Disk Utility "Backup Failure"

Hi all -
I have a 500GB iMac running 10.6.8.  I am trying to save a bootable backup on my new WD MyBook Desktop 1TB hard drive using Disk Utility (11.5.2).  I have formatted the WD with 2 volumes, one of which (named "Boot2") is to be my bootable backup.  But when I try to duplicate my "Macintosh HD" volume into Boot2 using Disk Utility's "Restore" function, I get an error message stating "Restore Failed - Operation not permitted" (or words to that effect).
I did the following:
1 - Formatted the WD drive into 2 500GB volumes using Disk Utility with Mac OS Extended (journaled) format.
2 - Selected "Macintosh HD" volume in DU's left hand column, and clicked the "Restore" buttton up top.
3 - Draged "Macintosh HD" (the volume) into the Source window, and draged "Boot2" (my WD backup volume) into the Destination window.
4 - Clicked the "Restore" button in DU's lower right corner.
At first, the operation seemed to be going normally.  But after copying "Appleworks 6 Updater Log", the "Applications" folder (with all the apps), and a "Backups.backupdb" folder, it stopped and gave me the error message.
Any thoughts as to what's going on?  What kind of operation would be 'not permitted'?  Did I do something wrong?  Or am I missing something?

Try it this way:
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
B. Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
  1. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
  2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
  3. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
       it to the Destination entry field.
  4. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
      the Source entry field.
  5. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external drive volume. Source means the internal startup drive.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Problems with Disk Utility backup & restore via DMG disk images

    I attempted to backup and restore a 2TB external raid storage device using the recommended Disk Utility procedure for 10.6.6. One of the HDDs in the raid enclosure had started to fail.
    First step was to create a new image from the 2TB device. I accepted the defaults of compressed image format and no encryption. The image took about 15 hours to create, and when complete, I was left with 2 files:

This failed immediately with the error "Restore failure. Could not find any scan information. The source images needs to be imagescanned before it can be restored".
    After researching this error I tried to correct it by selecting the DMG in Disk Utility and running Images => Scan Image for Restore. This failed immediately, complaining there was insufficient disk space. More research revealed it needed the same amount of spare space on the same disk to do an imagescan. So I had to free up an EXTRA 1.5TB of space in addition to the space the DMG consumed. Not very user friendly.
    The next attempt to imagescan the DMG got further than the "insufficient space" error. It displayed "Scanning image OWC2TB.dmg, Block Checksum Partition #1". This ran for about 10 hours. At the end, it displayed a new error message "Unable to scan OWC2TB.dmg (internal error)".
    Next I tried to mount the DMG and copy the files manually. My first attempt at this resulted in a "Verifying..." phase which looked like it will take about 10 hours, so I clicked "Skip". Soon after I got an error message "Unable to attach OWC2TB.dmg (no mountable file systems).". Now I am trying a mount with the Verify option...
    Can anyone suggest what I can try next to restore the DMG?
    I think the problem might be the fact the DMG is split in two parts, but the imagescan/restore software does not know how to read the second part? Is there a way to join these into a single DMG?

  • Disk Utility:  Backup to partition on external drive?

    Hi people. Would be glad of an answer and any comments on this.
    I have 3 Macs at home, a new G5 dual core and 2 G4 imacs, networked wirelessly. At this point I only backup my G5 to a second internal HD, by using Disk Utility's 'Restore' function.
    My preferred plan is to get an external Firewire 400 drive, make 3 partitions on it, and do the Disk Utility 'Restore' for the 3 respective Macs. That way it's not only a backup, but a bootable solution if one of the machines dies.
    My second choice is to add one of those generic network hard drives to the router and try to back up to that(essentially as an FTP/Samba disk), but it would be slow and not bootable at all.
    Question: Will disk utility allow a partition, either on a firewire drive or network drive, to be the destination for a 'restore'? Or will it only recognise whole volumes?

    Using the Restore function for backup is quite time-consuming as it has to backup everything every time you perform a backup. You will get much faster results by using a proper Backup and Recovery solution that supports incremental backups, i.e. backing up just the changes from the source to the destination (backup) so that the two are synchronized. For advice on the backup and recovery solution I employ, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ.
    People have had mixed results using NAS (Network-attached Storage) for backups. I frankly think that it's still a bit early to try that route. Using an external FireWire drive has always given be good results.

