Disk usage seems to cap at 50% - System stalls and freezes.
Model: Samsung Series 7 Chronos (NP700Z5C-s03CA)
Manufacturer: Samsung Electronics
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3635QM CPU @ 2.40GHz
Installed Memory (RAM): 8.00 GB
System Type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor
Windows Edition: 8.1
This issue has been happening for a while now. This is my "gaming laptop" and I currently
only play WoW. Yet even with my settings turned as low as I can get them my computer halts, stalls and completely freezes.
I've noticed that my computer NEVER goes above 50% disk usage. Almost as if its capped at 50%. And when it reaches 50% is when my
problems begin. Normally these programs have most of the usage when it randomly starts freezing at 50%.
- svchost.exe Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted)
- svchost.exe Service Host: Local Service (Network Restricted)
- IAStorIcon.exe IAStorIcon (32 bit)
I guess my issue is why is my disk usage capped to 50% and how do I fix this so it can utilizes all 100% ?
"How did you check your disk usage?" I open my task manager
and look at it. http://imgur.com/ZtDUk1A

Troubleshooting 10.7.2 Intermittent System Stalls and Freezes
Context
Problem is occurring on a PowerMac 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon running OS 10.7.2 with 6 GB RAM.
4 Hard drives installed. Normal startup drive is a 600 GB Western Digital VelociRaptor 3.5" drive. Other drives are Western Digital Caviar Black and Caviar Green drives.
No airport or bluetooth cards installed.
Internet access through ethernet connection to Netgear Gigabit Wireless router.
30 inch Cinema Display, wired mouse and keyboard.
Problem Description
For sometime I have been experiencing intermittent system stalls and freezes. None of my troubleshooting has identified the problem. Sometimes when I am doing something, the system will freeze for a few seconds. There is no spinning ball. I am able to move the cursor but it retains the shape it was for the document I was working in but I can neither shift to another application nor shift to another command with the application I am in. Sometimes this behavior will end and normal operation resume. Or it will continue into a system freeze. The system freezes are such that only a power down will work. Sometimes they occur when the computer is asleep and sometimes when I am actively using it. This morning I did receive a spinning ball but it disappeared but the stall continued until, after a minute, I treated it as a freeze since nothing worked except the ability to move the cursor around the screen.
When I became aware of this behavior, it was after I had incrementally upgraded to OS 10.7.2. I later used the Mac OS 10.7.2 version 1.1 combo update. The problem continued.
Troubleshooting
I have been systematically reviewing the console log to identify messages that might identify problems. For example, I located and removed a couple of files in the Library/StartupItems, Library/LaunchAgents, and Library/LaunchDaemons folders that were associated with applications already removed. I have also dropped several apps from my automatic launch sequence.
I have used several utilities to test RAM and other hardware and all tests have passed.
I have switched drives to startup and while I did not stay on a drive using 10.6.8 long enough to experience a system freeze, I did experience a system stall lasting for several seconds. Therefore I do not think it is a drive problem.
I have reduced to minimum the software being used and system has lots of free memory. Memory tests are good. (In Single User mode ran memtest for 2 runs.) Memory problem is unlikely.
=> Reviewing console messages, I find no correlation between the freezes and what is recorded in the logs.
Any suggestions as to how to proceed at this point? The problem has been solved. In addition to the bad DIMMs, I had a defective video card and there were some software problems. The defective card was replaced and ran well for over 24 hours under intense computing tasks without problems using a Technican personailty. When I used it, I had problems right away. In consultation with Apple, I made the decision to erase (after cloning everything) and do a clean installation of Lion and all of my software. I have not completed installing everything but I have those tools I use on a daily basis now available.
Some Lessons Learned
If you are doing something like this, do not use Migration Assistant to speed up the process. It will bring in everything and you will not really have a clean install.
It is easier if you make the Library on your new Lion drive visible and make the one on your old clone visible too. To avoid permission problems, you need to copy files into a Shared User folder and then copy them into the new destination folder.
If you don't do it right and you find you have problems, check out this link on how to repair User Permissions in Mac OS Lion: http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/15/repair-user-permissions-in-mac-os-x-lion/ -
After installing Adobe Reader 8.1.2 system restarts and freezes
After installing Adobe Reader 8.1.2 system restarts and freezes (hangs, locks up)
I have Windows XP SP2, plenty of spare disk space and Adobe Reader 8.1.1.
The 8.1.2 Reader appeared to install OK and asked for the system to be restarted. When I accepted this it shut down and rebooted as expected,
but just before it was fully restarted it froze and I could do nothing.
I pressed the power switch and tried again but the same thing happened again.
To get back to a usable system I had to boot in safe mode and go back to a restore point.
I don't know if this is relevent but it stopped just before Nortom firewall usually starts.
I am keen to install the new version because of the security fixes.
Can anyone help?
Thanks in anticipationThe link to the Reader forum is at the top of this forum.

