Disk utilities problem

I have the original starcraft and brood war cds in my possession. However, for convience, I wanted to create a .dmg or .iso file for the cds so I don't have to bring them with me to college. I was able to create a .dmg file for the starcraft cd. But, when I tried to do the exact same thing for Brood War, an error showed up, saying "Unable to create 'disk2s1s2.dmg' - Invalid argument." I used the exact same method which worked for the Starcraft cd.
Have anyone else encountered this problem?

  • Disk utilities problems

My sister tried reinstalling Panther and then ran Disk Utilities. Here's her email to me after things went south. Any ideas?
"I am so ******. I installed Mac OS X again and then did Disk Utilities and couldn't get through it. Keep getting "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management tool and cannot continue . Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." --Disk Utility Internal Error
I even ran Disk Utility from the start up disk--same thing. It just gets stuck and tells me to quit and relaunch, and when I hit Quit, it warns me that quitting will mess up whatever disk it's on. Now I can't get into Safari, and the whole thing is a mess. I read in the manual I bought that it's always a problem to reinstall a lower operating system on a higher one, which of course is what I did, and which is what the "Genius" at the Genius bar told me to do."

    Hi Jed,
Could it be linked to the known issue with iTunes 6.0.2?
If so, if you go to the HDD>Library>Receipts folder and get rid of previous iTunes .pkg files (leaving only iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg) that should sort it.

  • Solaris 10 (sparc) disk utilities problems

I'm running Solaris 10 (1/06) on an E450 with 1.5G RAM, 4 300Mhz US-2's. And am having a devil of a time partioning my unmounted spare drives that I'm trying to use to set up Raid 1 and Raid 5. I am logged on as the root user. This is a system I just rebuilt this weekend. I had the same problems with it in the previous build S10 (3/05). I can partition the drives any way I wish during the build process. It's just once I have the server built I can't figure it out.
The drives are a mix of:
    Seagate ST336704LC <SUN36G>
    Seagate ST336605LC <SUN36G>
I have tried using SMC with the following results: If I try to partition the disks (4 or 7 partitions) the drive manager will let me do 2 or 4 of the partitions then simply cease to proceed when the NEXT button is pushed. Also using the SMC if I right click, then do properties on a partition SMC will hang, also if I doubleclick on any partition, mounted or unmounted.
Using the terminal commands Format, Partition, Modify I can change the size of partitions but this does not allow me to Tag the partitions. I can not configure partitions any other way. If I try to modify the partitions using format-partition-"part#" then save infomation, it will be lost when I exit the terminal session.
Any guidance on what I am doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Found it... was not doing 'label' after making my changes. All better and root mirroring has been successful.

  • Disk Utilities always "Reading permissions database."

Each time I repair permissions I get this same dialog and then have to wait "several minutes" before anything happens. Does anyone else have these problems with DU repairing permissions after updating to 10.5.3? (I previously joined this thread, but someone decided to close the topic due to their having no problem with Disk Utilities: problem solved!) This is still going on with my computers ever since the update.

Thank you so much for giving me some confidence in my computer. One of my Apples (desktop G4 duo) has been only problems since I bought it about five years ago. I installed Leopard in the hope that it might be better, and, although I still have some problems, the number has dropped. Then I got up to 10.5.3 and worried that the problems were starting to begin again. Thank you for letting me know that I am not alone.

  • How come my external hard drive is no longer visible in finder even after ticking it in preferences? it shows in the disk utilities but does not allow me to find a problem or fix the problem? Please help.

it shows in the disk utilities but does not allow me to find a problem or fix the problem? Please help. also my external hard drive is a seagate free agent go, 500GB. it is visible on my tv but has no files in it… i'm scared i've lost everything?

Honestly i cannot remember sorry, i got it like 5 maybe 6 yrs ago and just started downloading things to it as the memory on the computer started filling up and when i wanted to see photos/videos on my TV.
My wife did tell me after i had written this post that she did try and record TV to it as it was plugged in. I think by doing so somehow has deleted everything.   It reads on my TV yet has no files in it but won't show up on my computer. hope this helps.
Starting to think it is going to cost more to retrieve files on it than it will be to buy a newer and larger one.

