Disk Utility Accident & Weird Symbol In Owner Name In Get Info

Recently, I was trying to troubleshoot some error messages I was getting with Carbon Copy Cloner, the source of which revolved around a mysterious file in my Shared folder. This file wouldn't delete no matter what I tried, so while searching for answers I heard that repairing permissions might help. Well, I forgot to read the message at the top of Disk Utility when I opened it. You know, the one that tells you that Disk Utility cannot repair permissions on a disk with open files or an on your current startup disk. Well, I ran disk utility without booting from the OS X install disk first. That probably explains why it made a bunch of changes to permissions.
Well, as I was about to close Disk Utility, I realized what I'd done, and I figured that it was no big deal. All I had to do was boot from the install disk and then run Disk Utility again, and it would repair the permissions the correct way. At least, that's what I thought. Then, when I did so, Disk Utility didn't make near as many changes as it did the first time. And, because I didn't realize until too late that I might need the output from the first time I ran Disk Utility in case something went wrong (i.e. I needed to undo any of the changes it made) I didn't even try to save it, if that is even possible.
Of course, this all didn't seem so bad. I thought that maybe the reason Disk Utility didn't make so many changes the second time was because some of the changes it made the first time really did need to be made, and thus that's why they weren't undone when I ran it again. However, I knew some thing was wrong when I tried to get info on a random file on my desktop just to verify that the owner was correct and everything. As soon as I either clicked or hovered over get info, I got the little rainbow spinning wheel for a second or two, which never happened before. Then, when I clicked the Ownership and Permissions triangle in the Get Info panel, I noticed something amiss. In the slot where the file's owner was supposed to be displayed, which should read "myusername(me)" the slot instead displayed some east asian character where my username should have been. So far, that, and a longer delay for the Get Info panel's appearance are my only symptoms, but I'm worried there may be further reaching repercussions to my system that I haven't discovered yet.
So, I guess what I'm asking is, based on my symptoms, can someone figure out what they think is wrong, and then possibly help me fix it. I don't know technical terms, but is it a corruption in the file that holds all the names of the users on my system? Is there a cache or preference file somewhere I can trash or edit to fix this. Or can I run fsck to fix this? Or, if it is a corrupted file like that I may have copy of it. I didn't mention it above, but Carbon Copy Cloner did manage to clone pretty much all of the folders on my hard drive in alphabetical order on an external firewire drive except for a few of the last few hidden folders and my Users folder.
Anyway, thanks in advance to everyone who takes the time to read this post.

Hi ailurous,
I run repair permissions all the time without first booting from the install disk. It works fine. On the other hand, attempting to Repair Disk without booting from the install disk will not work.
I'm thinking something other than faulty permissions is causing your problems..
That being said, I'd suggest booting off your install disk, running Disk Utility, and selecting First Aid>Repair Disk.
If it says that it couldn't repair the disk, just keep running it until it gives you the Disk Successfully Repaired message.
Let us know if this helps or if you get some error messages.

For 10.7, hold down Command R at Startup and you get recovery Mode Utilities.
Choose Disk Utility. Select your Hard drive. Check the SMART Status for "Verified. Select the Boot Volume, by default it is "Macintosh HD".Run REPAIR disk. If it completes without incident, run Repair Permissions as well.
You can also hold down Option at Startup, and Choose Recovery HD as the boot device. It gets you to the same place in Utilities.

  • Weird symbol in file name and images by pixel instead of size?

i my filenames i sometimes see a weird box with what looks like a script "x". is this some kind of default symbol that indicates i am using a non standard symbol in this file name? it sometimes happens after i drag and drop something say from my desktop to my laptop.
also, is there any chance of being able to see pixel size of images in a Finder window in addition to or instead of File size?
    Thanks.

