Disk Utility crashed during partition and DOUBLED partition use - now it's full?
This one has me stumped.
1TB Disk - NON-start-up - had about 450GB of data files on it.
Split it with disk partition so I could reclaim free space.
Disk Utility crashed during the partition.
Relaunched Disk Utility.
Now shows 900GB of the disk are used.
Tried to repair disk with Disk Utility, "Can't Unmount Disk"
Have rebooted now and am trying to find out WHAT that other 450GB of space taken up actually is. (using WhatSize).
Anyone have any clues what the heck is going on? I now no longer have any space to duplicate the partiion files to (though on another drive completely). I can still access the files but not sure what that other space hog could be....?
Thanks anyone.
Techtool Pro was able to determine the directory structure was fubarred - repairing it corrected the structure to report the size correctly.

Disk Utility Crashed during an "erase free space" and now no space exists
So i have no idea how to recover my space after disk utility crashed while I was out today, All I know is I had close to two hundred gigs freed that I wanted to wipe clean after resetting some things in various applications.
I figure I could go find the offending file through some unix-fu. Boy was I wrong
udo find / -type f -size +300000k -exec ls -lh {} \; | awk '{ print $9 ": " $5 }'
/System/Library/Speech/Voices/Alex.SpeechVoice/Contents/Resources/PCMWave: 382M
/Users/vahtryn/lotusnotes851_macCZ5S6EN.dmg: 402M
Thats all I got for searching for any file sized 300 meg or more. So, what's the deal? How can I recover this space if I can't find the EFTFile1.sparseimage that's supposed to be created?
I read elsewhere it should be here: ls -lh /var/root/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems
ls: /var/root/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems: No such file or directory
Not on my SL install.Okay, found a solution. Posting it for others who experience this problem.
1. Restart your computer
2. When your computer is completely started back up, check your trash can. If there are recovered files in there, empty trash.
3. If no files are in there, delete a file you don't need, or make a screen shot of something and delete it. Then empty trash.
After doing the above, temporary files were erased. At least that's what worked for me.
Finally: if you haven't done so already, back up your entire system, so in the event you have a complete crash, you will have a back up. -

Then i thought its might not be repair just by one repair.
After that i try repair again however this message still appear.
I ever try restarting and shutting down my MacBook but the message still appear.
I do some research and find that one of the message in the list can be safety ignore
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1448
Hence i just ignore the message.
Meanwhile i try to partition my hard disk and message shown;
Partition failed
Partition failed with the error:
Could not modify partition map because filesystem verification failed
I getting too frustrated about this problem.... ARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!
Any solutions are welcome. ThanksYou can find an extensive discussion of the permissions repair messages you can ignore at Topic: Permissions Snow Leopard 10.6.4. Nothing on your list of permissions messages is unusual or indicates an issue that needs correction.
However, the partition failed message indicates that you need to run Disk Utility's Repair Disk function on the disk volume. Note that if this is your normal startup volume, you will have to start up from some other disk, such as your installer disc, & run the Repair Disk step from it.
If Disk Utility is unable to repair the HD, you can try more powerful (& costly) utilities like Disk Warrior, but there are no guarantees that any of them will be able to fix all possible problems the HD may have. -
Disk Utility froze during partition resize.
Hi, i have a 1tb western digital external hard Drive which i use to store all my media and backups.
I set the partition to 950gb for media and the other 50gb for time machine to use to backup. This 50gb got used up pretty quickly, So i went and opened disk utility, deleted the 50gb time machine partition and then resized the 950gb partiton to 900gb so i could have 100gb for time machine.
So my 950gb media partition had over 550gb worth of files so i knew it would take a good few hours to peform this task. so 6 hours later i came back to my imac to check the progress and saw that it was in the "shrinking" stage and the bar was at about 95% complete.
So the next time i checked my imac was when i woke up the next day, it has now been 24 hours since i started and the bar is still on 95% complete and in shrinking stage. I thought it would of been completed by now but i carried on waiting. after 48 hours of waiting and the bar still being on 95% i figured that the disk utility had obviously crashed so i had no choice but to force quit disk utility.
I had a feeling that this would of somehow messed my hardive up and oh look.. it has. When i click on my external hardrive now all i get is a finder window appear with no results and a little spinning loading bar in the bottom right corner of the finder window. Left it for 15 mins but it still didnt load anything.
I am now in the middle of a "Repair disk" operation but it has been 12 hours and the bar is stuck at about 75%.
Any other ideas on whats gone wrong and how i can fix it? i have alot of important files on that hard drive and thousands of pounds worth of media. I will not be happy if ive lost that due to a fault in mac OS X.
Thanks for your time.Unfortunately West Digital external drives have a very poor track record with Macs. I would recommend replacing it with a higher quality drive, something like a OWC, Lacie, or G-Tech.
In addition putting your backup and additional storage on the same external HD is a recipe for disaster. The reason is very simple, if that drive dies (and all eventually do) you will lose both your data and backup! Here is a recent article from or Macworld that discusses backup strategies, while I think the author is a little over the top having redundant backups is a very wise idea. Because external HD's are relatively inexpensive there really isn't any reason not to.

