Disk Utility and fsck report 'missing thread records' and can't repair.

Hello,
What first made me realise there was a problem with my iMac was that when I tried to update a application it failed. I then manually download the .dmg of the update and tried replaced the app (Transmission 1.82 being that app in question). This failed, OS X claiming that it could not replace the older version (1.81). I then tried copying the file to the desktop where OS X claimed that there was already a copy of the application and so left a corrupted file on my desktop. This also happened when i attempted to move and copy a couple of pages documents and movie files around. I decided the best thing to do at this point was to reboot my computer; OS X decided it needed to install a couple of security updates at this point. This installation failed.
My iMac booted up, but only after a progress bar has appeared under the Apple logo and spinner and has done its thing (From what I've read this means that OS X is trying its best to resolve some sort of errors). This happens upon every boot.
This made me think that something must be going on with the file system of my Mac so I ran all the tests in Disk Utility. Permissions repair ran fine and fixed a few issues, but when I verified the disk this is what it reported:
"Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Performing live verification.
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking extents overflow file.
Checking catalog file.
Missing thread record (id = 2045563)
Missing thread record (id = 2096282)
Keys out of order
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."
I booted up from the DVD and tried to repair; this failed. Next I tried using fsck in single user mode; this also failed. Upon rebooting again and waiting for the progress bar to fill I was able to move files around and update Transmission without issue. Disk Utility still reports the same error.
If I boot into Windows Vista everything works perfectly; as of yet I haven't got around to installing the new Boot Camp update for Windows 7 support incase that changes anything. When running the diagnostic tool on the Windows Vista DVD it reports that everything is fine for Windows.
I really am at a loss for what to do next. All my data is backed up by Time Machine onto a Time Capsule as well as manually onto a FW external. I also made a clone of the Windows partition using the free app Winclone. Does anyone know anything I can do to fix this problem?
Thanks so much,
Sam.

I have been experiencing exactly the same problem here with my MacPro. Apple replaced the hard disk because it was reporting bad sectors. However even with the replacement hard disk I'm experiencing the "missing thread" issue again. I'm guessing its either a software issue that keeps recurring or a fundamental hardware issue. Is the disk controller part of the hard disk or the motherboard? I've never had hard disk problems like this before.
Here's my Disk Utility report from earlier today:

I do not have Disk Warrior nor the Apple disks with me. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. Navigating my disk in single user mode seems to have all my directories etc.
    Thanks!

I am trying to back up my data now. I only have my FAT32 formated iPod with me and I'm trying to mount it to backup my photos before I reinstall. Unfortunately I do not see my iPod popping up in /dev at all so I cannot even mount it.
It's a USB connection so I suspect that single user mode doesn't pick it up... Any advice on how to mount a filesystem from my iPod in single user mode is much appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • What is a missing thread record (id = 3339624) and what can I do about it?

I was trying to updat my IMac to snow leopard and got an error during the process. I restarted my computer on the HD that I was trying to update and I get the boot screen and then it turns off. I then got it to boot on the SL disk and it got me to the repair prompt and the DU. When I verify the HD I get missing thread record (id = 3339624) and It grays out the HD. After restarting and getting back to the DU I can see it again and all my files on it. I no longer care about updating I just want to be back to normal. I don't have any time machean backups and I am very worried. It makes it even worse being able to see my files but not be able to get to them.

That error message means that Disk Utility can't reconcile the catalog entry for a file and it's location on the hard drive. That could mean a problem with the file or a problem with the catalog.
Verifying the hard drive doesn't fix anything, it just reports it's status. You need to boot to either your Leopard or Snow Leopard DVD, bring up Disk Utility, and repair the hard drive. If Disk Utility gives a failure on exit message or tells you it can't repair the hard drive, then you'll need to use a program like Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro, with Disk Warrior being the program most people use. That should be able to fix the problem. Disk Warrior is available from http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
If you started a major operating system upgrade without having a backup, you're setting yourself up for failure should a problem arise, but you probably know that by now.

