Disk utility can't verify/repair partition map.

When trying to verify/repair my hdd it gives me the error: "Error: Couldn’t find the target disk for this operation."

You should already have a Recovery HD that was created when you installed Lion or came with the computer pre-installed. The Recovery Disk Assistant simply makes a Recovery HD you can use if one is missing from the hard drive.
However, repartitioning will destroy all the data on the drive so you will have to reinstall Lion. It will also remove the Recovery HD from the drive, so you will need to use your flash drive Recovery HD to boot the computer and get to the recovery main menu. The essential process:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
You will need to use the OPTION boot method to select your recovery flash drive as the boot volume.
Repartition the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Select one partition from the Partition Scheme dropdown menu. Click on the Options button and set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
When the destination drive is displayed click on the Display Other Drives button and select your internal hard drive as the target.

  • Disk Utility can't verify or repair hard drive

    I started up my Tibook using the install disk and ran disk utility to try and repair my hard drive and it went through the verification process and then said that there was an error and it could not repair the disk. It says that it needs repaired, any suggestions?
    Also, when I come back to my computer after being gone several hours, I'm having trouble getting the computer to respond. It's not supposed to go to sleep or go to screen saver, but when I come back, the programs take a long time to respond - any ideas on how to fix this?

  • Disk Utility unable to Verify/Repair Permissions since this week's update

    Hey there folks- I am experiencing some software problems with certain apps not launching (I understand it is an issue with QT now but am not clear on how to revert... Help?) and naturally panicked a bit.
    I went into Disk Utility and tried to Repair Permissions.
    Starts checking and then claims to lose connection and that I need to quit it and relaunch. This, of course, tells me that I am about to corrupt the disk and will "pay" for it (not seriously but feels like it!).
    Anyone know what I can do to fix this as I really cannot, this minute, afford to reformat as I am working flat out with the machine.
    So- review- unable to repair permissions and sometimes the machine runs slower than usual on the net as well as no longer launching some applications. Missing a few too but I can live with that!
    Any help VERY gratefully received.

    As for QT- I hear tell that it can interfere with the running of applications and I certainly had a lot more than just Disk Utility fail on me. Stuff APPEARS to launch and then just stops after a few bounces of the icon on the dock.
    Of course that TOO began only after the update.
    I have to say- if it weren't for your calming influence I'd have freaked by now. I mean- how can we trust the updates if they cause such agro?!

  • Disk Utility can't "Verify Disk Permission" and "Repair Disk Permission"

    I booted up the Leopard 10.5.5 server from the Install Disc, and tried to do disk checks on all drives using Disk Utility.
    When the system drive was selected all the "Verify Disk", "Repair Disk", "Verify Disk Permission" and "Repair Disk Permission" functions are able to perform, however, if the non-system drives are selected only "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" are able to perform, the "Verify Disk Permission" and "Repair Disk Permission" are GRAYED OUT ! and UNABLE TO perform the permission check and repair!! Any idea ?

    Hi, I'm having a problem could be related. I've a 3 years old Xserve (not intel) with 3 HD managed by the apple original RAID board, all that running Mac OS X 10.4.
    I remotely manage the server from my mac running OS 10.5.6 and Server Admin 10.5.3.
    Well, I simply cannot propagate permissions because when I do it, Server Admin freezes and i must force it to quit. Obviously, privileges are not propagated.
    All that di NOT happen 1 month ago when i was "happily" running Mac OS X 10.3.x and Server Admin 10.3.x. Upgrading has been a big boomerang.

  • Grey bar at startup - Mac HD is greyed out in Disk Utility - Can't be repaired? Need to salvage my data!

    Mac Book Pro -
    My MacBook Pro (2008 Model) has been unable to start up - upon the start up screen when the grey Apple logo appears, I get a loading bar below it.
    After about 15-20 minutes when the bar is almost complete the machine shuts off. There seems to be no way around it. 
    So I booted up my laptop in recovery mode, and opened Disk Utility to check my if there was something wrong with my drives -
    my Macintosh HD (under the TOSHIBA drive) is greyed out. When I hit verify/repair it returns error messages and it remains greyed out.
    I tried multiple times and a few times it stopped being greyed out on the sidebar, but even then it wouldn't let me verify or repair.
    Not backing up my data recently is my obvious fault here, but I just wanted to know if there is ANY way to salvage my data.
    Things I've tried:
    1) Recovery Mode
         -Veryify/Disk Repair doesn't work
         -Time Machine can't seem to access my HD either (greyed out)
    2) TargetDisk mode
         -I connected my MacBook Pro via firewire to my Mac Pro in TargetDisk mode and no Hardrive shows up on my finder.
    Any advice appreciated, going to try and take it to a tech shop on Monday.

    I would take out the HDD and install it in an enclosure and then connect that to the Mac Pro and see if there is any success.
    If not, then look for data recovery software on the Internet.  Most will have a 'trial' version that will indicate if the software will be successful or not, so you do not have to commit funds without knowing if it will work or not. 
    The last option is a professional recovery service.  There will be no guarantees of success and the costs will be very high.