  • Disk Utility backup not working under Cmd R mode

    I upgraded my OS to 10.8.2. After doing so, when I do my normal system backup with Disk Utility, the system goes into sleep mode and the backup stops. I've done this many times in the past so I am not new to this.  I've read a few articles/posts with people having the same issue.  Why is apple not fixing this important bug?  I can't backup my system.  I have "verified disk" and it has no errors so that's not the issue.  The backup image starts to backup to my usb external drive then the screen dims and the system goes to sleep after about 5% and the flash drive stops flashing so it's not longer backing up.  When I press escape or any key, it resumes the backup but this takes hours.  I can't sit in front of the computer to keep moving my mouse.  HELP!!!
    I use Disk Utility 13.  I reboot and press Command R and then use the Disk Utility from there.

    You need automatic, frequent backups that don't require you to shut down the system, and that preserve some history. Using Disk Utility in Recovery is good for backing up a system that won't boot, or when preparing to erase and restore a volume, but what happens if you delete a file and then decide a week or a month later that you needed it?

  • Disk Utility: Restore Failure-Source image needs to be scanned for restore.

    Hello guys,
    I have a .dmg (source image) that I have created from a DVD by myself (read-only format).
    I am trying to restore it to a destination and a Restore Failure notification pops-up as follow:
    "Restore Failure
    Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore"
    I am quite new to Mac. Half of the time, I don't really know what I am doing - but just relying on the 'Help Menu', some research for guides on the internet and most of all read-on most of the posting here in the Apple Forum for what I want to do or might have encountered. Lastly to hopefully also speak the Mac language. For example - What's a disk image? What a .dmg? What's a source image? and etc. ~Lost~
    So for this case, I am totally lost as I can't seems to understand what does the Restore Failure notification mean at all as I quote above. What does it mean by the Source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore? What do I do from there? How do I scanned my source image? Is there a steps that I miss out while creating .dmg from the DVD?
    Could not find any scan information? What scan information? Where do I go to asked for scan information?
    I am so lost that I don't even know the right question to ask or begin with.
    I know what I want to do and believe it can be done with Mac. But I just doesn't seems to understand the concept of how it really works yet but to just follow blindly throughout the guides.
    So please help me if possible.

    Hi,
    If you open Disk Utility, select the Image in the disk util sidebar, and click on Images > Scan for restore... in the menu bar, it will take care of it for you. After that you can perform a restore as you were trying to do.
    They do this so that disk util can verify your data after the restore to make sure it copied exactly.

  • Disk utility repair failure

    Hello
    I have a 1.8Ghz - G5- with OSX10.3.9, and it is sometimes slow when using Iphoto on an external drive, and it sometimes wakes up right away by itself when i use the sleep function ( it will usually go to sleep on the second try when that happens)
    I have dissconnected all the peripherals, and I tried to run disk verification , and disc repair. Both stop at 1/3 of the way and i get the message " disk utility has lost its connection with disk management tool and cannot continue"
    any suggestion on how to proceed will be appreciated. I can use the computer and it has no symptoms other than being sometimes slow and sometimes needing two try before going to sleep.
    The hard drive is about four years old. But, I have a second internal HD which could be used to install a copy of OSX10.3.9

    I'm resurrecting this post, which I found after experiencing a similar Disk Utility failure while checking permissions. I followed eww's advice.
    In my case the log appeared to point to a problem with 'Flash Player.plugin' which I removed and could then complete repair of permissions from some recent installations.
    Replacing the file led to a repeat of the problem when re-running Disk Utility to see what happened.
    Am I to assume I need to remove the file every time I check permissions in future or is it worth trying a fresh download?

  • Disk Utility repair failure: You need to restart your computer. Hold down...

    While trying to backup my macbook pro (running 10.5.8 leopard). I kept getting the gray window that forced me to shut down my computer. After some research, I conluded that I needed to check my HDD for damage. I ran the Verify Disk option (Repair Disk option was not yet "clickable"), and it says
    First Aid Failed
    stopped verifying HD because the following error occured:
    Filesystem verify or repair failed.
    In the text box below that, it says
    "(It should be 771886 instead of 771889)
    Invalid volume directory count
    (It should be 148275 instead of 148272)
    The volume Macintosh HD needes to be repaired.
    ERROR: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
    I then tried the Repair Disk Permissions option and it came up with three difference
    Library/application support/proapps
    System/Library/privateframeworks/browserkit.framework
    System/Library/privateframeworks/prokit.framework
    (I can give more information on these three if that would help at al)
    In the Verify Disk error, it says that it needs to be repaired, but the repair disk option is still not clickable. I don't know what to do from here. Is there someone more tech savvy than I who can help?