  • Time machine restore: missing thread record

    Hello everyone,
I recently upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. I did a clean install. I have been backing up with Time Machine to my Lacie Cloudbox NAS. My NAS requires authentication.
I am unable to restore my files. I have tried it during installation and with Migration Assistant. I can see my .sparsebundle through Finder and mount it (and see an inprogress with loads of folders inside of it). I am unable to copy the files directly to my desktop because of an permission warning.
From Windows I can see loads of files inside the bands-folder. They are all equal in size. I found a clue that maybe the most recent ones are corrupt, so I moved two days worth of them out from sparsebundle.
Disk utility says the drive needs to be repaired. I tried this, and got loads of errors. I there are so many of these that I have shortened the list below a lot. Please help me, all my valuable files are inside the .sparsebundle (510 gigs). I don't care about automation, I just want them out.

i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities (from hard drive), turned out I needed to repair disk from a installation disk. Did that, I got the volume (Hard drive) repaired from the installation disk disk. To this point, great!
When I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair. I went thru two rounds of this.....
    Can anyone help? thanks

Sorry guys, I don't see how to reply to you so I use reply to "me" basically.
So the error I get is "volume header needs minor repair" and then you need to perform repair from the installation disk message.
I did repair not verify from the disk twice. Every time ending in the "the volume had ha been successfully repaired". Then I reboot from the internal disk. Run disk utilities from it, do verify and get the same error message I got before repair. I hope this can shed some light fr you guys. Sorry I didn't include details in the original

I've tried to respond to your post, but I cannot understand what you are asking. Also not a good idea to post your personal information on a public forum. I've asked the moderator to edit the post.
Now, please explain what safety mode means, and we will try to help.

hi my charging socket is suddnly stop working and i am in india so how can i repair here ?? i called up in apple support center in banglore but they dont have any detail about it as well. so please help me to replair it.

There is a possibility that the square charger plug that goes into the wall plug has burnt out.  That happened to me on a recent trip.  It went out with a "pop" and after that, it was dead and would not charge anything.  These chargers are sold in several electronic stores.
Now I always travel with a spare square cube wall charger.  They are very cheap on eBay ( a couple of dollars or so).  In an electronics store they might cost as much as $20.
I would certainly try this first.

  • Disk Utility won't allow Master Boot Record?

    Hello all -
I just purchased a WD MyBook 3TB hard drive for storing our movies on.  We had our previous external hard drive (250GB) plugged into our Sony Blu-Ray player and it worked smoothly.  But now, I plug in our new hard drive, and the blu-ray player doesn't recognize it.
I tried re-formatting the hard drive as FAT32 (same as the old hard drive), but that didn't work.
The only noticeable thing I see is that the partition map scheme of the WD hard drive is "GUID Partition Table", and the old hard drive's map scheme is "Master Boot Record".  I went into Options in the Partition page of Disk Utility to try to change the WD hard drive to Master Boot Record... but it won't let me.  It's greyed out.  It's there as an option, but apparently not for my hard drive.
What gives?  How do I get around this?  Thanks in advance for your help!

hi, if you already have the disks RAIDed from OSX then you can't re-RAID them in Windows. The only thing you can do is set it to a RAID, volume scheme and file system that both OSes are able to detect.
Otherwise yes, if you haven't already set a RAID mode on another OS then the disks can do RAID 0 and 1 in Windows.