I tried to do a system install, but message said…disk can't be changed. Will a complete erase and install fix this ?
    Everything is backed-up.

    There's hardware and software.
Your drive could physically be in good condition but something has caused the file structure to be messed up (it just happens sometimes).  The directory that keep track of files is corrupt.  Disk Utility can help determine if that is the issue.  In some cases it can repair the problem but it cannot do it to a drive that is being used to boot the system while you are doing that.  You have to boot from another drive.  Some things DU cannot repair and you need to try a stronger utility such as Diskwarrior.
A failing hard drive (one with mechanical issues) can be a cause of file structure issues but this is by no means always the case.  Apart from looking at the SMART diagnosis feature of Disk Utility (and smart isn't totally reliable) there often isn't a way to tell if a drive is failing until it suddenly happens, which is why you need to maintain backups.
In your situation it does sound serious and not just minor directory corruption.  You can try erasing (formatting) the drive,  You may need to do this if it is really corrupt, in which case there could be underlying physical issues.  I use old technology but if you have the patience you can try erasing the drive with the security option of writing zeros once (don't do more unless you are going on a 3 week vacation).  This makes the drive not simply assume everything is okay by forcing it try every part of the drive by writing data.  If something is gong wrong you may find it marks a lot of bad sectors, or flat out refuses to format.  Then you know you need a new drive.

  • Problem with disk utilities

hello, ive bought recentrly a usb handstick from sandisk. when i connect it with my mac, it lightens up but it is not recognised. i know i have to format to FAT with this problem, but when i open disk utilities, i cant find usb handstick on the left of the screen to select is for format....
how can i format when it cant be found at disk utilities?
i have also heard from a guy that there is a little program to download (all ntfs, dont remember it well) and then you dont have to format your handstick device.. true?
    regards

If the drive can't even be seen in Disk Utility then there is a good possibility that either the stick itself, or your USB port is faulty , jerremyy. Even an NTFS formatted drive should be visible.
If the USB port works fine with other devices then you can probably assume that the stick itself is faulty.

  • Problems unpartitioning HD in disk utilities

    Hello,
I'm having difficulties restoring my hard drive into one volume. I'm using disk utilities to unpartition it and I do not want to erase the data on the main volume. The hard drive use to be split into three volumes and I got it down to two volumes, but when I try resizing the main volume to include the 2nd volume, receive this message after I click apply:
"Partition failed with the error: Filesystem resize support required, such as HFS+ with Journaling enabled."
Does anyone know what this means and how I can fix this?
Also, I'm not sure if this has to do with anything, but I just recently upgraded from 10.3 to 10.5.1.

    You did perfectly.
That first line indicates that you have one partition but it is nearly full (95%) and this is dangerous.
You probably do not have enough room to change the partition since there is no room for any temporary files or whatever the partitioning might need. I believe you need a larger disk.
I was asking about TechTools because they have an option to install itself on a small partition called an eDisk which causes some problems with partitioning.

  • Solution to Safari 5 problems: Go to disk utilities and repair permissions

I found this on a discussion page on the internet. Go to disk utilities. Choose Macintosh HD. Choose repair permissions. Seemed to have resolved the issues with freezing pages and not downloading completely. Said you should do these steps every time you upgrade. Seems to have worked because I was experiencing the problems a lot of you guys have been experiencing with Safari 5. Seems to work fine now.

How long it takes depends on the number of applications installed, but generally 1-5 minutes.
The "repair permissions" process only affects applications installed using an installer -- not apps installed by drag-and-drop, and nothing besides applications and their support files. Basically, all it does is compare the files' current permissions with those recorded in a list when the application was installed.
As for being a good idea to do it routinely, there's no reason to. Save for a couple of log files that OS X installs with improper permissions (that change when they are written to), the permissions aren't apt to change unless you are poking around in the /System or /Library directories and modifying files or the contents of files therein.