The crashes occurred when I was in X and I got dumped to the console when the computer crashed but I still ahd the mouse cursor from X.
When I tried the magic sysrq REISUB combo, the cursor froze but the system didn't reboot.
I have 'kernel.sysrq = 1' in my /etc/sysctl.conf.
Any hints or ideas?
I'm running [testing] and I think the issues started when I updated to linux 3.3.4-1, which is now in [core].
I've found e.g. https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/4/20/347 but I've no idea how to proceed.
Last edited by karol (2012-05-06 20:53:04)I have the same kind of problem. I have two machines and both have crashed since installing kernel 3.3.4-1 this morning. I left one machine running X and came back to find myself in a console with that "unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000002" reported by Karol. I can't find anything in my logs about that, but there was another crash later with the following in the kernel.log.

System stalling and launching difficuilties
Last week my iBook G4 passed away, literally notting would work, was taking half an hour and over to restart and was not opening any programmes. I manged to verify/restore permissions from disk utility and through Onyx deleting all caches and temporary files (figured that it might be the last firefox upgrade so deleted firefox and VLC player just incase), and nothing changed! Than after two days of being neglected and rest it is now working reletively fine. The problem is that it is getting stuck at random points like playing iTunes it stops in the middle of the song and the colour wheel rotates, same happening when using safari & firefox.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this. I thought I might have 2much music in iTunes and some how that was making it stall - so I have deleted a big chunck of my music library as well. Help!! all suggestions wellcome.

I was going to go with Carbon Copy Clone, but SD look better.
SuperDuper is not only easier to use, it actually is better.
Disk Warrior looks a little out of my league, though I would like to solve/repair if possible without buying a new harddrive.
Disk Warrior is, actually, quite easy to use, and it is something that you can use for regular maintenance. I use mine at least once a month, sometimes more often. It is well worth the expense and can save you money in the long run.
If someone can explain how this third party programme would actually work on a dead compter in simple english, that would be more helpful.
If your computer is able to boot from a CD, you will be able to boot from DW. I have mine installed on my external Firewire HDD, and when I want to run it I boot from one of the partitions on my external HDD and run it from there on the PBook. So you have two options in that regard. What it does, is that examines your formatted volume on your HDD, it repairs and rebuilds the directory, and then replaces it, at your command.
Ok, what I plan to do is Traget Mode my iBook to a Power Book and have LaCie HardDrive attachted to it. Copy/Clone my Harddrive to the LaCie. Do you think this would work?
I see no reason why it shouldn't work. If you run into difficulty, post back and someone will help you out.
plus does it make a difference if the LaCie drive is USB or Firewire.
Yes, it does. While you can backup to a USB HDD, you will not be able to boot from it. If you want to make a bootable clone, it has to be a Firewire drive. The value of that is that you can boot from the external HDD and clone back to the internal HDD, if needed, or even run your computer from the external Firewire HDD.
Good luck.

The problem occurs frequently and can effect any website. After about 15 minutes of surfing, I will click on a link and suddenly The word "Connecting" appears in the URL box and little circle (which used to be an hourglass) starts spinning.
After thatI can't connect ti any website, including ones I visited moments before, unless I close down all firefox windows and reopen a new one. It then works fine for a few minutes, before it happens againType in the address bar
about:config
Accept the warning.
In the page that appears, in the Filter box, type
network.http.max-connections
Change the value to 32 (which is probably set to 256 in your case).
Close that page.
Restart the browser. -
My IPhone 4 is experiencing an issue since the latest update. Itunes will not allow the library to sync my entire library. Itunes get stalled and the error message reads ITunes can't find the file for a certain song.
I had the same issue and was told it was because I was using Windows XP. Not sure if the same issue or not, but check that first.

100% disk usage windows 8.1
dear support,
Currently my system is displaying a 100% disk usage with the main cause being system.
I've tried disabling the services superfetch and windows search to no avail.
I'm currently running the windows performance toolkit in order to get more system information. Where should I upload the logfile in order for you to see what's the cause of the problem?Without the trace files or any information about what is shown by Resource Monitor to be using the drive there is no way to provide further suggestions.
The one piece of advice that I can give is, if the application causing 100% disk usage is tiworker.exe, you may want to leave the system running overnight or for an extended period of time. Tiworker.exe
cleans up the core system files following installation of updates and ultimately restores space and performance to your system.

