Disk Utility Burn Speed Option

Hello,
I'm trying to burn a bootable CD with my MacBook. When I go to choose the burn speed the only options I get are 8x and 24x. I have tried burning at 8x but when I go to use the disk, my machine tells me there are errors on the disk and it cannot proceed. I'm assuming I might have better success if I burn at a lower speed.
How can I get more burn speed options to appear in Disk Utility?

There must be a free disc burning utility tat you can download and try. Use that at 8x too and see what gives.
Also it may actually be the media.

I've been working on archiving a ton of video to DVD. I'm using Dual-Layer discs to minimize the amount of physical storage space needed for the finished project. I burned several discs in iDVD in July and regularly received errors. Then the drive suddenly stopped loading any type of media. Anything I inserted would spin briefly and then eject. Repaired permissions and followed steps outlined here and here. Took the Mac back to the store where I bought it (sadly, not an Apple Store - nearest one is 12 hrs away) where naturally it performed flawlessly for the store rep.
So I took it home and resumed burning, now saving as a disc image (ignoring iDVD's warning about the performance of DVDs burned this way) and using Disk Utility, since iDVD didn't seem to be reliable. Burned about 25 discs, error-free, in this fashion, then three days ago, got the error: "Unable to burn “Disc 19.img”. (The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.)"
Retried the same image, and it worked. Then burned two more in the same fashion with no errors. Today I got the same error again. Logs are identical for each failed burn, except for the time span between certain lines.
Price of DL media being what it is, I'd hate to keep ruining discs if there's something I can do to avoid it. I suppose it could be bad media, but it seems odd that I'd get two bum discs that close together after burning so many without issue. Checked the site and the forums, and there doesn't seem to be any answers. Does anyone have any ideas? (Other than "try a different brand of media." I've got a buttload of these discs and it's too late to return them now.) Even if it just helps determine where the issue lies. Warranty will be up soon, so if it's hardware related, I need to get it taken care of quick.

I have encountered the same problem. I have a Mac Book Pro from 2007, and it has gone through 3 DVD writers so far, all of which have ruined DVD+R DL disks. I have occasionally been able to burn one, but usually during verify, I get this error message:
Communication to the disk drive failed: 0x8002022
And disk utility fails with a "Invalid B-tree node size" error
Oddly, when I try to burn a disk near capacity (6.5Gb or more) it is more likely to fail than if I burn a smaller disk.
I've been using Memorex DVD+R DL disks, but I have used other brands in the past but they have failed, too. Out of about 50 disks so far, I have had success with about 5.

Will Disk Utility Burn a DL Disk Image to DVD?

Will Disk Utility burn a DL Disk Image created by iDVD to a DL DVD? I'd like to save myself the rendering time to find out that it won't, if that is the case.

The last I knew there could be a problem with setting the proper break point when creating/working from the disk image of a double layer disc, but I may have missed something recent.

IDVD - what brand of disk and burn speed?

I have an ibook and bought a Sony DVD burner. I have OS 10.3.9, and the Sony DVD burner said it was MAC compatible for OS 10.4 or later. So I got Patchburn and the DVD works. However, I've got a really crappy burn when i watch it on a DVD player. I read somewhere on here that it could be the make of the blank DVD, that Verbatim's are best (why?), and that it might be my recording speed...instead of 20x perhaps 1x would be better (I believe that's what I read). My questions are this: what are good DVDs to purchase for recording, and how do I control the burning speed for the Sony or is it within iDVD?

Verbatim discs are highly recommended around here; I also like Sony discs. Higher quality discs have fewer manufacturing errors, and the better dyes are more durable/compatible. Here's a discussion:

Slower burn speeds also mean fewer errors on the final disc. Most of the time it takes to "burn" a DVD is actually encoding the video files, so the extra time it takes to burn at 1x or 2x isn't that much different than 8x (that must be quite a burner at 20x DVDs).
To best control the burn speed, there are two options but both involve creating a disc image (in iDVD, Save a Disc Image). This virtual DVD can then be tested, and if it works well, you'll then copy the DVD onto your media. Burning the copy is accomplished with Roxio Toast or Apple's Disk Utility.

Disk Utility, burning CD-Rs, CD-RWs

It used to be (in 10.3.8 and earlier?) that you could burn a CD-R or CD-RW using Disk Utility. This was how it worked:
1. You created a disk image of the size you wanted.
2. You dragged the files you wanted into the image.
3. You clicked on the disk image in the sidebar in Disk Utility, and then clicked the Burn icon at top left.
4. A dialogue came up that allowed you to choose the burn speed and whether you wanted to make the resulting disk appendable (i.e. you could burn multiple sessions on the same disk).
This isn't working any more -- when I follow this procedure in 10.3.9 (work on a desktop G4) or 10.4.2 (home on a Mac Mini G4), I get a disk that will not mount.
Is it still possible to burn an appendable disk using Disk Utility? If so, how? And if not, why is the procedure I've described still possible?