    Hi,
I have a grey screen and grey rotating wheel startup probs. I have tried repairing with the disk utility, resetting PRAM, booting in safe mode (which gave a subset of the errors that 'disk repair' did- namely- 'invalid sibling link, invalid record count, invalid node structure, invalid key length)  and finally trying to get to archive&install the o/s, but it cannot find the destination volume. Is an erase the only option? PS I have backed up most files individually, but my daughter did not back up any from her user account. Any help would be appreciated. J

Anyways, i've made it work. My process was this:
    Problem:
    1. I put MacPro into Target Disk Mode to mount to my 2011 MacBook Pro. Disk Utility on MBP would only see 800GB.
    Solution:
    2. Booted the SL CD on the MacPro and ran Disk Utility from there. In the partitions tab, I chose 1 partition, and hit apply.
    3. "could not unmount disk."
    4. So I tried to partition it again, and it worked this time. 3TB Available.
    5. I then booted the MacPro using an external HD with OSX on it to run CarbonCopyCloner to reimage my backup.
I hope this helps anyone else with the same problem.

  • HD in Disk Utility is Not Right - Missing RAID Tab

I have totally messed up my HD, and now looking in Disk Utility I don't see the tabs that are normally associated -
When I click on Volume - First Aid and Partition are the only tabs available. No Erase, RAID, or Restore tabs. (picture attached)
When I click on Partition - First Aid, Erase, and Restore are the only tabs available. No RAID tab. (picture attached).
What are the impacts to not having these tabs, especially the RAID tab? How do I get them back? I am sure that this happened when I did an erase and reinstall...obviously not correctly.
Macbook Air -mid 2012. Came with ML, installed Mavericks, installed Yosemite. Long story short, since Aug I have erase and reinstall 3 times. This week I found that I was missing emails in Mac Mail App, and through researching where my lost emails were, I stumbled upon the missing tabs in Disk Utility. for my HD
As for the missing emails, my TM backups have not included a user/library folder since 8/16. This is about the time I did the very first erase reinstall. Last night I restored from TM backup and selected the 8/16 date to use, as my only option in getting those emails back. Of course, the emails missing between 8/16 and yesterday are gone forever. Since I restored using 8/16 I am now back on Mavericks. The restore did not bring these tabs back in Disk Utility for my HD.  I won't upgrade to Yosemite again until I can resolve this Disk Utility HD problem.

I've heard that this has something to do with Yosemite. Once you upgrade to Yosemite, it changes disk utility and removes those tabs. From my research, some developers that were part of Yosemite testing saw this during the version tests before public release, and they feel it is a Yosemite bug, not sure why Apple would choose to change this, but maybe they have a product or feature coming in the future that may need a set up like this. It doesn't happen to all computers, just some, and think its directly related to the solid state HD.
I've seen in other posts a Terminal code that some said helped, but I am not sure I want to try that. What if Apple does something in an update somewhere that fixes or changes this as is, and I did the Terminal code now that then further messes things up if/when an update fix comes along.
I don't need to partition my HD, at the moment, so not highly impacted by this. Other than this, the computer is working fine. Its just strange that its now missing.

  • I tried creating a startup backup via Disk Utility.  There wasn't enough space and now I have no internal disk space. How do I fix this?

I used DIsk Utility to create a startup backup clone for the first time yesterday.  I cloned it to my internal drive on my Mac.  I let it run all night and when I woke up this morning it showed it as failed (not enough disk space).  Now when I boot up my Mac, it showed a warning at the login screen (not enough disk space at startup).  I do not have an external hard drive (which is why I chose to backup internally).  Do I need to purchase one?
It still allows me to log in.  When I open Finder and look at my internal drive, it shows less than 100.00 MB space available.  I tried deleting a bunch of old files and stripped needless apps.  However, it keeps showing my computer as having less than 100 MB of storage.
Is there a way to find the failed clone backup and delete it?  I tried looking in Spotlight for the backup clone (I named it 4-21-14.dmg).  I cannot find the file.  I was hoping to backup my files so I can install OS Mavericks on my computer (mid-2010 Macbook Pro), but I do not have enough free space.

I solved the problem by deleting over 100 gb of files and apps.  I would have rather not gone that route, but having less than 100 MB of storage is an unacceptable headache to deal with.  Now I have to decide on whether to try again with the backup internally route or risk it and download/install Mavericks.