    You cannot do rewpairs from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair:

  • HT1553 how do you keep imac from going to sleep during disk utility backup ?

    using the install DVD I am attempting to create a disk image backup with the Disk Utility app.  However the imac goes to slepp every 10 minutes. eventually causing an error.
    I found the commands to use on the commandline in terminal, However I can not use terminal and Disk Utility app at the same time from the install DVD.
    I am using moutian lion install usb drive.
    The Snow Leopard install DVD could not handle the 3 TB enternal harddive where the backup will be placed, before I do a clean install of Mountain Lion.

    this seems to be an issue in (mountain lion?) disk util - actually the second bug that I know of now.
    I am having the same issue whilst using zeroDIsk - however the system going to standy seems to slow the task down, it hasn't failed yet.

  • Disk Utility: Restore Failure

    I'm trying to restore my laptop from a dmg file. I have the laptop connected to another computer in target disk mode. When I try to restore, just after it starts copying I get this error:
    Restore Failure
    An error (2) occured while copying. (No such file or directory)
    I created the image with Carbon Copy Cloner and hdiuti to make it UDRO formatted. The computer I'm using to try and restore it is a G5 tower running Mac OS 10.4.7 and I'm using Disk Utility version 10.5.6. Does anyone know why I'm getting this error? Should I convert it to some other format? Are there other ways to restore the disk that might work, if Disk Utility refuses to?

    Sure you can... You mount the disk image on your Desktop. Run CCC. Select the disk image as Source Disk. Select the hard drive as Target Disk. Go (or Clone).
    (also, CCC does not make disk images; it clones)

  • Disk utility verify failure

    I had system 10.4.11 and I was installing system 10.5 because my mac wasn't starting up anymore, the wheel keep on spinning under the apple logo.
    Before installing the Os 10.5, i went to Disk Utility from Installation DVD to try to repair the startup disk, but it couldn't verify or repair it.
    Since then, i can install the new system only by initialize and install everything, i can no longer just update the old system.
    So, now i need to access my disk to backup my data.
    I tried to startup the Macbook pro in firewire target Target disk mode to backup my data, and the firewire logo appears on my macbook but the disk doensn't appear on the linked mac. If i have system 10.5 installation dvd on, it will appear on linked mac properly.
    The weird thing is that starting up in target mode without the dvd, a System 10.5 style firewire logo still appears, (with Leopard style battery indicator).
    Is there any other way i can access to my disk?

    You need to boot from the install DVD (or a clone of your internal) to run Repair Disk. Repair Disk will be grayed out, dimmed, because you can't repair from the same volume you are booted from.
    EDIT: No, you do not yet need to use Disk Warrior or Tech Tool or do any reformatting. These steps might become necessary only if Repair Disk fails.
    Unless you have very large video files, for example, there is no need to run any defragmenting utility. OS X does it all by itself on the fly.
    Try Disk Utility
    Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
        Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    Click the First Aid tab.
    Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    Select your Mac OS X volume.
    Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
    If you don't have the install DVD, try a Safe Boot. Hold the Shift key down at startup and give it much more time to boot than usual. It's trying to repair the drive directory.

  • Disk Utility Backup Question

    Hello, I have the latest Mac OS X updates on my Macbook Pro. My question is concerning Disk Utility. I am trying to backup my "home" folder or my entire hard drive as I am worried about losing files if my hard drive fails. I try to create a disk image of my "home" folder and about 10 to 15 percent of the way through, an error comes up saying that "(name of my home folder) cannot be copied" or something to that extent. I am fairly new to Macs, and I'm just wondering what this error is and how can I get around it and be able to back up all my information using Disk Utility, so that I can put it on my external hard drive.     If you are trying to make disk image of the hard drive, and creating the disk image on that same hard drive, then that could be your problem.
    You cannot really make an exact copy of something that is constantly changing.
    Since the act of creating the image is also modifying the source, you would end-up going in circles.
    You need to create your image on something else (a different drive).
    That may not work either if the drive is in use while you are trying to make your image.
    So, you could try booting from your original Restore Disk that came with your computer. Then, use the disk utility on that restore DVD to make your disk image.
    But, if you want to go the easy route, consider using a utility like Carbon Copy Cloner.

