Disk utilities: storage system verify or repair fail

The Verify failed when checking the drive at the physical disk level, but the main voulmes passed.  Is this "normal", i.e. should I just be checking the volumes?
Thanks

10.7 boots into a Recovery partition (command c boot) then can check the condiiton of other partitions on the drive.
To repair the entire drive it the computer needs to be booted from Lion w/Disk Utility on a external drive
Either use Carbon Copy Cloner and make a option key bootable clone on a blank external drive and use Disk Utility that way or create a data recovery drive
Most commonly used backup methods explained
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive

In order to repair the system disk you must boot from another disk drive. The operating system will not allow the disk drive it is running from to be repaired.
Book the MBP and create a bootable clone on an external disk drive. Then boot from the external disk drive and repair the system disk drive from there.

  • Error: Storage system verify or repair failed

My MBP frooze a couple times yesterday; I loaded Disk Utillity and with the top level "122.33 GB APPLE SSD" selected I tried both "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk." I get a pop up that says, "Alert: Storage system verify or repair failed." On the detailed section it states: "Problems were found with the parition map which might prevent booting. (In red letters) Error: Storage system verify or repair failed." When I select "Macintosh HD," I encounter no problems with Repairs or Verify Disks/Disk Permissions. I have always been able to select both and do the Verify/Repair options and haven't had any errors. I am running Lion and do have encrytption enabled. When I boot in recovery mode, I am able to Verify and Repair Disks on the "122.33 GB APPLE SSD" level without any problems. Only when I boot normally and attempt to Verify or Repair the top level. I am thinking its an encryption related error and not actually an issue. Any thoughts?

My sert up looks simple in 10.6 and 10.7 disk utility             500GB Physical HD
slightly to the right virtual volume partition (icon)1 Mountain Lion
                                                                                                            2 Lion
                                                                                                            3 Snowleopard
                                                                                                            4 empty
In Lion Disk Utiity on First Aid if I choose 500HD and repair disk  In red it states alert storage system verify or repair failed disk permissions are greyed out that means they can not be clicked.
If I choose Mountain lion (I am booted in Lion) it will repair permissions and veryfy and repair disk.
If I choose Lion (I am booted in Lion) it will verify and repair permissions but only verify disk. NOT repair !
( it is said it can not repair itself so we need to be booted into lion recovery disk disk utilities)
If I choose Snow leopard (I am booted in Lion) it will verify and repair permissions and verify and repair disk.
In Mountain lion the partition map or set up is strange.
                                                                                 500GB Physical HD

Do I have 6 partitions 2 Lions 2 Mountain lions?
And on Mountain lion and lion on sub volume only FirstAid and Partition is shown not erase or restore !
In Snow leopard disk utility Mountain lion and lion shows as incompatable so can even partitioned or repaired.
When partitioning and installing 3 OSX's on 1 HD the partition table changes with Mountain lion and Lion.
And if you have Vile fault turned on you can not access the Mountain lion and lion repair permissions and repair disk ,also can not access the recovery disk when booting using options.
That means you have to turn Vilefault or Gate keeper off.
Apple Japan said it does not support more than one OS per HD !
It is a resl mess they do not fix these things and show photes and explanations of different scenrios on disk utility.
we want to use all our OSX/s on the same machine because many applications do not work on different platforms.
They should work out a solution when bring out new OS

  • 2011 macbook pro OSX maverick, error: storage system verify or repair failed

    Hi there,
My 2011 Macbook pro which came with Lion but now upgraded to Maverick 10.9.5 has just crashed. It will start up in recovery mode but when I've gone to the apple logo to start up from disk, it shows the disk but doesn't start up from it I just get a grey screen.
I'ved tried to verify and repair the disk and get message: 'The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partitions file system'
I also get: error, storage system verify or repair failed.
    S.M.A.R.T staus is verified
None of the key commands for start up seem to work, ie - option - shift - command P,R etc.
I can't re-install operating system as it is an older version, ie Lion and have updated to Maverick via APP store so no way of re-installing OSX.
    Any ideas???

I have the same issue. Not able to fix it.

  • Storage system verify or repair failed

Had problems with Time Machine and accessing external backup drive. Both Mac Hard drive and extenal drive encrypted and external drive not opened with password. Eventually located corrupt file on external drive. Have managed to get time machine to backup to external hard drive but now get above error message when attemting to verify/repair Mac Hard drive. Along with :
Invalid Volume Header @ 0: Incorrect block type
Invalid Volume Header @ 749296614912: Incorrect block type
Disk0s2 is not a CoreStorage volume.
    Obviously disk will not repair.
Any ideas as to what to try next (is this where LIon Recovery comes in, or does it even work for 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo Macs?)
    Any advice gratefully received.

Answered my own question. Went to Lion Recovery Partition [Restart + (Command-R)]. Ran Disc Utility in Lion Recovery. No problem with Macintosh HD. Restarted & showing no problem on verification now.
Found a few other postings going back to O/S 10.4 detailing similar problems both with internal and external drives. General consensus looks like First Aid Verify can throw up spurious errors at times .... Hope they are right

  • OS X could not be installed on your computer File system verify or repair failed

Downloaded OS X Yosemite update through Apple Store and attempted to install it on my mom's 2013 21" iMac running OS X 10.9.5.
However, a few minutes into the process I received this message:
OS X could not be installed on your computer
File system verify or repair failed. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.
Tried restarting several times to no avail. Ran disk utility and saw:
    Invalid node structure.
File system check exit code is 8.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired.
Repair disk button not available for Mac HD, but is available for 1TB Apple HDD. Is there any way to abort the OS X Yosemite installation?