Disk utility crash whilst creating new partition - OSX 10.8.2
Hi all,
On my MBA I tried to partition the hard disk - creating two equally sized ones from the existing 112GB.
Only 40GB are used at the moment. First Disk Utility only let me create a new one with 50 GB, but I went ahead anyway (constantly complaining that the target disk is too small....)
Disk Utility crashed in the middle of resizing and now I have a big mess - looks like it worked in resizing the primary but I can't access the 'new' half.
This is the diskutil list output:
diskutil list
/dev/disk0
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *121.3 GB disk0
1: EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
2: Apple_CoreStorage 120.5 GB disk0s2
3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3
/dev/disk1
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD *52.4 GB disk1
Any idea how to access the missing part?
It's OS X 10.8.2 on MBA 5,1
Thanks a lot,
getwercSafe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive. -
Boot Camp Assistant / Disk Utility Stuck during Partitioning
Hello Apple / Apple customers,
I have a 15" MacBook Pro (Mid-2010) with a 320GB hard drive. I recently partitioned my hard drive to install Windows 7 in order to install and play a Windows game. Everything installed fine, but I discovered that I didn't have enough space partitioned to fit the game (I did not anticipate it taking 14 GB to install). So I deleted the partition. Now I'm attempting to make a larger partition and restore a Winclone image that I made of the previous partition on that new partition. The problem I am receiving occurs when I attempt to make a new partition in both Boot Camp Assistant and Disk Utility. During the partitioning process, Boot Camp Assistant stalls at about 30% and stays that way for hours, and Disk Utility also stalls during the "shrinking disk" part at about 30% as well. Is there anyway that I can fix this? I already tried repairing my hard drive by running Disk Utility via the Installation Disc, and it says that my hard drive is fine. Thanks in advance for the help.Reinstall Leopard, but first use the Leopard install DVD Disk Utility to reformat the HD to one partition. See:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh14.html
It's for Tiger, but applies for Leopard as well.
WARNING, you must have your data saved somewhere else.

Disk Utility - Solution for a Weird MediaKit Partition "too small" Error
I found a very suggestive article, could be a silver bullet for this kind of problem.
+*quote from SWedd*+
+In my case, it was caused by the Apple_Bootstrap partition (created during Ubuntu install), of format unknown to OSX. This partition was positioned right after my Macintosh_HD partition. To enlarge my Macintosh_HD I needed to use diskutil to erase the Apple_Bootstrap partition to a blank "MS-DOS" partition. Then I could use Disk Utility to Delete the MS-DOS partition. After that I could resize my Macintosh_HD freely.+
In my understanding, if you failed to increase the size of a certain partition, it might mean a partition just after that partition is corrupted or broken (whether or not it is corrupted, you can know it by using command "diskutil info ...").
With command "diskutil eraseVolume ..." you can erase the partition in question, then with "diskutil mergePartitions ..." merge the partition you want to increase in size and the partition you just erased. Now you can increase the size without any error.
Anyway, diskutil can do several things which Disk Utility can't do.
To resort to diskutil is sure worthwhile.