    This program can also be used to create a disk image version of your drive. That method would work like what you are trying to do now.
    But, it can also be used to create an exact clone of your main hard drive to an external or second hard drive.
    This would be a bootable backup that can be used to put your entire system back exactly as it was at the time of the backup.
    This means that if something happens, you can boot from your external drive, and resume normal work. Or, you can boot from the external drive and run the program again to restore your computer to match the backup.
    This backup is an exact clone of your entire installation, so it is readable by another machine.
    It works great, and I've never had a problem with it.
    If a full backup is not what you want, you can customize your backup to grab just what you want.
    But, I use the "Clone" feature.
    This has the advantage of being able to restore quickly, and return back to the exact point you were at when you backed-up.
    And, by being able to boot from the backup, you don't have to use another computer or re-install your OS before you can restore. Just boot from the backup and restore.
    I actually have my external hard drive partitioned into two sections.
    One partition is used just for holding my system backup. It is sized to be large enough to hold my entire OS X installation and everything I keep on my system.
    The other partition is the remaining portion of the drive. I use that one to hold large files that I use less frequently.
    This works great because I can just over-write my backup partition for each backup without worrying about my data files (since they are on a separate partition).
    And, it makes things much easier to manage.
    This backup is the most flexible backup method there is.
    You can use it to:
    * Boot if your original hard drive were to fail completely
    * Boot if your original hard drive's OS X installation were corrupted
    * Restore your entire system to the exact state of the system at the time of backup. This means no re-installing and then restoring. Just boot and copy the drive back to your main drive. Nice, fast, and you're done.
    * If you don't need to restore the entire drive, then just grab the files you need.
    * It's readable by any Mac OS computer. No special software required to access it's files.
    Another popular program is SuperDuper:

    Also, keep in mind that in order to have a bootable backup, you need a FireWire drive or a computer that supports booting from a USB drive (only the new Intel Macs support booting from USB).
    Naturally, if you do make a bootable backup copy, you'll want to make sure and test it before you count on it. So, you should boot the computer from the backup copy, and make sure that it all works as it should. That way you'll know it works when you need it.
    To boot from an external drive or partition, turn on your computer, and press and keep holding the "Option" key until the selection menu appears.
    A menu will appear, and in a few minutes you'll be able to choose the drive / partition you want to boot from and proceed from there.

  • Disk utility erase failure

    I purchased a new 5G iPod two days ago and encountered the same problem as addressed in this question. However, the posted fix for the iPodDriver.kext didn't work, so I attempted to erase my iPod in Disk Utility as someone had suggested. My iPod is now stuck repeating the startup screen, my Mac isn't recognizing it at all, and I can't seem to get it to turn off (or do anything for that matter...) I'm guessing this means that in my haste to fix things I erased something vital and now need to send it off to be repaired, right? Are there any possible fixes outside of sending it off, or at least a way to get it to shut off in the meantime?

    If you haven't fixed this yet, you may be able to use Disk Utility to completely erase and reformat the disk.
    Click the top line of the drive, then the Partition tab. Click +1 partition+ (or however many you want) under *Volume Scheme*, then Options at the bottom. Select GUID for an Intel Mac, +Apple Partition Map+ for a PPC Mac. Setup the partition(s) you want to use on the Mac as +OSX Extended (Journaled),+ then click Apply.

  • Disk Utility/fsck failure

    I have a macbook with OS Tiger on it at least 10.4 or newer. I tried to run Disk Utility from my OS disc, and my hard drive could not be verified. It also says that it's not mounted..? I tried to "Repair disk" on it, and it displays messages such as "Invalid node structure", "Invalid sibling link", etc. then an error message comes up that says it could not be repaired.
    I tried to accomplish this also by logging into single user mode and typing in
    /sbin/fsck -y
    I get the same kind of error messages.
    I've tried to log in in safe mode, but after sitting on the apple logo with the spinning gear for awhile, my macbook simply shuts off.
    I've also tried typing in "reboot" while in single user mode, but my computer just gets hung up on the blank blue screen with a mouse, which is it's original problem that I'm trying to fix.
    I've spent a lot of time searching through discussion boards on here and nothing seems to be working! Any help or advice would be MUCH appreciated. The closest Apple store to me is almost 3 hours away...

  • Disk utility permissions failure

    I keep reparing my permissions as my hard drive is suprisingly slow but one file is always "0" instead of "80" and it may exlpain it.
    "Groupe différent sur « Library/Preferences/com.apple.alf.plist » ; attendu 80, actuellement : 0."
    How coul i fix it ?

    It sounds as if you transferred the errors when you migrated your files from the G4. Something in that old filestructure that is not right. It might be the ownership of a single file somewhere.
    Have you considered DiskWarrior?

  • Please help.  Disk Utility Failure.

    I just ran my disk utility function and received this error:
    Disk Utility stopped verifying “Untitled 1” because the following error was encountered:
    Filesystem verify or repair failed.
    Does this mean that my hard drive is compromised? I've tried to run the first aid function several times and keep getting a failure message. Any and all help and input would be appreciated! Thanks!

    If you get the Disk Utility message "Failure on exit", or the one's you received, it means there is an issue that Disk Utility can't fix. In many cases, either Disk Warrior or TechTools Pro can be used to fix it, with Disk Warrior being the more popular program. However, if Disk Warrior/TechTool Pro can't fix it, then you may be looking at a new hard drive (although you can erase the hard drive and try with a restore to keep using it). Curiously, a new drive may be less expensive than the repair software.