  • Disk utility-erasing a HD, creating partition map hanging

    Hi all,
    I have been given an external Maxtor USB drive, 120 BG, with the need to securely wipe the old information on it. I have used Disk Utility, and zeroed the HD with a 7 times pass. This took 17 hours, and it moved to the "create partition map" stage. It's been doing that for 24 hours and still the progress bar is rolling. All other options are greyed out and nothing can be selected in Disk Utility. I have chosen to format it in Mac OS X Extended, Journaled. There was about 45 GB data on the drive.
    Would this amount of time be expected, or has something gone wrong? I hesitate to force quit DU, in case I render the drive unusable. If I do that or shut down the computer, what's likely to happen to the HD? Will I be able to mount it again and start over. Any tips much appreciated.

    Hi Frances,
    17 hours for the 7-times pass is normal (and usually completely unnecessary unless you work for the CIA). However, the hang at the "create partition map" stage is not normal. I would interrupt it and reformat the drive, since the zeroing is finished anyway.

  • OSX Lion Disk Utility won't verify/repair RAID volumes

    SInce I upgraded to Lion (now at 10.7.4) I can't use the Disk utility to verify or repair the disk catalog (disk first Aid) on apple soft RAID volumes. These volumes were created in 10.6 use the Apple RAID feature of disk utility.
    I have one striped and one concatenated volume - neither will work. Press the button and the progress bar flashes for a fraction of a second, then nothing. no error, no message in the window - just no repsonse. Works fine on non raid volumes in the same disk enclosure -Firmtek Seritek/5PM, with seritek 2ME4-E sata card.
    Not sure I really want to recreate and recopy the drives....
    Any ideas? Seaches haven't turned up this specific issue.

    A quick search in these forums for permissions or *permissions problem* reveals many posts the past four months.
    In a nutshell, repairing permissions w/Leopard takes anywhere from 10-40 minutes, depending on what's installed and what's contained in /Library/Receipts/bom/. The repair permissions operation has changed in Leopard. The stalled progress bar is an unresolved bug (they haven't figured out how to make it work whilst it's checking or rebuilding the a.receiptdb, in /Library/Receipts/db/. To see what's really going on, open that folder in a Finder window, select list view, launch Disk Utility, select your boot volume, and click on repair permissions. Watch the Finder window flash files that are being read and checked against the current a.receiptdb file. That's what's taking all the time and freezing the progress bar. Once that's finished, the progress bar starts moving and the permissions are being checked and repaired. Also note, that you won't get any *they were repaired* message back for any that are noted to be incorrect.

  • Disk Utility can't verify MBPR Macintosh HD?

    I have a 13" Macbook Pro with Retina Display, 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3, 500 GB storage (of which about 250 GB is free).
    When I launch Disk Utility, select "Macintosh HD" in the left column and click "Verify Disk," the process begins ... but abruptly ends after a few steps, without ever fully completing.
    Additional info: When the "Verify Disk" process begins, if I place my ear near the keyboard, I can hear a some very quiet, squeal-like noises from inside the computer at various points during the verification process. The noise stops as soon as the verification process craps out.
    Has anyone experienced anything like this?

    I tried to run "Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions" on an external partition, but they all grayed out! "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" were fine! The "Owners Enabled" is "Yes". Why they were grayed out ?!
    Get Info on this volume showed:

    Access: "Read & Write"
    Ignore ownership on this volume: checked or unchecked STILL grayed out!
    Other partitions on the SAME drive are able to do "Very Disk Permissions" and
    "Repair Disk Permissions" (as they are NOT grayed out !) The ONLY difference
    between the one (CAN'T) and the rest partitions is that one (CAN'T) has
    owner by "admin", and the rest partitions (OK to veryify pewrmissions) are owner
    by "system". ANY CLUE ?

    The options to verify or repair permissions are only available on a disk with Mac OS X 10.2 or newer installed, and all Mac OS X versions set the owner of the partition containing them to system when installed.

  • Disk utility. can't verify permissions

    Now using Maverick OS 10.9.5 on my iMac duo core 11.
    My computer has been very slow to action 'clicked commands' so I tried to Verify Permissions .
    It came up with a problem with Application/ Safari  V 7.1.2 but would not complete verification.
    I stopped it and repaired Permissions and it repaired the Safari problem. But still slow.
    I tried resetting Safari and it seemed to work for a while but then slowed down again.
    Can you help?

    Try a restart.
    Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
    Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
    Isolating an issue by using another user account
    Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
    Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
    the drive and everything on it. See below for how to clone a drive.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
             with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
             After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
             a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
             button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
             After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
             size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
             partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
             and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
             (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
             with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
             Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
             username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
             Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
             install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
             Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
    Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    You may be able to backup your data if you have an erased external drive you can use. Before you do the above but after you have opened Disk Utility you can try to clone your drive:
    Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
           it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    Now this will only work if the drive is accessible and can be cloned by Disk Utility. Otherwise, you would need to access your drive from another Mac that you can connect via Firewire - Target Disk Mode.

  • Disk Utility can't repair or verify?