Lost OD Users and Disk Util Crashing
Community,
My Lion Server is having some trouble! It seems that LDAP is not running, and while I've tried a few terminal commands to reboot the service, nothing seems to have worked.
Also, the user profiles on the server have just vanished. I believe this would be a result of the local OD not running? Afterall, if its considered 'offline', I'd expect the Server Admin and Workgroup Manager to not display the users.
One other problem - An external disk was becoming pretty unresponsive from my Lion Server, so I moved it and plugged it into another computer, where it seemed to run just fine. Resetting the PRAM on the Mac Server seemed to alleviate some troubles, but the disk was still acting up.
I erased and reformatted the disk to 1 partition, but now I cannot re-format the partition scheme I'd like to use. Now, my Disk Utility crashes whenever I try to select the 'Partition' tab an a newly reformatted G-RAID 2 TB disk, using Mac, Journaled, Formatting.
Anyone have some pointers on how to continue troubleshooting these two issues?
Thanks,
Cyeah, now we have the answer to your question, I didnt have time to include this tactic in my previous post:
a. load Tiger DVD client disk into Mac mini hosting Tiger Server 10.4.5
b. launch Disk Utility
c. click Verify Perms
d. DU finds various problems, finishes stating it repaired them
e. click Verify Perms again
f. DU finds various problems, finishes stating it repaired them
g. click Verify Perms again
h. DU find no problems, finishes stating it repaired them
So, restart this Tiger Server with its own hard drive, then run DU from that hard drive: same error message once again
Perhaps this is a benign error ? -
I am using a 1TB WD studio passport portable drive with my 2011 MacBook Pro. I have the portable drive partitioned into 4 volumes: 355 GB, 320 GB, 320 GB, & 4 GB. But Disk Utility won't allow me to split the third of those into 160 GB /160 GB. All volumes verify as seeming "to be okay". Seems if Disk Utility could create me a 4GB partition that 160 GB is plenty big enough, right? Something's not right; Can you help me with this please?
What is on those partitions and or the partition you want to split in two?
If you don't have any data on partitions or if you can save it someplace else for the time being then why not just Re-Partition the whole drive into the sizes you now want. -
Disk Utility crashes and dmg files won't mount
My girlfriend's Powerbook has been acting up for a while now, and we still can't seem to get it working properly.
One day, her Adobe programs just stopped working. Tried several things, but nothing worked and she ended up reinstalling OSX. That fixed the problem, but then she noticed she could no longer open DMG files. Accordingly, she tried to run Disk Utility but then found that it would always crash when trying to open.
She ran Disk Utility from the install disc, but nothing turned up. She also tried looking up several methods of fixing the DMG problem (deleting various files), but nothing's worked.
If I remember correctly, she also tried using the 10.3.9 combo updater some time ago, but that didn't help. We're actually not totally sure about that, so we're trying to reinstall the 10.3.9 combo updater, except for the fact that Apple has only made the file available as a DMG (which she obviously can't open).
So can anyone please help us get Disk Utility to stop crashing, and get those DMG files to open/mount? I have the crash logs but they're huge, so I'm not so sure if I should post them. Thanks everyone!
PS. I can open DMG files for her using MagicISO (I'm on a PC), but it's a bit of a pain transferring those larger files to her.
Powerbook Mac OS X (10.3.9)What files did you try deleting? If you don't know what a file does or why you're messing around with it, you shouldn't; that's just asking for trouble.
Let's assume for the moment that you have a corrupted preferences file. To find out, go to Users/Library/Preferences and locate the com.apple.DiskUtility.plist file and drag it to the Desktop. Now relaunch Disk Utility and see if the problem continues. If not, then use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions, and then you can Trash the file on your Desktop.
You should also use your OS X install disc to boot the system and use Disk Utility to Repair Disk, to see if there are any problems. If it reports any errors that it can fix, keep running it until no more are reported.
If there's an error that it cannot fix, stop using your system immediately and make a backup of everything; then get a disk utility such as DiskWarrior to see if it can fix your drive. If your drive cannot be repaired, you will need to replace the internal drive and restore from your backup (if you have one).
Hope this helps,
Mulder

Hi guys does the below mean anything to anyone.
I had a CD in the dvd drive (a game play disk) and when i pressed the eject key on the keyboard the CD did not eject, so i open Disk Utility to eject the CD that way and Disk Utility locked up.
So tried to restart and shut down via the apple menu. No Joy.
The only thing i can think off is i had a disk image mounted that was on my NAS (It was a game dvd of 1.2GB, the program was installed, the image of the install DVD was mounted to save time while playing the game) and that is what caused the conflict between to mounted images? One in the dvd drive and one on the NAS, but they were different games so i don't get it.
That said the play disk on the NAS was Mounted with Toasts 'Mount It' option - right click - More - 'Mount It' as if i used 'DiskImageMounter' (default) the game would ask for the install CD.
I have ran the AHT and ASD - all OK, and ran remember via single user - all OK
I just want to understand what happened.
The best bit is while the mac was locking up bit by bit, as System Preferences then decided to lock up, i tried Toast 7, to eject the CD, it locked up. Spotlight was OK so ran terminal and as Safari was OK browsed the web and tried various command line shut downs and using activity monitor force quite apps. I managed to shut down to the logging off blue screen with spinning wheel before my G5 decided to do no more and i had to do a forced shut down.
I was able to open the Dashboard widgets but the Drive Health.wdgt didn't work and still doesn't?
If i put the game play disk in the G5 and open Disk Utility it locks up again, i had to do another forced shut down.
After restarting i put the game disk in and opened Disk Utility again and all was OK. Tried 3 more ejects and re-inserting, all OK.
I checked my 2 drives SMART info, for piece of mind, via Drive Health.wdgt but it would not display any info, it wouldn't update.
So i have just booted of my firewire HD and the Drive Health.wdgt works fine and the only difference between my firewire HD and my local HD is that i have run applejacks since i re-imaged, and further examinations reveal that the error relating to the Drive Health.wdgt is a permissions error so i am even more baffled than when i started.
console log at time of the first Disk Utility crash.