Yes, you can still burn multisession cd-rs and cd-rws with disk utility. This is directly from the disk utility help menu:
In Disk Utility, create a disk image that contains the files you want to burn to the disc.
The files must be from a volume with a Mac OS Extended disk format. To check a volume's disk format, select the disk in Disk Utility and look at the information at the bottom of the Disk Utility window.
Select the disk image in the Disk Utility list and choose Images > Burn.
Select the "Leave disc appendable" checkbox. If you don't see this option, click the triangle in the top-right corner.
Insert a blank recordable disc in the optical drive, and click Burn.

Disk Utility burning issue - DVD icon not removed

Hi,
I just burned a bunch of disk images to DVD. After the first one was done burning, the DVD ejected automatically. But the image of the DVD on the desktop was not ejected. When I had inserted the a new DVD a second DVD icon appeard on the desktop. I tried naming this one the same title, but that was not allowed by Finder. So I clicked on the first DVD icon and command+e'd it. The new DVD and the DVD icon were ejected, but the new DVD's image stayed on the desktop. When I command+e'd the new DVD icon, the DVD drive made an ejecting noise and the icon disappeared.
Is this how this is supposed to work? I assume the burned DVD icons are supposed to eject when the DVD ejects initially.

Disk utility burning issue

I'm trying to burn some DVD/DVD DL from disk images.....
I never got a success with *disk utility*..
after burning one with *disk utility*, checking disk always fails: an error on a sector (never the same)
in the other side, burning same image with toast works fine....
this doesn't come from the disk because first I burned with disk utility and then with toast (disks come from same cake)

Can Disk Utility burn a Blu-ray ISO file?

This is a simple question to pose: assuming only the best of media and burner hardware (so that problems with those don't come into play), can Disk Utility reliably burn ISO images that represent a Blu-ray disk, complete with chapters and whatever else is contained on a Blu-ray disk?
Background
I'll be using Adobe Premiere to generate videos for burning to Blu-ray disk. There seems to be several ways for me to do that, and most of them seem to have problems:
1. From the completed Premiere project, I can jump into Adobe Encore and burn from there. But… many comments on the Adobe forum suggest that route may be problematic. No burn-speed control for instance. The Encore forum is full of people who don't use Encore's burning abilities, but instead use Toast or the PC equivalent.
2. Use Toast. I've just received a special offer form Other World Computing to buy Toast 11 Pro for $49. But… I've been put off buying Toast because of many poor reviews on Amazon. A handful of poor reviews I could ignore, but there are dozens.
3. Use Encore to generate an ISO image of my completed Blu-ray, then use Disk Utility to burn that ISO. But… there are websites in the internet jungle telling me I need to download their product to be able to burn Blu-ray ISO images on a Mac. On the other hand, there are reputable websites (here and here) that explain how to use Disk Utility to burn Blu-ray ISOs.
Basically, I'm confused. It seems to me that Encore > ISO > Disk Utility is the way to go, but I would like confirmation from Apple users that this route will work and is reliable. If not, maybe I should be buying Toast before the special runs out on 30 April.

On the last page of the first link, lifted from the California Institute of the Arts website, clear instructions are given for using Disk Utility to burn a Blu-ray ISO.
Right at the bottom of the second link, lifted from the Drexel University website, similar instructions are given for using Disk Utility to burn a Blu-ray ISO.
Are both instructions incorrect in their basic assumption? When their students go to video lab to burn a Blu-ray, do the students find it can't be done?
This is really confusing. Toast gets very poor reviews, yet I've never had a problem with Toast 9. Two tertiary education sites tell me how to burn a Blu-ray with Disk Utility, but I've just received two responses which tell me it can't be done. I'm intrigued.

Disk Utility - Burning DVD from desktop file created from camcorder

I am unable to burn a DVD from a file on my desktop. When trying to use the upper tray, the disk drive won't remain closed and I am unable to proceed.
When using the lower tray, it begins the burn process, then returns this message:
Unable to burn file. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.
The upper tray is a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4480B
The lower tray is a Sony DVD RW DRU-530A.