  • No Hard Drive Or Volume Icon In Powerbook G4 Firewire (aluminium) Disk Utilities: Reads Error: No Valid Packages (-9997)

Whilst performing a zero/erase install on my Powerbook G4 Firewire (aluminium) with an OSX Tiger install disk (Tiger was the OSX i had erased), I had to force quite the installer as it appeared to be stuck on the Chinese script install section. I crashed the Powerbook down using the power button method. Now, when i power up the computer, it stays on the grey screen and just beeps at me. If i insert the install disks (both OSX Tiger or the original Powerbook Panther ones) there is no volume found  during the install process. In disk utilities no hard drive icon or volumes appear in the left hand list, just 2 headings regarding the OSX install disk. I have clicked 'Verify Disk Permissions' on these headings and receive this message in the action box: Error: No Valid Packages (-9997). All other options in disk utilities are not available to use (partitions section etc), as there is no hard drive recognized to perform anything on. I presume my erase install has wiped out my previous OSX Tiger without installing some essential on the Powerbook (receipts perhaps?). My Powerbook was working 100% before this install attempt. It's a very lightly used machine with no noises/whirrs coming from the hard drive that would suggest failure of some kind. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks for your advice old comm guy.
I have run the Hardware Test as supplied with the Powerbooks install disks and everything has passed. I presume i can put my mind at rest about it being a problem in any of those departments. I have been browsing for a couple of weeks now and think my problem could be a loss in receipts/permissions somewhere. I remember looking for a lost file awhile back using a hard drive search programme through Terminal. It filled my hard drive almost to the maximum with unwanted retrieved files, it took me hours to erase all this again (never found the document i was looking for either). Perhaps a receipt was erased/trashed at this time?. Sometime later (prob weeks) i performed a fresh OSX install to give me an uncluttered faster running machine (I do this once a year). I zero erased the hard drive (including free space) and it was during this install that i had to force quit. It seemed to be stuck loading the Chinese Script so i had no option. After this the problem as described above has been persistent. Is there a way to restore receipts/permissions through Terminal or something like that?. Or maybe a procedure that one has to do when installing a new hard drive?. A step by step guide from someone would be a real help as i am not really confident using these advanced procedures.

  • Both time machine drive and startup disk can't be repaired by disk utilities and needs to be formatted!!??

ok so i accidentally remove the USB while my laptop was backing up to the time machine partition on my external HDD. I plug it in again, and no time machine partition. just the other part (fat 32 partition). so i open disk utilities.. the partition is there but grayed out. so I repair it.. and it says it cant repair it i need to back it up and format it. ok great.. i tried to do that and it said it can't access the disk.. super.
any way.. i don't know  why i decided to check my other drives and see how they're doing.. and it turns out.. my startup disk has problems.. and you guessed it.. it can not be repaired:D so i restart in recovery mode.. did it again.. and?  it can't be repaired.. i need to backup the drive and format it... (like the same problem with the time machine partition) just great! so i restart the laptop.. it safe boots.. I dnno why.. and everything is like it was.. I mean I don't see a problem with my drive.. i can do everything but that "cant repair" thing is scaring me.. what should I do? just leave it? or brace myself for a possible HDD death? I DON'T EVEN HAVE A BACKUP)
    help me i feel vulnerable

As you have indicated, you don’t want to touch the partitions on your existing external drive because it has live files in the FAT32 partition for which there are no copies anywhere else.  That leaves you with two sets of data that are currently not backed up: your FAT32 partition and your system drive.  I suggest you need at least one more external HD for backups.
A “backup” drive should never have live files on it because should that drive fail all the live files on it would be lost.  So you need a second external HD anyway for a proper backup scheme.
I would partition a new disk as you have the current one and then copy all the FAT32 files form the old disk to the new one.  Then you can try repartitioning the old drive.  I would then setup a backup scheme to periodically clone the new FAT32 drive onto the old FAT32 one, using the new disk for your live FAT32 files and dedicating the old disk to backups.  You could also continue using the old disk for Time Machine backups.
You can use Mac cloning software such as Carbon Copy Cloner to maintain the cloned backup copy of your FAT32 data.