System Crash and Slow Performance
Hello -
I am hoping that someone might help me -- before upgrading (or downgrading dependent of your view) I was happy and go lucky with my Power Mac G5 -- I have connected via firewire two external hard drives (1 TB) and (500 GB) along with my (2X 500GB) internal drives. Since loading leopard, I have noticed that the system "stalls" and seeks data on the external drives first then goes to the internal drives. Is there a way to prevent that from happening and the system check internally first.
Second, is I am noticing that my applications are starting to crash at random, Pages, Excel, MS Word, Safari etc. Is there something out here? Or did I do something wrong.
Frustrated in Boston!
JonathanHi:
I installed as an Upgrade --I did do a disk utility and repaired all permissions and verified the disk. It seems that with the Biggy drive (1TB) not connected the system is a little faster. How do I keep it that while keeping biggy attached?
Thank you so much for your help.

hello i am also having the %100 disk usage problem and am starting a thread to upload my etl. file and see if i can get a solution. thnx. i should also mention i have tried every suggestion i have read on the internet even ones that worked for other people
did not work for me i.e. (switching to high performance power plan, disabling cd drive, etc.) no matter what i try "system" is always utilizing 90%-100% of my hard drive and it is driving me crazy.
i can barely do anything on computer without it taking 10x times longer than it should. ive also run dskchk and boot time virus scans and malware scans. all to no avail. i have more than enough ram and a quad core cpu. when i first purchased my laptop it
was running windows 8 and was lightning fast once i upgraded to 8.1 i think is when the issue started occurring.
i am currently installing the windows assessment and deployment kit right now and will upload my etl. file to the skydrive asap.Jonny
In order to diagnose this problem please follow these instructions
Install the WPT (windows Performance Toolkit) http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4847.install-the-windows-performance-toolkit-wpt.aspx ,
open a CMD prompt with administrative rights (right click it>run as admin) and run this command for 60 secs to capture the high HD usage:
xperf -on PROC_THREAD+LOADER+CSWITCH+FILENAME+FILE_IO+FILE_IO_INIT+DISK_IO+DISK_IO_INIT+DRIVERS+PROFILE -f kernel.etl -stackwalk Profile+CSwitch+DiskReadInit+DiskWriteInit+DiskFlushInit+FileCreate+FileCleanup+FileClose+FileRead+FileWrite -BufferSize 1024 -MaxBuffers 1024 -MaxFile 1024 -FileMode Circular && timeout -1 && xperf -d XperfSlowIOcir.etl*When complete, zip the trace & upload it to skydrive (or some other file sharing service) and put a link to it in your next post.

I have a white Macbook, 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2 GB of memory, Mac OS X, version 10.5.8, purchased in 2008. My Mac keeps warning me that my startup disk is almost full, and indeed Activity Monitor shows that my disk usage has minimal free space (2.31 GB). However, the System Memory tab shows that half my space is free.
Does the discrepancy mean that there is lots of space left on my Mac? If not, how can I identify if some sort of error is filling up my memory? Right now, I have a lot of music and documents stored on my laptop, but nothing else, and I would like to be sure it's those two things that are filling up the space.
What is the recommended method for adding more memory to my Mac, if nothing else? There are two different types of memory in your Mac. There is system memory, more commonly referred to as RAM, and there is disk space. RAM is where the Mac works on data. Disk space is where data is stored for long term storage.
You are in serious danger of causing your Mac to die completely by running it with so little free space on your system drive. It is imperative that you start either deleting or move data off the disk drive. You should have 8 to 10 time as much free space at least at all times for OS X to run will.
A tool that can with cleaning up your disk drive is OmniDiskSweeper. It will tell you the files and fol,der that are using the most space. That will give you good candidates for deletion or movement.

I heard somewhere that Microsoft recommendation threshold of disk usage monitoring is ( free disk space >= 15- 20 %) , if I remember correctly, but how about CPU usage and memory usage monitoring ?
What are Microsoft- or other's-best practice or recommendation of Disk usage, CPU usage, memory usage monitoring to prevent system trouble and improve availability ?Hi,

Time Machine disk usage vs System disk usage
Hi
How is it possible that the disk usage on TimeMachine is higher than the one on the system disk?
Here is output of df:
$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity iused ifree %iused Mounted on
/dev/disk0s2 931Gi 709Gi 221Gi 77% 186031324 57949418 76% /
/dev/disk1s2 931Gi 629Gi 302Gi 68% 164958812 79139480 68% /Volumes/My Passport
Since AFAIK Time Machine does not compress the backups, I'm afraid that some of the data is not
backed up. The My Passport volume holds backups since a few months ago.
How is this possible? Any hint would be apreciated.
Thanks,
NikolaIn the sidebar of a Finder window, select the icon representing your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) At the top level of the volume are folders with these names, among others:

Enter Time Machine and select the most recent snapshot, which is behind the frontmost window. Are those folders present in the snapshot?
