Disk Utility 11.0 (252) crashes system after 10.5.1
After doing the auto update to 10.5.1 Disk Utility honks the system to where I have to force a power down.
The auto update was something I have never seen before. I was working on documents when out of the blue the "check for updates" said I needed to update to 10.5.1. I opted for "Not Now". Later I went to check for updates and allowed it to install 10.5.1. It started instantly!! Where did the update file come from? There was zero activity on my ethernet switcher and router. Did it load without my knowledge while I was working on the computer earlier?? It went instantly to the blue screen and only took a couple minutes to update and restart. That's not normal!! BUT I couldn't do anything after the restart as I was running at 100 percent CPU time for well over an hour. Activity Monitor showed that installdb was consuming 97 percent. Who/what is that?? I have never seen installdb before or after.
After over an hour all seemed okay (3% CPU when doing nothing). I opted to check a brand new USB 2.0 drive I bought to do TM but could not make it work after doing a format (tried all options) under 10.5. 10.5.1 promised a fix for such NTFS drives. That's when I brought up Disk Utility. It can't even do a verify disk on my internal startup drive without taking the system to it's knees. Spinning pizza of death. Force quit will not work. Only a forced power down will get the computer going again. Monitoring Activity Monitor during this you see nothing but red lined processes (not responding).
I am in panic. Is my boot drive okay as now I can't check anything. I booted from 10.5 Install Disk and ran Disk Utility and it says the drive is okay and a couple permissions are bad (GUID) being one of them but otherwise the internal seems okay. I downloaded the standalone installer and ran it. It went fine as far as I can tell. But Disk Utility 11.0 (252) still crashes the system big time.
How can I fix Disk Utility?? Can I throw it into the trash and run the standalone installer again??
Thanks for any help.
I got the same thing - only even worse:

Airport disk utility can't read time capsule after a relocation
airport disk utility can't read time capsule after a relocation. Wether I connect ethernet or wifi, airport doesn't read it. Even after reset.
Do a full factory reset.. and you will need to reconfigure it.. that is the usual process when you move networks.
You can do a fully manual setup though. The new v6 utility is just lousy at locating the TC.. if you still have a computer.. even a PC running windows it will do fine on v5 as long as the TC is not the latest model..
Or use iOS version airport utility.. it also seems to have less issues than the mac version. -
How do I use Disk Utility to help install Mountain Lion after many failed attempts?
I tried to install Mountain Lion from an App onto my MacBook.
First it said that my disk was damaged to i tried to repair it.
Didn't work.
Then it said I didn't have enough room to install Mountain Lion.
Then I tried to restore Lion.
Didn't work.
Then someone suggested I reset my PRAM.
Tried that, and now I am stuck.
I can't restore any of my backups from timeline.
I can't reinstall OSX because my drive is now locked.
And I don't know how to use Disk Utility to solve this problem!
Any suggestions welcome... I'm in way deeper than I understand and feel like anything I do is making this worse!I gather that your computer is in a less than satisfactory state, so the process below will basically start you from scratch, but you shouldn't lose anything.
Okay, can you inspect the Time Machine Backups with the Finder? About two or so folders down you should start seeing your system files. Assuming all your files are present.
Important^
You probably have an installation disk that came with your macBook. Boot from that CD and install from the CD.
Run the verify disk utilites and repair utilities if necessary.
You may want to erase your disk from the CD's disk utility. This will erase your Hard Drive (make sure you do not erase your backups, as that would be very bad).
Once the installation is complete, run all system updates. Either look through your backup and find the Mountain lion installation app, or download it from the app store again.
Run the ML installtion app.
Once everything is up and running, move all files and folders you want from your TM backups and you should be good to go. -
Tiger Disk Utility filled up target AND system disk, CANNOT reboot!
I used Apple Disk utility to securely erase free space on a target drive on my laptop. Disk Utility filled both my target disk and system disk (system disk was not even specified in the erase procedure). Both disks have ZERO bytes free. The System disk will NOT startup and I cannot use DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory cuz there is no space. Tried using terminal to rm temp files, but it did not see the system disk.
*Problem Path:*
1) Laptop (Leopard OS X current version) video stopped working. Likely known problem with Graphics card.
2) Connected G5 (Tiger) to Laptop via Firewire with Laptop working in Target Disk mode (data only mode).
3) Laptop disk showed up as a disk volume on G5.
4) Used Apple disk utility on Tiger G5 to securely erase FREE disk space on Laptop disk drive B4 taking it in to get repairs. Amount to be securely erased was appr 65 to 70 GB.
5) Left G5 Tiger disk utility to work overnight... had to interrupt next day. Restarted..
6) Next day, the G5 disk utility said that it would be an est. 97 hours to complete. Stopped process.
7) Both target disk and system disk showed that 0 bytes (yes, ZERO bytes free) were free on either drive.
8) Attempted to restart with literature saying that you can restart Disk Utility as though it would delete temp files and start again. System could not be found (folder/face/folder/face showed on the screen)
*Attempted Solution:* (DW ~ DiskWarrior 4)
1) Started system up using DW CD. System disk came up as unknown.
2) Used Disk Warrior to rebuild directory on disk, but I believe that there is NO space at all. Disk Warrior took a very long time...more than an hour.
3) Terminated DW (it was still verifying directory)
4) Restarted system from Tiger install.
5) Attempted to use Tiger Disk Utility to verify system disk (System still can see it, but won't mount it-- name is now disk1s3 or something like that). Disk Utility said that disk directory had problems and needed to be repaired. Ran the repair, but Disk Utility said that it could not be repaired.
6) Quit Disk Utility and entered into the terminal to see if I could access the disk through unix commands. Access volumes from root. Only the other disk on the system showed up, not the system disk. So attempt to delete temporary files that MAY have been created by Disk Utility could not be done.
7) Restarted system using DW. Drive showed up as Unknown. Clicked on [Apple key] rebuild to do scavenge function. Left it for two hours. Little to no change. Left it to work all night.
HELP!
Will DiskWarrior use other volume on system or memory to save off or rebuild directory of bad drive? Anyone know of a utility that can help?
ANY HELP you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated. I have been put behind on research in my graduate studies and am in a terrible situation in now BOTH of my systems are inaccessible.Hello HB3, and a warm welcome to the forums!
8) Attempted to restart with literature saying that you can restart Disk Utility as though it would delete temp files and start again. System could not be found (folder/face/folder/face showed on the screen)
You really shouldn't use a lower OSes DU to work on a higher one.
2) Used Disk Warrior to rebuild directory on disk, but I believe that there is NO space at all. Disk Warrior took a very long time...more than an hour.
What version of DW?
Anyone know of a utility that can help?
If DiskWarrior can't fix it, you might try Data Rescue II...
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
(Has a Free Demo to see if it could or not, but you'll need another drive to recover to).
Or FileSalvage...
http://www.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?%20mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
to recover what you can, both can work when Disks are unmountable. -
My Safari quits unexpectedly. I ran "repair permissions" in disk utility and I think is started happening after that.