    Some things about this.
    1. Ignore the back slash in front of the space.  That's the terminal shell convention for escaping (making significant) special characters that follow the back slash (in this case a space).
    2. A pathname like ~/foo/bar is another shell convention where the tilde is a shorthand for your home directory.
    3. I am not convinced that the weird stuff is not there in the Finder display.  I think it just doesn't show in the Finder's desktop font.
    4. I am going to use your example for the following discussion.  Extrapolate where needed.
The terminal shows a pathname like /Users/homename/Desktop/_evolute\ tutes, i.e. with some kind of garbage character(s) after tutes.
In terminal type cp followed by a space and drag that tutes file into the terminal window.  I think it will look something like this (don't hit return yet).
    cp /Users/homename/Desktop/_evolute\ tutes
Now type a space and add ~/Desktop/foobar on to the end of the line.  It should now look like the following:
    cp /Users/homename/Desktop/_evolute\ tutes  ~/Desktop/foobar
Hit return.  You should see a file called foobar on your desktop (unless you get an error because the shell didn't like those special characters at the end of the pathname, in which case we have to quote it, but ignore that for now and we can address that in a followup post).  All this did was copy your file to the desktop with a different name, foobar in this case.
Now I propose that the file foobar is named just that.  If you throw that in the trash, do a get info on it, or drag it back into the terminal window, it should still be just the name foobar.  Nothing else at the end of it.
If all this goes as I described, then the moral of all this is that however that original problematic file (or files) was created somehow something added those non-printable characters to the end of the name.  In some fonts it shows as best the font being used can show it.  In others they remain invisible because there is no representation in that particular font.
...on the other hand, I could just be wrong about all of this!

  • Disk Utility - Accidently Removed Partition

    Hi,
I had booted into a copy of leopard on an external disk.
Whilst in disk utility, I was trying to create a new partition (on my Macbook's hard disk). I subsequently accidently deleted the partition/volume on my laptops' hard drive.
Can anyone recommend any recovery options?
    Thank You

Data recovery should be easy and straight forward because I didn't format/erase it and none of the data is corrupt.
yes, you did - you deleted the partition.
Just to confirm there is no way to just rebuild some sort of file which lets the system now that there is an intact partition there?
no, there isn't. but as you say the data recovery in your case should work well and it should recover everything because you didn't overwrite the dat with anything new.

  • Partitioning drivs using Disk Utility acts weird

Ok, i originally had 3 partitions, the original, a 1GB one for School Work, and a 4.5GB one for Parallels desktop things (So if windows get a virus it don't break my mac).
I Later realized that parallels Desktop had made there own boot disks which where not in the partition, they where big so i moved everything on the partition to my desktop and deleted the partition. I then when to make a 17.5GB partition (I have 40Gb of free space) and it did it for a white then told me it failed. Ive tried it several times, and whats even more odd, is that in Disk Utility t says my Macintosh HDD is 231gb but on my desktop it says its 226Gb.
Im not sure whats going on so could somebody please help?

  • Disk Utility Verify Weirdness

My wireless mighty mouse started acting erratic again today. The Bluetooth 2.0 update from a few weeks back seemed to fix this problem for a good 10 days or so but unfortunately, the erratic mouse problem is back. So I ran some tests on my hard drive. I ran TechTool Deluxe 3.1.2 from my extended AppleCare package. I tested the drive hardware, did a format check and directory scan, surface scan and tested the processor and RAM. No problems were found.
I restarted after this and then ran Disk Utility and repaired permissions. Then I did a "Verify Disk" with Disk Utility and the progress bar (barber shop pole) stopped spinning part way in (it almost looked like it was locked up) and I got a spinning beach ball and couldn't click anywhere on the desktop. The verify disk procedure eventually completed and no problems were found. So out of curiosity, I tried this again and the exact same thing happened. So I did a Safe Boot and ran Disk Utility once more, then restarted again and now Disk Utility seems to work normally again.
I also tried a free utility today called SMARTReporter 2.3.9 and I wasn't too impressed with it (no comparison to Smart Utility 2.0.2). SMARTReporter claims to be compatible with 10.5.
So I wonder what happened and why Disk Utility locked up on me? Is TechTool Deluxe 3.1.2 at fault here? I wonder if it is even compatible with Mac OS X 10.5.7 since it hasn't been updated in about a year and a half now (since 02/08/08) - what's up with Micromat? Or perhaps SMARTReporter 2.3.9 isn't so smart after all? I tried running Disk Utility on our PowerBook G4 running Mac OS X 10.4.11 and I noticed that the barber shop pole also stops spinning part way through a verification so maybe I just haven't noticed this close enough before?
Any ideas, advice or help would be appreciated - things seem to be okay now but I'm a bit worried about my hard drive.
    Thanks,
    Gerard