Disk utility hangs during disk verify
Initially 'disk verify' registered errors on exit - minor error/issue it said, some kind of header problem, so I ran disk utility off the install disk. Now the machine's native version of disk utility hangs during disk verify, blue & white spirals forever.
This coincidentally straight after my gmail/google address/account was hacked a couple of days ago.Have you tried booting in SafeBoot mode (shift key held on start
until login screen appears) then launch Disk Utility and then run
its 'repair disk permissions' item, selecting the Macintosh HD;
and then note the repair window. It should fix something.
And when Disk Utility is done, quit it, and restart the Mac normally.
{...It is unlikely something from gmail affected your computer unless
you open up unknown sourced emails or go to odd web sites where
something may be downloaded from there, which you would almost
have to install (as admin, etc) for malware to work. You can get and
try ClamXAV for free to see if it sees any malware virus content.}
If you use Gmail, and do not log in using the https:// (secure http)
you should change the habit and bookmark the secure login site.
And when booted from the Installer disk and running Disk Utility
from there, see about running "repair disk" and not verify. The
repair choice will verify; but verify will not repair. Could be if
you cannot use the Utility to Repair the issues, and the other
SafeBoot mode and the computer's Disk Utility to get it working
you may need to further troubleshoot and/or get third-party tools.
In any event...
Good luck & happy computing! -
Disk Utility crashing, mounting encrypted drives w/out passwd
MacBook Pro
15-inch, Mid 2012
Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
Boot drive: OCZ-VERTEX4 256GB SSD
Data drive: APPLE HDD HTS547575A9E384 (original 750GB spindle moved to Optical bay)
OSX 10.8.5 with all OS level updates installed
Disk Utilty has become progressively worse, crashing randomly when mounting drives. Sometimes it works. Sometimes not. Does not matter if the computer is freshly booted or running for some time. Both with and without external drives. Tried zapping the PRAM. No difference.
What's more, my Data drive (the HDD listed above) is encrypted and should NOT auto-mount. I have NEVER selected the auto-mount check-box. And yet, there are times (not always) that I enter the passwd for the one-time (until next reboot) Unlocking of the drive and the correct passwd yields the "Incorrect Password" error over and over again. I quit Disk Utility and wha-lah! --the drive is mounted.
It got to the point that Disk Utility was auto-mounting the encrypted HDD drive without my ever selecting the auto-mount check-box. I deleted all Keychain preferences and this re-set Disk Utility back to its normal behaviour. The preferences / Keychain file must have corrupted with all the Disk Utility crashes.
What is going on? How can one of the oldest apps in OSX behave like this?
Ideas?!
kaiLaunch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
Disk Utility crashes after Leopard upgrade
I have a problem with Disk Utility crashing (error message is the generic "application unexpectedly quit")on launch after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. I bought the family pack upgrade and had no problem upgrading my G4 mini. However, my Intel mini 1.33GHz, seems to have gotten spooked. For the most part the pgrade was fine but somehow I lost Disk Utility. Has this been seen before? What might I try? Incidentally, the mini has 2Gigs of RAM and plenty of free disk space. The problem occurs in all accounts. Oh, I forgot to mention that I also upgraded to the latest version of Leopard (without checking whether disk utility worked after to install from the disk - so technically, this could be an combo upgrade issue? Having said that, I did exactly the same with the G4 mini and had no issues.
Any thoughts?
Thanks much!

Boot from the Leopard DVD - hold down "C" key with disk already in place - and after the language screen, in the menu top left, select Utilities and run the DU from there. Repair HD and permissions.
If you did a "merge" install from Tiger (default) then you may have brought some things along that Leopard does not like.
Did you have any "haxies" or other old 3rd party apps installed in Tiger? Most of them won't work with Leopard and need to be replaced or removed.