Why is Disk Utility "Permissions" only enabled on system drive?
Hi,
Shouldn't Disk Utility's "Verify Permissions" and "Fix Permissions" be enabled for all mounted volumes? Including disk images? Same with "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk".
I'm seeing them enabled only for the system drive.
Thank you,
DonShouldn't Disk Utility's "Verify Permissions" and "Fix Permissions" be enabled for all mounted volumes? Including disk images?
When Apple (and some third-party) software is installed, data is written in the Receipts folder incuding file permissions. Disk Utility uses this information to verify and repair permissions. There is no such information for other files or drives.
Same with "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk".
They should work for other drives.
I'm seeing them enabled only for the system drive.

Disk Utility and iMovie '08 crash
hello, my first post. ever since I installed Leopard I cannot open iMovie"08. Window opens then rainbow wheel spins forever. Must force quit. iMovie '08 will open if I change user account. Also, Disk Utility crashes. If I verify permissions, this stops running with the "less than 1 minute remaining" message, but it will never finish. Repair permissions just crashes. Anyone know what is going on? This machine is less than 2 months old and I have very little on it yet.
You might do better posting in the Leopard 10.5 discussions.
But since you are here, goto user (whatever your user name is)>library>preferences and trash (delete) the file called com.apple.imovie.plist
You do not have to reboot.
The next time you open iMovie it will create this file again, but It should not be corrupted.
Try the same thing with DU user>library>preferences>com.apple.DiskUtility.plist

Disk utility only showing 31gb of 80gb after format
I just swapped a western digital 80gb hard drive from a windows computer into a powermac G3 and i fired up disk utility to format it for a mac, everything formatted fine but it is only showing 31.5gb out of the entire 80. Any idea what to do here? I know i am posting in the g5 forum but i figured i would get a quicker response here and a quick response is what i need. Thanks in advance
Instead of using the Erase tab in Disk Utility, go to the Partition tab. Select +1 Partition+ for +Volume Scheme+. If there is one on the screen, click on the Options button and make sure +Apple Partition Map+ is selected as the +partition scheme+. Apply those changes and see if you get the rest of the space to be recognized.