Thanks for letting me know everything is A-OK with the boot device issue. I think the startup disk was deselected because I reset the PRAM. Regarding the erratic mouse, I still have this problem and it is driving me insane - I've got a replacement coming from Apple. It must be defective. I keep seeing these errors in the system log:
    Jun 21 11:55:53 <my computer> kernel[0]: IOHIDSystem: Seize of IOHIDPointing failed.
    Jun 21 11:55:53 <my computer> kernel[0]: IOHIDSystem: Seize of IOHIDEventDriver failed.
And this error started only after updating to 10.5.7 from 10.5.6:
    Jun 21 11:59:32 <my computer> kernel[0]: IOHIDSystem::relativePointerEventGated: Capping VBL time to 20000000 (was 34304537)
My whole system just feels generally "flaky" right now. I'm assuming these are related to the mouse. I've been getting them for months. What is the best way to test your system - with Disk Utility or is there a special TechTool Deluxe test I should run (surface scan, directory scan, volume structure, etc.)?
    Thanks again,
    Gerard

  • After I repair permissions via Disk Utility, my HP1012 doesn't work. I get a message that permissions have to be repaired and do I want to do so. Yes, then it works again.

    Annoying, but not serious

I'm not sure of the value of this, but it won't take long to try and might help. Have you tried repairing disk permissions whilst booted from the Recovery HD rather than whilst you are normally booted.
Restart holding down Command + r and from the screen with four choices select Disk Utility. Choose it and repair disk permissions. Restart as normal from the Apple menu and test.
If that doesn't help, try once again resetting the printing system, but before adding the printer back in go to Macintosh HD>Library>Printers and move the HP folder to the desktop. Log out and back in again (or restart) and try to set up the printer afresh. Hopefully this will initiate a fresh install of the software. If this solves it you can trash the HP folder on your desktop.

  • Disk Utility (10.5.6) error: File name too long

Hello, here is one for you all...
I am in the midst of creating a new "build image" so I can start deploying Leopard.
Before I upgraded the build to 10.5.6 I was able to create a disk image of this build machine.
After updating it to 10.5.6 and all of the current Apple updates I am no long able to create a disk image.
I keep getting an error several minutes into the imaging process that says +"*File name too long".*+
I've run permission repair on the disk and Disk Warrior with still no luck. I've also used different machines and a boot FireWire drive to make he image and still have had no luck. I can use CCC to clone my Master build to another machine but I need to be able to make an image of it.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Bear in mind that in Unix, a file name includes the path, so if you have a very deep file or perhaps some kind of infinite recursive link, that might cause the problem, since that would make the file name very long indeed.
This may not be the problem you are having, but it just came to my mind when I read your post

  • Changing Artist/Genre/Song Name in "Get Info"

I am very maticulous about my music organization, and only maybe half the time am I able to change the Genre/Song Name/Or Artist
    anyone else have this problem?
how do I fix it ?

If iTunes won't accept changes to the tags see Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows.
If iTunes appears to accept your changes but the original values reappear later then the files are likely to be mp3s with multiple tags. In such cases iTunes only updates one of them and may later read back the unchanged data from the other. To fix this select the tracks in question in iTunes, right-click and use Convert > ID3 Tags > None, several times, then use Convert > ID3 Tags > ID3v2.3. You will need to reinsert any embedded artwork.

Hi, we found a nano and wanted to find out if there is any way to trace the owner by the serial number so we can return it.