  • External hard drive corrupted after trying to fix it, in macbook Disk utilities

    hello,
After fixing my macbook internal drive with disk utilities, i put to verify my WD external hard drive, that acuse me some errors.
Well i don´t no why but i put the disk utility run for de WD external drive. A few time later , shows up a message that the disk couln't fixed, to format them.
After that my external WD wasn't recognize by any computer, i think the modules of the disk was corruped.
Does any one knows how can i invert ou fix the problem, without formating?
    Thank you

I assume your asking because you have data on that drive to recover first.
Your going to need to install something like Data Rescue on your computer's boot drive, then connect the problem drive and another external drive with enough space to send all the recovered files too.
Data Rescue takes a long time, it reads the 1's and 0's of the files themselves off the drive, not listening to anything else, it will cost you $100, but that's the going price for software like this.
The option if that doesn't work is to take the internal hard drive out of the external case and use a SATA to USB adapter cable $40, then try the above Data Rescue method again.
If you don't care about any data on the drive, then just toss it. Drives are cheap.

  • Disk Repair Problem

I tried doing a disk repair on my start up disk (booting from the Tiger Install DVD, using Disk Utilities). I keep getting an error that Disk Repair can't repair my disk due to an Exit error. Of course it does not tell me what the error is. The same occurs when I just do a Disk Verify. Disk utility runs and gets right to the end when I get the same error - Disk verify quits telling me it can't verify due to an error on exit. BTW, I have not noticed any problems using the disk. Also, I did repair permissions.
    Any ideas on this on??

DS - thanks for the info. I do have Techtool Pro 4 but when I tried to create an e-drive on my second drive, it crapped out about 1/2 way though the install. I will probably get Disk Warrior first and give that a shot. I believe the problem may be in the B-Tree. I don't think it is a hard drive (hardware) issue but one with the directory. The drive is not really giving me any problems at this point. It was just weird when I did a verify.
    Thanks again for the info.

