprets as a mouse-down signal, the drive door wil pop open.
The usual culprits for that are a digitizing tablet, a dongle, or a serial adapter like an iMate adapter; but it can be anything USB, including hubs or an extension cable on the keyboard.
Try disconnecting all USB devices except keyboard and mouse, and test. If it behaves, you'll know one of the removed devices is the culprit - it then becomes just a matter of re-attaching them one by one and testing.
Re the date change, assuming no one has intentionally altered the setting then it is a symptom of the internal battery being too weak or dead. The solution - replace the battery. They can be got at places like Radio Shack for about US$15, or for less if you shop on-line.

  • Disk utility hangs during disk verify

Initially 'disk verify' registered errors on exit - minor error/issue it said, some kind of header problem, so I ran disk utility off the install disk. Now the machine's native version of disk utility hangs during disk verify, blue & white spirals forever.
This coincidentally straight after my gmail/google address/account was hacked a couple of days ago.

Have you tried booting in SafeBoot mode (shift key held on start
until login screen appears) then launch Disk Utility and then run
    its 'repair disk permissions' item, selecting the Macintosh HD;
and then note the repair window. It should fix something.
And when Disk Utility is done, quit it, and restart the Mac normally.
{...It is unlikely something from gmail affected your computer unless
you open up unknown sourced emails or go to odd web sites where
something may be downloaded from there, which you would almost
have to install (as admin, etc) for malware to work. You can get and
    try ClamXAV for free to see if it sees any malware virus content.}
If you use Gmail, and do not log in using the https:// (secure http)
you should change the habit and bookmark the secure login site.
And when booted from the Installer disk and running Disk Utility
from there, see about running "repair disk" and not verify. The
repair choice will verify; but verify will not repair. Could be if
you cannot use the Utility to Repair the issues, and the other
SafeBoot mode and the computer's Disk Utility to get it working
you may need to further troubleshoot and/or get third-party tools.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • PXI-6704 AO Voltage Spike during Power Down

Current Setup: PXI 6704 connected to SCB68A. On one of the analog outputs, I have a motor (powered via 24 VDC and controlled by 0-5V via PXI 6704).
During power up (powering up the PXI chassis), 0 volts are shown from the 0-5 V ouput. When I shutdown (i.e. turn off 24 VDC power supply and PXI Chassis, a 3.64 Volt spike develops at the 0-5V output and the motor spins then shuts down as the powersupply is also shut off during this time.
I tried leaving the AO ground open and also grounded to the 24 VDC common. Both result in the same issue.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks for the help.

The chassis is still powered on when the voltage spike develops. This spike occurs when the power supply (24 VDC) is turned off/ disconnected prior to turning off the chassis.
As a current fix, I connected the 0-5 AO from the 6704 to a relay and I keep the relay in the "open state" during power off. Even if the spike develops, no connection to the motor is made.

  • G4 DVD tray opens when started or reset

    Hiya all,
I have a query that hopefully someone here can provide the answer to. I have updated the firmware of my G4 (400) to 4.2.8 . The update worked fine but since then, whenever I either reset/restart the computer or power it up the first time, the DVD tray opens and stays open. I can close it of course, but it opens again when I reset or power up the machine the next time. As a test, before powering up, I have removed the Macally keyboard I am using and then it remains shut -- so it seems to be the keyboard causing this? The question is: Why suddenly now? Before the firmware update, it worked fine! I only have this keyboard (my original G4 one is defective). Surely this can't be? Anyway I can solve this?
    Thanks,
    Rafael
G4 (OS9 & OSX) Mac OS 9.2.x Macally keyboard, original Apple mouse

Telling me to remove the drive so that it doesn't open unexpectedly is like an auto mechanic telling a person whose car door opens unexpectedly when driving to remove the door so it doesn't open: yes, it solves the problem of the door opening, but the car really isn't fully operational without the door. So, that suggestion really isn't very useful.
I was instead hoping that someone could provide some insight into what process is causing the door to open, and that would lead me to a setting I could change. For instance, I wanted to not have to provide a password after the computer comes out of standby, and I found an old post that points to a setting in the Control Panel Power options that is easily changed. I'm guessing that the answer lies somewhere in the logic that controls the power down sequence.

Hello, very new to Macs, only had this a few days. G4 800 mzh 1.5 gb ram running os 10.4. Cd tray opens on boot up and very slow boot up. Tried resetting pram and fsck. No joy with either.

A warm welcome to Macdom & Apple's forums!
You may need to reinstall some things, or maybe even the whole OS.
How much free space is on the HD of what size?
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!

  • Pressed "0" during power on to recover, now its stuck in a loop..

Pressed "0" during power on to recover, now its stuck in a loop.. Can't get back to my normal "C" desktop anymore... how do I DISABLE this "system recovery flag" so it will boot normally back to my OS? Even in safe mode, the system recovery box always pops up. Can I disable this script somehow?

What model is that?  I just wish the system restore box would open once, for me.

  • Hard disk not detected during booting or also it does not show in boot menu.

hard disk not detected during booting or also it does not show in boot menu please tell

you may have a failed hard drive or bad cables, i would check first to see if the hard drive is powering on. if it doesn't try a different power connection, and if it still doesn't start spinning i would say that it is bad and get a new hard drive. If
it does start spinning and just isn't being recognized, try a different sata port if you have the option or a different sata cable all together.

  • Spare hard disk tray and rubber stops for X201

    Hi
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X201. Due to the nature of my work I am frequently required to boot up from a variety of operating systems. Recently, to protect integrity of the OSes, I moved out Ubuntu onto a spare HDD so now I have two hard disks - one that boots into Windows 7 and another that boots into Ubuntu. The problem is that if I connect the Ubuntu hard disk via USB for bootup, it is death slow and I have had instances where the hard disk developed bad sectors because the USB cable came loose and disconnected the drive. The only other option I am using currently is to manually swap the internal HDDs every time I need to change OSes. I was wondering if I can purchase a spare hard disk tray with its rubber mounts so that all I need to do is unscrew the hard disk bay cover (one screw) and swap the drives rather than have to unscrew the entire assembly and then screw it onto the other HDD repeatedly.
Could somebody please provide me with an FRU number for the entire SATA HDD assembly (minus the HDD itself of course but including the rubber rails).
    Thanks
    Sid