TThe Disk Utility cannot repair the disk it resides on. The way I get around this is to use an external hard disk as my startup disk and run did utility from that. Most time then the primary disk on your iMac can be repaired.

  • Error:  File System verify or repair failed :-(

I'm hoping that someone here can tell me that I don't really have to worry about my new 13 inch unibody Macbook, which I bought last November. I'm travelling until April and, of course, don't have my install (or any other disks) with me.
Today I installed some software and then ran 'repair disk permissions' to check that all was in order - which it was. However, my finger slipped (I actually find the new trackpad quite inaccurate from time to time but I guess that's my fault)- instead of closing Disk Utility I clicked on Verify Disk. I thought I would let it run its course ... imagine my surprise when this was the result ....
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”

    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.

    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 41730138 instead of 41731179)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Can anyone throw some light on this problem for me, please?

What software is on the package? I believe Tech Tool Pro can do a directory repair job though Diskwarrior is, as the other poster observes, premier.
Sometimes running verify on the same drive from which you are booted can produce spurious errors because the drive is constantly changing and verify can't keep track of everything and reports errors.
Errors should be taken seriously and corrected before things get worse. It could ultimately end up in your losing files and having the computer crash. If nothing else make sure you have a backup of your data files.
You can try running Verify in Safe Mode where the computer is running under a more restricted environment and see what it says.
[Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393]
[What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392]
[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
Safe boot mode runs a directory check command similar to that used by Disk Utility's repair. In Tiger it ignores some stored information (cache) that is normally read that speeds up the boot process, and it moves some other caches to the trash. It also uses only System fonts and disables all Startup Items, third party items, and any Login Items.
Failing all else there are several tools that run from Single User Mode, including fsk and Applejack. I would run these after backing up the files since occasionally any repair attempt (even with Diskwarrior) can go wrong and make things worse.

You will need Disk Warrior to fix the problem if Disk Utility cannot. However, to fix with DU you need to do this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Disk Utility Error- Filesystem verify or repair failed.

I ran Disk Utility and before it finished I received Filesystem verify or repair failed error message.
It says to run repair but I can't
HELP!!! What do I do?  What is wrong?
    Thanks

Hi , and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Why is os x not installing on my Mac book it keeps telling me to restart the computer an saying file system verify or repair failed

nit now I can't use my computer wth

What is the EXACT model/year MBP and what OSX are you trying to install?  What is the OSX that is currently installed?
It seems you may have HDD issues.
    Ciao.

  • Disk Utility: First Aid Failed, Filesystem verify or repair failed

    Ouch,
So for some reason podcasts suddenly stopped downloading to my external music HD. Checked the permissions on the HD and it wasn't giving me access to the permissions even though I had permissions. Ejected the drive, mounted, ran Disk Utility and got the message above (subject of this post). The details box says the following:
    Invalid Sibling Link
    Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
So.... is my external drive dead? Can it be fixed? Is everyone going to recommend pro tools and disk warrior again? Anyone that has a bright idea, I am all ears. I have Time Machine running, but I am not sure how I would restore the drive from that and get my data back. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Well, oddly, it just fixed itself. "Bogus" you say? It is really odd. It just mounted itself, all my audio is working and podcasts writing to the drive again. I ran disk utility again and it ejected the drive and I got the same error message. I'm getting tons of conflicts on my system ever since I did my clean install of Leopard, so I imagine it has something to do with that.

  • WD External disk Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed

    Hi all
My Western Design external hard drive has started to run really slowly when accessing data as well as transferring. After plugging the usb to the mac it takes about 30 seconds to pick up the drive with a DISK ERROR message. I have been into disk utilities and tried verifying the disk and repairing with the following message coming up...

    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks

It sounds like your WD drive is failing. Download Smart Utility from http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php and see what it says about the health of the drive.
If you scan various discussion groups, you'll see issues with WD external drives, as the electronics can be problematic.

No, it can do that. There are clearly other issues.
anyway an error came back saying the disk was corrupt
The install disc or the HD?
now I thought that sorted it. but after doing the updates. and then going to repair the disk permissions/repair the disk it came back with same error. and also the hardware test is still failing.
The system will never be stable until the HD directory is repaired.
    - is the version of the hardware tester I have not compatible with the OS or the firmware i have upgraded to? or does the tester just check the integrity of the hardware regardless of firmware & os vers.
If this is the AHT disc that shipped with your MBP, it is fine, regardless of what OS you have installed.
I really would prefer to not start from scratch again. But could this be an user account problem?
    No.
I'll set up a new usr acct and use that for a while. just a pain to bring the files over from my current usr acct to the new one.
I believe that's a waste of your time. As has already been stated, at least one of the issues is the damaged HD directory. Until/unless that is repaired, what you install on the HD isn't going to work correctly, if at all. The big question is, is some other part of the hardware causing the directory damage, or did the directory take a freak "hit" and repairing it will resolve things? It's quite possible that bad RAM or the logic board could have caused the directory damage. You're either going to have to bring it in to an Apple Store "genius" bar and see how much they'll test for free, or do some things yourself. For things you can do yourself, apart from trying one RAM module at a time, and running Repair Disk repeatedly (I don't think that's going to do it), you're going to need to either get your hands on Disk Warrior (or comparable utility), or a different HD, or try the HD in an external enclosure, or get your hands on some different RAM to try.