4GB file with Disk Utility should be fine.
4x speed should be fine too, but you may want to try 2x, just in case the ATA-33 bus is struggling. The ATA-33 bus is the original bus in the MDD for the optical drives, the hard disks were on an ATA-66 and ATA-100 bus. Unfortunately ATA-33 is very limited in the amount of data it can reliably send in a given time, and 4x DVD burning is the absolute limit.
Sony DVD-R should be fine, many here are wary of Memorex media, I use it for temporary copies of product / games discs, but never for backups.
How is the external DVD burner attached ? FireWire ?
It really should be working, you've already confirmed that both the drives successfully burn CDs, so we know they're recognised and operating. And you've said the 4GB camcorder file is on your desktop, ie. on the internal hard disk, so we know it's not a speed issue with the source file, like if it was on a flash drive - or is it ? Or is it still on the camcorder ? If so get it copied to the internal hard disk.
Can you confirm the ATA-33 bus and Disc Utility support for the drive by using Apple System Profiler, if you select ATA, it should appear on the ATA-3 bus. You'll also have an ATA-4 and ATA-6 bus.
If you click on "ATA-3 bus" you should find an entry "Disc Burning" and it should say "Apple Supported" or similar. If it doesn't then I don't think you can burn with Disk Utility. Generally, above OSX 10.4.6 (or 10.4.5, can't remember exact) all these drives are supported, for burning and booting from. I suspect you're fine as you've said you burn CDs with it fine.
One thing some people do is to buy an ATA-133 PCI card, and run the internal hard disks off that and the ATA-100 on the motherboard. Then use the motherboard ATA-66 slot to drive the optical drives. Don't spend any money yet, we'd have to confirm that the burn speed is the issue. Like said, try burning at 2x or 1x.
Apologies now if my Apple System Profiler instructions are not 100% accurate, my OSX 10.5.5 Mac is unavailable just now so I've based my instructions on OSX 10.3.9 ASP.

Disk Utility Verify/Repair options

When I Verify my HD in Disk Utility I get this error.
Why does it say this? Should I Repair the disk? Will I lose data? Any help thanks!

You will need to repair the HD per the instructions, this is critcal. Prior to doing this backup your computer, that should be your #1 priority!! To repair the HD, restart the computer, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option Key and select the Recovery Partition. Open Disk Utility, select your internal HD and run Repair Disk. If the disk has error run Repair Disk 2-3 times, if errors continue your have a damaged HD that needs to be replaced.

Disk Utility says "no options" when I try to partition

Hi,
I have a flat-screen IMac G4. I want to partition the hard drive. When I open disk utility and click on the drive I want to partition, I get the partition tab, but everything is grayed out and it says "no options." Can anyone tell me how to proceed to partition? I want to restore another, smaller hard drive on the IMac, hopefully without erasing everything. This would be sort of an archive of the hard drive that's already on the IMac. It's old stuff that is not currently in use.

No drives show in disk utility. holding option only shows internet recovery

Alright. I had windows 7 running in bootcamp on a 13 inch macbook pro 2011 june/july model and everything was running fine untill i closed the lid. When i closed the lid down after about 2-3 minutes the laptop restarted.. upon hearing this sound i opened the lid back up to find a white screen and after awhile a flashing folder like icon with a big question mark started flashing. So i rebooted thr laptop and held down option key. When the select network came up there were no drives listed above it.. after a minute or two internet recovery came up. So i ran this.it then went back to the select language for installing lion again. After navigating through the menus it came to select drive but the list was empty. When i checked disk utility ither it frozenor listed like two main cataagorys and two subs. I need some help. Anyone know whats wrong? Will update with more information needed. Note: i do not have the disks that came with the macbook pro i bought it used from a pawnshop around january. Has run perfect untill today

To do just a full backup you can use the Restore option of Disk Utility:
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
5. Select the backup volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Check the box to Erase Destination
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Will this method create a bootable backup on my firewire drive?

Yes, it will create a bootable backup.
If your Firewire drive has not been formatted (in other words it's a new drive) then I recommend the following procedure for prepping the drive the first time:
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
If you prep the drive before doing your backup, you can skip Step 6 of the backup instructions.

Disk Utility burning problems

I am trying to set up boot camp on my new macbook with an .iso file form my old dell running windows vista. when I try to burn the .iso in disk utility it says "unable to burn Factory.iso" (not recognised)

Disk Utility burn error with dmg file

I'm using a Pioneer DVR 106D to burn a dmg file on to a blank DVD. I've done it many times before with the disk utility.
But now I'm getting this message when I try to burn the dmg or make a new image off the old DVD master:
"Device drained its buffer without burn underrun protection"
Can anyone please tell me how I can fix this problem?