    Hi, my 12 G4 powerbook is running fine except the fan is on nearly all the time. I thought I'd try to repair (or verify) disk permissions to see if that might possible help. But every time I run it on the HD, it just spins for maybe 10 min then gives an error message indicated failure. Why can't Disk Utility find the permissions? The disk otherwise works fine. There's no partition and i'm the only user.

    You can repair disk permissions from the Disk Utility application already on the drive. (Applications/Utilities) but I doubt that's the issue here.
    Try resetting the PMU, *(not SMC)* instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431 Read the article carefully before doing this.
    Can you boot from your restore disk? Restart your PBook while holding down the C key, pressing the power button and inserting your restore disk all at the same time. An Installer window will open, but do not proceed with any installations. Instead, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities > Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility window click First Aid, and then click Verify. If Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
    If Disk Utility cannot repair the disk, there are several good disk utilities to look at. One is DiskWarrior and the other is TechToolPro.

  • Disk utility can't repair a partition on external hard drive

    I have a 1TB Western Digital external FW drive that's only a couple years old (2 or 3, probably). I have it split into partitions, one of which I'm using for Time Machine. The non-Time Machine partition checked out fine with DIsk Utility, but when I ran Disk Utility on the Time Machine partition, I received this message:
    Disk Utility stopped reparing "Time Machine." Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
    Does this mean the drive itself is failing? I erased the Time Machine partition and recreated it through Disk Utility, and then I verified it. Everything checked out okay, but I want to make sure, especially since I'm hosting my iTunes music in the other partition (it's backed up to a 2nd external drive, so if the drive does die, at least I don't lose everything).
    Before this problem happened, both partitions dropped off the Finder and the light on the drive went off. I unplugged the drive and plugged it back in again a couple times, but nothing happened. Finally, the light went back on after plugging it back in for the 3rd or 4th time, but I'm wondering if the drive could be going bad, which would surprise me since it isn't very old.

    Possibly, but not necessarily.  The File System on the disk was so badly corrupted that Disk Utility couldn't fix it.  That might indicate a problem with the drive.  It's not unusual for consumer-quality (ie, inexpensive) drives to fail after 2-3 years, although many will run for several years.  It's a bit of a crapshoot.
    Before this problem happened, both partitions dropped off the Finder and the light on the drive went off.
    Whatever caused that is another good possibility -- if a drive is improperly disconnected, OSX can't "close it out" properly, and that can cause damage to the file system.  Sometimes Disk Utility can fix it, sometimes it can't.  And sometimes heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair apps like DiskWarrior can fix things Disk Utility can't.
    A power dip or spike could have caused it, or an overheated electronic component, etc.  If it has it's own power supply, be sure it's on a good (ie, not cheap) surge protector or U.P.S. system.
    Otherwise, keep an eye on it.  If you don't have "secondary" backups, this would be an excellent time to get another drive for that purpose.  See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some suggestions.
    Bottom line:  personally, I'd not trust my only backups to that drive.
    (But then, I'd never trust my backups to any single drive, no matter how new or high-quality.)

    You can find an extensive discussion of the permissions repair messages you can ignore at Topic: Permissions Snow Leopard 10.6.4. Nothing on your list of permissions messages is unusual or indicates an issue that needs correction.
    However, the partition failed message indicates that you need to run Disk Utility's Repair Disk function on the disk volume. Note that if this is your normal startup volume, you will have to start up from some other disk, such as your installer disc, & run the Repair Disk step from it.
    If Disk Utility is unable to repair the HD, you can try more powerful (& costly) utilities like Disk Warrior, but there are no guarantees that any of them will be able to fix all possible problems the HD may have.

  • Partition errors - "Disk Utility can't repair this disk"

    I partitioned my external 1TB WD HD into two drives (950GB + 50GB) using Disk Utility (OS X Mavericks 10.9.1). However the 950GB partition will no longer mount. It is recognised in Disk Utility, but grayed out. "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility lead to the worrying error message "Disk Utility can't repair this disk."
    From the Disk Utility logs, the initial partition was successful:
    Partition 1:
    Name:  “Media Centre”
    Size: 948.13 GB
    File system: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Do not erase contents
    Partition 2:
    Name:  “Media Centre 2”
    Size: 50.03 GB
    File system: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Do not erase contents
    Mounting disk
    Partition complete
    Afterwards, I changed the name of the second partition “Media Centre 2” to "BOOTCAMP" (I was going to try to install Windows 7), but then changed my mind and tried to remove the second partition. At that point the log gives the error "Mount of “Media Centre” failed".
    Partition 1 ("Media Centre") now seems to be in limbo, stuck as 950GB, and "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility lead to the worrying error message "Disk Utility can't repair this disk". Also in Disk Utility, Partition 1 ("Media Centre") now has the format classification "Mac OS Extended" rather than "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
    Any idea how I can get my hard drive to mount and get the data back?

    In  Disk Utility select the Top most entry on the left, the drive model and or manufacturer name and size entry, then click the Partition tab and Repartition it to your liking. If that fails the drive is bad.