  • New Mac with major permission and disk-write problems

Right, so I'm pretty new to Mac, after getting my first Mac computer (a 17-inch MacBook Pro) at the end of January this year. It's been great so far and I love the thing, but I've suddenly encountered some crazy problems which I'm pulling my hair out over because I have tried everything to fix them, and have had no luck.
I'll try to include as many details as possible, and I'm prepared to bear with anyone who asks me about something I've alrady tried, just so I can get this sorted.
Okay, so first of all, the main problem seems to be with permissions, mostly with disk-write permissions. Any apps that I want to install that required keychain access will no longer install. I enter my keychain password, hit Return, and the dialog box closes without continuing. So I hit "Install" again and it becomes a never-ending cycle of entering my password to no avail. Now, this happens with ANY application that requires keychain access to install. It is not limited to any particular application. I know my password is right because the box closes, and if I enter it wrong, the dialog box shakes because it is incorrect.
Furthermore, it seems keychain access is problematic in other apps. If I want to authenticate something, it will do the same thing as I mentioned before, meaning I get nowhere with the application.
From here, it gets worse. If I download something (anything), then restart my computer, it is still there. As it should be. However, if I delete an APPLICATION (not just any file) OR change preferences for some programs (one in particular that I specifically don't want starting up on.... startup), including through System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login Items, they will not save. This is driving me insane. For instance, I downloaded some free apps from the Mac App Store to try out, but decided I didn't want them. I tried to deleted them from the app folder and succeeded. Emptied trash. Gone. Restart, and.... they're back? So I tried to uninstall them via the Mac App Store, once I found you could do that. Again, it didn't work. Any Login Items preference changes don't stay after a restart.
Originally, none of this was a problem and everything was working fine. The first sign that something was wrong would be Apple Mail often asking for passwords, usually for my Hotmail accounts, saying that they were rejected by the server (but are correct passwords, I get the emails from the accounts, and the passwords are always accepted once I type them in, only to be asked for them some time later on for no apparent reason). At the time, I tried to repair the keychain, tried deleting and recreating the mail account entries and what not, but nothing helped. It still happens, but at the time, it was more of a niggly thing than an outright problem.
I should also mention that I did use BootCamp to install Windows 8 on a small partition, but after I couldn't boot back into Mac (I didn't realise you had to use the Option key whilst booting), I found out that you had to hold the Option key to get back into Mac, then used BootCamp to get rid of Windows. Everything was fine so far. Until I decided to reinstall Windows 8 with BootCamp. This is where things started going wrong. I decided to install a bootloader to make it easier for me to boot between the two systems. I was tossing up between rEFIt and Chameleon, and decided that rEFIt would be the best for my needs. So I downloaded and installed it, which seemed to go fine. Until I restarted. Mac would endlessly load (the spinning grey dots with the Apple logo).
Now, I actually managed to fix this, but I should probably go into more detail. First of all, holding the option key and selecting my Mac partition would allow me back into Mac, and same with Windows 8. At this point, I decided to uninstall Windows 8 to try fix my problems, except now BootCamp was giving me errors. I believe it was something about being unable to unmount the disc, but it may have been a different error. I don't entirely remember. So then I decided to try getting rid of rEFIt. I followed the instructions on the official site but it didn't work. So then I tried deleting the files with root (sudo) access through terminal. Which also failed....
So to the Recovery partition. Booting into Disk Utilities, I repaired permissions, which worked fine, and repaired the disk. I believe I had run the disk repair a few times before to try to fix BootCamp when it stopped working. Anywaym it had worked before, but this time, it said that it was corrupted and could not be repaired. Something about needing to reinstall Mac OS X. With all my files on this computer and currently nothing to back it up with (eventually I will have something to do backups with, but it'll have to wait a few months), I'm not going to do that.
Finally, I managed to delete the rEFIt files through Terminal within the Recovery partition. I ran permission repair and disk repair again to clean anything up. Disk repair gave me the same error, but now I could get back into Mac without holding the option key on every **** boot.
Now more problems had presented themselves. I decided that the lock under Login Items was probably preventing me form successfully changing my startup items. Trying to unlock it did the same thing as I previously mentioned. Type in my password, keychain accepts it, then nothing happens. The keychain settings were already defaulted so that keychain would stay unlocked after authenticated, and all stuff like that. Using "Get Info" on anything has permissions locked and again, I cannot unlock to change them, although looking at a PDF file just now, whilst still locked, it would allow me to add or remove users, so maybe that's not completely accurate. I believe I tended to look at the system folders though, and my name wasn't under ownership, although I don't believe it was meant to be, but I was hoping that maybe that would fix the problem. I guess not.
At this time, I still had my Windows 8 partition sitting around and couldn't get rid of it. I heard of the manual way to do it through Disk Utility. I tried this in Mac OS X, and through the Recovery partition, but neither worked. An error about being unable to unmount the drive. I finally found a way to remove it. Honestly, I don't completely remember how I did it, but I believe it was through a command line, uh.... command. Now I had free space that I couldn't use to expand my Macintosh HD partition back to full size, again with the unable to unmount error. Finally, I fixed this by booting from a Mac OS X installation disc that I happened to have, and using Disk Utility off of that. After that, Disk Utility no longer gave me errors for disk repair.
However, my other problems all still remained. I had written a little list of things I found on the internet for fixing my problems. One solution was to use "resetpassword" through terminal under the Recovery partition, then select Macintosh HD and select "Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs". That didn't work until I tried it through the Disk Utility on the Mac OS X installation disc. That worked, and once I was back into Mac, Spotlight started indexing again. However, nothing else had happened.
I should also mention that keychain access isn't completely non-existent for me. Setting up a new WiFi connection worked for me (that is, connecting to a new network), but now every time I connect to the network, I have to authenticate it. However, it does accept my keychain password and eventually connect.
Now, another thing on my list to try was single-user mode, and using "/sbin/fsck -fy" until everything was okay. Well, the first time, it found a bunch of errors, then fixed itself up. Then it was all okay. But nothing had changed. So trying again, I this time used ?/sbin/mount -uw /" which I believe is meant to allow writing access to the drive. Now when running "/sbin/fsck -fy", I had an error. Specifically, "Journal need to be replayed but volume is read-only".
So that's pretty much where I am up to at the moment. It seems to be a poblem with write permissions, possibly among other things. If it was Windows, I might be able to work it out easier, but being new to Mac, I'm still finding my way around. I guess this is a good learning experience, but it's not fun to have to deal with it so early on.
If anyone can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it. I have tried many things, so if you suggest something that I have tried and possibly forgot to mention, I'll let you know, but any help is still helpful, even if only eliminating possible problems/causes/solutions.

Actually you first post is so long that most people just glance at it and move on. To say the least you are very verbose.
Your problem stems from something going wrong with permissions, as you know. How and why that happen is usually a user error of some type.
You can try to repair permissions and see if that corrects it. If not I will leave other options to someone that may know more about the permission system on a Mac.