My computer seems to have been polluted by some virus os whatever, which the Antivirus software does not seem to find. It is turning off on it's own, without any apparent intervention, while iddle.
Then I read about this issue with Remote Management. IS there any connection here?
thanksYou do not need the Antivirus for your Mac.
The disk utility warning can be ignored.

External HD Disappeared on Finder and Disk Utility, but Still Appeared in System Report
I have two external HDs directly connected to the USB ports. One is working properfly. But the other one would disappear from the Finder and Disk Utility. However, it still shows up in the Hardware USB section of the Sysetm Report.
What does this mean? Thanks. You are right. I need to select the device to show its details. The attached screenshots are from the good HD and bad HD. On the good HD, it shows more info.
Any explanation or suggestion? I contacted OWC and they are sending me a replacement. But how do I know it is a OWC HD issue or OS X 10.9.3 sleep issue? -
CC Particle World crashing system after clean reinstall
I was having some issues with my new mac, CS4 was running crashy after a big crash with system that occured when closing out the OS. Apple had me erase and reinstall the operating system. I reinstalled CS4, everything seemed to go smoothly. My after effects project I was working on before the reinstall opened up fine, but when I went to turned off the Live Update switch I got an error message (which i unfortunately did not write down). I restarted the computer, did not get the error message when flipping the live update switch, but I tried to apply cc particle world to a solid and I got the error message "After Effects error: crash occured while invoking effect plug-in "CC Particle World"" and it crashed out of after effects auto saving the file. I tried to apply CC particle world to a solid in a brand new composition, same thing. This is a brand new install with Mac os 10.6.2. I never had this problem before the reinstall. If any one has any advice, please let me know. thanks.
> I was having some issues with my new mac, CS4 was running crashy after a big crash with system that occured when closing out the OS. Apple had me erase and reinstall the operating system.<
Apple's tech support has only a few scripts and you got one of the worst. Next time, go looking for help among Mac users first. apple.com has a discussion area for OS10 and you can search apple.com for relevant knowledge base articles.
Crashing the Mac OS is not unheard of but "closing out the OS" is something I have never heard of anyone doing. Did you mean you shut down the macintosh and experienced this crash?
Umm, never mind, it's all irrelevant and this is NOT a Macintosh assistance forum.
Let us knwo what happens after Todd's suggestion of updating your CS4 apps.

Robohelp 6, crash system after insert new topic
Hi,
i have a problem with Robohelp 6. when i try to insert a new topic in one exsisting project, created with the same program, the system crash, so it's not possible to add new topic.
Someone have ever had that kind of problem or know the reason?
Thank youWhere is your RoboHelp project located. If on a network drive, move it to a local drive and try again. You should never work on a RoboHelp project whilst it is on a network unless you want all sorts of problems like this to occur. By all means backup to a network but that's it.
If the problem still persists, try closing the project and deleting the <projectname>.cpd file in Windows Explorer (where <projectname> is the name of the project). When you reopen the project, this file is rebuilt.

Disk utility crashes every time I try to run it. Help!
My Macbook (late 2008 aluminum unibody running Snow Leopard 10.6.8) is having a plethora of problems - Spotlight won't return any results, I can't get any .dmg files to mount, and software updates can't be installed. Many of the solutions I've found involve running Disk Utility, but every time I try to open it, it crashes. Here's the log file I get:

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/. -
Reformatting External Hard drive: Disk Utility crashes near the end
I recently updated to Leopard and emptied off my external hard drive and then wanted to (zero out data &) reformat it and start fresh so as to use it with the new Time Machine feature.
However, near the end of reformatting it with Disk Utility the progress just stopped and after giving it some time I did a force quit and sure enough it came to light that it had crashed. Since then I've tried again several times to the same result. I even tried doing it of the Disk Utility on the install CD and it crashed with one minute left!!
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated!Use a more powerful utility such as DiskWarrior, or a product such as those listed here.

After getting the dreaded gray/blue screen, I tried to run disk repair on the internal disk. I got an error message saying "Disk Utility can't repair this disk and restore your backed-up files. The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely." What do I do now? This is an iMac and I'm running 10.6.8.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it. See below for how to clone a drive.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
You may be able to backup your data if you have an erased external drive you can use. Before you do the above but after you have opened Disk Utility you can try to clone your drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Now this will only work if the drive is accessible and can be cloned by Disk Utility. Otherwise, you would need to access your drive from another Mac that you can connect via Firewire - Target Disk Mode.