Contact Apple 1-800-MY-APPLE. If the Nano is registered they might have you send it to them for onward delivery. Also try the local police station to see if one has been reported lost.

Every time I add a few songs to iTunes i shows up as track "and then the number" is there any way in finder to change this permanently? I know that it is blocked under "get info" and then "more info" tab. I know that you can change this in itunes but if u delete your librabry and re-ad the song its gonna show up as a track "and then the number" again.

  • Disk Utility Shows "Owners Enabled: No" Even When it *Is* Enabled

I have an external AoE (Coraid) disk array that I have mounted to an XServe machine using OS X 10.6.8 Server.  I was having frustrating problems with file ownerships going away, until I figured out that it was due to ownership being disabled on this drive, which is the default for external drives.
So, I used Finder | Get Info and unchecked the "Ignore ownership on this volume" checkbox.  That seems to have fixed the problem, and ownership is now preserved on this volume.  I checked with diskutil as well, as it also confirms that ownership is enabled.
However, even after rebooting the machine, Disk Utility (the GUI) still says, "Owners Enabled: No" for this volume.  Absolutely nothing I can think to do will make Disk Utilty stop claiming that ownership is not enabled.  I even used diskutil to disable and then re-enable ownership.  Everything *seems* to be working, but this is still a concern.  Is it a bug in Disk Utility?
The volume's filesystem, btw, is Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, journaled).

Well, the volinfo.database is fine. You might check the system.log and the asl.log for any entries about diskarbitrationd but I have a feeling you won't find anything. You could double post over in the Server forum or over at MacOSXHints- has a bunch of server admins who visit there frequently.

  • IMac OSX 21.5 late 2010, had MTN Lion on it. Prob with thousands of my photos in IPhoto all mixed up and intermingled with thousands of odd images I had not seen before. After trying to erase them, too numerous, I used original disk for disk utility. Disk

Utility had issues with erasing disk. It took 36 hours and then said it was a failure. I tried repairing and verifying and partitioning. Finally, I used the original disk to install the system. It installed Snow Leopard. I was unable to install the 2nd disk ILife items, so I repurchased those. I thought I was all set but it would not upgrade past 10.6 or something. After it is all set up, I realize there is nothing on the computer. The updates were in download folders and in reading the install logs, it said the install disc was read only and the system was installed from somewhere else and then it was reaped and something about a sandbox and it seemed important that all the Asian languages were added in, even though I unchecked that option. All these odd programs and windows are on there, which I do not use and do not want on there and do not see it on there. So, I tried this several more times, it appears someone is using the Root user. I tried to disable the root user as I do not understand how to set it. Last night, I took the main partition that I put everything on and made me the owner and took over that whole disk. Then the other two were locked, do I ejected them. Then I wanted to erase 4 things - an iDisk an some other trash and the trash is suddenly emptying 989 items, I think were the logs. So, I turned it off. What is going on? I was unable to fix the install disk. The permissions were not repairable on the partition, it was verified as being ok though. Has someone taken over my computer? How can I get rid of them and get it fixed? It has affected my iPad and my iPhone 5. I really need these devices. I am an artist and need to take and post photos of my work. Is this Chinese people doing this and are they nearby?  I did notice they wanted me to sign up for mo ole me. in the logs  it even said, no [email protected]. And no password access at that address.  So, I was also not able to update to Mountain Lion and Icloud again. at one point it looked like I had. i downloaded everything I purchased that was in Icloud to Itunes and it showed the lion in Mail but there was no cloud icon and Mountain Lion said to install, meaning it was not installed. System information confirmed this. oh, and my main disk in disk Utility is named with an unchangeable name that is the serial number of the mac and it says it is an in/out sata media drive. Please, please help me.

    1. If you break your post into paragraphs it is much easier to read.
    2. I have no idea what your post is referring to, and how - if at all - it relates to iPhoto.
    3. It's a good idea to re-read what you've posted, and ask yourself how it might look to someone who doesn't know you and doesn't know what's going on with your machine.
